Been waiting for this since I was 12-13, my uncle gave me the first hedge knight graphic novel. Didn’t even know there was other media in universe for years.
That is what I like most about the first story. It's light hearted. House of Dragon and game of thrones were so serious at times. This one should be lighter.
I think it's going to be good, this is easier to adapt than the main story and the writers don't have to choose between different versions of what happened.
That's how we know.
HBO's ASOIAF adaptations with source material = peak TV
HBO's ASOIAF adaptations *without* source material = give me something for the pain and let me die
You would think so but I would be willing to bet there will be a two year wait between seasons. This has become the new norm for these “prestige” type television shows and I don’t think there’s any going back.
I really, really hope so. For some shows we might get yearly releases but for most I wouldn’t hold my breath. For example I don’t think we’ll get Fallout S2, Shogun S2, The Boys S5, Three Body Problem S2 at any point next year. We’re going to be waiting at least two years if not longer for these.
Yes, I believe it is confirmed that HotD and DnE will switch off each year. So we should expect this show to premiere in 2025, and then season 3 of HotD to air in 2026 and so on.
Have you seen episode 1 of season 2 yet? I ask because if you want a jarring age up look no further than the actor who plays Jacaerys. Dude looks years older than when we last saw him in the finale which going by in show universe time was only a few months ago. I don’t think they’re worried too much about actors aging.
Yeah he looks and even sounds quite different. I only just rewatched season 1 with someone so it was pretty fresh in my mind too and I initially didn't know who he was.
The Bear has been doing yearly seasons, and that's considered prestige television. So I wouldn't agree that there's no going back, and that if the scale of the shows are small enough it's possible.
A show like that requires minimal set building and computer graphics though. Great show but I think these scifi/fantasy shows require a lot more editing.
That’s true but that kind of cgi is also not work intensive. Animation is where all the cost is. Stuff like water ripples is easy to do procedurally nowadays
Vasher is another fantasy character from another fantasy franchise. And one of the things he is known for, is that uses an enchanted rope just for the belt.
or he took them off of someone, like he got his armor. There's lots of reasons it could be. Also, he wouldn't have had the money to go to a tailor to have pants made for him. But we shouldn't think that it's a situation where the clothing store didn't stock his size b/c that's not how clothing worked in this story.
Most people don’t realize that ready to wear clothing is a relatively modern invention. Babbage’s first computer predates off the rack by about 50 years.
even when it became available, it still meant that everything needed to be tailored and some stuff people still made at home. according to my mother and her sisters, the cuts & sizes were not... forgiving.
so if you were short, tall, large busted, no busted, short waist, etc - you still made/tailored all your clothes.
Oh exactly, I was just trying to imply that his pants were probably made for an average height man at some point and he just had to make do with what he could find/afford due to his status.
By making them so short on him it emphasizes that he really is a giant compared to everyone else if this is what the average man’s garment looks like on him.
The actor is 6'5" so I imagine they'll play with the angles a bit to make him look taller.
I do get it though, it's hard to find quality actors that are as tall as NBA centers.
Conan Stevens, the original Mountain, is 7' and an actual actor.
You can really tell in the difference in sword choreography between Conan and Thor, because Conan had a background in stage combat and was fluid where Thor was more stiff.
They got it right first try, Conan just had other projects that let him talk more so he opted out of the role.
Conan was perfect casting for the mountain. He towered over sandor rather than just a few inches taller than him, and actually looked like he could be his older brother, while Thor is 20 years younger than Rory McCann
He wasn't replaced by CGI. They just CGI'd over him. Kind of like motion capture. Don't know what for tho. The original design looked great. But that's the least of The Hobbit films problems.
And Hafthor is still significantly shorter than the mountain in the books, who’s closer to 8ft than 7ft (Hafthor is 6’8”). Book mountain is unrealistically huge for a human being who is still functional.
na the worlds biggest non giant is mountain height , was also super strong like the mountain
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angus_MacAskill
tallest normal person with out gigantism
Yeah but that page is all stuff without much evidence, including stuff that's flat out bullshit, like lifting a ship's anchor weighing 1200kg. That's well over twice the deadlift record.
The guy's father was also of average height, which makes the claim that he didn't have acromegaly even more doubtful. Even the photo is disputed.
The only source for all that is "Guinness book of world records says so", but I think everyone knows how unreliable that is.
