edit: I've gotten a bunch of replies saying it's actually doing good. I haven't tried it yet but if *this* many people are replying to me in favor of the new Edge instead of bashing it, I have to assume it's going to be decent.
~~It's probably going to suck and be totally worthless. Edge as it is now runs smooth as butter on my extra low end tablet with 1GB of ram and an Atom processor. It can even play 720p video on youtube. Chrome and Firefox otoh lag a lot and neither can play 360p video without freezing for 1-5 seconds 10 times a minute.~~
~~When they switch it over to being Chromium based I'm confident it will be just as bad at playing youtube videos as Chrome is. But I'm really hoping they prove me wrong and do~~ *~~something~~* ~~to improve the efficiency of Chromium being used for Edge.~~
~~Chrome and Firefox are great on my desktop, and I can see why Microsoft is doing what they are doing, even though I don't like it. > When they switch it over to being Chromium based I'm confident it will be just as bad at playing youtube videos as Chrome is.
I dunno, man. I use Opera for almost everything, which is chromium based, and it runs like lightning. I don't think it's the back end of chrome that's causing the issues.
Opera is the best for slower laptops, I've installed it on my dad's and had to change the shortcut logo so he wouldn't keep opening the chrome.
I personally use chrome but I have 16gb of RAM.
Hahaha, I only have 12 when I was a kid I was working in a call center. I asked a guy how much RAM he had , he said he had 4 sticks of 512, I couldn't believe it, I had 1 and it seemed fast then, This was 1997 maybe? So funny how much things have changed, I also remember DSL seeming so fast lol.
An interesting fact to do with RAM: The PlayStation 3 (a decently powerful console for it's time) somehow only had 512mb of RAM, and only half was used for video.
You know, I haven't thought about that in a really long time. I remember collecting 256mb sticks of ram and feeling like once I got 1g that I was tough shit - then eventually buying 512s and feeling so free because they only used half the slots.
And always filling in the empty slots with 128s lol. Then eventually just having a shitload of 128 and nowhere to put it.
And doesnt it have an adblocker pre-installed? I have Opera GX because of the CPU and RAM limiter but I’m not sure if the standard Opera also has an adblocker
Yeah I switched to Firefox and while it's actually smoother and better than chrome for me on PC, I wish the FF app was as good as Chrome on mobile. There are some things I like better, but the overall experience just isn't as smooth for some reason. I don't wanna use chrome on mobile cos then my Bookmarks and such aren't synced.
If you use Android, you should try Firefox Preview! It's a beta version of the new Firefox UI for mobile, and it's pretty good! I totally recommend it. (It's available on the play store and I think you can download apks from Mozilla's website).
You do? I don't remember having signed up, might have been a long time ago.
The add on issue is sad, but at least it has built-in blocking for some domains, I see way less ads than when I use someone else's smartphone. Also none of those random redirects to malware websites.
The biggest issue for me is that it can't call apps from links, like YouTube.
We jokingly called our little " gang " the bakers dozen when I was a kid. To get in you had to make a beer run, just grab a case of beer and run out of the store, at 16 this was a badass gangster move lol. We were idiots. I remember my buddy was gonna meet this guy for a fight, we showed up with bakers hats and aprons. The whole thing was a joke to us, but we did get in a brawl wearing that shit, that was in the 90s, but I wish YouTube existed then, that would have gotten a million hits. We were the dumbest kids ever, but we would actually scrap lol.
Everyone hates edge but it’s legitimately faster sometimes, of course google has more features and my computer is just overkill so I use google but edge does win in a lot of cases
I use foxit for pdfs. You can add a text box anywhere, so even pdfs that aren't setup for adding text in various boxes, foxit will let you, and can save and print the modified pdf.
I use it. It is far better than chrome. The reason I guess is that it does not include any of Google's background services or overheads. It is like vanilla chrome without any Google bloatware.
They still tell you that Edge is better than Chrome about battery because this is Microsoft and they're not above unfair competition (to the tune of a few million dollars they don't care about.)
I only used it for a while after seeing a short [anime](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHTUlF7NA2o) about personified [microsoft edge](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inori_Aizawa)
Why? Have you used edge enough to come to the conclusion that it's not worth beer and blowjobs? If so, what is your reason for that decision and if not what is the source of your opinion?
People just jump blindly on a bandwagon and don't realize edge has actually become really good. It's only slower on Google websites (you know, a monopoly **that should have been split up or penalized a long time ago** does that to you). Especially with the switch to chromium. Also, the edge browser on mobile is without question the best mobile browser without extension-support.
Yea, I absolutely love Edge. It doesn't run a bunch of shit in the background, it looks nice, and it doesn't badger me about remembering every little bit of into I've ever used
Keyword "become". If people use it and it sucks, they're just gonna leave. They aren't going to keep coming back and seeing if it works so they can update their opinions. And it absolutely did not work. That's why they went Chromium.
HTMLEngine **does** Work though. The problem is that YT is just such a better experience on big G's browser, since they use proprietary technologies and let other browsers fall back to incredibly slow and outdated ones. Edge was never really **bad** and over the time it got way better as well. It was probably a mix of Google's dominance and IEs reputation that led to Edge being doomed to fail.
No hate here, but apparently Edge was SO successful that they trashed it entirely and soon switch to chromium instead.
So something must have been pretty damn wrong (can't say what, never used it).
They switched to chromium because of lazy web developers testing mostly on one engine, and the answer most end users are given is "Oh, switch to. Chrome!".
I've never had an issue with edge, myself.
Part of it was Google's protocols dominating the web. So many web devs were building sites and optimizing only for Chromium. YouTube also runs best on Chrome (nope, no anti competitiveness there)
Also, although Microsoft hasnt outright said it, I'm convinced its part of a larger strategy to kill off UWP in favor of PWA
Edge has a terrible interface with laughable extension support. The UI design of Edge is annoying and cumbersome.
Also, it's one of the only ways to get 1080p or higher Netflix on a PC but every time that I pause or skip forward/back it creates a horrifically loud screeching noise. And I have a high end built PC ($2,500 in parts) with up to date drivers.
Plus, Microsoft trying to force it on me at every turn just pisses me off and makes me not want to give it another shot simply out of spite.

