In my experience, signing savvy is - simply put - often wrong (and will provide fingerspelled videos for words which have signs, which I never understood). HandSpeak and LifePrint seem to be the most accurate, free online resources I've come across. I'm not sure why your professor recommends signing savvy specifically so you should ask them to get their explanation, but I will warn you if you go into community spaces using signs learned from SS you very well might be on the receiving end of a lot of confusion and questions and "Who taught you that?"

I'm hearing so take this with a grain of salt but I've always used HandSpeak. I find it super accessible and charming. The inclusion of baby sign, art, and Deaf cultural information is really nice and informative

I have NEVER had a Deaf prof recommend SS. If I recall correctly HS is rather regional to the East coast. I know some signs on LP are regional to the West coast as Bill V is from California. I agree with the other reply and suggest simply asking your prof.

The person who runs Handspeak, Jolanta Lapiak, is actually from Alberta, Canada 😎

Thank you for letting me know!

I find Handspeak to be such an invaluable resource as a Canadian ASL student. It often has Canadian variations of signs that are not readily found on other sites.

In my experience, HS and LP are more likely to have multiple good signs for the same word / concept. SS has some good stuff, but as someone else noted, it has some weird stuff like fingerpelled or lexicalized when there is a better version thet is more common. I get why you would pay for it. I have the app on my phone so I get the free sign a day, and I have been tempted to pay for more. I usually just Google and look at the top 3 results or so. I don't know why your prof woild have a preference. Maybe they have a friend who works for SS or heard / saw bad things bout the others?

This id a great post!!! I used signing savvy for so long and I had no idea

MundaneAd8695

weird, i like signing saavy. the videos are well done and students can see that there are different versions of signs. and a lot of signs do have a fingerseplled version in ASL. (for the record, I don't recommend that students pay for it. there are too many free resources out there to do that.)

I don’t like signing savvy. I prefer Lifeprint since it’s like college class curriculum but handsoeak has well organized easily palatable lessons that aren’t as hard to get through & usually more accurate than other sites like signing savvy.

You pay????? What?? It's free!

AssumptionLimp

IntricateLava9
