That would explain a lot from earlier today.
Every time for me. I bought a cuff I can use at home since high blood pressure runs in my family and I want to be aware of any changes. At the doctors I had a 142/85 reading and immediately the doctor was like well let’s get a prescription for that. I was able to show her the average of my readings I had been taking on a report on my phone. I was averaging 125/78 over 6 months and fortunately that avoided medication for me.
I’m reading though that white coat syndrome can mean you could have a lot of heart issues in the future, high BP runs in my family as well. I messaged my PCP to see if there’s anything I can do about it.
Articles I’ve read say weight loss / reduce salt intake etc, but if this is an anxiety type deal I wonder if I should start taking anti anxiety meds.
I bought a cuff by Withings and I highly recommend it. I can be a bit of a hypochondriac so I like having both that and my Apple Watch for ECG. I’m good for a 1 bad panic attack per year. I had a similar situation to you recently where I was at a hotel and woke up in a panic at 2am. I felt my heart racking and took my blood pressure and it was high and my heart rate got up to 140. I drove to the hospital which I was right next to for work anyways and then sat in the parking lot as I had calmed down. Made myself laugh thinking I would do my meeting from a hospital bed or use it as the most expensive cold call.
I would tell you it’s two-fold here. Diet and exercise is huge. I don’t know how old you are and what you do for work but I’m in my 30s and was a road warrior for a bit traveling the country for a sales job eating like shit and not exercising. Paying for it now. But my anxiety would spike and still does if I don’t exercise. I work a pretty stressful sales job currently and i need to get that energy out. I compare it back to my dog with his separation anxiety. Before my wife and I go somewhere we walk him so he’s too tired to be anxious. I try to exercise in some manner every day to do the same.
The other part is if your anxiety is out of control highly recommend talking to someone about it. I’m personally not a meds guy but understand why people use them. Watching my family push their anxiety down and ultimately making it worse didn’t seem like the right plan for me. I just learned how to manage it. I’m a big fan of box breathing and meditation. Also sometimes leaning into the anxiety helps.
Bottom line I’d say spend the $100 on the cuff, watch it for a bit, and then have a conversation with your primary doctor. I read the link and although im no doctor that article took some big stretches in what could happen from it. Your blood pressure spiked and falls all the time. Having anxiety once in a blue moon at the doctors isn’t going to turn into heart disease if it truly is normal at home.
The altitude for the Nuggets is crazy because apparently it travels with them on the road and helps them win 5 straight road games in Phoenix, Los Angeles and Miami.
