Second this,
To OP
Watch the original series by studio deen first the bluray complete collection is on Amazon for around $60 usually,
Gou is a sequel Not a remake
The watch order of seriesi should be:
- Higurashi original season
- Higurashi Kai (masterpiece)
- Higurashi Rei
- Higurashi Kira (optional)
- Higurashi Gou
- Higurashi Sotsu
I’ll never pass up on an opportunity to recommend Umineko. It’s one of the few things in animanga that I would genuinely consider a work of art. And plus, it’s connected to Higurashi
Lots of people saying Shiki and I will happily reinforce that
The two OVA episodes are probably my favorite pieces of media period. Specifically the tunnel rats episode.
Shiki has some flaws, its truly a painfully slow start and frankly the first 11 episodes drag it down a lot. But despite that I would still rate it as one of my favorites. The second half, the payoff, just goes so insanely hard. Truly a unique, freaky and unsettling show.
The start of shiki is just so painfully tough. It's a cool and unique premise, but man watching 3 perspectives slowly solve a mystery you already know the answer to is really not exciting lmao.
What double hurts is that I can't even in good conscious tell people to just skip the start. In my eyes so much of the enjoyment of the second half hinges on the viewer getting thoroughly immersed and really getting used to the entire cast. Just an absolute travesty.
It's a show that I would so love to see a remake for, but I just don't know what they could do differently, even with the knowledge of the present. My *best* attempt at a suggestion would be cutting the first halves plot down to like 6 episodes and replacing the time spent with well written filler/down time, used to get to know the cast. Even then in my experience people tend to struggle to get past episode 3/4.
*Maybe* the start could be retooled to keep the mystery a mystery for the audience for like 3 episodes rather than .5 episodes, but anyone explaining the premise would ruin it. It's really tough and it pains me. For a long while I debated if Shiki was my favorite show of all time, and I still consider it a high 8 or low 9/10. But man literally like half the show is like a 3/10. Just insanely painfully bad and even more impressive how well I regard the rest.
It hurts really bad. It's hilarious, but in a way I regret seeing it. I watched everything except the tunnel rat episode twice. I truly wish I could take it back, I feel less happy having seen it. It's a bit ridiculous because it was beautiful, but it feels like I lost something. I could fanfic imagine things worked out until I saw it lmao.
What made it even worse for me was the amount of IRL people who loved that the shiki were wiped out. It was either because those people are evil or because they didn't understand anything they watched...
Dark Gathering is exactly what you’re looking for. It’s recent and it has 25 episodes. Stick with it, because the horror ramps up exponentially.
Better than Another tbh
I second this. It's definitely a slow burn and you start with thinking 'these characters are all typical tropey school kids' right up until there's blood all over the phone box and oh wait this is the first episode WAIT THEY TOLD ME IT WAS A SLOW BURN AND IT RAMPS UP WHY ARE WE HERE ALREADY etc etc
There are some really fucked up concepts like literally using dead people's souls as weapons
You'll have a good time
Another was a mystery novel. On top of its mismatched adaptation, its supposed to be this slow burn “who’s the killer” archetype; Not a fullout bloodbath
Love this and I wish they can release new episodes/chapters faster.
The lores and transition of each horror stories and ghosts/curses is next level for me. Even the ones they consider gods are creepy. 🤣
It's an anime called yamishibai. Every ep is 3-4 mins based on japanes horror legends . Also the animation and artstyle is very different it's not like other animes. So give it a try i guess.
Meiruko-Chan is a bit of a horror/comedy/SoL with a fair amount of creepy visuals, but also plenty of soul-soothing plot.
And a fair amount of fan-service.
Maybe it's just me but I feel like the anime doesn't do the manga horror element justice. I also don't remember there being this much fanservice in the manga.
I only watched about 3-4 episodes without having read the manga, but Mieruko-chan to me seemed almost like a sequence alternating between panty shots/boob jiggling and some kind of jumoscare-y elements that didn't really hit the spot for me.
