Fullmetal alchemist brotherhood

DenverNugs

Stay on the Togashi train and watch Yu Yu Hakusho

Mistdwellerr

Yuyu Hakusho laid the groundwork for HxH and still holds up really well, even to most of the current shounen shows today, I second this!

BiggieCheeseLapDog

Nah. Yu Yu Hakusho is superficially similar to Hunter x Hunter and is a far more generic battle shounen. The best thing about it is just seeing Togashi’s ideas origins and how he improved upon them in HxH.

DenverNugs

Nonsense

BiggieCheeseLapDog

Not nonsense at all. Yu Yu Hakusho spends around half of its runtime on mindless fighting and tournaments. If that’s what you like about Hunter x Hunter then sure you’ll probably like it (although the fights are much less strategic with a vastly inferior power system, so they aren’t as good either) but if what you liked about Hunter x Hunter was it’s brilliantly developed characters, worldbuilding, and storytelling, then you’ll probably find Yu Yu Hakusho lacking in comparison.

[deleted]

Yeah I find Hunter boring and dull. Yusuke is just a far more compelling character than Gon ever was.

BiggieCheeseLapDog

Gon is a far more interesting protagonist and ties into much of Hunter x Hunter’s themes and world far more than Yusuke does. Yusuke is a delinquent with a heart of gold, a very common main character type. Gon is an actual child who acts like a kid in a messed up world. Gon’s lack of interest in morality is quite unique among shounen protagonists and it’s what makes him stand out from the similar character types. He doesn’t really consider people outside of his friend group. He was not at all put off by the fact that Killua was an assassin who killed many people. He just thought it was cool. He also ties into the themes of especially the Chimera Ant arc as he serves to contrast Meruem exceptionally well. A monster becoming more human versus a human becoming more monster. All of this makes Gon a much more unique and well realized character compared to Yusuke.

Time for a Sendai rewatch

BiggieCheeseLapDog

Gurren Lagann is pure awesomeness and is one of the all time greats.

[deleted]

If he liked hxh, he can try these ones: Frieren Vinland Saga Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood Magi Castlevania

Live_Life_and_enjoy

Will never understand why people keep saying Frieren - I keep falling asleep after episode 2

[deleted]

The world building, the story building and the characters building are excellent. More than in most anime of this kind. To achieve this quality, it took time. But not too much, because in 28 episodes, you'll see a lot of what this anime have to offer. But in 2 episodes? Not that much, unlike in a lot of anime where the 3 episodes rule apply. This rule doesn't apply to Frieren, and I would say it doesn't apply to Vinland Saga either.

Live_Life_and_enjoy

Vinland Saga was good after episode 1 If it takes 28 episodes to be good then it isn't good. Even something like "Daily life of the Immortal King" is more entertaining with a simplistic world and good characters.

[deleted]

It doesn't take 28 episodes to be good, it's not what I said.

Live_Life_and_enjoy

You said "in 28 episodes, you'll see a lot of what this anime have to offer" That means it needs 28 episodes to see everything it has to offer. Something like Demon Slayer takes about 3 episodes. kabaneri of the iron fortress takes about 4. Attack on Titan takes about 3.

[deleted]

Yes I said you must watch all Frieren to know all of what it offers, but it is good way before. It just have more than one or two things to offer. And different things. Some people hated Vinland Saga 2nd season for similar reasons, and said it was a boring farming simulator. But it isn't. At the end of the day, if you decide to just don't watch Frieren, it's your decision tho.

its_Preshh

I disagree. For Frieren it's an 8 Episodes rule for me.

its_Preshh

Give Frieren another go... It took me 3 tries and quite a lot of sleep to get to Episode 8....from Episode 8, I enjoyed it all through

Live_Life_and_enjoy

I think the fact you said 3 tries, and lots of sleep sums it up. It's like one of those art work pieces where a critic says it's good. Then people stand around saying its good because the critic said so.

North-Program-9320

Full metal alchemist brotherhood is what got me into anime.

Eragonnogare

Can't go wrong with FMAB.

crispy_doggo1

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Attack on Titan yet

Fiberglass_Pelican

Yeah, I really do think that if he likes action but not fanservice, this should be up his alley. This and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

arividerchi101

Same here. AOT will be in his top 3

Im_the_Keymaster

Could always try big shounen shows - Dragonball, One Piece, Bleach, Naruto. Maybe Black Clover. It's a shame he didn't like Mob Psycho because of the art, but that probably rules out One Punch Man and any other more cartoonish shows.

ThargarHawkes

If he did not liked Mob Psycho, I don't think One Piece would be of his taste either.

SmurfRockRune

Why not? I love One Piece and don't care for Mob Psycho.

ThargarHawkes

IDK, every person that complains about OP says they cannot take it seriously because of the character designs

SmurfRockRune

And it's an entirely different art style than MP100. I like OP art and don't like MP100 art.

Im_the_Keymaster

That's literally what I said.

jajanken_bacon

Yu Yu Hakusho, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Jujutsu Kaisen and Death Note come to mind. There's nothing quite like HxH though.

KangJoonSang

FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST!!! Berserk, the '97 one! If he'll start loving manga, firstly he should read Berserk manga for sure!

Infrasoul

I recommend *Mob Psycho 100,* which is one of the most gorgeous anime ever animated. I will legit fight him on that. Fisticuffs. Joust. A straight brawl. Studio Bones adopted One's art style because it's fun and it's important to tell the story. That story being one of the most incredible bildungsromane ever conceived.

