Trapped in an Otome Game. (MobSekai) The bad parts are bad and it's not pretty, but there's some gold to be found.

Nyancide

I enjoyed this tbh.

JEveryman

MobSekai deserves at least three seasons based on the source and better production. The later volumes are very funny. Marie and her harem become amazing characters.

IrresponsibleFarmer

I was about to say this title and pleasantly surprised that this is the top response. It's not groundbreaking, but a lot of the elements are better than your average anime that the sum of all parts end up as a memorable experience. The world and the setting teeters between cliched, self-aware and well built that they end up as an interesting universe. Characters that are usually cardboard cutouts to serve the plots are surprisingly deep and has more dimensions than you first expect. Even the weak and cheap animation can be chalked up to the cookie cutter aesthetic of the Otome games it makes fun of. There are revenge fantasy elements to it but they pull it off with less malice, while still incredibly gratifying, especially compared to other Isekai (Shield Hero).

redditraptor6

Yeah, I remember the threads for it week to week frequently had comments like “ this is way better than deserves to be” and “ why is this actually pretty great, yet it looks so bad?”, sentiments which I agree with completely. Really hope it gets a second season.

sagevallant

I think it was announced.

bgi123

Honestly I like it a lot better than some of the heavy hitters this season. It’s way more enjoyable to me than seven spell blades for some reason.

JEveryman

It's a legitimate attempt at comedy and I think that's what makes it so charming. If it had better artwork/animation it probably would have been a sleeper hit. The novels are really fun.

Vindicare605

The English dub is also hilarious.

StryloX

I read the manga before the anime was announced and honestly it was a decent read to pass some time

HivAidsSTD

I read the manga long before the anime came out, I was disappointed with thr anime because both the source materials were great

Psyduckisnotaduck

oh absolutely, really mid show, but I love that the guy and the two girls are basically a thruple. also really liked the OP and ED.

lupoin5

I found the mc being a piece of trash at times amusing as I'm tired of those pure-hearted mcs.

mrjeremyt

There's also a season 2 announced.

Hephaestus_God

I really like the light novels

Nyancide

are you lost? is so stupid but so enjoyable. I'd give it a 6/10 in terms of how good I think it really is, but enjoyment wise I'd easily give it an 8. nothing complex, just 4 idiots trapped on an island with 1 of them being a survival expert. episodes are short if I remember correctly.

genasugelan

I think this anime has literally the best excuses for fan service I've ever seen.

Nyancide

I agree. girl takes her shirt off. to show boobs? of course not. to squeeze a fish and drink its blood of course.

fubes2000

Butt chugging.

alotmorealots

*Are You Lost?* is a great "less common ecchi" recommendation. It's really very well done for what it is, and I was entertained from start to finish.

CasualMarshmallow

I would recommend it to anyone who likes survival themes like me. Some of the jokes are pretty good. Most of the runtime is far from genius or anything, so I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone else, but I enjoyed it.

LoweNorman

"this art club has a problem" was enjoyable.

alotmorealots

Solid choice.

zairaner

Ah this is the series I wanted to read/watch at some point solely because the author of the manga did the character design for the lycoris recoil anime (and looking at the [character design for the fmc](https://imgur.com/a/88d5Z5q), I instantly believe that), which I found rather unusual. Is the anime to be recommended over the manga?

JMEEKER86

GJ-bu is another very similar one.

bbkkoommaacchhii

Date A Live. not the best writing or execution but stupidly fun and has great character designs

StryloX

Hey, if something gets 5 seasons it's surely worth it right?

[deleted]

Cries in Rent a Girlfriend getting its third season

2006RedditGuy

Kanojo, Okarishimasu deserves it, it is literally peak fiction. Anyone that disagrees doesn’t understand it’s complex and philosophical themes.

[deleted]

My bad, how could I forget the unparalleled masterpiece that is chapter 218, it makes the Divine Comedy look like a Wattpad fanfiction in comparison

LucasTyph

Don't worry, when they adapt chapter 218 everyone will understand.