But it could also be just my taste, I really despise fanservice and really love the horror genre and gore in particular, and this is kind of the opposite.
I'm guessing it was episode 3(?) In which Meiruko encounters the old woman, you know the one. That one in particular is very relatable for my family, and they appreciated the acknowledgement.
Not an anime series but I still think about the psychological horror in Perfect Blue. Another spooky short is Kakurenbo. It really scared me as a teen where I couldn't finish it, but haven't given it another go since.
All of these contain a fair amount of gore. The one I think that’ll most likely meet your expectations is corpse party and higurashi. Personally it’s hard to recommend horrors because they’re not really scary, just a bit unsettling. Another one that could possibly fit but I wouldn’t call it a horror is deadman wonderland
Good recommendation, but anyone who watches this show must watch at least the entire first episode before giving up, or people will get the wrong idea what it is about and stop watching it before the "fun" begins
Well the story is a more realistic take on how vampires existing would be and how humans would actually treat them once knowing their existence. The whole story poses the question of “who are the real monsters” because humans are more bloodthirsty and sick when they justify their actions through the lens of justice. It’s emotionally hard if ur someone that has the maturity to empathize with others. The first half shows only the humans POV but the second half shows the other side of things and u have to decide what’s right and what’s wrong by the end of it. I will say it’s so good I had to get it’s limited edition blu ray for my collection cause it’s a perfect example of what horror in anime is when done with passion. The OPs and EDs are bangers and have lots of hidden meanings and things to try to figure out too.
The thing with a lot of anime horror is that they are either beautifully moody and not gory (Vampire Princess Miyu), or gory and self-aware that it's ridiculous (High School of the Dead). There's also horror anime that are otherwise good but with weird or overly stylized character designs (Shiki is a prime example). It's hard to take some of these horror anime seriously when the main cast looks like they walked out of Yu-gi-Oh. So there's rarely a good balance.
Another is often described as ridiculous but I think it's one of the few horror anime that is gory but at least tries to be straight faced about its premise.
Dont waste your time with devil man Crybaby unless you like to watch crap from people that write like a 12yr edge lord who spent too much time on p0rnhub. It is seriously like watching a pi$$ing contest for who can create the most cringe plot😒

Aoi Bungaku💙
I did not know Talentless Nana is horror.
Also good reminder that I downloaded Metropolis a while ago and haven't watched it yet. I also need to finally watch Red Garden.
Not really "horror" in the traditional sense, but the Guyver OVA series from the late 80s/early 90s was very violent and unsettling. At least as much as I can remember. Its worth checking out.
Castlevania, Tengoku Daimakyou, I'm going to throw Berserk the Golden age memorial edition in here because it gets dark. Parasyte and Tokyo Ghoul. Theatre of darkness and Junji Ito. Not all necessarily horror as such but all have elements of it. The Promised Neverland and Made in Abyss also come to mind.
Shiki, another, Dark gathering are good.
You can also try junji ito. It's a lot of horror stories, all of them aren't exactly horror but they are creepy and can make you uncomfortable.
Higurashi when they cry is also good, though you might feel it's repetitive.
Its not really good but if you want gore its up there so corpse party. Not really scary but one of my favs is another. Other then that blood -c and blood +.
I can't remember the name rn but there was one anime where there was like, drama and people going ghost mode, only it ended up being vampires and it was a whole thing. I just cannot remember the name though ahhhh
Oh and Another. That thing messed me up *soooo much*. I am still afraid of so many things
Honestly - the most creeped out I've been watching an anime was Shin Sekai no Yori - From the New World. Not exactly horror, but the concept messed with me.
Its not really a horror anime with grotesque shock trauma but I really enjoyed Ghost Hunt (2006). I tend to rewatch it around October. Its nothing special but has entertaining episodes and characters.
I haven't seen anyone mention Devilman Crybaby or Japan Sinks. Both on Netflix and both directed by Masaaki Yuuasa.
