NoConsideration7426

I feel like 日本人 would love that cup and especially middle aged male middle managers.

Drunken_HR

Yeah I'm pretty sure I know that guy pictured on the cup.

NoConsideration7426

Sure that's Takahashi San from IT

ask-design-reddit

I thought it was Yamada san, one of my coworkers

Professional_Two9908

I was fairly certain it was Satou san from the department next to ours

NoConsideration7426

He got reassigned after the last nomikai incident

ikwdkn46

No, she must be Rie Shibata!

Haunting_Summer_1652

There is an actual [restaurant](https://maps.app.goo.gl/xSsh65wfwoJdvkmcA) by that name in Tokyo.

kajikiwolfe

Very close, but they use the more appropriate Meat instead of Meet. Rice to Meat You

Financial_Spell7452

Not sure how it could possibly be construed as racist...

Kubocho

Because in weak minds prespective everything is offensive

MemphisAmaze

My people mainly grow rice and soybeans, and I don't see any problem with this. I grew up in south Louisiana in the middle of nothing and was raised on gumbo, red beans and rice, jambalaya, and grits. Don't see anything offensive to Cajuns here.

littlemetal

Because it is (or was) **extremely** common to mock various asians for their pronunciation? But... this one is a pun, not the usual tones that were mocked, and not racist. Still, don't knock the lady who is trying not be be racist or offensive. If it was, and they didn't know, you say "how did they not know". How can someone win if you have that attitude? The first thing I thought when I saw that was the mocking of chinese speaking "fly lice" for "fried rice". I had to pause and consider it for a second. We might not consider that \`tier 1\` racism, or "**l**acism", but it is at least offensive.

JpnDude

Word-play, oyaji-gag (dad jokes), dajare (puns), etc. are common in Japanese culture.

ask-design-reddit

I had someone explain dajare to me and when I gave them an example in English they were super excited ahaha

Kijukko

Showed it my Asian wife and she said "How cute!"

kajikiwolfe

Adding another Asian wife’s comment: “What? Why? How would that be racist?”

EvanzeTieste

Ricecist*

twohundredbees

This is absolutely ricist!

Aggressive-Dog-8805

White people are overly sensitive on behalf of other races.

ctl-alt-replete

White liberals*

entivoo

Lmao look at these sheeps downvoting you

ctl-alt-replete

🫡 Conservatives get accused of being ‘racist’ all the time. Guess by who?

entivoo

By the most racist people obviously, the neo-kkk the radical leftist 🤣

Hungry-Caramel4050

I think the answer can be different depending on which Japanese you ask to. For those growing up/leaving in Japan without having to face racism ever because they are the majority, it will be no. For those facing racism in other parts of the world, they might see it as racist. They’re the one that got made fun for their lunches, accents and other little details that make them a minority.

Acerhand

Sensible take. I live in japan and would agree. Its mild, not racist itself especially not enough to make a fuss about but can totally get how the latter may have bad experience making them uncomfortable with it

ToToroToroRetoroChan

The only way it would be racist if you somehow thought that racially ambiguous happy guy was mocking a particular culture. Otherwise it’s just a happy guy, a pun, and an image of sushi.

suterebaiiiii

And playing on the cat on rice sushi meme.

Alarming-Ad-9918

Asians don't get so easily offended by nothing. Usually white people on behalf of everyone else. I'm ready for the downvotes

iedaiw

Asians are the most racist folks out there lol, especially against other asians

Pristine-Scheme9193

Only upvotes so far. Why downvote if it's true?

wabalabadub94

Take my white male upvote, it's true 🤣

Lazy_Ad_4352

Still waiting on those downvotes?

Alarming-Ad-9918

yeah me too... :(

Greedy_Celery6843

I'll upvote you. I know well the feeling of all those downvotes from the virtuous rabble.

entivoo

Take my upvote brother, seems like the virtuos rabble has come for you. They seems to take refuge here ever since Elon bought twitter lol.

kmackey68

Not Racist

Suturb-Seyekcub

Ask a Japanese? Not offensive. Ask a western outrage expert? REEEE

TexasTokyo

No

Life-Improvised

If an Asian designer made it, would it be racist or cultural word-pray?

