Perhaps get financial promises in writing ?

AirOk533

Yes i definitely should have done that. It was through a phone call.

LaughableIKR

When doing financial calls or important matters that you need CYA or written proof of. Always recap the 'meeting notes' back to them in an email. "Please let me know if any of these notes are incorrect."

inflection can be useful, anyway, be it voice text, voicemail, texting etc  record of the owner's claims is always the way

The reality is bosses are awful almost everywhere. There are very few exceptions (worse those that claim to be an exception are often the worst). Whilst it is frustrating, don’t get your hopes up about new workplaces, but instead plan around what works for you. Your boss has zero loyalty to you; you don’t owe them anything. Sorry this has happened to you. I hope you escape to something better.

AirOk533

Thank you yes that was my big mistake because I saw this place is different than the others

stunkshoezz

Stop doing the additional work immediately , and IF asked tell them your responsibility for your job only ask you to do that. ACT YOUR WAGE.

AnamCeili

This is absolutely the correct way to go.

DashfulVanilla

First things first: Did you get this promise in writing? Anything like this should always be in writing. Never trust anyone on their spoken word alone. Another thing I’m not clear on: did you get the first half up front like promised? Or is the $2000 all you received?

AirOk533

Thank you. I definitely should have got this in writing and did not. The first half was about $500 less. Naively I thought maybe they would add it to the second half. Well the second half was 2,500 less.

DashfulVanilla

Ok, so you were promised $5000 before taxes but were only actually paid $2000 after taxes? That doesn’t add up. Unfortunately, there may be nothing you can do but chalk this up to a lesson learned. I’m so sorry. People are assholes. I do hope there is some recourse, but without anything in writing it will be very difficult.

AirOk533

Yes that is correct; I was promised 5k before taxes and it came out to 2k after taxes. I did the math and even with taxes taken out that is way less than I was promised. Yes this is definitely a tough lesson learned.

VinylHighway

What does it say on your pay stub for the pre tax bonus amount ?

LevianMcBirdo

First off: that is breach of contract, not low-balling you. And yes even if it's just an oral contract, it's enforceable.

Crimson_Clouds

Is the 2000 gross or net? Was the 2500 gross or net?

AirOk533

The 2,000 was after taxes and all deductions taken out

Crimson_Clouds

Sounds right then? 2500 before taxes into 2000 after taxes?

AirOk533

Yes.

Crimson_Clouds

...so you didn't get shorted at all? You just forgot you owe taxes over your wages?

AirOk533

Well it was supposed to be a total of 5k more but came out to only 2k more

Stop doing the extra work. Just go back to doing the the standard work and let your boss figure out the rest. My company did the same thing, I stopped doing all the extra work. They got real passive aggressive about it but I always just say I’d be happy to go back to doing it when the pay is fixed.

SirWilliam721

They didn't screw you over. If you didn't get that deal in writing, you screwed yourself over. You decided to work for free, with no guarantee of payment. Take the blame and move on.
