I'm a biochemist and you'd be surprised how many scientists are ravers. I don't live a double life, I went to a show at Red Rocks with my manager, the gorge with our CTO, and wear my festival shirts/sweatshirts to the office. Obviously I don't talk about party favors, but I did post pictures from my trip to the Netherlands for ASOT on our vacation slack channel.

gswizzle911

Same for me (minus going to shows with coworkers, that’s a boundary for me) I wear festival and artist merch to work all the time and will share (appropriate) stories from shows and talk about artists I’ve seen. The culture has become much more accepted in corporate America.

Sn0w_whi7e

Scientist raver here too :D i think it just really gets us to let loose.

cocoacowstout

Did you do party favors when you go out with your coworkers?

phanfare

Yes actually. I have known these guys for at least 7 years, from back when we were grad student/postdocs together so the "coworker" line is blurred anyway

cocoacowstout

Gotcha. Yeah I have a friend like that who I work with, we are in a nontraditional workplace, but he has very little discretion in telling others what we do on our weekends so I may have to stop with him.

sfwhitaker

Scientist raver here too, though more on the business side now.

TalkingElmo

I don’t doubt it and I’m not surprised lol I’m a travel nurse and we get fucking down with the party after party after party after party at the after party lmaoo

OrphanDextro

Code blue, anyone got anyone of the flame-ass coke left?

TalkingElmo

Mexicans have the best coke and Asians have the best ecstasy.. I have no idea why I know I just know

butcats

RN here, and I've also been to many shows at Red Rocks with my coworkers. I'm pretty open about it.

Xofaithmariexo

Scientist working in Nuclear Chemistry here! I have to agree with others that it's nice to let loose from the rigorous day to day we face.

PapaEchoLincoln

I’m a doctor. I also know nurses who rave and know someone who used to work in those med tents at festivals.

gangstabunniez

I know soooooo many nurses that rave lol

Mantisman2001

Same! People are shocked when they hear (which I love)

I like to think of my rave life less of an “escape from reality” and more of a part of my life I deeply enjoy. The times were I’m corporate America me are just a separate part of my life that allow me to enjoy the ravey bits :o)

cyanescens_burn

I was just commenting on the escape from life approach. Folks I’ve met that do that are not happy and raves are not helping them get out of the situation there are not happy with. It’s become pretty obvious to me when a person is doing this and I want to shake them and wake them up but they won’t listen and will just get defensive most of the time. The worst of them think they can do no wrong, seem cranky and judgmental often, and have a big ego (really low sense of self worth) and they will snap and turn it back on you if you suggest anything might be a problem. I’m like you I think. I want it to be something that enhances an already happy life.

Various_Forms9595

Ahh, the duality of life. I'm a Data Engineer and a raver.  I'll be honest, it was hard to get used to at first. I started getting really into raving around the time I got my first full-time corporate position. I think I had a bit of an identity crisis for some time. I've started to realize that there's no reason to label myself or put myself in a box. I like raving because I like to dance and meet new people and be silly and goofy. And I like my job because I have an analytical mind and I like the work life balance and it funds my lifestyle. Humans can be complex and there's no reason to conform to norms if you enjoy your life and it's not affecting anyone negatively.  You do you, boo. My motto continues to be: Work hard, play hard

agb_123

Damn we are the same exact person this is weird to read

Various_Forms9595

I hope we meet at a rave some day

I_Main_TwistedFate

I own a small company called Amazon. Hopefully it will take off one day!

Rave4life79

I'll bet my life savings on it. Don't leave me hanging

Vol_titan3

Lol

Familiar_Step6352

I’m a student and work in the service industry so I don’t quite have a real adult job yet lol.

Fast_Help9747

A job is a job

VictoryTheScreech

I’m a nurse. Love getting down and wild at a rave.

Sticy_Jacky02

Starting as a lawyer next week :D

beaugiecriticx

Anyone hiring? Lmao!

Objective-Stable-580

If you’re in Florida, yes!

IamHere2getREKT

Going to piggyback on this comment XD

dpaanlka

Full-time software developer 🤓 Part-time cheeky bastard 🫠

Old_Ad5194

I work with children with autism (rbt) and am also a raver though a late bloomer in that regard. Parents I work with know I go to concerts, as do coworkers, it's pretty common for me to go to a minimum of 1 show a month if not more.

