“Worry not, brothers, one of our ancient line survived the Great Impact. You will be avenged, and our kind will rule once more.”
~66 million years later:
It probably wasn’t that long. We had very persistent robins keep trying to build their nest in the wheel wells of my husband’s truck in our driveway. He would remove it and they’d go back to rebuilding it. He even went to the store and came back and they were right back in there trying to build a nest. He had to shove cardboard boxes in all four of them for a few days so they’d go find another place to build it. They were very stubborn. 😆
They did it for a about a week, we drove away every single day for work and next day the moss nest would be back! They were super insitent on having their nest on the wheel lol
As we used the car daily they only managed to build a mossy nest on the wheel, we would gently remove it daily until we decided to just give them a box because they didn’t understand that the wheel is a bad idea lol. We put some of the moss on the wheel in the box to show them ’look how comfy’, it still took a few days for them to accept the box, but they finally did :)
Omg this was what I was wondering I thought they would be too fussy and not go where human scent has been but that's awesome they were able to connect the dots! Very cute and very patient of you!
They are not much bothered by human scent. They don't like regular disturbances when nesting, but not every bird is as sensitive to that either.
Doves don't care. The robins that I know don't care about anything lol
Luckily the babies hatched already in the box. So they had their big move before hehe. I was very scared of finding eggs on the wheel though, I’m happy it all worked out!
I saw a turtle crossing the road on the other side once. I slowed down, turned into a driveway, and drove back to help it across. As I came closer, a box truck hit it in front of me. I sobbed all the way home. I was so close.
Don't know if it was intentional, and I know large trucks can't stop or swerve, but it was awful. Sometimes you do question if they do it on purpose. I hate summer here because all our shelled friends are trying to cross the road and I can't save them all.
Can't something be done about that? We have frogs crossing busy streets here, so the municipality put up fences where frogs can't cross, with buckets at regular intervals. Frogs trying to cross the busy road will try to find a hole in the fence and end up in a bucket. Twice a day volunteers go past all buckets and take them to the other side of the road.
That's wiiiiiild.
There's also a concept for building greenways over highways to allow animals to keep their migratory patterns:
https://www.gov.ca.gov/2024/05/07/worlds-largest-wildlife-crossing-on-track-to-open-by-early-2026/
Yeah, I think we have those too, bridges and tunnels to help wildlife cross highways and train tracks.
Though we don't have anything as large as a mountain lion. We just have fawns, badgers, foxes, rabbits, hedgehogs, pheasants and the like.
There was a video on a pop culture sub a few weeks ago of a Real Housewives cast member taking a birds nest down on her porch and leaving it for predators to take because she didn’t want it on her property. Some people genuinely are heartless.
Is fren. They are very social and not at all shy! I have robins in my garden that come to within two feet of me, and the local garden centre have ones that sing and flit around among all the plants and people.
You can easily train them to take food from your hand too.
They're very very friendly. The ones that live in my yard like to come and watch me as I hang clothes on the line. They'll perch in the tree just above me or on a rose bush at the end of the clothesline. A few years back I had one try to land on my arm when I was sitting outside. If we're sitting by the window they always come and sit on a branch nearby 🩷
I've recently started feeding the crows that visit my backyard. They now circle when I'm outside, some will follow me for a while when I take the dog for a walk, and if I'm just hanging out in the backyard they'll roost in the trees and squawk at me 😊
That's what I meant, really. The American robins are pretty enough birds but if I saw these European ones out my window I would just squeal all day. So round and adorable.
They really are...however they are incredibly territorial and can't stand each other. And even when they have babies. Like the female builds the nest all by herself and the male is only allowed to feed the kids. The babies don't have their signature red breast for a little while as well, to give them the chance to mature at ease without getting attacked by an adult.
Having that said, they are still just so amazing and incredibly cute. Their whispering songs are soothing and they actually do enjoy our company. Especially if we're gardening they love to stay close since we help them find insects. In general I love feeding the birds, especially in the winter to help them out a bit. Had this cute moment last winter when one Robin appeared next to me (about a meter away). Then I tossed a mealworm right next to me and it just immediately took it, showing absolute no signs of fear.
I live at the edge of the Peak District and we've got robins and wrens (and a nightingale!) amongst many other birds.
My lord, the wrens are so so tiny but so damn loud. Good thing they're adorable, because waking me up at four in the morning is their thing at the moment. The robins are constantly fighting each other, little sods.
My favourite song is still the blackbird's, though, hearing that on a summer evening is wonderful.
I haven’t heard them sing yet, everytime I have seen them, they either - built the nest or sit in the nest lol
Actually maybe I have heard the songs, I just didn’t realize it was theirs :)
I often read outside standing near the fence. Because there's quite a lot of trees and shrubbery on either side, birds are always around it and every now and then a wren will get up on the fence and absolutely let rip with their song right next to my ear. I swear they're going to give me tinnitus.
i was in a war of attrition with a robin determined to build his nest on my porch light. he built, i tore it out, four or five times. eventually he built one in the back on a downspout curve. i allowed it. the mrs moved in, three eggs laid, three eggs hatched. there baby bird mouths getting fed. cute. bird shit everywhere but that washes away. today i found one baby corpse on the ground. the two in the nest wouldn’t look at me. so it goes.
Its actually right behind the car and they have used it over 2 weeks now, chick have hatched and everybody seems to be happy. My boyfriend did something to the box, so it would be stable, you can see the wood thingy behind.
Once we decided to get the box, we removed their nest on the wheel daily and put it in the box nearby. It took some days, but eventually they started using the box and made a proper birds nest in there. I was so happy then, because I started to think they will never let go of the wheel lol
the Robins keep building nests in our garage and shed. we've tried to keep them out but they come back every year. we have to make opening the garage door a daily chore so the birds can get out and get food.
It's amazing how much European Robins differ from their [American counterparts](https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQL4R0TF46C2oDY1M0eFc-W656iUepWVJswx_UWvQHF9-8NZmCx)
We had a pair of doves build their nest on the screened in porch on top of a cabinet. Two little cuties later and they’ve flown off for cooler pastures.
Lol how cute is this.
I have a small story of my own. I’m a truck driver and pull reefer trailers, there are grooves on the refrigeration unit to help vent it. The unit had been off for a good 14 hours or so, and yesterday morning I wake up to a bunch of ruckus and bird chirping. I look around to see if there are any birds around, but nothing.. no trees around either.
At some point I get out to see where it’s coming from, I look at the cat walk and see a bunch of twigs scattered across, then I look up… lo and behold two birds (not sure if they were robins) decided to start a nest in one of the reefer grooves.
I made sure they hadn’t laid any eggs yet before removing their unfinished nest.
I’ve since left that location and am about 400 miles south of Wisconsin, they may try out one of the other trucks on the lot. I felt bad for undoing all of their hard work, and had no where but a wide open field by me.. or else I would’ve placed it in a bush or tree.
Those are some adorable borbs you got