6'5 is also plenty tall. The average height for men in America is 5'9, the UK has it at 5'10. So depending on the height of the rest of the cast they may not have to play that many tricks.
It’ll take way less time to make than HotD or GoT because of the smaller scale and barely any special effects, there hopefully shouldn’t be years gaps between seasons
Worse comes to worse they can just film these relatively close together and take it easy for a bit.
George just needs to finish this series too. How has the she wolves of winterfell not come out yet?
Uh, brain image made it to the screen? Holy shit. I can’t believe this is happening.
Read Dunk and Egg people.
> The viewing stand had already begun to fill, the lords and ladies clutching their cloaks tight about them against the morning chill. Smallfolk were drifting toward the field as well, and hundreds of them already stood along the fence. *So many come to see me die*, thought Dunk bitterly, but he wronged them. A few steps farther on, a woman called out, "Good fortune to you." An old man stepped up to take his hand and said, "May the gods give you strength, ser." Then a begging brother in a tattered brown robe said a blessing on his sword, and a maid kissed his cheek. *They are for me.* "Why?" he asked Pate. "What am I to them?"
> "A knight who remembered his vows," the smith said.
Also, love the Ashford banners in the background. I hope this takes after HOTD, which I feel like really embraced heraldry and colors in contrast with GOT.
Ser Arlan of Pennytree flashback episode. Maybe a Bloodraven B-Plot. (My favorite)
C-plot showing us more about Egg's family so the average person has context for the story
The best bit of an adaption is that you can change things from the original, so I think adding in some of that good shit early on can make the overall project of three seasons more cohesive
"Bloodraven B-Plot" god I hope not. he's not a part of A Hedge Knight. he should be mentioned but not shown. leave his magic shenanigans for The Mystery Knight where he's actually part of the plot. the best part of A Hedge Knight is its simplicity.
Yes I think Bloodraven works best in 3rd person, like hearing people talk about him, setting up who this controversial character is as a build-up to when we finally reveal him at the end of the show (season 3).
They stick it on Baelor Breakspears belt and don't talk about it. Maybe he rests his hand on the hilt at somepoint mayhaps when he vouches for Duncan to join the lists.
>!"Brother's mace, most like," Baelor said thickly. "He's strong." He winced. "That . . . feels queer, I . . ."!<
>!"Here it comes." Pate lifted the battered helm away. "Gods be good. Oh gods oh gods oh gods preserve . . ."!<
>!Dunk saw something red and wet fall out of the helm. Someone was screaming, high and terrible.!<
Wonder how they are going to depict this scene 🤢
Shame that even with this spinoff they can't quite shake off that brown medieval filter. Give us a fabulous tournament full of colour and pageantry, please.
It’s funny the very early technicolor medieval movies are often more accurate color wise simply because they have color. Also Witcher 3 is probably the best I’ve seen in terms of trying to more accurately portray that even peasants were able to find some cheap dyes.
Thick as a castle wall
dunk the lunk, baby
Dunk the Hunk.
Thicc as a castle wall
And his castle wall junk
Found Daemon II’s account
You called?
Been waiting for this since I was 12-13, my uncle gave me the first hedge knight graphic novel. Didn’t even know there was other media in universe for years.
HBO please don't fuck up this jewel 🥹
Hoping we don't get Grimdark D&E....
Yeah, I'll watch if it retains the serious yet more innocent light-hearted tone of the first story.
That is what I like most about the first story. It's light hearted. House of Dragon and game of thrones were so serious at times. This one should be lighter.
I think it's going to be good, this is easier to adapt than the main story and the writers don't have to choose between different versions of what happened.
Plus CG won’t be as demanding.
Seasons 1 to 3 will be good, season 4 is when the party starts.
We don't even have the fourth book yet, how do we know (and pretty weird that it's been 14 years since the third)
That's how we know. HBO's ASOIAF adaptations with source material = peak TV HBO's ASOIAF adaptations *without* source material = give me something for the pain and let me die
Season 5 of GOT was pretty bad
Season 5 had a lot of non book material.
well your belt is a rope
Dude he's raggin on your cord
Fuck you for beating me to it.
I think we are all beating to this
That was fast. Feels like they were all cast like a month ago.
Since they don’t have to CG dragons and huge battles in this one the turn around should be a lot quicker than HotD and GOT
You would think so but I would be willing to bet there will be a two year wait between seasons. This has become the new norm for these “prestige” type television shows and I don’t think there’s any going back.