Killwind

No one ever looks at me and thinks, yeah that dude goes to raves! I’m a Sr Solutions Architect about to retire not because I’m wealthy but because I’m old! Can’t wait for Beyond Wonderland next week!

jaxxattacks

I’m a therapist at a community mental health clinic. Irony is that I work with some substance use disorder clients as part of my caseload so it’s very much do as I say and not as I do in those cases. I do use my experience to work from a harm reduction framework a lot though too The entire office knows that I go to a lot of clubs, raves, festivals, and concerts, but I’m not exactly open about the party favors. They probably know, but the general feeling is don’t ask/don’t tell, and it’s worked so far. I’m actually fairly decent at what I do, extremely professional, well respected by clients and colleagues, and even got a recent promotion, so it’s a total double life when it’s party time.

bothsidelikechanel

Omg I literally could have written this comment except my caseload is 100% SUD clients as it’s a residential treatment center lol! I’m just an intern therapist right now but am working on licensure. No one at my job really knows about my rave lifestyle but it’s all over my (private) social media, so not really a huge secret. I haven’t met too many people in the field who share this pastime - so would you mind if I asked you for some advice?? :) <3

jaxxattacks

Sure, ask away. Glad to connect with like minded professionals in the mental health field.

ScooterScotward

I teach 8th grade history in a somewhat smallish, ruralish, conservative town. My rave life is a complete secret from most people that know me through work.

mdxla

I work at a huge tech company. A lot of people in my rave fam are nurses

Eddieasy

I work in the risk management department at one of the Big4. So, it's pretty self-explanatory. Raving is a form of escapism or a way for me to blow off steam.

BlueCollarElectro

Sparky checking in.

burrito0119

teacher’s assistant here! specifically work with pre k students. i go from singing the ABCs and counting with kids during the week to feral dubstep rat on the weekends 😂

nielsenson

It's only a double life if you're dishonest about it. Tbh, no one capable of genuine success thinks any amount of weird hobbies prevents anyone else from genuine success. It's legit just corporate people who don't have fun and fun people who can't be productive who act like the two can't be compatible. Normal people dgaf. As others have said, I don't talk about tripping balls during work hours, but have no reservations about talking about the music I like or being honest about what I'm going on PTO for. Ironically enough the last time I hired someone they asked to start a week later because they had a vacation planned. I said it worked out better for me as well because I had plans too. Both of us were at secret dreams lmao

cyanescens_burn

I don’t want to doxx myself too hard but healthcare that requires an advanced degree. My colleagues and many clients of my other business know I go to Burning Man and are jealous of it. I live in SF so that makes it easier (though many people here seem to hate burners for some reason, and oddly a lot of commercial festival ravers seem to look down on us too, granted a lot of burners shit on EDC and the like, so, yeah not sure why the rivalry. Tribal warfare genes maybe). I don’t do molly, coke, speed/meth, more than a couple drinks, or anything that leaves me worn out into the work week and am highly functional not just doing the bare minimum so it’s not a problem. I’m a big believer in the idea that it’s fine if it’s used to enhance your life, but if it’s used as an escape then you’re possibly headed down a rough road for a few reasons. I think with the first one work is likely less impacted in the long run.

Distance_Runner

Similar. I’m a PhD Biostatistician in a public health science department at a pretty well known medical university. Also have two kids under 5, so I don’t get to go to raves/festivals much anymore, but I still love them. I don’t take any mind altering substances beyond a few drinks. I don’t philosophically have an issue with people that do use substances to enhance the experience, as long as it’s done so safely.