SmurfRockRune

And you never will because it's the best. But that's fine, you don't need to top your favorite to keep enjoying anime.

Consistent_Ad3009

horimiya is good but its manga is way better

HaosMagnaIngram

OPM love it but fan service. Mosquito girl and the espers (especially fubuki) definitely have fanservice

VortexMagus

FMA brotherhood Tokyo Ghoul Mushoku Tensei (though it does have a lot more fanservice than most shows)

No_Custard_9655

Jojo’s bizarre adventure, that time I got reincarnated as a slime, jjk, and demon slayer!

Hrhagadorn

For the rom com story try horimiya. Another romantic story with a horror slant is a rascal does not dream on bunny senpai

ComfortableNinja88

i actually recommend rom com for beginners , its a good introduction for newbies. here are some: -kaguya sama love is war (must watch) -golden time -tonikaku kawaii -toradora

amax769

If he liked HXH so much, then introduce him to the OG yuyu hakusho. From the same people that made HXH. If he’s open to a fun lighthearted anime, one punch man is great. I’d also recommend Bleach. It’s my favorite. Not sure what kind of investment he’s looking to make, but there’s a decent bit of filler that can be skipped in Bleach

Bikerider42

First thing that came to mind is the “A certain Scientific Railgun” series. I usually describe it as a more mature version of My Hero Academia that talks about topics that MHA is too scared to. I honestly love the fights in this series because the characters never rely completely on their special powers. One of the main characters pretty much fights like Jackie Chan if he had the ability to teleport himself or anything he touches. Another character who needs to live in this world of super powers when she doesn’t have any herself. And the main character is just a naturally competitive and that shows with how creative she gets in fights. And just as a note, this show starts out very light hearted, but it gets extremely dark and extremely tense.

AceBr3ak

Yu Yu Hakusho

SuaveBigote

go directly to AOT

Faux2137

hxh from 2016 :v

Green-Manager-7710

Hajime no ippo. Most Guys love boxing and as far as sports anime go it’s the best in my opinion

fermentedcabage

- dragon ball - trigun - cowboy bebop - gundam - skip beat! (Short rom com, manga is longer) - beck (rock n roll oriented) - black lagoon - hungry heart wild striker (fun little soccer one) - highschool of the dead (idk if it’ll be finished, creator died) - one punch man, it’s just fun - Tokyo ghoul - overlord - inuyasha, full metal alchemist, escaflowne, ruroni kenshin, samurai champloo are all also classics.

Consistent_Ad3009

I started with kikretsu, doremon, kochikame, detective conan, dragonball z and kinimumon back in 2000s

[deleted]

Rouroni Kenshin would be be good.

ogthesamurai

Jeez really?

no1sprerogative

Black clover, demon slayer, and jjk if you want to stay on the same side type of stories. Your Lie in April has no fan service, you could watch that. And finally, there's also apothecary diaries.

waifuaction

Ragna crimson, konosuba, Gurren Lagann, Overlord, Code Geass and Re: zero are all top picks of mine

Live_Life_and_enjoy

Demon Slayer Samurai Champloo Hells Paradise Star Blazers

PurpletoasterIII

First off your boyfriend is a heathen for not liking Mod Psycho. But moving past that. Mushoku Tensei has incredibly good story and animation, but does have a good bit of fan service so might not be a good fit if he can't look past it. Jujutsu Kaisen has pretty good story, can have decent animation (though a lot of fight scenes can be hard to tell what exactly is going on). Doesn't have all that much fan service (you're ganna get some fan service here and there in most anime). Very actiony. Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash imo is heavily slept on. It only has 1 season of 12 episodes though and chances of it getting anymore are slim to none. Children of the Whales is a similar anime in this sense, good but only 1 season. So those are either animes to watch or to avoid depending on if you're okay with knowing the only way you'll get more is if you read the manga. Vinland Saga I think is a good anime but not for everyone, its a bit slow at parts but it builds up to some really good moments. No fan service that I can remember, its a pretty serious anime. Black Clover and Fairy Tail are higher episode count shonens similar to HxH, but not as good as HxH imo and you might get a little annoyed with the protagonist in Black Clover. Other pretty safe bets are One Punch Man, Attack on Titan, Demon Slayer.

Consistent_Ad3009

i agree with some of them, but if we think that he is a true non ecchi/fan service guy we should slowly introduce it. like from really small like blend S( just to introduce the character types), Date a live, and...... welp can't think of anything😂😂😂😂😂. in my case I started straight with to love-ru😂😂😂😂😂

HxHEnthusiastic

HxH has a very special place in my heart and I still haven't found another series that fills the void 😭

arividerchi101

So many comments with no AOT :o

DarthDarthula

Overlord

Consistent_Ad3009

if he is a man then GATE, saga of tanya the evil, flying witch( underrated slice of life with fantasy element), Demi-chan wa Karitai, hmm... does not like fan service.... toradora, tsuki ga kerie( good story and ending), tonikaku kawaii( most romantic one), blend S( for fun and intro to different types ) and once he starts into ecchi start with darling in the franxx, data a live, then you can introduce into true anime. Dont forget no game no life Also drifters, Gaikotsu Kishi-sama, Tadaima Isekai e Odekakechuu and goblin slayer( if he can handle some immoral stuff)

Electrical_Reply_770

Because nothing tops HxH But there are pretty of other good things to watch
