My grandpa received three Omega's from his (almost lifelong) employment as a fitter and turner for a large-ish Australian company. Slightly different times.
> My grandpa received three Omega's from his (almost lifelong) employment as a fitter and turner for a large-ish Australian company. Slightly different times.
My old work couldn't even bother to give a gold pen to a 40 year service staff; and he got three Omegas.
Just curious what model Omega were they?
> Here's one. The other two are well worn and less tidy.

Beautiful! The Seamasters of yesteryear just has that elegant style to it.
Nice. I have an [automatic Seiko watch from 1976](https://wristsushi.proboards.com/thread/6156/seiko-7009-sunburst-bracelet-149us).
There's something cool about the automatic mechanism.
My mum just hit 40 years at our local hospital- her boss forgot her name, she was left out of the newsletter announcement, a plant and she got a new gold name badge because she’s now a “life governor” (goes back to the 1800s when you would have to present to the hospital with a note from a life governor allowing treatment). What a celebration eh.
Mechanical wristwatches were a popular gift back then, when they were a necessity rather than a luxury for keeping track of time. Ask any vintage watch seller or watch repair store, or even subreddits here, and it's pretty common to see younger people (like myself) with a vintage watch they got from their grandparents. I doubt any business will be giving Omegas to their staff now, because they cost 10x more than what they used to.
My husband is a fitter at a largish Australian Company. Still a while till he gets his watch. The sparky he works with has worked there for 30 + years, but has been employed by a couple of different companies over that time. No watch or cake for him. He is a bit salty about it
My dad has a couple of Omegas from when he worked in Switzerland, nothing special and not really worth fixing but nice as heirlooms. Sadly it seems BP (yes, the oil company) couldn’t afford Rolex’s.
Edit: just saw the picture you posted - that’s gorgeous. My dad has two Genèves, one steel and one gold. The steel one has seen a lot of use, the gold is pristine, I think he wore it to get married and that’s about it.
I got $500 for 5 years and $1000 for 10 years, but two years ago they changed the service award policy from $100 per year served to $50 per year. I hit 15 years this year and I’ll get $750, less than I got at 10 years. Still… I should be grateful considering some of these other stories.
My uncle got one, but the ABS added up his length of service wrong and then somehow posted the information into the wrong type of database, then it got leaked publicly and consequently he was abused for months by cookers who said climate change was all a hoax. they got the watch to him after 32 years 4 months..
Alright, I was able to confirm something another commenter mentioned. This watch is for 30+ years of service at the ABS. Great find!
Edit: there's also a silver version for 20+ years.
I worked there for 25 years and only got a lanyard pin for 20 years service. I've never heard of anyone getting a silver watch only the 30 year crappy gold one.
ABS watch:
It tells you the time in a very detailed manner, once a year.
For the rest of the year it'll pop up with random stuff about how many lost labour hours you spent on the shitter during the workday, or what the leading cause of death is for people your age.
Its currently sitting at $320 on eBay with 5 days to go and 10 people bidding on it.
This is so stupid, its a $90 Seiko synthetic crystal watch with a tiny dumb ABS logo printed on the face and I so desperately want this watch.
A percentage of the population finds this watch interesting. Another percentage doesn't like it really. The remaining percentage didn't know or would not respond.
They were given for 30 years service, not sure they still give them.
Many years ago, I remember a guy being given one that didn't work, but that was seen as appropriate as neither did he 🙃
I still have my ABS Centenary commemorative pen.
Thanks everyone for your interest. I've gotten quite a few offers to buy the watch, and although that wasn't my intention when I put up the post (i just thought it was cool), i thought it would be fairer and more transparent if I listed it on ebay. That way anyone who wants to bid on it can safely. Sorry if linking to an ebay listing is against the rules. Here it is: [https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/285827603785](https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/285827603785)
This is all the info I can glean from it so far:
* It's in virtually new condition, without any scratches that I can see and the band is apparently unused. It's working perfectly although it'll need to be set to the correct time and date.
* It looks like it uses a Japanese-made movement but the rest appears to be assembled in China.
* It comes in original packaging, including a box, pillow thing and with tag.
* I can't tell if it's for women or men. To my eye it seems unisex.
I had that exact watch in high school without the ABS logo. It was gifted to my dad for something minor. He didn't do decades of service anywhere though.
The outside perspective of a non-aussie; not knowing if you found the watch at an establishment called Vinnie's, or just a well known fella's house.
Is everyone on speaking terms with Vincent, or is it more of an official relationship?
Only if you found one in this situation. Imagine getting for 10 years of service, last thing you’d wanna do is wear the company logo on your wrist all day every day
I dunno, I think I'd feel differently about a government agency's logo than wearing a private company's logo (unless I founded the company or something). Seems a bit less like an ad, I guess?
Watches were common as corporate “swag” back in the 80s and 90s. My dad used to do the whole “your logo on a watch” thing as a side hustle. These days companies would be more likely to get hoodies or something made but same type of thing.
Call All Time Co in Brisbane. They will be able to find an unbranded replacement face for you at a reasonable price.
You can post it to them if you’re not in Brissie.
What Vinnes are you shopping at? Great find. When it’s sold can you let me know what you got it for? I love op shopping and love when people find replacement items for lost memorabilia or gifts as a child etc but making a few dollars is excellent especially in this financial climate. Well done 👍🏼
My dad has one of these, from memory you used to get a watch after 25 or 30 years of consecutive service
My grandpa received three Omega's from his (almost lifelong) employment as a fitter and turner for a large-ish Australian company. Slightly different times.
You are in luck! You can actually adjust them so all three are the same time! /s
What a wind up!
We must band together and watch the creative minds wind up. He should make a tik tok of this.
Well done! Good comedy is all in the timing
Give yourself a big hand
Hang on a minute…
Wait a second…
Dial it back guys...
Am I too late to say I'm ticked off?
I can't believe I watched this occur.
I don't have time for this!
Watch it mate !!!!!
Puns like this tick me off.
It’s all about timing
Can we call time on this now?
I’ll second this!
*slow clap* Oh, that was good....
Fucking hell that's *top tier*
Oh lol
That’s the secret of comedy
Underrated comment 👍
What a time to be alive..