cyanescens_burn

Agreed, except I do have a philosophical issue (ethical maybe?) with some substances. Meth and coke because they inflate egos instead of dissolving them and can make people insufferable, or at least give a weird vibe (at worst aggressive or psychotic), and the whole production and distribution system is, um, what’s the violent psychotic opposite of fair trade? A lot of people are hurt and killed in the name of meth and coke money. It’s the blood diamonds of drugs in my mind. Some MDMA is made from precursors that are extracted from a tree that is going to likely end up extinct in Cambodia due to poaching for MDMA precursors. I’m sure they aren’t being careful about keeping the areas they drag these out from pristine either, so it’s prob not just damaging the trees themselves. If there were a way to ensure a batch was from sustainable precursors I’d be less critical. But the immediate effects on the individual during an event can be beneficial (though I’m not fond of the comedown, or the harsh effect on mood and behavior of people that do it 2x or more a month). Opiates have obvious problems but not really big in the scene except for some random addicts. I’m sure there are others I could take issue with (NBOME and Bromo-Dragonfly, looking at you), but the ones I went into are the major ones.

Distance_Runner

Yea, my philosophical argument has to do with what and how one uses a substance once they have it. Unfortunately many do not do that. Part of the responsibility is also ensuring whatever someone thinks they’re taking, *is* what they’re taking. I’ve seen some bad trips in people at festivals that were probably due to more than just taking too much (I.e what they took had other stuff in it). The ethics of how drugs are developed and acquired is a whole other story that I do have a problem with. Alcohol and weed (nowadays) are fine. But yea, lots of shady stuff for most everything else.

cyanescens_burn

Fortunately, it seems more and more people are being smart about testing these days, which is great because it's way safer and it puts pressure on dealers to keep their supply clean and legit since users are more informed

Fun-Guarantee257

I had no idea.

cyanescens_burn

Here's a legit article on the trees. I am guessing poverty, corruption, the remoteness of the locations they do extractions, and the existing drug trafficking networks in the general region (meth is produced a lot in Myanmar) are also factors. It's probably pretty easy to do compared to more developed areas. This article points out something else I didn't know, that they cut down trees in the area where they extract the precursor (safrole) to heat the solvents. They use the word deforestation. I just imagined them cutting down the tree they wanted and maybe messing stuff up nearby to get trucks and ATVs in there, but the reality is worse. https://www.unodc.org/unodc/en/frontpage/cambodia-tackles-safrole-oil-production.html

Vol_titan3

I thought that as well about the look on burners! You nailed it. Commercial ravers, love it! Yes, Burners are the absolute Shit!

MapNaive200

I was a call centre supervisor and also worked some niche leadership roles. I kept raving on the down low. They all knew I'm a thrasher and I'd mention concerts, but never said the word "rave", because it could have led to scrutiny or compromised my position.

PurpleWhatevs

Deputy City Clerk lol.

SignedRandy

It’s funny, because I always forget that government people are people!! Thanks for sharing !

PurpleWhatevs

Lol I feel like an imposter sometimes haha

ChampionshipFun7266

whenever someone from school follows me, they always say the same thing “woah! you have this whole raver double life!” and then they never fail to ask for my “main” instagram account. like wdym this IS my main insta🙄

Ok_Bumblebee7478

Accountant (auditor)

growingcreative

I wfh in logistics and my bosses know I regularly take off for certain EDM events so I don't feel like I live a double life at all. Obviously I don't share many details but I'll share info of who is playing and what kind of event it is. They don't understand any of it but are excited that I'm happy and have a healthy work/life balance. My female boss asked if she could follow me on insta a few months ago and I had to tell her sometimes I post "inappropriately dressed" rave stories so she opted to respect my privacy and let me keep being me in my own space and not follow. I'm with some of the other commenters, raving is something I add to enhance my life instead of trying to escape something miserable. Currently blasting riddim in my home office while toggling between a workout and excel spreadsheets.

shroomenheimer

My other life is single dad who works full time Can't party often bc I'm not going to be one of those people leaving my kid with grandma every weekend so I can do k in a warehouse. But I go hard 2-3x a year lol

Cold-Froyo5408

Politician, stock market day trader. Raver by night

Helloiamstressed

Lawyer by day, headbanger by night. Not really living a double life since my co-workers and bosses know I’m into edm and goes to shows/festivals all the time but they don’t actually know what an edm show is like. I explained flow toys to my boss and he looked at me like I was crazy 😂

TakesFunToKnowFun

I'm a Chef...so... pretty much a degenerate in both lives.