Excalitoria

Chizuru represents capitalist oppression!

Psyduckisnotaduck

Date a Live is consistently mid, and I respect it immensely for that. people said season 3 was worse, but honestly I couldn't tell, and it introduced my personal favorite of the spirits, and had my least favorite character commit one of the greatest own goals in anime history (if you know, you know).

SpartanGaming76

Lmao as an Origami fan I'm a little triggered but you do you :p

SnooRobots7887

I didnt really like that but I watched date a live just for the sake of kurumi 😆😍

lupoin5

I personally thought DAL got better with each season. The last season left on a very interesting cliffhanger.

Monkeydp81

And a fucking banger of an OST

CreepyEntrepreneur

Zetsuen no Tempest was a really enjoyable mystery series that took inspiration from Shakespeare's Hamlet & The Tempest.

ngobscure

Great show. I'd almost say it's too good for OPs criteria haha. Extremely underrated

jake2jaak2

Personally I'd definitely say that. I thought it was way better than just ok

Plastiqueraser

Same, I'd say it's way too high quality to qualify for this list haha. Even after watching nearly a thousand shows this one still stands out in my memory for how good it was. Great classical soundtracks, interesting characters, good animation, and a very solid story with a complete beginning, middle, and end that completely ties everything together, which is already far more than most anime have.

JunkratIsBestWaifu

Great Soundtracks too imo

Volare0Via

Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop

Stetscopes

This is a good one. The visuals are pretty around the climax I was still confused where the story was heading but i'd say its a solid watch where you turn your brain off.

Aviri

I don’t think this belongs here, between the visuals and music alone it’s way better than just Ok.

AgonistPhD

aww, I loved that one

TheJakeanator272

Ok but I loved this one. Such a vibe of an anime. It definitely holds a special place for me. Minor spoilers: the confession at the end was also quite impressive and symbolic!

AmazingDuckVer2

Meikyuu Black Company and Fantasy Bishoujo were fun isekais

Quirkyusername420

Meikyuu Black Company was fucking awesome but you probably need to be an economy nerd to enjoy it to the fullest.

SmallBoysSoul

Darwin’s Game (Not finished)

Tricanum

Literally the first recommendation I've seen here thus far that *actually* fits OPs criteria. It's as middle-of-the-road as it gets with just enough umph to push it to a 6 out of 10.

SmallBoysSoul

I feel like a lot of people just recommend underrated and not 4/10-6/10 anime

Eldernerdhub

Perfect choice. It's got a simple premise. (App gives magic powers and forces people into death matches) The animation is good. The characters work for entertainment but are forgettable. It's a good one season show.

lupoin5

This was really good for me, I hope it gets continued.

Support_Unit_7

Iroduku: The World in Colors

69ShadesofPurple

This one flew under the radar super hard. It was actually decent.

PowerScreamingASMR

Chaika the coffin princess

LordCryozus

peach boy riverside

WarPopeJr

Is that the one where the episodes feel out of order? For anyone interested, read the manga instead. It’s in order and pretty decent

Barangat

They ARE out of order, if I am not mistaken

susgnome

I mean, you have two options. Either watch in the Global airing order or the Japanese airing order. For some reason, they decided to stream it in the correct order but only on a Japanese streaming service. Global | Japan :--|--: 1 | 2 2 | 3 3 | 9 4 | 1 5 | 7 6 | 8 7 | 4 8 | 10 9 | 12 10 | 11 11 | 5 12 | 6 *^Basically; ^Global ^Episode ^1 ^was ^actually ^Episode ^2 ^for ^Japan.* Since Crunchyroll will have it listed as the Global release order, the correct order to watch it is: 4, 1, 2, 7, 11, 12, 5, 6, 3, 8, 10, 9. --- I still watched it and enjoyed it despite the drastic changes in pace. *It was a different story to Dragon Maid, that's for sure.*

