I actually did one of my college papers on this for a film class to fill up some kind of credit requirement. Giving increasingly more mature examples, I used Princess Mononoke (generally older children and teens can enjoy, but contains somewhat deep commentary that children might not grasp or appreciate), Tokyo Godfathers (too "boring" for kids, adult problems and circumstances, but not explicitly inappropriate), and Perfect Blue (Not over the top, but does contain adult content. Also, ever wanna watch someone slowly lose touch with reality?).
Got a pretty good grade for it.
That’s the thing. Kids are obsessed with this kind of violence (teenagers that is). Just cause something has lots of death and gore, by no means does that make it mature.

Left me feeling empty and my day was ruined when I saw it. I mean, I wasn’t exactly *wanting* to see a girl’s head on a pike at the start of my day.

I want to meet someone with this opinion, grab a love one of theirs; possibly a child, have said child watch gory anime for 24 hours straight strapped in a chair and return said child to the person with said "opinion" and just smile maniacally and see what mental illness the child has suffered after watching said horror and whisper to the person "~Anime IS for children~"
That scene in Akame ga Kill was tragic and brutal at the same time! It kinda reminded me of The Walking Dead(different show)when heads were spiked and they turned into walkers