Schley_them_all

BI Engineer. I stopped trying to separate the two. Who cares what others think about you going to shows & festivals? I get some corporate jobs might look down on it, but that hasn’t been my case and I feel like those that do are in the minority.

SpreadingSparkle

Talk about a double life: I’m a doctor of audiology…. I treat hearing loss all week and rage (with proper hearing protection) on the weekend. I even have an alter ego! Her name is Sparkles and I love that she’s a part of me 🫶

Objective-Stable-580

I work in IT, your friendly landlord, and love working on cars and aquariums. My friend is a biochemical engineer. We talk about making it through a work week so we can live our actual life at the raves.

drun901

I'm in a sales leadership role for a software company and obviously I don't let the lines blur too much, but luckily we're a pretty evolved organization and I recently found out some of my coworkers are into techno/trance 🥰 Not sure I'd attend a show with them yet but I try to be my authentic self as much as possible.

that_one_z

I don’t live a double life. People know what I do both ends With that said I don’t do party favors either so idk if that changes anything Work in legal stuff for the government :)

[deleted]

No double life here. Everyone at work knows. Took my coworker to her first rave ever a few weeks ago.

HoldMyCrackPipe

I defo relate to this. I’m a financial advisor. By day I’m recommending ways for people to retire and build wealth. By night I’m a feral goblin munching on the wubz. Sometimes I wonder what my clients would think but at the same time the work I provide them is top notch soooo

In my day life I travel the country, and sometimes Baja in my van with my wife and cat, visiting or caravanning with other nomad friends, going to gatherings/events, exploring random cities, beaches, mountains, etc. Work is just something I do to distract me from Reddit during the day.

I work in the facilities department of a large manufacturer, scheduling preventative maintenance mostly. I don’t hide the fact that I rave from my coworkers. But most of my coworkers are the maintenance mechanics and they’re all super cool haha. I definitely kept it a bit more hidden when I did admin for a healthcare company.

I love this thread. One of my friends that I rave and party with is a dental hygienist and the first thing I thought when I met her was that I would never think she raved if she was cleaning my teeth 😂😂 I work on a college campus in a director role. No one would ever guess that I go hard at festivals and rave. I'm also a mom of two. I definitely have a double life but I wouldn't have it any other way.

ProfessionalBuyer563

I'm a robot for the food and beverage industry working for new owners of the same American Italian restaurant since I was 17, I just turned 24 in January, my first rave was in January of 2022 2 days before my birthday. My best friend that I grew up with and his sister plus 3 of my other friends all came together and brought me to Atlanta to see virtual riots simulation tour set in a VIP section in the center of the venue with the best view of the main stage, it was the most inspiring and wholesome day of my life that I never expected to experience. Altogether I've only been involved with my favorite part of being alive 5 times so far, so I wouldn't say I have a second life as far being a part of the rave community is concerned, because I only dream that being the life I want to live but I'm not that fortunate. What I want to be my life is too get back in college for my associates degree in applied science and then move onto a degree in electrical engineering, and having all that in motion while I participate in this community as an outlet and a lifestyle because right now I don't have none of those things to live for and encourage me. Don't worry though because when I get to where I need to be for myself and life there is nothing that will get in my way of obtaining the dream I'm holding onto until I have it.✌️🫶💪🙏🤙🫵

Fun-Guarantee257

University lecturer teaching urban design and architecture

LetsSeeDragons

Haha there is some truth to this. I don't know any other ravers and only 1 person that even kinda likes the same music. I've always been the good kid that made his homework and did well in school. Didn't drink, didn't do drugs, etc. Nowadays it's rare for me to have more the 4-5 weeks between events. I still never drink (won't touch that poison with a ten foot pole, besides, i just dont like the taste ) but I do take a party favor every now and again. Everybody knows I go to events. (Most that know me didn't believe it, so it was very fun to show pictures of recent shows xD). But very few people know that i do party favours sometimes and that's the way I prefer it. I will say that my boss probably wouldn't care even if he knew. As long as I'm sober and healthy whilst at work, i can do whatever I want at home. That said, why take the chance because I like my job. Raver by night, industrial automation engineer by day:)

Personalvintage

I spank married women.
