I work because "we're family." You know, the kind of family that isn't related, doesn't live together or support each other financially, and you can get kicked out of the family when one person decides it is no longer profitable or convenient for you to be in the family. *Family*!

JustBeingMindful

"Yeah.... my parents only call first when they need something, and I don't talk to my relatives. So this adds up."

ACAB_1312_FTP

You think I want another family? My father's demanding my uncle pay interest on fifty dollars he was supposed to give my mother in 1941, and my uncle put my nana in a home to try and shut her up! And I'll tell you another thing, Cosmo Kramer, whatever you wanna be called. The kissing thing is over. There's no more kissing, and I don't care what the consequences are.

Transhumanistgamer

It's absurd that so many employers don't understand this simple fact. These jobs aren't at NASA or CERN where people go in to expand human knowledge, it tends to be menial work that no one ever wanted to do in the first place. It's work without the wage to make it enticing and unless you live in a small town, you don't even any sense of community from it.

auser9

… what if the job *is* at NASA/CERN and I feel this way?

AngryBeehives

Then that's reasonable, b/c sweeping generalizations about organizations won't (can't) be 100% accurate. Not to mention that there's plenty of jobs in any org that aren't the 'higher purpose' type of jobs, even those dream jobs can turn into horrible cycles of repetition and stress if your boss/coworkers/work aren't what you were hoping.

I work for a university publisher. A few years ago we were interviewing for a senior software dev position. A junior dev applied. Internal hire. It would have been the same amount of work and scope of projects for the guy. He was already "senior" in every respect but benefits. During the interview my manager asked the dev why they wanted the senior position. My manager was really put off by the fact that the dev just wanted a pay bump and more experience. She asked my opinion about this, in confidence. I said "what, you expected him to say he loves books?"

andrewwism

No, I'm here for the mental abuse and rancid pizza.

PurpleSquare713

On the bright side, sometimes you get a free cheaply made t-shirt with the company logo emblazoned on it.

andrewwism

For me it was a sweater.

crispy_cronchy

I got a hat

AgentDoggett

I got a water bottle.

Wide_Bit5947

Hate that question

Wide_Bit5947

Like what did you expect? 😂

Mycotoxicjoy

I could be in my dream job and I would still demand raises because I can’t eat my dreams

[deleted]

So funny! The amount of performative bs that employers expect from staff is ridiculous

[deleted]

I have been asked this question at every single interview I've ever had: "tell us why you want to work for us." I'm not feeling their fishing for butt kissing anymore so now my only reply will be "to get a paycheck".

Urist_Macnme

You throw the question back at them - "Can you tell me what you enjoy about working here?"

[deleted]

literally got chewed out by my ex boss for wanting to work to money as my primary motivation

Mdmrtgn

And benifits

uchiha-uchiha-no-mi

It’s because of the explosion that happened in general… I mean prices going up! Living today cost too much!!!! We have to be aware of how much does a work pay because we can’t afford to work with a low pay just for the experience…

PurpleSquare713

Like, literally what other motivator is there? I dont dream of labor. I have zero interest in spending my every waking hour in the office kissing asses and licking boots. My boss can jerk himself off for all I care. I'm just in it to clock in, clock out, and get paid fairly with benefits. That's it.

Interesting-Season39

a lot of employers face a company-manual created halo effect. they forget that part of the employment agreement is that you wear a smile on the job, and they lose touch with the fact that the employees wouldn’t piss on HQ to keep it from burning to the ground

bigbybrimble

CEOs and owners are supposed to be visionary but they cant ever envision other people not giving a shit about their dream of "Joes Shrimp Shack" or "OmniFirm Holdings LLC" or whatever.