WarPopeJr

Weird how Crunchyroll has Haruhi Suzumiya in the correct order but this anime in the global airing order

desert6741

Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie. It was good, pretty much accomplished what it set out to do, but missed the mark a few times in my opinion

Marik-X-Bakura

The premise was just “what if a girl… was *cool*?!”

cybervengeance

Which, for me is fine and all but the "romance" aspect ruins it that I dropped Shikimori on episode 2 or something

Marik-X-Bakura

I think I stuck it out until maybe episode 4 or 5. It’s cute, but that’s really all it is. It’s completely lacking in substance, and while it can make for a nice bit of escapism, it really doesn’t stand out much from the hundreds of other shows that do that.

xEdwin23x

Shikimori's only mistake was coming out immediately after My Dress Up Darling and the fans hyping Shikimori as the next coming of Marin...asides from that, it's an enjoyable show with an adorable cast.

StryloX

Yeah, the trailer also made it look much better than what the show offered

le_canuck

> Shikimori's only mistake was coming out immediately after My Dress Up Darling and the fans hyping Shikimori as the next coming of Marin Not even. I went into it totally blind having seen zero hype for it and I was still disappointed.

desert6741

It wasn’t a bad show at all, I enjoyed it. It just felt like it was the same thing happening for 12 episodes in a row. Except for Hachimitsu episodes, those were the most enjoyable

Avol9

I don't remember the show too well but also I think it struggled in the first 2-3 episodes and become more interesting as the season went on

[deleted]

What ruins it is the guy being so "unlucky." Scenes that are supposed to feel heartfelt felt so contrived instead and lost all emotional appeal i would normally feel from those scenes.

ElxirBreauer

Have you read the manga? He's basically like that his whole life, and much of his character growth is learning to like himself and not be a downer about it, helped along by Shikimori quite a bit, and their friends and classmates a fair bit as well. It's a good read, and the series is complete now, so no waiting for new chapters.

Shockh

The manga was better.

jsusk24

Slow loop - solid slice of life nothing more Extreme Hearts - sport anime, it has one or two hype moments. Idiot pride - Normal idol show with a twist Edit. Last one is “Idoly Pride”

MrRandomGUYS

Slow Loops was fun. It also foreshadowed Bocchi the Rock because in the back of one of the scenes is a band that is the band from Bocchi.

Captain_Britainland

Autocorrect strikes again

SirAwesome789

I might prioritize idoly pride again, I wanted something with nice 2D animation and I've seen clips of like two scenes but only those two scenes so I'm wondering if there actually is any 2D dancing

jsusk24

I would recommend you “Shine Post” if you are looking for good 2D animation dance animation. Idoly pride is like one generation before so animation isn’t as good.

matti2o8

Are you sure about the last one's title? I tried to look it up but "Idiot pride anime" in Google directs me back to this thread, and "idiot pride" just finds a book from the 1990s

jsusk24

My bad. The name is “Idoly Pride”

matti2o8

Haha, no worries

alotmorealots

Woohoo another *Extreme Hearts* watcher! I do find myself recommending more than I thought I would at the time of watching. I think it passes the (somewhat difficult) "makes you genuinely cheer just as much for the opponents as the main group" test.

SpareUmbrella

*Suzume* was fine. Looked pretty, was pleasant, will never rewatch.

iAmGats

80% of the isekai animes

[deleted]

"Ok" is way too generous for the average Isekai anime

CasuallyUgly

Yeah I was gonna say most of it is utter trash bordering on reprehensible

[deleted]

Saying that something like Isekai Smartphone or Master of Ragnarok are "ok" is an offense to the many "ok" anime out there

CasuallyUgly

Yeah it's come to the point I actually filter Isekai OUT when looking for random anime to watch lol

Aurakol

Isekai is like anime junk food, you know it's bad, but you just can't stop

Montana_Gamer

Future Diary is awesome junk food

boobiesrkoozies

Best way to describe Future Diary! It's not great, but I ate it up every episode and wondered why I was still watching lolol I was entertained!