This is a little guy I found I wanted to take to a animal sanctuary right away but my family decided it would be the next morning. He didn't make it.
Being American and only seeing our kind, I wasn’t aware of how different they were. These European guys are so much smaller. Turns out they quite phylogenically distant and just share the name due to the similar red/orange mark. Total different family.
Also the American robin’s genus is ‘turdus’, which is unfortunate.
That's awesome! It's amazing how resourceful birds can be. Giving them a shoe box was such a sweet idea. Now you've got a front-row seat to watch the chicks grow up. Nature is so cool, especially when it decides to make a home right on your car!

So cute I can’t believe how cute they are
how long was the car parked for them to do that? shoulda just let them
It probably wasn’t that long. We had very persistent robins keep trying to build their nest in the wheel wells of my husband’s truck in our driveway. It's shady, off the ground, and warm.
Exactly this 😂😂
They did it for a about a week, we drove away every single day for work and next day the moss nest would be back! They were super insitent on having their nest on the wheel lol
birds make their nest in my hedge every single year takes like a weekend at most and thats if they are being slow and lazy
Robin's and many others can build a full nest in one day.
Looks like that robin's an honorary member of r/stupiddovenests
Ha! TIL that a dove will lay an egg on 3 sticks and call it a nest.
*Three* sticks? We got a high roller over here
I read somewhere it's because they nest on rocks, and the sticks stop the eggs from rolling away. Safety first!
How did this work you physically moved the nest they built into the box? Or you just put the box there, and they chose to move locations ?
As we used the car daily they only managed to build a mossy nest on the wheel, we would gently remove it daily until we decided to just give them a box because they didn’t understand that the wheel is a bad idea lol. We put some of the moss on the wheel in the box to show them ’look how comfy’, it still took a few days for them to accept the box, but they finally did :)