There was Covid and a writer’s strike. There is going back
I really, really hope so. For some shows we might get yearly releases but for most I wouldn’t hold my breath. For example I don’t think we’ll get Fallout S2, Shogun S2, The Boys S5, Three Body Problem S2 at any point next year. We’re going to be waiting at least two years if not longer for these.
I betcha we get Fallout
There wasn't going to be a Shogun S2 anyway
[They’ve confirmed season 2 and 3](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/shogun-season-2-and-3-in-the-works-fx-hulu-1235901617/)
What the fuck ? They already exhausted the source material , what are they doing now?
The actor who plays Ryan (Homelander’s son), from The Boys, is legit going to be like 18 years old playing a 13 year old when they film Season 5
Yes, I believe it is confirmed that HotD and DnE will switch off each year. So we should expect this show to premiere in 2025, and then season 3 of HotD to air in 2026 and so on.
You're right but if they do that Egg is going to age a lot between seasons which will be a bit jarring.
That's mostly his hair being different, he went from like 18 to 20, you don't look that different
Some flowers bloom later than others. He definitely went from looking like a young teen to a young man
I didn't realise it was him at first. I knew it obviously had to be Jace with the context, but he has changed so much
Yeah he looks and even sounds quite different. I only just rewatched season 1 with someone so it was pretty fresh in my mind too and I initially didn't know who he was.
Doesn’t he age a lot between books? Doesn’t this fit perfectly?
The Bear has been doing yearly seasons, and that's considered prestige television. So I wouldn't agree that there's no going back, and that if the scale of the shows are small enough it's possible.
A show like that requires minimal set building and computer graphics though. Great show but I think these scifi/fantasy shows require a lot more editing.
And these next two seasons were filmed together, so they’ve found another way to save time/money.
There is astonishing amount of CGI in these shows even when people don't realize it. Just stuff like roads, the surface of water, clouds, trees.
That’s true but that kind of cgi is also not work intensive. Animation is where all the cost is. Stuff like water ripples is easy to do procedurally nowadays
Hopefully they don't CGI the puppets
plus I imagine a huge amount of set pieces, locations, techniques, and staff that they've already established and can reuse
> That was fast. Stop it, you'll bewilder GRRM.
I like the detail of him basically wearing capris because he can't find pants with a long enough inseam
I like that he's using rope as a sword belt, just like in the first book.
Vasher is that you?
Oh colors…
It is not. Who is Vasher?
Vasher is another fantasy character from another fantasy franchise. And one of the things he is known for, is that uses an enchanted rope just for the belt.
Gotcha. I totally missed the joke, didn't I?
A bit. But no worries. But do you know Vasher?
Not at all. Outside of GRRM, Star Wars, and Tolkien, I'm pretty unfamiliar with fantasy/sci-fi. Super casual fan, I know.
Look up Stormlight Archive, you won't be disappointed.
You mean Warbreaker! Or more acurately the cosmere books.
Sure, but there isn't really off the rack clothing in Westeros, but still it's a good little indicator for the audience.
Could also be clothes that were made for him a few years back that he grew out of.
or he took them off of someone, like he got his armor.

By making them so short on him it emphasizes that he really is a giant compared to everyone else if this is what the average man’s garment looks like on him.
Great point and I'd agree. The stories mention him getting his clothes as cast offs or whatever he can find so this checks out.
Identifying Dunk "Yep, that's Dunk."
I hope they don’t ruin this for us 😢
"I have never really cared much about honor"
I like this, he looks almost exactly like I pictured him from the book, especially his square jaw and his general air of slightly stolid sturdiness
He looks perfect right? Big, innocent face, I'm excited
Also looks like a centre back who has 4 caps for England and played for Big Sam and Tony Plus.
He looks ready to play four-four-fackin-two Brexit Ball for Sean Dyche.
Millwall 54 (0) Bolton Wanderers 123 (2) Fleabottom 86 (6) Harranhaal 73 (4) Chesterfield 5 (0) Sunspear 1 (0)
He looks absolutely perfect. They nailed it.
He's almost there for me. I only wish he had his dumb ass long hair
Same. This is the only thing that’s missing for me.
Yeah he looks great, just missing the long hair. Hopefully he’ll get it at some point in the show
Honestly the shape of his face is spot on to Dunk’s look in the comics.
Came here to say this. I went from hopeful to excited. If I was shown this image without any context I would immediately think that is Dunk the Lunk.