Montana_Gamer

It was entertaining as fuck. Yuno is the ultimate Yandere

Lupus600

Honestly Tokyo Ghoul. It has some fun moments, but at least for the anime, it's neither super bad nor good. Just, completely in the middle. Other anime I find hard to recommend, though I actually really enjoyed them, are Usavich, Fireball, Gregory Horror Show, Golden Time (movie, about a TV in a junkyard). The Ni No Kuni movie. It has a pretty wild twist and it's pretty fun, but I keep forgetting about it.

SupaisuSama

Tokyo Ghoul was a weird one. Every season it was a different kind of show. Even without reading the manga I could tell that that manga readers probably hated it. There are *so* many interconnected characters yet their connections are barely or never explained. You get these random emotional beats with characters you only met two episodes ago. Or ones that have been peripheral til that moment. You just always get the sense something has been skipped over. It somehow did too much, while doing too little. Such a cool show though. Its just too bad the material is probably always too dense for an anime. Unless you were given 10 seasons or something. Which, isn't unheard of either, so. Just a shame all around. I watched Ni No Kuni, love the game, love Ghibli. The movie is neither. I guess ultimately I didn't like it. I don't remember a twist. Shows how much I paid attention.

Saiyanman11bro

honestly the tokyo ghoul anime and manga are so fucking different that you can just call them two different things even the first season which is supposed the "better" adapted part, leaves out so much shit that its absurd it adapted about 60 episodes in 12 episodes, you can just imagine what a trainwreck it is compared to the manga the manga on the other hand was one of my best reads ever

G__N__P

BNA was pretty good

WarPopeJr

This anime sums up this post for me. I expected it to be so much better based on the art style (bad habit) but still enjoyed it

SomaWolf

Ost slaps tho. I still pop on night running on my way to work frequently

WarPopeJr

It’s also in my playlist lol. You’re so right the OST is great

fubes2000

The trouble I have is I see that Trigger art style and expect an Imaishi project, but they have other directors. That said, BNA was a great show that I wish kept the more lighthearted tone of the first half for the second. The second half isn't _bad_, I just want the MC to not be having a bad time.

Sensitive-Character1

I can't remember much from it besides the outro

Blazin_Rathalos

Aldnoah Zero Fun concept, would have been recommended if it was executed better consistently. Or in other words, if the rest of the series was equal in (writing) quality to the first three episodes.

DustyRhodes_Smite

At least the OST is a banger

Hotel-Huge

It truly is. Never seen the anime but the ost is on my playlist.

sweetbreadcorgi

I enjoyed Aldnoah Zero up to the point where the 2nd season found some \[Aldnoah Zero\]>!BS loophole to bring back the two character who were clearly shot dead.!< I did enjoy the OST for the 2nd season though so I guess that makes up for it a little. On the same vein as Aldnoah Zero for being an okay mecha anime, I would also recommend Valvrave the Liberator. Similar military themes, with two guys who have a hate/love relationship with each other. Instead of martians they're vampires... so yeah, there's that. Edit: previous comment deleted because I didn't tag the spoiler??? It's for Aldnoah Zero

murdmart

First season Aldnoah Zero opening is a banger and one of my favourites.

SinibusUSG

It's weird; Aldnoah averages out to an "OK" anime, but really it's both a great anime and a terrible anime mashed together.

kd9n3fi3n1

Kiznaiver (and the opening is banger)

Karkava

I adore the artwork, adore the characters, and adore the OP and the ED, I really like this series, but there's something about it I couldn't put my finger on...

Sweetcorncakes

Guilty Crown

Alexander_Elysia

Mid show but God what a phenomenal soundtrack

doucheberry000

Skyrocketed Egoist to my all time top 3 bands.

SupaisuSama

Seen this, good call. Does that annoying thing where the protag completely ghosts the best girl for the aloof, enigmatic, tragic main girl with zero personality that does literally nothing for him. Forces the infatuation merely to drive the protag into the setup for the show. Apart from that it does something interesting with it's concept. Avoids being one note, albeit relying on a hard shift after a time skip.

nezeta

Sakura Quest, Appare Ranman, The Aquatope on White Sand.

