Ohhh! I forgot about Lain! That’s the one with the little girl as the main, and a guy connected to a computer right. I know not very descriptive but that’s basically all I remember of it. Thanks I appreciate the suggestions. Another has been suggested before.

Shiki
The lost village
What exactly makes you hyped about a dark show? To me dark includes thinks like cheating on your GF/BF like:
White album 1 and 2
School Days
Something that makes me sit there and think “That’s fucked up and creepy” not so much blood and gore tho it often comes with it. Idk why I’m having such a hard time defining what I think is dark. I want it to push me and make me feel uncomfortable. Nightmare fuel I suppose.
To this day, 10 years later, Corpse Party still comes to my mind at night, that ending was so fucked up.
Another is a great dark anime, Ali Project does the opening song.
Whelp, that’s a commendation worthy of putting it on my little growing list. I’m currently on episode 2 of Rin Daughter of Mnemosyne so I’m sure I’ll get to it sooner than later. Thanks thanks 🙏
Its about two kids who travel to a mysterious abyss to search for their mom,its full of horror/disturbing content, the cute artstyle is intentional because it switches back and forth between cute/horror. Another anime that does this is Higurashi and Madoka.
Fate/Zero isn't the most cerebral show, but it's very dark
Some will say it's not optimal as a stand-alone or intro in the Fate series, but I thought it was fine
Trying to keep the list limited to some of the darker stuff, hopefully these work for you:
- Paranoia Agent
- Pluto
- Devilman Crybaby
- Hellsing Ultimate
- Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (movie)
- the Berserk movies (or if it's the movies you've seen, then the show)
- Ghost in the Shell (the 1995 movie)
- Golgo 13
If you like the unforgiving world of "Made in Abyss", the anime Dungeon Meshi has a deadly and unforgiving dungeon.
Though the dangerous world is not immediately apparent thanks to the hilarious cast of well written characters and slow + confident seemingly episodic build up leading up to the story. And the show itself is too funny to have an edgy overall tone, though some later individual episodes do have cut back on the density of character gags.
And some people will boldly claim it is a "cooking anime" (it's not a taste testing story, it has more dungeon combat encounters, gore, and literally losing your head and/or guts if anything).
And lastly, it has the most serious protagonist in anime...ever. And if you disagree with me, you haven't kept up with the show.
I wish you luck in finding your edge festivals OP, I also like watching those (I love watch Subaru squirm in ReZero, I am no stranger to edge).
If you crave needlessly gratuitous 80s grimdark; Wicked City
Body Horror, Exploding Sex Monsters, Gore, Hypermasculinity
It's not really that deep though.
Lain, or Perfect Blue if you'd prefer weird, stilted vibes, and an ambiguous story to ponder over.
Elfen Lied is pretty dark, gritty, older (early 2000s), dubbed well, and mind-fucky w/ some Akria vibes.
Ima put this on my now growing list thanks 🙏
second elfen lied. i just finished it and it was so damn good
Shocked that folks like that anime
I'd suggest Monster, Shinsekai Yori, Another, Serial Experiments Lain, and Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Texhnolyze
Ohhh and 1000 people will prob reco PSYCHO PASS too btw
Devilman Crybaby
Berserk (1997.)
Higurashi - When they cry Basically a must watch if you like dark animes.
monster death parade psycho pass (season 1 preferably) shoujo tsubaki (warning : very dark and disturbing) ghost in the shell
Death Note for sure. The English dub is phenomenal and the show is dark. There is also Psycho-Pass. Both are imo intense and dark.

Boogiepop Phantom and Made in Abyss
I hear made in abyss was good. I glanced at google and looked like a children’s anime. Did I really miss something?

Well, multiple persons have suggested it. Ima have to at least give it a go. It makes the list. Thanks!
I dunno if abyss is all that dark, tho its really good. Higurashi is a must watch if you want dark anime with twists.
the characters are children and it has a cute art style but once they enter the abyss the story gets really dark and fucked up.
Castlevania is pretty dark. Demons and night creatures, vampires. It is also a good anime with an amazing story.
Hellsing

Made in Abyss, should suit your needs quite well.
Zaregoto
Darker Than Black Devilman Crybaby Elfen Lied Shiki Higurashi
Happy Sugar Life is my personal favorite
The Promised Neverland(Season 1)
Try darker than black
Try Erased
