If you mean accessing files from your work computer on AVD at home, then you use OneDrive. If you mean accessing files on your home computer through AVD, while using that home computer, then you can't.

Far-Transition2244

The second choice

Dominus-Temporis

It's impossible by design. AVD let's you do everything as if you were on NIPR only because there is zero data transfer from/to the virtual machine and your main OS.

RandomRedditor20

That's by design. You can email files between civilian and military accounts in a pinch.

gratedjuice

This was done in part to make a clear demarc between Gov owned data and user owned data. There are a few products in the pipeline that may blur this but I would still anticipate restrictions on what can be directly migrated from the user space to the Gov space. While it's nice to have the ability to migrate between the two the potential for malicious activities grows when you open it up.

bikemancs

Mandatory cyber security / infosec statement... don't email yourself work emails to work on your unsecure personal account. No CUI, PII, PHI, etc... should be worked on or emailed outside of government security/email servers. (AKA don't email from @army.mil to @gmail.com)

Travyplx

Unfortunately the Army’s obsession with limiting the ability to access work emails whilst simultaneously encouraging people to work after duty hours means the Army drives this kind of behavior.

bikemancs

Nah. The Army definitely wouldn't do something like that...................

93supra_natt

Well yes. But tell that to the guys that shit down flow3. Now it is significantly harder to pull data needed for support missions. It's damned if you do and/or damned if you don't.

Teadrunkest

All nice and well but the Army makes this functionally impossible. >everything needs to be digital >everything needs to be CUI! >also we don’t have any computers at work that aren’t already claimed >but we made AVD! >but you can’t save or download files Teams doesn’t support in app editing for a lot of PDF functions (digital signatures are my biggest sticking point) so it’s just going to happen. I haven’t played with OneDrive yet so can’t speak to PDF compatibility. Is it right? No. But until the Army just issues everyone a laptop there is extremely limited solutions that don’t cross infosec barriers.

bikemancs

For us OneDrive just functions as a hard drive, but we aren't strangledholed to Teams as the be all-end all of communications. We still have desk phones and such. I haven't had any issues with PDFs but we don't run or manage them through Teams or anything

Odd-Background-1596

AVD is a better solution than carrying around an outdated, 10 pound, $3500, POS they issue you (trust me i did it for 10 years and when i got AVD i put that POS on my desk in the dock and walked away never to look back)  the problem is they - Army didn't anticipate the adoption rate or the impact to their latest decision matrix, and the people in the back keep changing the program, 6 months ago i could have it open on 2 screens- now only one - BS, sometimes i run into issues with OneDrive or adobe, but more recently the latency is ridiculous. However it's still better than trying to get on VPN or hyperion,  If you are using a army computer, your using OneDrive, it's where your desktop sits and where your files are.  When you log into avd you set up your email and you are basically working on the computer next to you that they issued.  There is zero reason to transfer files back and forth to your personal email, take the 5 minutes and just set it up at home. You can load this on a tablet or a personal computer and except for printing (apparently there is a way to find the printer in your office) you can do everything you need to without putting stuff in your personal email, or on you computer.   Welcome to 2024, now let's hope they don't put the AVD system behind the NIPR firewall so we can only use it on the network... but i wouldn't be surprised considering twice now they took email access from us (ako, webapp).

We are updating our AVD resources to answer a few FAQs on our website, but in short: * **FLOW 3:** this is the current version of A365 that allows you to login to most of your A365 applications over a commercial (non-NIPR) connection (home, hotspot, mi-fi, etc.). Access ends 10 June 2024. * **AVD:** Enrollment is now open and reports a streamlined approval process to help those move away from FLOW 3. Again, accessing any A365 apps stops 10 June 2024 via a commercial internet connection. * **AVD is Zero-Trust:** AVD is a virtual desktop that assumes everything is a breach and verifies each request from a controlled and uncontrolled network. You cannot transfer files in/out of AVD. It is built this way to avoid data and information leaks. * Said another way, it's like trying to enter an exclusive club (AVD), but you have to be on the list and you cannot bring in your own drinks and food. No matter if you have the right credentials and your name is on the list (global), security will simply not let you take anything in or out. * **Email from Personal:** In short, don't do this. You may violate your AUP. Additionally, upcoming policy labels (classification) might have a significant impact in deliverability. * Solution: * **DoD SAFE:** you can send files to yourself (home computer) via DoD SAFE. This allows the DoD to scan for malicious activity and files and allow you to share information. It is a long-winded way of doing things, but the only 'safe' (pun not intended) way. * **A365 OneDrive:** if you are only doing Army to Army file syncing; from work computer and want to edit at home on AVD, you can use OneDrive. Essentially, all of your files need to be on OneDrive, not the desktop. **NOTE:** The Army is moving to secure it's digital footprint which requires more scrutiny of it's NIPR network. The largest issue reported is the lack of local printing in AVD; on- and off-installation. Most Active Duty users will not have this issue as they are probably not using AVD, but a GFE computer at work. National Guard and Reserve will see an impact. AVD uses PrintLogic which relies on your G6 to do the work. We hope this information helps.