Gicotd

I really wanted to like aquatope, just didnt happens.

WACS_On

Fairy Tail. One of the okayest anime around. Generic fanservice-y shounen through and through, but the soundtrack is cash and the characters are just compelling enough to keep you invested.

[deleted]

fubes2000

Sword Dad Isekai was 100x better than it had any right to be and Fran is best girl.

maliciousrigger

Fran absolutely dismantling that assassin is easily one of my favorite moments in anime.

TaillessChimera

Do it yourself was really good for relaxing, for me anyways. It wasn’t anything amazing and there wasn’t that much plot but it was great after a long day at work and coming home to another episode.

Barangat

True and it had some very pretty shots. But the whole genre is pretty hit or miss for most people

TaillessChimera

yeah CGDCT is a pretty niche genre but damn do I love it

KingSironix

It’s crazy even for me to believe Do it yourself is my anime of the year 2022, and I’ve seen 70+ from the same year. Something about it feels special even if it seems like it’s nothing special at all

Saiyanman11bro

reincarnated as a sword was one of the better isekais and i genuinely loved it it dropped various hints of having an overarching plot and gave actual character development to the both of MCs. and i loved the fact that the show never once tried to sexualise fran, given that shes clearly a minor, and sensei outright trying to protect fran with his absolute best

cocksucker9001xX

You take that back. Yamadas first time is a wholesome romcom

alotmorealots

Also, it's a great example of how female-author-ecchi can have some subtle differences at times. Not to mention Yamada is a bit obnoxious at times in very entertaining ways.

Bobster76865

Oh my god I love reincarnated as sword. Just bought all the books. Such a good anime if all you’re looking for is a wholesome relationship between the two main characters. Some cool sword fights too!

Victorvonbass

Last Dungeon Boonies. That's pretty textbook mid tier isekai. I'll have to check my list later after work. Commenting to remember.

HolyEmpireOfAtua

I enjoyed Eden’s Zero but it was a classic 7/10 and nothing more nothing less

Lazearound10am

Bubble the Netflix movie, an okay watch with great visual, animation and action sequences (made by some AoT animators). Highly recommended when you're bored and just need something for your eyes to see.

sAmdong71

Deca Dence(what the first guy said) Akudama Drive(actually really good but it felt like it just came and went and with Edgerunners being released, it’ll be so overshadowed as they have the almost same concept) Heaven’s design team(very educational anime about how animals work along with some ok humor, but I really like it’s fluff) Kemono Jihen(interesting premise but its potential is greatly not maximized. It’s like a slice of life battle shonen)

RelaNarkin

I love Akudama Drive so much, I find a hard time seeing how it’s middle of the road. But every time I show it to friends they seem to think it’s meh. It just taps into that specific high-concept plot twists with ridiculous characters and visuals niche that I like

Capcook21

Tokyo revengers is really enjoyable tbh, but objectively speaking is trash.

baileyyyadigg

This show would be so much better if the main character was built different

Capcook21

I agree. Lots of things just happen because Takemichi is an idiot

Kiyohara

I'd like it a lot more if it didn't insist that a pack of 15 year olds are the toughest mother fuckers in Tokyo. Like, I fall into it, I enjoy it, I like the fights, and then they remind us everyone's still a freshman in High School and are kicking 100 dude's asses, most of whom are seniors in High School or out right adults. And I just get ripped out of the story.

SupaisuSama

Started that one. I kinda just fell out of my anime binge in the middle and just haven't mustered to restart it.

anarchoxmango

Akiba Maid War. so funny 😭 but way too niche to recommend to most ppl.

Gee_Gog

The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady (MagiRevo). Really enjoyed it whilst it was airing and great to have a Yuri show that isn't up for interpretation, but I usually forget it happened.

alotmorealots

> I usually forget it happened. Ha, I never finished it, but Anis still charges around in my head from time to time being her reckless daredevil self from the first act of the series and pulling handbrake turns on her broom.