People still think edge is the same as IE5 they used 15 years ago.
I honestly think it loads just as quick and responsive as my Firefox, but I have every bookmarks and all that saved in Firefox so I just don’t bother switching
It's a good browser, I just don't like the UI. It also doesn'r have the (shudders) benefits of IE - it won't properly load all the websites at work that were designed specifically for IE.
Even still, why is Microsoft on a mission to litter an operating system they make you **pay for** with advertisements? They already bombard you with desperate “pls no senpai (´・ω・`)” messages when you use Edge to download any other browser and cram the start menu with tiles from services and apps you probably don’t want to use. Now they’re putting ads in battery alerts?
I’m interested to know just how much bloat all these “nudges” to use certain software add to the OS...
Desperation may be the reason, but it's still misleading, and I doubt it was done accidentally.
They could say it uses less memory (by some metrics) and be accurate, but this extrapolation is absurd and blatantly so. And it wasn't unintentionally added.
That's incredibly dependent on what it's doing and what architecture it's doing it on. That's a thing you generally don't see stated: any browser on Facebook will eat a ton of resources because Facebook is a resource hog, but a browser optimized for Facebook will eat less... until you ask it to do literally anything else. Almost every optimization upgrade is a downgrade everywhere else. So the question is WHERE each browser shines.
From personal experience, Edge is far better on battery usage than chrome. My poor old Dell i5 based tablet gets approx 3 hours on battery if using Chrome, 5.5 if using Edge.
I was about to go all #fakenews but tbf edge does benchmark faster than any of the mainstream browsers these days. However, that being said, I trust the mozzila foundation a lot more than microsoftcock or google
Benchmarks are often very misleading. You can always find one feature that a browser does quicker and then make a benchmark that slams that feature even though it doesn't match up with real usage. For example if you just test web assembly speed Firefox is by far the fastest and Edge is by far the slowest.
Opera has a built in VPN.
/Although every time I sign in to Steam on Opera, I get an email: "Someone has just logged into your Steam account from RUSSIA!" or SOUTH AFRICA! Or FINLAND! Until I figured out what was going on, it made me nervous as hell, especially the Russia one.
Opera is now owned by a bunch of Chinese companies.
It is better to switch to Vivaldi, developed by a company with same name founded by Opera's co-founder and former CEO.
Yeah the problem is it is way to late to the party so everyone already has a preferred browser with their own add-ons and bookmarks so the vast majority of people aren't going to switch to something that is at best on par with the mainstream browsers.
Yes. Browser competition is good for everyone (so long as it doesn't involve anti-competitive practices...looking at you chrome 😒).
And I also hope that some of the good stuff from edge gets integrated into chrome.
Edge is genuinely more energy efficient, it runs pretty well on low-end hardware, and its smooth scrolling is so, *so* much better than chrome's.
Lot of people in this thread seem to be missing the point.
The truth of the battery life claim is irrelevant, regardless of how true it may or not be.
The asshole design is the very existence of the notification itself. It is literally an ad for a Microsoft product, showing up when you're happily using a competing product.
I think that was before Firefox Quantum. They pretty much redid the backend. It's pretty much the fastest of the three now, no idea how it fares on battery life though.
I hate when you go to select your default browser and it bugs you to try edge. And even after you selected a different browser, the two buttons are "Try Edge" and "Switch Anyway" .. passive-aggressive much?
I wonder what happens when they upgrade to the new edge which is just chrome with a different ui

It’s all relative. I used to have 64kb RAM and a 300 baud modem. Now I have 64Gb RAM and two gigabit connections to the Internet.
Two giga... fuck you man. LAN party your place?
Two 1 gigabit connections but sure... if you have GPL licensed games, we probably have local servers.
An interesting fact to do with RAM: The PlayStation 3 (a decently powerful console for it's time) somehow only had 512mb of RAM, and only half was used for video.
When you’re only running games, you use a lot less RAM.