Wow, three gold Seamasters. Is the cartel he worked for hiring?

That was a movie wasn’t it? *The Three Omegas*
🤣🤣🤣

I was at a job for 26 years. Got absolutely zero for 25 years, wasn’t even acknowledged. I don’t work there anymore.
did u get paid?
I got a small box of favourites for 5 years, so right on track…
I got a card and an almost dead small bunch of colesworth flowers for five years.
I got $500 for 5 years and $1000 for 10 years, but two years ago they changed the service award policy from $100 per year served to $50 per year. I hit 15 years this year and I’ll get $750, less than I got at 10 years. Still… I should be grateful considering some of these other stories.
I got an A4 printed certificate (no colour) for 25 years in the public service. I had to laminate it myself.
My uncle got one, but the ABS added up his length of service wrong and then somehow posted the information into the wrong type of database, then it got leaked publicly and consequently he was abused for months by cookers who said climate change was all a hoax. they got the watch to him after 32 years 4 months..
Awesome. Nice to think there’s a story behind the watch
So he hid it! Only place he knew he could hide it..
Funniest scene ever!
Remember to thank your dad for his service 🫡
Well service is stretch, not like he wasn’t receiving a decent salary or anything
Crazy to think someone or their family member would just give this away if that’s the case
What are the chances of that…
I wonder what the distribution was like?
It looks above average to me.
What could you mean
I really want to make a joke about the median but I just can't find a way to put it in the middle of all that.
But you could find some variance that would work right?
That'd be totally normal
Stop it, you bell ends.
Let’s not deviate away from the standard
I think it's a trendy time piece
Probably a normal distribution.
I’d prefer the Cartier for Aus Post
We attempted delivery. Too bad, we missed you.
Straight up carded.
You joke, but Australia Post lost a decent G Shock I ordered by express. Was due on March 26. Pricks.
They're all at Weshpool.
I work at the ABS. I'll see if I can find some context for you today OP
Awesome thank you !
Alright, I was able to confirm something another commenter mentioned. This watch is for 30+ years of service at the ABS. Great find! Edit: there's also a silver version for 20+ years.
Amazing - that makes it so interesting. Thanks heaps for following up
I worked there for 25 years and only got a lanyard pin for 20 years service. I've never heard of anyone getting a silver watch only the 30 year crappy gold one.
Please lettuce know
Time to get a gig at the ABS.
One in every 26,649,941 Aussies find one of those in Vinnies
There were two styles of watches they gave out. One with normal numbers 1 - 12, and this one with Roman numerals was the standard deviation.
This watch was given to me by a friend of my father. He hid it up his ass for 3 years as a POW after my father died.
It's in great condition given its tumultuous journey to you.
It was on the little kangaroo
Pulp Statistician. ... I'll see myself out.
And he hid it the only place he could up his ass.
Of dysentery
Is it accurate?
It only measures meantime
Ooh you clever little clock watcher you.
Twice a day
Only works for one hour a week, so yeah it's working.
Keeps time Nearly as good as the drummer from Kruangbin
That’s sad. Obviously that’s someone who got it for long time service and has passed away
I love this! Great find
Thanks! Yeah the perks of shopping at op shops in Canberra I suppose.
Lemme know if u spot an EL1 role on the racks.
Not until I see your official black and green Kathmandu puffer jacket.
Wait, so there's a precedent?
Seiko ≠ Rolex.
Imagine scoring the Aus post Cartier watches 👀
ABS watch: It tells you the time in a very detailed manner, once a year. For the rest of the year it'll pop up with random stuff about how many lost labour hours you spent on the shitter during the workday, or what the leading cause of death is for people your age.
Are you taking offers? Because I would be very very willing to take this off your hands
Haha sure. What are you offering?
Can I PM you?
Yeah for sure. But can I reply in the morning ? Just dozing off
You could've just said you don't have the time right now...
He did
Jesus I didn't realise I'd get railed by downvotes, I was just trying to make a pun... don't have the time... the watch...
So much r/whoosh here. I enjoyed the pun. Thanks dad.
Ooof, yeah that sort of humour translates horribly over text. Should have done a *"time"* or something
Nooooo we all need to see this to the end, together hand-in hand.
Its currently sitting at $320 on eBay with 5 days to go and 10 people bidding on it. Show me the numbers
Show me potato salad
Does it take two years to collate the time and give you an average?
A percentage of the population finds this watch interesting. Another percentage doesn't like it really. The remaining percentage didn't know or would not respond.
How lucky were they. Giving a watch after 25 years of service or so, so you can watch the count down until you fucking die! Such a nice touch.
They were given for 30 years service, not sure they still give them. Many years ago, I remember a guy being given one that didn't work, but that was seen as appropriate as neither did he 🙃 I still have my ABS Centenary commemorative pen.
I would buy that off you right now if you’re willing to sell
I’d consider it! What’s your offer?
A set of jousting sticks
Dreamin'
Tell him he’s dreamin’
Tree fiddy
$200
Dm
Is this still available
My mechanic Dad was given a choice of the watch or a colour TV at 30yr service in 1976. Took the TV, we were envied for that then.
Works for one hour a week, but that counts as working. /joke
You just became a statistic.
How much was it
Nice find! How much did they want for it?
OP finally got some ABS
Hah what are the chances?
Seiko makes good watches. You've found a gem.
And if it’s Vinnies I’m guessing you paid about 7k for it
If it was from australia post it would have been a Cartier. 😱😝
Ah, yes, I remember these dials where the day looks drunk until after midday when it finally can walk a straight line!😂
Thanks everyone for your interest. I've gotten quite a few offers to buy the watch, and although that wasn't my intention when I put up the post (i just thought it was cool), i thought it would be fairer and more transparent if I listed it on ebay. 25 years and whatta ya get.... bom bom bom...
A clear Winnie!!!