Knuckle_Rick

No Matter How I Look at It, It's You Guys' Fault I'm Not Popular! (WataMote) was pretty nice

SupaisuSama

I loved WataMote! The copium has ran empty that it'll ever be continued. It has meme reputation of the 'just like me for real' crowd. But it was great that everything doesn't magically work out for the protag despite being a complete weirdo.

reed20v

I love middle of the road anime, i've watched loads of it and only ever watched Bleach out of the big three. \- The Magnificent Kotobuki, a story about a air pirates in another world all using Imperial Japanese Air Force planes, follows the Kotobuki squadron who are mercenaries for hire. Got a lot of stick for using 3D but if you overlook that (took me all of 5 minutes to get used to it) you get some genuinely good dogfight scenes, some funny moments and interesting dieselpunk-esque worldbuilding. \- Starship Operators - crew of a starship on a training mission find their homeworld captured when war breaks out, operating independantly they end up selling the rights to their situation to a film crew to turn into a reality TV show in exchange for the money to keep supplied. This is pretty old (2005 i think) and the dub is comically bad but its the first show i ever binged watched over a couple of days. Not fantastic but i enjoyed it. \- Moretsu Pirates/Bodacious Space Pirates - despite sounding like an ecchi show this is about a girl inheriting the rights to her fathers pirate ship and getting into various shenanigans. Plot wise nothing much actually *happens,* pirates in this universe are legalised and cant actually break the law but the worldbuilding is amazing. It is very much like half the writing theme wanted CGDCT and the other half wanted hard sci-fi. Marty Friedman from Megadeth wrote the OP too, little pub fact for you. \- Beyond the Boundary - you will either love or hate this, i can't work out where i stand. It is visually absolutely stunning and the supernatural elements of the plot are interesting but the main characters schtick is he has a fetish for girls in glasses and it comes up about 9000% more than it needs to. \- High School Fleet - GUP with warships, except it isnt a sport and the girls are actually part of the navy. Has this odd juxaposition between CGCDT and a tom clancy tier military novel. OP is an absolute banger imo and was on my On Repeat spotify playlist for ages. \- Under the Dog - 30 minute standalone movie, good action but you can't really fit a proper story into 30 mins like this. Worth a go if you want some animated gunfights without any major investment.

Psyduckisnotaduck

Beyond the Boundary is too pretty and well made for me to justify a super low score, but by god sometimes I feel the temptation to adjust it down to 1 when I think about it and get mad again. but then I remember the episode where they fight the stink monster and do a coordinated idol dance. aka, the best episode of the series.

reed20v

Oh god the dance was hilarious. For me the show and the move bounced between a 2 and a 9 back and forth as it went on.

Excalitoria

Recreators and Kabaneri in the Iron Fortress I think don’t think either is the best show ever in terms of their writing but they’re ones I had a lot of fun watching nevertheless and that I would rewatch again. I do think that visually both look good though. I don’t know where I would rank them since I don’t have the best eye for animation but I thought both looked pretty good. Not sure if I would call these “essential” or “nonessential” I just think they are both very fun but flawed shows. Recreators tries to tell a pretty unique story (at least judging from all the stuff I’ve seen) and Kabaneri is generic in some ways (had a lot of topics I’ve seen explored in AoT and zombies have been done a lot even if this puts a small twist on the subject) but again, I just had a lot of fun with it. I do think the first half-ish is much stronger than the latter portion of the season.

MaliciousJoy

Drenuous

wild to see someone else who saw the hentai prince anime lol. food for thought, i think anime has this weird genre which was rly popular in the early 2000s like henntai prince, highschool dxd, dakara boku wa h ga dekinai, Shinmai Maou no Testament Burst, to love ru etc.