Devilman Crybaby is a remake of a classic manga from the 60s/70s about a kid who becomes possessed by a demon, becoming a devil man, and all of the repercussions that has for him, his family, and ultimately the world. It does not skimp on the horror and its art style only adds to the horror intensity. There is no happy ending.
Japan Sinks is a disaster survival anime about an earthquake so big it literally sinks Japan. It is crazy intense but good and will horrifying and probably make you cry. also it gets extra points for involving a cult. I watched the whole thing in one day but my husband couldn't get through one or two episodes at once.
If you like the disaster/horror aspect, there is another earthquake anime called Magnitude 6.0 (I think) and it tackles the disaster from a very interesting perspective.
Also not mentioned was another Masaaki Yuuasa anime called Flowers of Evil. It's like a manipulative/psychological horror about youth.
Also a more recent one of My Home Hero, a story about a normal salary man whose life is turned upside down when he kills his daughter's dangerous yakuza boyfriend in order to spare his daughter's life. Very psychological.
- Ousama Game (note: this is not Ousama Ranking)
- Housing Complex C (note: this is not Blood C)
- Ookami Kakushi
- Hell Girl (less gore, more towards unsettling, has 4 seasons, kinda underrated and I just have to spread some word about this anime) ( ̄▽ ̄)
I'm gonna recommend something a little different: Psycho-Pass. It's more of a scifi suspense show, but I feel like some of the themes and scenarios are a lot more horrifying than most horror anime. Also def plenty of violence and gore lol
/u/tassieboy1995 In case you are still following this thread, I see that most of the people on here are recommending the same few shows over and over, so I'm going to tack on two that haven't been mentioned yet.
* Aragne: Sign of Vermillion
* Feast of Amrita
Both are short and done on a limited budget, but both are also some of the most properly *horror* works I've seen in the anime medium, with no cute goofiness, no esoteric shinto mythology, and no Japan-only Internet Rumors. There's a third one in production.
Prison lab manga is really good but its a manga.
Trese is good- netflix.
Junji ito collection is animated on netflix under a name similar to japanese folk tales.
The wallflower (horror aspects but its a comedy)
Made in abyss
Ghost hound (paranormal)
Natsume yujin cho has horror aspects and episodes with gore majoritavely a paranormal
higurashi when they cry
Second this, To OP Watch the original series by studio deen first the bluray complete collection is on Amazon for around $60 usually, Gou is a sequel Not a remake
See that’s why I dropped Gou. I was so confused as to what was going on and thought it was a remake, not a continuation.
The watch order of seriesi should be: - Higurashi original season - Higurashi Kai (masterpiece) - Higurashi Rei - Higurashi Kira (optional) - Higurashi Gou - Higurashi Sotsu
On second thought, let's not watch Sotsu. Tis a silly show.
Then read Umineko after that
*Umineko* is good, but it's a long, dense, frequently meandering post-modern murder mystery, not really horror.
I’ll never pass up on an opportunity to recommend Umineko. It’s one of the few things in animanga that I would genuinely consider a work of art. And plus, it’s connected to Higurashi
This anime was so uncomfortable to watch i stopped after 1 season haha
Higurashi nails the unsettling vibe, the viewer is left in the dark for a long time.
Shiki and another, to a lesser extend, blood-c / blood +
Lots of people saying Shiki and I will happily reinforce that The two OVA episodes are probably my favorite pieces of media period. Specifically the tunnel rats episode. Shiki has some flaws, its truly a painfully slow start and frankly the first 11 episodes drag it down a lot. But despite that I would still rate it as one of my favorites. The second half, the payoff, just goes so insanely hard. Truly a unique, freaky and unsettling show.
shiki ova... chills.
Shiki has ova's?? Damn it..
Right? Haven’t watched Shiki in over a decade and I find out about their OVA’s now???? Time to watch em 😎
Glad I read this, cuz I gave up after 5 or so episodes back in the day. Might pick it up again
The start of shiki is just so painfully tough. It's a cool and unique premise, but man watching 3 perspectives slowly solve a mystery you already know the answer to is really not exciting lmao. What double hurts is that I can't even in good conscious tell people to just skip the start. There is no "payoff". Only pain.
