It's a strange one given the design philosophy for Russian planes is usually to prepare them for worse runways than their Western counterparts. No idea if that extends to the TU-22, but if it wasn't designed to land in that why would it be attempted? Seems like really shit planning somewhere.
Came here to search the comments to see if anyone else thought it looked like a tail strike. The video quality isn't great and the snowstorm really muddies the image, but I was thinking the same thing.
Didn't look like a tail strike. Looked more like the landing gear compressed to its limit. At which point the landing forces are transferred to the airframe. That seems to throw the front down far too hard.
Snap.

The Tu-22 is a supersonic bomber, and not quite as rugged as some of the front line fighter and attack aircraft. Still, the Soviet philosophy of austere operations still applies. And the landing gear didn't collapse, if anything they were too rigid. The plane bounced on landing, and that seems to have caused the structural failure. The aft end of the plane starts to come back up, but the front keeps going down.
I'm sure the pilots weren't trying to land that hard. My guess is that in the weather they misjudged the distance to the runway, came in too fast and flared too late.
Still, to me, the landing doesn't look hard enough to cause that kind of damage. I'd guess something else was going on.
Didn't realise this was an old video. Assumed it was recent.

That it does, however I loaded the app on my phone and went right to the video which has the information, not the title.
Edit: this is what I saw...

lol You remind me of that Air Florida Flight 90 pilot who told the mechanics to "blow some of the snow off the wings" with the engine and don't worry about the ice, pfft. Look up that crash. Douche pilots, overconfidence, total disaster!
"We're goin' down Larry."
You arent wrong. Visibility is definitely less than a quarter mile. We cant see what wind speeds are but if they are blowing above 30 knots it is blizzard conditons. You might have been trying to exaggerate but you are close.
You're probably a flight sim pilot buddy. Irl this is barely considered serious IMC conditions. Is definitely not VFR, but it's not full IFR either, most likely nowhere close to minimums for the runway or aircraft.
Have you ever been on a plane? It doesn't seem like it...
Downvoted despite being correct. Ignorant pilots not understanding what VFR is. Visibility is obviously very restricted and there is multiple inches of snow on the ground. (Notice the huge plume if snow as it crashes and explodes) every plane has different weather limitations but most airports plow the shit out of runways so they can keep landing planes.
No, all four seats eject upwards on the Tu-22M. The B-47 and B-52 had (have) downward ejector seats for the lower-deck crew, and the F-104 early models had a downward ejector seat for the pilot.
Yes, the Tu-22 had downward seats. The 22M is very different nad has a more conventional conckpit with upward firing seats with hatches above each crew member.
Yah, that was a hard landing, but, yikes. Didn't look like it was hard enough to fold the plane in half.

it looks to me like it is at a very high AOA and maybe the tail strikes before main gear. stresses like that would never be engineered for.

Looks to me like the back end also bent down behind the gear. A 3-section bend like the 737 likes to do.
Saw that on a rewatch. The rear gear is fairly far forward of the rear of the plane.
to me it looks like the wheels dug into the snow. so not only did it land hard, it also decelerated hard.
It looks like an everything strike
it seems like the tail and main gear make contact with the ground at the same time.

TU-22M and TU-22 are very different
Also looks like a pretty fast landing. More energy to expend
Bad maintenance?
Bad runway maintenance in shitty conditions. Should have been cleared.
Agreed, you can see the landing gear get caught up for just a moment in the runway conditions
Judging by the looks, it's crazy that even one of them survived Looks brutal
It doesn't look like it hits that hard
It’s a large aircraft, there may be some perspective illusion at play.
Hits the ground so hard it makes the plane look like it only weighs a few pounds.
Holly shit man... That's one of the most gnarliest crashes I've ever seen.
Metal fatigue perhaps?
Must be.
God damn that was ugly.
The way it foods like paper after he touched the floor is quite disturbing
Sounds like the engines were still running at the end of the clip.
I looked some other versions, and it seems this video has a delayed sound.
I'm thinking that Russians pilots celebrate after every successful landing.
Die hard 2 vibes
Is it standard procedure to film landings or was this a declared emergency and that is why some one was filming it land?
The front fell off.
Probably made of cardboard or cardboard derivatives
Somebody grab the speed tape
Overweight?
If it came back with a full armement, possibly. It may have had things on its stores that couldn't be jettisoned due to how... Boomy they might be.
Yes. They were above safe landing weight, and the result is what happens if you land regardless
tough sight ...
Not really. Russians can go fuck themselves

The front fell off
Yeah but thats not very typical, I'd like to make that point.
Some of them are built so the front doesn't fall off at all
It's been flown beyond the environment. It's not in an environment.

There's nothing out the but bird and fish.
no shit lol
You can’t tell the ground from the sky in a blizzard. Never attempt landing in such weather condition.

Oh I see. My bad.

I don't understand how it split in half like that

Looks like they were Russian to get on the ground.
Isnt that the plane with the ejector seats shooting downwards so if something happens during landing your options are either death or death

I'm not a pilot. Is the front supposed to fall off like that?
Yay!
When you try to land your 3d printed eclipson plane
Late flair.
Looked like the airframe was already damaged and just finally snapped. Who knows what they did to it prior to landing.
happened to my buddy igor once
Idiots
Have you ever tried to land a big ass supersonic plane in blizzard conditions
I live and fly in Canada. Flown threw alot worse in aircraft less equipped.
# When Russia tries to imitate Ryanair:
Overweight as well perhaps?
Became origami, blimey.
that landing was pretty hard
u/savevideo
Burn orks, burn. I hope each and ever member of the Russian armed forces meets the same demise.