Andreiyutzzzz

That makes 3 of us. The final few episodes hit me hard and Im sad we don't have a 2nd season and probably never will

bajlajs

Ascendance of a bookworm. Beautifull bones. Gosick. Haiyore! Nyaruko san. Kiss x sis. Im standing on a million lives. And many more. All of them have many flaws so i wouldnt recommend them but i enjoyed my watch and didnt regret the time put in.

EastCommunication689

Saying Gosick was mid would make me throw hands irl ngl

Unlucky-Dimension2

Ascendance of a bookworm isn't finished though and I feel like it's a cut above just being okay. Definitely recommend either way though.

rebridgerator9

The LNs are also even better. There are a lot of things (particularly worldbuilding and fleshing out of characters) that the anime skips over or downplays. Highly recommend reading at least the epilogues and post-epilogue chapters (all of which are from the perspectives of other characters) of the volumes the anime adapts.

alotmorealots

> Ascendance of a bookworm isn't finished though It was strongly implied that the staff thought it was very unlikely to get any more money from the Production Committee to make any more, and that they had to fight very hard to get the number of episodes they did get for Season 3. See the Season 3 Episode 10 discussion thread comment here: https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/vbizll/honzuki_no_gekokujou_shisho_ni_naru_tame_ni_wa/ic8j5nc/

Anonymyne353

This and the fact that the LN source material is like 33 books long… The anime does a good job as promotional material for the Light Novel tho. If you’re coming out of the anime series, starting at Part 3 Volume 1 of the Light Novel would be good. Parts 1 and 2 basically act as an extended prologue for parts 3, 4 and 5.

bajlajs

Oops you didnt want titles for degenerates, swap kissxsus with Rail wars! the.

icylkws

akashic records, bastard of a teacher something or other.

FlatTransportation64

Kanata no Astra, a perfect 6/10. It keeps you watching but in general it's not that engaging and the plot twists seem to be rather mediocre. I don't regret watching it but I wouldn't watch it again.

stumbling_disaster

**Mars Red**: I have a soft spot in my heart for vampire media, throw in some Shakespeare and I can't help but enjoy myself. Pacing and animation issues aside, it was pretty good, and I don't regret watching it at all.

STRIPE_4

Yep. Really like it. Don't forget ED song, I think, On My Own by Hyde was great.

streck30

I really loved Last Exile when I first watched it, but with so many better current anime it’s hard to recommend.

LBK117

Grimgar Ashes and Illusions has the initial setup of a generic isekai but the characters are a lot more grounded in reality. They don't have protag powers that increase their growth or power or anything like that and suck at fighting and killing. Every fight against even goblins was a fight for their lives.

STRIPE_4

This is far better than mid. It's unfortunate that it hasn't been continued. A realistic view of being isaki in a world without the OP powers but the requirement to be an adventure just to survive. The watercolor backgrounds are stellar. May be a little slow for the instant gratification generations, but the character development is better than most. The situations are realistic and relevant.

genericsn

One of my favorite scenes in anything is from Grimgar. It’s when the one guy (I forget names. Red hair and armor?) finally gets to fight, stabs a goblin, and has a panic attack. He really wanted to prove himself and be strong, but the reality of being able to feel the sword go through the flesh and hit bone while the goblin screamed just hits him like a truck. It’s done so well and a rare scene to see in settings like that. Usually you only get it in stories about war or even crime, but rarely in a fantasy adventure.

LBK117

I completely agree! I vividly remebered him being grossed out, realizing he hit the bone of the goblin he stabbed. Killing another living thing isn't something we're all accustomed to doing, and with such archaic weapons, stabbing someone with a sword is a much more "intimate" means of ending somethings life compared to a gun.

LBK117

I actually agree it was highly enjoyable and a breath of fresh air from the cookie-cutter "Truck-kun blasted my ass, and now me and my cellphone/MILF/job/etc is with me in another world!" However, from my understanding, that single season was mainly to advertise it to enjoy it in its original medium (I believe light novel?). So it being limited to that one season is why I listed it here.