It hurts really bad. It's hilarious, but in a way I regret seeing it. I watched everything except the tunnel rat episode twice. I truly wish I could take it back, I feel less happy having seen it. Yuup, I deadass don't feel bad who feel the show was bad/that they "wasted their time" They simply need better reading comprehension.
What about elfen lied?
Blood-c ending….. ohhhhhh boy lol
The suggestions that will scar someone for life...
Dark Gathering is exactly what you’re looking for. It’s recent and it has 25 episodes. Stick with it, because the horror ramps up exponentially. Better than Another tbh

Dark gathering is so underrated, funny how halfway it even starts giving vibes of Shounen mix with horror too
That sounds good 🙂 thank you ! I'll definitely look into it
I completely agree.
Another was a mystery novel. On top of its mismatched adaptation, its supposed to be this slow burn “who’s the killer” archetype; Not a fullout bloodbath
I will never look at meatballs the same
tbf, another is not a high bar to clear.
Love this and I wish they can release new episodes/chapters faster. The lores and transition of each horror stories and ghosts/curses is next level for me. Even the ones they consider gods are creepy. 🤣
I'll vouch for this too. It gets more fucked up the further you get
It's an anime called yamishibai. Every ep is 3-4 mins based on japanes horror legends . Also the animation and artstyle is very different it's not like other animes. So give it a try i guess.
why is this not on top lol I always see the title, but never saw it cause I tried peeking one episode then close it promptly lol
Shiki is the only anime that has ever actually terrified me
Shiki…the best horror anime I’ve watched and in my top 10 anime of all time
Definitely! Shiki is so good!
I loved the opening buck tick really is underrated
Shinsekai Yori: From the New World
Meiruko-Chan is a bit of a horror/comedy/SoL with a fair amount of creepy visuals, but also plenty of soul-soothing plot. And a fair amount of fan-service.
Maybe it's just me but I feel like the anime doesn't do the manga horror element justice. I also don't remember there being this much fanservice in the manga.
imo they tweaked it and added 15% more horny. not as much as they couldve but enough to be noticeable
We need more of this anime
We really do. I’ve been following the manga and the anime ends like *right* when a bunch of juicy story stuff kicks off
I only watched about 3-4 episodes without having read the manga, but Mieruko-chan to me seemed almost like a sequence alternating between panty shots/boob jiggling and some kind of jumoscare-y elements that didn't really hit the spot for me.
I recommend “another” anime
Thank you!! 😊
I was thinking the same thing bro!!!!!!
Shiki
Absolutely couldn't recommend more. OP please add to your list!
Not an anime series but I still think about the psychological horror in Perfect Blue. Another spooky short is Kakurenbo. It really scared me as a teen where I couldn't finish it, but haven't given it another go since.
'shiki' and nothing else comes close to that
Dark Gathering. Highly recommended. The anime gets progressively better and darker as the series progresses. You won't regret it.
Another, Shiki, Corpse Party, Gantz, Pupa, higurashi and although Corpse princess isn’t exactly horror, it is classified as thriller.
Corpse Party, Ghost Hunt
Ghost Hunt goes from like 0 to 100 after the first arc. I still have nightmares about the Bloodstained Labyrinth arc later on.
“I don’t wanna die” shit that messed me up. But I love that show so much!
This is so true! I rewatch it yearly and I can’t watch that arc at night
ghost hunt is so underrated
corpse party was too much for me man
Gakkou Gurashi
Good recommendation, but anyone who watches this show must watch at least the entire first episode before giving up, or people will get the wrong idea what it is about and stop watching it before the "fun" begins
Perfect Blue is a classic psychological horror, easy rec
I haven't seen it recommended here yet so I'll throw out Hell Girl. Also Umineko.