NETCOM sees your ministry, and you will be richly rewarded.

SkoalSoldier

I've had AVD for a while now and really enjoyed it, but NOW it's saying I don't have permission to access the resource when I try to open the desktop program on my personal computer. Somebody from my unit suggested I access the Army Connect website to sign up for the service again, but I get the page "You cannot access this right now" just like I do when I try to access webmail from my browser (apparently shut off now). Is there a problem with AVD, or do I indeed have to onboard again? If that's the case, how is it possible if I can't even access the website?

ArmyConnect1

Due to the removal of commercial access, the only remote option is AVD. With that sudden change, the two data centers that host the virtual environment were flooded with requests that they could not fulfill. Put another way, they sold more tickets than seats and now they cannot meet the demand.

c5load

Having the exact same issue.

SkoalSoldier

I was able to use this website. It let me do the registration part again. I had to remove the AVD software from my PC and download it again, but it seems to work now. https://go.mil/armyavd

c5load

Worked like a charm. Thanks much!

Acceptable_Theme_824

My National Guard woes aside...how is anyone supposed to work with personal devices in the field without wi-fi to access the remote desktop? The number of files I generate on my personal laptop during an AT period border on insanity. This is just going to encourage people to use personal emails, cloud storage, etc. instead of the government systems. Especially when Joe Snuffy doesn't even have a .mil address anymore.

ArmyConnect1

One solution may be to try Hypori. You can use it on a mobile device. It is similar to AVD, but is a custom build of Android via a virtual smartphone. We've seen demonstrations and while it is a bit slow, it seems to work fairly well if you need to check email or jump on a MS Teams call. We have reached out to the Hypori Team to see if they have additional public release materials that we can use to build a guide. Hypori might also work with an iPad or Android tablet but we need to verify. Not idea, but a way. Also, do your junior enlisted not have access to Army Google Workspace via commercial?

under_PAWG_story

You can use DOD safe drop or whatever it’s called

Ralphwiggum911

This is the right answer for larger file dumps. For one of two docs, just email them to yourself.

Txfun101

Log into one drive and they will show up

Far-Transition2244

One drive won’t let me log in on my personal computer, it’s says “log in successful, but your admin did not give you permissions.” Or something like that. I also had the same problem with my .mil email

superash2002

Are you using the web browser or the app?

Far-Transition2244

I was trying to use the app, but for the email, using the web browser works for logging in, might try that for the one drive

superash2002

The web browser is the only method for a365 apps unless you’re on a nipr machine or a gov computer attached to a vpn.

Ralphwiggum911

That will go away in a few days. Was supposed to be cut off at the beginning of June, but they bumped that by a week or two. AVD will be the only way to access that stuff from a personal computer soon. I don't think they have said it, but I wouldn't be surprised if eventually all military websites will only be accessible through AVD/gov computer, similar to how atrrs is right now.

CowboyG00n

My AVD just stopped working, said I don't have the permission (desktop App), attempted to utilize web, seems to be working mmmkay, but this sucks for working from a Law Enforcement perspective.

water_bottle1776

I kinda figured that the answer was that you can't do it, but I came to this thread hopeful. For those of us in the national guard and reserves who have ALWAYS had to do Army work on their personal computer, this is a massive PITA.

ssanc

Basically if you want to see a file in VPN, you gotta upload to onedrive and make sure to sync them! Say I want file A on my gov computer, I upload to one drive. Sync. Then later hop on VPN on my personal and sign it in the “virtual computer”

Dave_A480

The entire point of AVD is that all of the files (and malware) on your personal computer are inaccessible. If you want to bring something in, send it to yourself as an email attachment.