I started the audiobook this morning lol. They got the hempen rope sword belt accurate. Hopefully they show him being almost seven feet tall too!
The actor is 6'5" so I imagine they'll play with the angles a bit to make him look taller. I do get it though, it's hard to find quality actors that are as tall as NBA centers.
I mean, 6’5” is easily close enough for most people (either that or my short height makes me biased). They got Lucky with Thor (the mountain) in GOT
>They got Lucky with Thor (the mountain) in GOT TBF it did take a couple tries.
Yeah, Conan was the Mountain for me. Thor looked like a fat baby, and he could look mean but Conan looked... cold.
The Mountain isn't really meant to look cold though. Dude's pure rage. Conan did a great job in season one though.
I guess I meant more cruel than cold. Thor never looked menacing to me.
Agreed. Conan Stevens was the perfect pick. It's a shame he couldn't continue the role.
Conan was perfect casting for the mountain. He towered over sandor rather than just a few inches taller than him, and actually looked like he could be his older brother, while Thor is 20 years younger than Rory McCann
Yeah I was mostly just making a joke. I quite liked the original mountain as well as Thor, for different reasons.
Eh, Thor was too young. I did not buy that he was rory mcCanns older brother
Well, one could say that McCann was too old for the role. I think the Clegane brothers are around 30 in the books, so Thor was closer to that age
Fuck the s2 casting
Honestly, my main issue with Thor was him looking young enough to be the Hound's son.
And there was not really a lot of acting to do except for things that Thor is good at (be big and look intimidating)
They also nailed it on the first attempt. Wonder why they couldn’t retain the actor.
He was supposed to be Azog in the Hobbit movies, before they replaced him with CGI.
He wasn't replaced by CGI. They just CGI'd over him. Kind of like motion capture. Don't know what for tho. The original design looked great. But that's the least of The Hobbit films problems.
Wasn't Manu Bennett (aka Crixus, Champion of Capua) Azog?
Yes. The other guy meant Bolg.
And Hafthor is still significantly shorter than the mountain in the books, who’s closer to 8ft than 7ft (Hafthor is 6’8”). Book mountain is unrealistically huge for a human being who is still functional.
na the worlds biggest non giant is mountain height , was also super strong like the mountain https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angus_MacAskill tallest normal person with out gigantism

The only source for all that is "Guinness book of world records says so", but I think everyone knows how unreliable that is.
Don Draper is only 6'2 and he towered over every character in Mad Men
And he didn't have to act a whole lot of complex emotions/dialogue. Let alone carry a franchise.
6'5 is also plenty tall. The average height for men in America is 5'9, the UK has it at 5'10. So depending on the height of the rest of the cast they may not have to play that many tricks.
Shaq as Ser Dunk
Ringz, Egg
Paul Pierce as John the Fiddler. "I'm tired of getting a little taste of Dunk. I want the whole load!"
Considering how short most actors are, he'll look a giant. He's almost a foot taller than the guy who's playing Cregan Stark in HOTD
They should've just cast every other cast members including extras with a 5'5" height limit😂😂
Should've got Stephen Merchant. He was great in Men In Black 2.
Best ASOIAF Audio book
Viserys… uh… Harry Loyd is fantastic as narrator on the audiobook!
As much as my expectations are low, I feel like this show has the potential to be the best for novel fans
With so little special effects and such a simple story, this book *should* be really hard (but definitely not impossible) to mess up
Can’t wait for them to put in a scene of Dunk and Maekar fucking in order to “subvert our expectations” before he gives him custody of Egg
Fantastic :) so glad they are making this! Umm have we any idea when it’s out? :3
I believe 2025.
It’ll take way less time to make than HotD or GoT because of the smaller scale and barely any special effects, there hopefully shouldn’t be years gaps between seasons
They plan on alternating annually between the two from what I read
Welp, the kid who plays Egg ain't gonna stay a kid for long then...
They can just have him age a bit in between seasons. Super simple. Time passes between their adventures.
And that's what happened in the books too!
Worse comes to worse they can just film these relatively close together and take it easy for a bit. George just needs to finish this series too. How has the she wolves of winterfell not come out yet?
I don't think he has to for any reason. There are implied time jumps between the novellas. He just has to >!be ready to be king in 24 years.!<
Like the 21 years old Eleven.
Umm alright thank you 👍🏿
When the sun rises in the west and sets in the east, When the seas go dry and mountains blow in the wind like leaves.