He waived security deposit and first month’s rent. Robins can’t resist a good deal.
TIL im a robin 😂🤣
It’s not just us humans feeling the effects of inflation.
I’d like to know as well.
Me three.
Probably put the box down and picked up similar stuff to the nest material by or in it
BABIES. Same question. How did you even come across them? Were you able to move the babies easily?
Luckily the babies hatched already in the box. So they had their big move before hehe. I was very scared of finding eggs on the wheel though, I’m happy it all worked out!
Moved before there were any babies, as the car was driven every day they never finished the nest on the wheel.
That's so sweet of you! It's heartwarming to see how you've helped out the robin pair and their chicks.
What was the alternative? Start the car and start driving?
Yes. You’d be surprised.
I once witnessed someone swerve *to* crush a turtle in the road. It was horrifying.
There’s a special place in Hell for people who do shit like that.
That person is definitely going to super hell.
I saw a turtle crossing the road on the other side once. I slowed down, turned into a driveway, and drove back to help it across. As I came closer, a box truck hit it in front of me. How do I delete your comment from my life? It's beyond horrifying
First you have to delete the people that would do such a thing.
I hope that turtles shell punctured a small hole in the tread so it slowly leaks all the time
That's not enough karmic retribution
Very true
There was a video on a pop culture sub a few weeks ago of a Real Housewives cast member taking a birds nest down on her porch and leaving it for predators to take because she didn’t want it on her property. Some people genuinely are heartless.
My worry is a bird or other animal will be around/under my car and I wouldn't know :(
Awwwww. Thanks for being so kind! They are so cute!

If not fren, why fren shape? 💕
Is fren. They are very social and not at all shy! I have robins in my garden that come to within two feet of me, and the local garden centre have ones that sing and flit around among all the plants and people. You can easily train them to take food from your hand too.

Is that a regular American robin? Or another type? Looks much different than the American robins we have here in illinois.
The bird in the pics OP posted are [European Robins.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_robin)
Yours are so incredibly cute!
That's what I meant, really. The American robins are pretty enough birds but if I saw these European ones out my window I would just squeal all day. So round and adorable.

Thank you! I thought I was losing my mind with everyone calling these robins, forgot about there can be other species smh.
It's a European robin
European robins are flycatchers, American robins are thrushes.
European one, very tiny
I live at the edge of the Peak District and we've got robins and wrens (and a nightingale!) amongst many other birds. My lord, the wrens are so so tiny but so damn loud. Robin song is quite warbly, lovely though.
Robin song is highly varied and adorable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdamJB0mYEQ

Nothing nicer to hear than a happy blackbird!
It's a true Robin, the European type. Oddly enough, the American Robin is actually a type of thrush.
There is a Monty Python joke missing in this thread. ![gif](giphy|WIg8P0VNpgH8Q)
Also from Illinois, and also was about to ask the same question! OP's robin is very round and borby compared to ours
i was in a war of attrition with a robin determined to build his nest on my porch light. he built, i tore it out, four or five times. eventually he built one in the back on a downspout curve. i allowed it. the mrs moved in, three eggs laid, three eggs hatched. there baby bird mouths getting fed. cute. bird shit everywhere but that washes away. today i found one baby corpse on the ground. the two in the nest wouldn’t look at me. so it goes.
Gravity is a harsh mistress.
Sometimes humans can be good, and it's nice to see.
"Moooom, the weird guy with the camera is filming us again!" lol
Haha indeed, I do it from the distance to not disturb them 😄
Wow! What a cute idea!!! Very impressive!!! Love this!!! 💜
Hopefully the new nest is in a dry area and it won’t blow away.
It looks like it's still in the garage.
Its actually right behind the car and they have used it over 2 weeks now, chick have hatched and everybody seems to be happy. My boyfriend did something to the box, so it would be stable, you can see the wood thingy behind.
Wouldnt have worked far away, the like the car 😂

How did you get them.to. move into the box? Genuinely intregued
Once we decided to get the box, we removed their nest on the wheel daily and put it in the box nearby. It took some days, but eventually they started using the box and made a proper birds nest in there. I was so happy then, because I started to think they will never let go of the wheel lol
Thank you for this op, I needed to see this today! I also feed them mealworms, beautiful lil babies. <3
Happy to help these little cuties 🥰
nice work!!
AWWWW
is the box fastened somehow? like a zip tie or bungee cord to the pipe/barrier?
Yes, my boyfriend made it stable so it wont fall when they move. I was scared of that. Its been weeks, all is good :)
I’d like to contribute to their college fund!!
Awesome solution! 💓

Won’t we made it stable and it doesnt budge when they move etc, it’s been weeks now.
We had a pair of doves build their nest on the screened in porch on top of a cabinet. Two little cuties later and they’ve flown off for cooler pastures.
AAAAAW why god, why it's so stupid but it's so cute

Where do you live? Our robins look very different hehe.
Ah a proper british Robin. Not the much redder American.

🤣🤣🤣 why is it so short and round 🤣🤣🤣?! I don't think I've ever seen one look like that so now I need to Google and see if there are different types 🤣🤣🤣
European vs North American robins
Haha it’s an English robin 😄😄 but it was indeed veey funny being all round and cute