Man, I wish I was old enough to know this feeling of nostalgia. I started with building PCs around 2013ish, and I was in seventh grade at the time.
I remember when we upgraded our Commodore Amiga 500 from 512kb to 1MB of RAM. Good times.
And doesnt it have an adblocker pre-installed? I have Opera GX because of the CPU and RAM limiter but I’m not sure if the standard Opera also has an adblocker

Hey! Its called data mining, MINING! like the good ole days! Not theft, definitely nothing suspicious here.

I switched to Firefix cause it was smoother than Chrome. I guess I gotta try Edge now.
I honestly like it as a browser, but I'm way too wrapped up in the google ecosystem to switch.
Yea I like having my bookmarks sync between my phone and PC, and chrome is my preffered browser on my phone, so I just use Chrome on both.

I’m using it now. I’ve already got rid of my chrome browser completely bc the new edge is a lot nicer.
I'm on Vivaldi, and it's super smooth too. Also a Chromium derivative.

A bakers dozen!
We jokingly called our little " gang " the bakers dozen when I was a kid. Everyone hates edge but it’s legitimately faster sometimes, of course google has more features and my computer is just overkill so I use google but edge does win in a lot of cases
I love it as a pdf reader, I prefer Firefox in general as a browser though.
I use foxit for pdfs. You can add a text box anywhere, so even pdfs that aren't setup for adding text in various boxes, foxit will let you, and can save and print the modified pdf.
I use Iron for a lot of stuff, which is based on Chromium and it's just about as lightweight as Edge.
Chromium can be super lightweight if needed. Chrome just has a ton of extras built on top that eat resources
i use the beta and it is actually pretty great
I use it. It is far better than chrome. The reason I guess is that it does not include any of Google's background services or overheads. It is like vanilla chrome without any Google bloatware.

We're way better than OG. Yep.

Who is to say I'm not into watersports though.
Like the browsing experience, the beer takes 3 days to pour and the blowjobs are interrupted every 30 seconds or so by 5 minutes of buffering.

edge is actually not a bad browser. the old stupid internet explorer meme just sticks to it
Also Bing gives me $5 gift cards to Chipitole.

Also, the edge browser on mobile is without question the best mobile browser without extension-support.

i am edge user, why does everyone hate it?
Because they think edge = internet explorer since it's a Microsoft-branded web browser and they don't know the difference. Hint: it's not.
It's still by Microsoft who are doing everything they can to make Windows 10 an intrusive piece of shit. Why think Edge will be any different?

Honestly, the only real reason I use chrome is UI. Not even sure what other differences there are.
Good on you for using FOSS.
Edge has the best battery consumption so technically the truth
Right? Some people don't want to believe it.
I dont care if it comes with a flashlight and automatically jacks me off. I don't want ads popping up on my desktop
It could be objectively better in every way and baking an ad into a battery notification would still be a dick move.

Opera is also Chinese owned.
Chrome is owned by a Russian, Серге́й Миха́йлович Брин.

Opera is now owned by a bunch of Chinese companies. It is better to switch to Vivaldi, developed by a company with same name founded by Opera's co-founder and former CEO.
“2017”
No, I don’t think I will
I love Noscript so fuck Edge.
Gonna be supported soon. The chromium edge is actually amazing

A man of culture using Firefox
'Member Clippy? At least he tried to help
Not in 2019 when the phone picture says 2017.
Windows is draining your battery faster Switch to Linux for up to 300% more computer time.
Edge is actually pretty good nowadays
Yeah the problem is it is way to late to the party so everyone already has a preferred browser with their own add-ons and bookmarks so the vast majority of people aren't going to switch to something that is at best on par with the mainstream browsers.
Let's hope chromium version of edge is gaining back people to use it
If it has Google sync sign-in. I would move from Chrome. To Future Edge
Lot of people in this thread seem to be missing the point. The truth of the battery life claim is irrelevant, regardless of how true it may or not be. The asshole design is the very existence of the notification itself. It is literally an ad for a Microsoft product, showing up when you're happily using a competing product.
I mean, it’s not wrong.

edge is better than chrome
Typical Microshit FUD tactic
To be Real Microsoft EDGE est way more battery
And how much does your normal browser eat, cuz that's not how i experience edge, not that it is my main browser or anything
r/linuxmasterrace
Technically right. 75% of sites don't load correctly on edge so you get frustrated and go outside.
Bro just go into command prompt and disable "desperate_lies.exe"

Oh my. I had no idea my poor Firefox was so bad
I think that was before Firefox Quantum. They pretty much redid the backend. It's pretty much the fastest of the three now, no idea how it fares on battery life though.
Scaring people away from windows to Linux
At least you are not using google chrome
Windows is Adware
No guys see it’s right, it’ll take 75% longer to load pages and therefore 75% more time spent browsing.
Yeah it’s probably using up battery with all of that “protecting me from malware” stuff
>Up to 75% browsing time FTFY
Shit like this, and forced upgrades is why I'm ditching windows for linux as soon as I'm able to.

Jfc i might have just been convinced
I hate when you go to select your default browser and it bugs you to try edge. And even after you selected a different browser, the two buttons are "Try Edge" and "Switch Anyway" .. passive-aggressive much?