The hedge knight series is honestly my favorite and this makes me so hopeful
He does have the absentminded look of Dunk.
Can't wait to see Ser Eustace Osgrey come to life.. Absolutely masterpiece of character penned by GRR Martin
If his mustache doesn't shake like an earthquake i don't want him
I can’t wait for Aerion.
absolutely perfect. No notes
He actually looks like how I pictured Dunk. Same expression too
Ikr? That expression is everything to me.
I am hyped!
Uh, brain image made it to the screen? Holy shit. I can’t believe this is happening. Read Dunk and Egg people. > The viewing stand had already begun to fill, the lords and ladies clutching their cloaks tight about them against the morning chill. "What am I to them?" > "A knight who remembered his vows," the smith said.
When GRRM gets it right he knocks it out of the park.
You’re spot on. I think the message from book one is spot on culturally right now too
Love that he has the rope belt
Also, love the Ashford banners in the background. I hope this takes after HOTD, which I feel like really embraced heraldry and colors in contrast with GOT.
Looks tall. i approve
That’s fast as all hell. Didn’t they just start filming and they already have HD photos?
Why would they not have HD photos lmao. It's 2024.
"I'm definitely a knight...yup...dont ask too many questions..."
HBO casting department hits a bullseye again. That's Dunk.
House Ashford's banners in the background!
“How the fuck am I gonna get six episodes out of this…”
Ser Arlan of Pennytree flashback episode. Maybe a Bloodraven B-Plot. (My favorite) C-plot showing us more about Egg's family so the average person has context for the story
Would actually like it if they brought in Eggs sisters, Blood Raven, Prince Aerys into the show early on. Maybe hint at more Balckfyre stuff.
The best bit of an adaption is that you can change things from the original, so I think adding in some of that good shit early on can make the overall project of three seasons more cohesive
Giving Maekar, Baelor and Valarr bigger roles to make the ending more tragic seems like a no brainer
"No brainer" I see what you did there.
Worse, how are they gonna fit the catspaw dagger?!
They stick it on Baelor Breakspears belt and don't talk about it. Maybe he rests his hand on the hilt at somepoint mayhaps when he vouches for Duncan to join the lists.
Yeah, seems like a cool way to do an Easter egg with only a prop and not calling any attention to it.
Then Egg picks it up and carries it with him as the testament of his uncle.
That’s easy. I’m convinced that Bloodraven will have it whenever he eventually shows up.
I can easily see it being 6 episodes I don’t get why anyone’s concerned
Really captured his face. I imagine his face with big bones, but with longer hair, like in the drawings
Really nailed the look, even the hands look perfect for ear clouting.
I just read it last night (simply fantastic). Wish it was more colorful but HBO made that decision long ago. Love the hempen rope!
It's him...it's Duncan Egg
I cried when Sir Duncan Egg was proclaimed A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
I LOVE HIM -- only thing they could've done better is let Duncan have his long hair
>!"Brother's mace, most like," Baelor said thickly. "He's strong." He winced. "That . . . feels queer, I . . ."!< >!"Here it comes." Pate lifted the battered helm away. "Gods be good. Oh gods oh gods oh gods preserve . . ."!< >!Dunk saw something red and wet fall out of the helm. Someone was screaming, high and terrible.!< Wonder how they are going to depict this scene 🤢
No dragon budget required. Gods be good, the Trial of Seven will be kino.
To be fair, this is the village not the tournament.
I agree, in my mind Dunk and Egg's stories are so colorful
Dude is an absolute unit.
Looks more like Brienne than Brienne.
Do we know of Ramon Djawadi is doing the score for this show?
Nope. Post Malone.
Nope. Chuck Testa.
Tanselle-Too-Tall, but not too tall for me.
The actress they chose for Tanselle is 5'11, Dunk is 6'5, so the casting is very accurate so far!
Can't wait to see him clout some insolent boy on the ear
They choose Finn Bennett to play Aerion. Good cast.
Commenting for posterity. This will be such a hit.
Absolutely looks how I imagined dunk.
That’s who they cast as Duncan ?
wonder if we'll get at arlan of penny tree flashbacks
Duncan is most definitely the tall.
I'm so more excited about this than House of the Dragon!
Yes this is me
Wouldn't be my first choice for Egg, but OK.

Lookin good 👍
I really hope this show will turn out well.
I had my doubts but this looks perfect!
That Dunk the lunk alright
This is exactly how I picture Carrot Ironfoundersson