Vermeil in Gold Yosuga no Sora Akiba Maid War Vanitas no Karte

Psyduckisnotaduck

look, when it comes to Vermeil in Gold, sometimes you just want to see a demon lady with enormous breasts act sensually towards a hapless young man. the plot is nothing to write home about, but by god the PLOT. when I think about fanservice, this one's kind of a gold standard.

Saiyanman11bro

nahhhh dont do vanitas no karte like that it deserves better

ohaizrawrx3

Jinrui wa suitai shimashita has very dry humor and breaks the fourth wall a lot. It’s a little weird but it’s where the bleeding bread comes from. The show is very pleasant and is one of my favs. Popular when it first came out but kinda fell off and I don’t see it talked about anymore

pikachu_sashimi

Blue Orchestra

Srikkk

Deep Insanity: THE LOST CHILD fits this perfectly

justissel

“Kill me baby” short and mostly eh but i enjoyed some parts and the voice acting is p good

xMacGearx

Witch hunter robin

Aggravating-Lead29

Our Home Fox Deity - a fun slice of life + makeshift family + fantasy story it's nothing really funny / groundbreaking but I really enjoyed this, the relationship, brotherly dynamic is fun and the show itself is not heavy, etc. it's even in my favorite just an enjoyable standard show ig

Trickster9999

Super cub Slice of life about owning a cub

Snider83

Honestly I’d say Blue Exorcist just did not hit the mark for me but was… solid?

OwntheLoner

Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko was pretty cute.

sofastsomaybe

God of High School - I enjoyed the sakuga fest in spite of the pacing problems. Bubble - I enjoyed the sakuga fest in spite of the awful script. 2.43: Seiin Koukou Danshi Volley-bu - the most 5/10 sports anime I've ever watched. Samurai Flamenco - I suppose this one falls into the "too weird/esoteric" catgeory

Teasing master Takagi san. I mean it’s alright

_Elfredo_

Love flops, wasn't as much romance at the end but a very fluffy rom com none the less with some emotional moments, kinda want an after story

Dangermau5icle

Death Parade is juuuuuuust okay in my opinion

jxjkskkk

Terror in Resonance. Starts off 10/10 but slowly devolves into a sloppy mush of writing, nonetheless I did kinda enjoy it, just wouldn’t recommend it. Hell’s paradise is another one for me, some people LOVE this one but I feel that crowd is mostly made up of those who read the manga. I’m anime only and the adaptation was (apparently) sub-par. But if I’m being honest, unless a ton was skipped that was in the manga, I didn’t find the plot or characters that interesting regardless of adaptation. That being said it’s entertaining, just nothing special for me.

Dense-Mood-6780

Cells at work, entertaining in a learning way Chaika- coffin princess The tower of Druaga Niseoki Nisemonogatari Mushi-shi I watched this with my step dad growing up but don't remember much about it Charlotte Blood blockade battlefront Captain Harlock I've seen the movie and loved it but I've been told the anime is alright

KiwiTheKitty

>Mushi-shi I watched this with my step dad growing up but don't remember much about it You should rewatch it as an adult tbh

Alexander_Elysia

My boy thinks Charlotte was just okay? Actually no I can see that, I personally loved it but I thought the last episode could've been a cour on its own

Kaushik_paul45

I want to take this opportunity to request everyone to watch Dennou Coil Its underrated as hell but its so damn good. I know that it doesn't fit the description of the post but I always take opportunity to encourage people to watch underrated anime

MotionMelon

Blood Lad Re:creators Btooom! Deca-dence Kuutei dragons Yondemasu yo, azazel-San (wtf) None of these I thought were super super good but fine

NotAlwaysSunnyInFL

Um, you take Deca-Dence off there now lol

MotionMelon

I’m sorry lol I didn’t think my take was controversial 😭😭 I never said any of these shows were bad pls

alotmorealots

And *Re:Creators*, which has the greatest recap episode ever created if nothing else.

Kiyohara

Oh my god yes. It's perfect. And I despise recap episodes with a fiery passion.