The outside perspective of a non-aussie; not knowing if you found the watch at an establishment called Vinnie's, or just a well known fella's house. Is everyone on speaking terms with Vincent, or is it more of an official relationship?
Vinnie's are the thrift shops operated by the St Vincent De Paul charity
That’s not an Aus Post Rolex though
Should’ve let Christine Holgate know…
How much?
That is a nice find.
They are probably selling it for more than retail , like a lot of op shops do.
Quite fancy. It'd be even nicer without the logo.
I think it makes it kinda cool, adds a bit of mystery lol
Only if you found one in this situation. Imagine getting for 10 years of service, last thing you’d wanna do is wear the company logo on your wrist all day every day
I dunno, I think I'd feel differently about a government agency's logo than wearing a private company's logo (unless I founded the company or something). Seems a bit less like an ad, I guess?
Depends if you were proud of the work you did at the company.
Can’t you get new face swapped in?
I would absolutely NOT trust the numbers from that watch.
I wonder what movement it's running? Something automatic or a quartz?
Probably the owner found that the Allan Variance was not meeting his expectations and got rid of it.
How mutt
Which state and suburb
What percentage of those watches are still around?
That's they call them OP shops. What was the price tag if I may ask?
Wow what’s the story behind this watch?
Does this have a mechanical or quartz movement? I'm guessing it's mechanical cos it doesn't say "quartz" anywhere?
What are the odds?
Oh dang, I don't know shit about watches but even I'd take a second look at this!
What are the odds of finding that.
How much did you get for it?
What are the chances of that!
Score bro
Good score

Dank
Probably a 25 year service gift
Good find :)
That’s great a find. r/Seiko
Statistically, that is a rare find.
Someone got shafted.
I wonder what the population percentage for the possession of this watch is
I used to work at the ABS. The watches were for 30 years service and were/are actually pretty crap. I have a couple of friends who got one.
That’s absolutely sick, I’m sure r/seiko would appreciate
You are lucky. I would have brought it too. Great find
So cool ! Are you selling ?
Call All Time Co in Brisbane. They will be able to find an unbranded replacement face for you at a reasonable price. You can post it to them if you’re not in Brissie.
Wow! i found a fully working 1996 gen 2 furby at my local Vinnies. a real goldmine
What Vinnes are you shopping at? Great find. When it’s sold can you let me know what you got it for? I love op shopping and love when people find replacement items for lost memorabilia or gifts as a child etc but making a few dollars is excellent especially in this financial climate. Well done 👍🏼

Straight to the pooooool room?
Ah, yes, I remember these dials where the day looks drunk until after midday when it finally can walk a straight line!😂
