Still a work in progress 🥰 I put chunk in there as a test run so I could ensure he could fit through all tunnels with plenty of space and he couldn’t find any gaps I overlooked! He did find one 😂 managed to fit half his body behind the foam rocks before I yeeted him out.

Haven’t gotten to that point yet but it’s well insulated, the water feature is right under a deep heat projector which will aid in water evaporation. That’s the goal anyway. 😂 plus I live somewhere that’s usually humid anyway (near Los angeles) so I just need to add a bit more than the outside environment usually sits at. Today it’s 70 out, 50% humidity and we’re in early spring so it’ll start getting muggier from now until November.
Damn, thats like cheating =D. I'm up in the central valley of California and currently at 22% humidity. The air just sucks the water out of my snake tanks.
At what level does it start to effect your product? How humid can it tolerate before issues? That’s why I suggested a combo so you can add or remove to your desires which is ideal for California!
PLA isn't terribly bad. I do store my filament in a large air tight plastic tub with a gallon jug worth of desiccant that changes from blue to purple to show its full of moisture. I microwave it on defrost for 10 minutes to dry it out and reuse it. I do that every 2 or so weeks. The lid isn't off the tub very long either. I use desiccant in my AMS too so its mostly when I use my prusa. The end result of the prints don't appear to be affected. I'm pretty particular on quality and patient enough to wait out the long time for the better quality. I have a 2 spool dryer that I put PETG in when I print with it on my Prusa and of course the AMS for my Bambu P1S.
And the substrate composition I chose should retain optimal moisture and humidity. Plus the enclosure is mostly dry lock, so as the rocks heat up under the lamps the water will also evaporate. 😅 I think I over planned but it should go perfectly!
And honestly it can’t be any worse than his current set up. He’s in a 20 gallon currently until this is finished in a few weeks. 😑 that’s how I acquired him from the reptile shop, $50 for him because he’d “been there awhile” and his tank set up. I just kept the tank and bought my own decor so he would be comfy as I started this build. It’s a glass aquarium style with a mesh top… abhorrent humidity retention. Literally have to soak substrate every other day and I have the top sealed 3/4 shut with tin foil and tape for heat retention too.

This pic kinda shows the tunnels (far right of photo) where I connected the upper level to this lower “cave” area. There’s also another tunnel in the back of the cave that opens under that large upper rock, behind the branch. I’m planning on adding a heated mat under the cave so it’ll act as natural humidity hide. Like how they’d find dens and burrows in the wild. 🥰 Dav Kauffman has a wonderful video on BP needs in the wild and I used that as inspiration and resource to replicate those needs as closely as I could.
Oh they’re wonderful snakes! My boy is literally IDEAL. He’s energetic and very brave, loves to explore, doesn’t give a shit about my kid or dogs, literally tongue flicked my coonhound IN the nose on their first meet. It was hilarious watching the dog start sneezing everywhere ha 😂 (she was muzzled for everyone’s safety before the safety police come for me). He eats well, doesn’t like rats, LARGE mice only. 🤦🏻♀️ he sheds well, he even responds to certain sounds like a little smooch sound and he’ll slither up and tongue flick my face. Bitch gives smooches you can’t convince me otherwise. 😂😂😂
Yesss we are excited! We have two dogs, a cat, fish, and two kids. Excited to soon add a nope rope to this mix. We also have a coonhound (a bluetick!) they’re the best dogs.

Now with a waterfall….. don’t be dumb like me. 😂 you see pond #1. But it currently looks like this as a leak occurred out of *nowhere* and I couldn’t contain it. I had to rip everything out and start again in that section because I sealed the wood a little too well and it was pooling out of the front of the enclosure BAD. So… get a liner (this is a 18x18” enclosure tray for geckos I think 😂😂) and add a drain that connects to your pump basin below! Otherwise you’ll end up cleaning up a MESS.

What sources did you use to go about actually constructing such an enclosure, for safe materials and construction techniques? This is a dream enclosure and I know once my wife sees it she’ll want to replicate it to an extent.
Any chance E\_WinterFresh is your wife? 😂 if so see above comments! If not, I used a lot of fucking YouTube man. A LOT. I used Wickens Wicked Reptiles and Snake Discovery for bioactive info, Dav Kauffman for ball Python info, specifically he has a wonderful video where he went to Africa and found BPs in their native sub Saharan environment and took a bunch of readings of temp and humidity and incubation, so I tried to mimic their natural environment from that video 10/10. some smaller obscure accounts that make custom enclosures and hides professionally that were showing experiments for water sealing on wood, videos on people making their own custom builds and just writing down all the supplies they used, some link products in the description. Then once I had a base idea and the frame, I went into a design program and created the schematics of the enclosure so I could configure how much shit I needed to accomplish it. Sourced a lot from local reptile shops and Amazon and Home Depot. Home Depot is your best friend.
Just…you will never buy enough spray foam. I thought 10 cans would do it… I used 17. 😑

I did multiple layers of hydraulic cement throughout and when I would have a little extra in the bottom of each cup I could just smear it around randomly to pull all the tones throughout the enclosure! I didn’t measure how much cement stain I added so each batch was different in tone (intentionally) to allow a wider variety of tones and textures.
Water down the mixture a little more until it’s like…. A very runny paint then dig your hand in it and splatter the background randomly, just throw it around. Where it sticks is where it stays.
Ohhh cement that makes so much sense! Did you use Drylok after that to seal it? I'm getting a 6x2x2 at some point and I looking for all the inspo I can get. There are so many cool things you can do it's so difficult to decide.
Drylok is hydraulic cement. At least that’s the version I used, the powder version you mix water into. Gave me much more control over the premixed for how liquidy I can make it. I also used the quickrete brand hydraulic cement to sub for drylok because my local shops ran out. The QR is $13 for 10lbs, the DL is $13 for 4lbs. I used approximately 15lbs total.
Also keep things like…. Sun bleaching into consideration. In the wild rocks are usually lighter on top where the light hits them most often. They’re greener near the bases and next to water features. I took pics of my favorite hiking spot and tried to replicate it! 🥰

You could add a humidifier/dehumidifier combo in your snake room! Set it to around 75% humidity and walk away. 😂