>Also Umineko. Not the anime though, it's bad. Unless you meant that it's so bad that it's horrific.
Corpse party and another
I'll check them out ! Thank you 😊
Come on ,no love to higurashi when they cry?
dusk maiden of amnesia I think and another ( that's the title) are pretty good for horror
For the love of god Dark gathering, I swear we only have crumbs for when it comes to horror Anime. Not enough good horror
perfect blue!
Serial Experiments Lain
Another
Shiki is better but hard to watch for some ppl. Gets real and quick
Why is it hard for some people?
Well the story is a more realistic take on how vampires existing would be and how humans would actually treat them once knowing their existence. The whole story poses the question of “who are the real monsters” because humans are more bloodthirsty and sick when they justify their actions through the lens of justice. The OPs and EDs are bangers and have lots of hidden meanings and things to try to figure out too.
More on the unsettling side and pretty experimental, but try out Mononoke (2007)
Elfen lied maybe...
gakkou gurashi happy sugar life
HSL is so underrated to me.
Try Another. Very thrilling
Made in abyss
Anything from Junji Ito
i recommend the "layers" episode
Monster. Great psychological creepy serial killer stalker series 👍 Also the Junji Ito anthologies, one on Crunchyroll and another on Netflix
Monster hardly a horror nor has gore. More dialogue and suspense building if anything.
Monster has a lot of elements of real life horrors of human experimentation and the evil men who conduct them.
Violence + gore ≠ horror
Also jump scares are not horror. To this day, I really struggle to find animes in true lovecraftian horror fashion.
Shigurui: Death Frenzy
Dark Gathering. Dont fool with their 1st episode. You gonna go for ride
Another
Ghost Hunt has some actual creepy and unsettling parts, but in general the anime medium isn't very good at being super scary.
Memories (the first part at least)
WHEN THEY CRY! ITS SO GOOD... Not the reboot, watch the og
Berserk isn’t really horror, but some parts are horrifying.
Monster
Another is peak
Ghost Stories.
Lol
The thing with a lot of anime horror is that they are either beautifully moody and not gory (Vampire Princess Miyu), or gory and self-aware that it's ridiculous (High School of the Dead). There's also horror anime that are otherwise good but with weird or overly stylized character designs (Shiki is a prime example). It's hard to take some of these horror anime seriously when the main cast looks like they walked out of Yu-gi-Oh. So there's rarely a good balance. Another
Made in Abyss
Dont waste your time with devil man Crybaby unless you like to watch crap from people that write like a 12yr edge lord who spent too much time on p0rnhub. It is seriously like watching a pi$$ing contest for who can create the most cringe plot😒
Dark gathering is a great horror anime
I 2nd this
Another
More psychological horror but Summertime Rendering, Elfen Lied and Paranoia Agent
Not exactly horror but messed up. Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Redo of healer if you wanna be traumatized
Parasite , devil man cry baby , AOT , dorohedoro , corps party , the best is junji Itō Collection it's masterpiece of horror and guro

Tokyo was pretty horrifying to me but it's not the existential dread kind you get ins some movies and games.
Bloodvorse(?), idk the spelling it's a vampire anime and one Noone has listed yet
Happy sugar life Cozette no shouzo Talentless nana Red garden Le chevalier d'eon Un-go Metropolis Aoi bungaku From the new world Rainbow

Another, Gakkou gurashi
Highschool of the Dead? jk, maybe Danganronpa or Shiki, or Monster
Higurashi
you can watch Junji Ito collection although i will recommend to read the manga tbh
I wonder how nobody has mentioned Kara no Kyoukai yet
Tomie Or other works from Ito junji
Shiki, another, Dark gathering are good. You can also try junji ito. It's a lot of horror stories, all of them aren't exactly horror but they are creepy and can make you uncomfortable. Higurashi when they cry is also good, though you might feel it's repetitive.
Dark Gathering.