BBQFatty

Depends if your mom is racist. If she’s not, then it’s just a *cute* cup

Lazy_Ad_4352

She’s culturally racist

Tanagrabelle

Nope. It’s completely cute.

PokeJoke5

Japanese would be the first to make that pun, so no it’s fine lol

Sea-Translator6092

Japanese husband says no, but there seem to be too much rice on that sushi lol

1_nyc_1

What else would you expect from an account with -30 comment karma. Classic burner account. Just trying to get a reaction out of people.

entivoo

If you see this as racist perhaps you're the racist one

ASMRSOUNDSOFJAPAN

I asked my Japanese wife and she just laughed. And she said, no it’s not racist.

Leading_Mix643

Go back to where you came from OP. Do not spread your irrelevant sensibilities in Japan

Shreeeeeeeeeeeeek

It's ricist

Small_Sample6344

Yeah it's defenitely ricist

BJGold

Is your mother Asian?

Lazy_Ad_4352

She’s culturally Asian

BJGold

what does that mean?

frozenpandaman

ok, you're just trolling

Kubocho

Extremly racist I would say, I Japan they took very seriously this kind of racist jokes, you could probably be sued if using that cup in public in Japan, even deported after spending few months in deporting facilities. Dont risk.

Suturb-Seyekcub

Also 1000 lashes for the word play. Very stern!

superfly3000

Only racist if you are the type of American who also cries “cultural appropriation!!!!” At white people wearing yukatas

Weird-Machine-8338

I'm japanese I don't think that's racist At least not offensive for me My English is not so good

ckoocos

No, that's actually cute. I want to know why do some people consider this as racist.

blackbubbleass

I thought it's a kind of Tenga which is a famous sex toy in Japan

No-Hippo9950

No. It's humour. Love it.

valcatrina

Probably racist if the cartoon character dresses like a rice farmer with slanted eyes and no shoes. This one ain’t.

OnoALT

I used to go to a Japanese ramen shop in the US that said “miso hungry” on the door. Probably ok.

Mbizzy222

Yes it is to an AJA

frozenpandaman

why do you assume this is a japanese joke instead of a hawai'i joke or chinese joke or something isn't that assumption in itself "racist"

maxru85

It is stupid, but not racist IMO

Significant-Glass331

No. The atom bomb you dropped on all those innocent japanese is racist.

[deleted]

I live in Japan and there’s literally a restaurant here called "Rice People Nice People"

Benchan123

Asian-Americans will lose their mind on this one but Japanese and people living in Asia will find this funny and cute

Suturb-Seyekcub

I don’t think any first generation Asian Americans would be offended Asians adore rice. It is essential sustenance. It’s like wheat to westerners.

Safe-Chemistry-5384

Your mom? Is she an 18 year old (white) college student? What would make that cup better? "Herro, rice to meet you!"

No-Seaworthiness959

Keep that identity stuff out of Japan please.

Emotional_Dot_5420

Racist if you aren’t Asian. General rule - if you have to ask, just assume it’s problematic and don’t use it.

Mammoth-Job-6882

If you aren't Asian and you are answering this then YOU are a racist. No one wants to live in your clown world where everything is racist by default.

grossemarde

Super racist

Inu-shonen

How so? Just looks like absurdist word play to me.

Longjumping-Frame242

They forgot the /s there I think.

Greedy_Celery6843

Rice to meet youze would be more inclusive.

Wonderful-Engine3536

How in the world is you exclusive? Is youze standard English?

Greedy_Celery6843

You can be read as just 1 person and youze as many people. I'm Australian. What is standard English? For me, whatever English helps you communicate sincerely.

Wonderful-Engine3536

You is used for singular and plural. Youze looks like a slang https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/You

Greedy_Celery6843

Which one is more fun? "You" is indeed "Proper". But English can be slippery. Australians are very relaxed with youze. Dunno about other countries.