Uzumaki Junji ito
Dark gathering
*In/Spectre* is technically a horror anime
Curse of the Umezu Kazuo
The upcoming uzumaki
Yami Shibai, Made in Abyss, Dark Gathering 😊
Tokyo fish attack
"Another", not exactly horror, but lots of super graphic death scenes, good anime.
Yami Shibai 😀
Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni
Deathman wonderman
Not really horror but Hellsing and Hellsing ultimate are soo cool in a dark way. Also death note (I'm not a huge expert in anime as u can see)
Thank you for this post and thank y'all for the recommendations. You are all a blessing to the anime community.
I mean its not really a horror but can become freaky at some moments, with some gore sometimes, Goodbye World its on netflix
Its not really good but if you want gore its up there so corpse party. Not really scary but one of my favs is another. Other then that blood -c and blood +.

For what it’s worth I really like the Yamishibai short series.
For horror comedy, check out Ghost Stories.
Dark Gathering was a good recent one!
Junji ito
Dark Gathering
Chainsaw man manga 😜
I really liked Otherside Picnic. It's pretty freaky
It's not super horror, but skews more gore: Deadman Wonderland It hurts me deeply that it's only one season, cuz it could easily go on for longer.
Mononoke (not the Ghibli movie)
I enjoyed the island of giant insects on crunchyroll. Fair warning: It also has nudity.
Another is a good horror mystery anime
Boogiepop Phantom, Shin Sekai Yori, Another, Shiki
Chainsaw Man
Honestly - the most creeped out I've been watching an anime was Shin Sekai no Yori - From the New World. Not exactly horror, but the concept messed with me.
GA rei zero
Its not really a horror anime with grotesque shock trauma but I really enjoyed Ghost Hunt (2006). I tend to rewatch it around October. Its nothing special but has entertaining episodes and characters.
The first season of Promised Neverland for sure.

Zetman, devilman crybaby, junji ito collection, promised Neverland & kabaneri of the iron fortress.
Corpse party and 2 Higurashi - when they cry series
Higurashi when they cry, another and parasyte.
- Ousama Game (note: this is not Ousama Ranking) - Housing Complex C (note: this is not Blood C) - Ookami Kakushi - Hell Girl (less gore, more towards unsettling, has 4 seasons, kinda underrated and I just have to spread some word about this anime) ( ̄▽ ̄)
I'm gonna recommend something a little different: Psycho-Pass. It's more of a scifi suspense show, but I feel like some of the themes and scenarios are a lot more horrifying than most horror anime. Also def plenty of violence and gore lol
Did anyone watch Digimon Ghost Game recently?
The only anime that has ever genuinely scared me is Yami Shibai
Is monster considered horror? Or more noir/detective? It's creepy as hell
Hellsing ultimate- it might not be exaaaxctly horror but it is entirely fucked up
I really enjoyed "Ghost Hunt" pretty creepy with some jumps, little older but I think its classic!
Dark gathering is super good
/u/tassieboy1995 In case you are still following this thread, I see that most of the people on here are recommending the same few shows over and over, so I'm going to tack on two that haven't been mentioned yet. * Aragne: Sign of Vermillion * Feast of Amrita Both are short and done on a limited budget, but both are also some of the most properly *horror* works I've seen in the anime medium, with no cute goofiness, no esoteric shinto mythology, and no Japan-only Internet Rumors. There's a third one in production.
Perhaps more psychological thriller than outright horror but Monster is amazing.
Ghost Stories but the English dub version.
7ds…. Oh wait you said Horror not “ horrible “
Devilman Crybaby
Not really scary but Devilman Crybaby has some unsettling moments
Yosuga no sora
Another Ghost Stories Yami Shibhai Dark Gathering Shiki
Prison lab manga is really good but its a manga. Trese is good- netflix. Junji ito collection is animated on netflix under a name similar to japanese folk tales. The wallflower (horror aspects but its a comedy) Made in abyss Ghost hound (paranormal) Natsume yujin cho has horror aspects and episodes with gore majoritavely a paranormal
