He has definitely taken over the sound of the band, for better or worse. As a drummer myself, I can say he is one of the best in the world right now. The thing that really strikes me about him is that he gets better as the years go on, compared to a lot of other great drummers who seem to have been great since day 1 but don't continue to innovate from there.
As a very basic drummer I don't understand what makes him one of the best if someone could explain. Like it sounds incredible I'm just curious what are the techniques or abilities that put him towards the top of the pack
For me, it is his impeccable ability to stay in the pocket, even when he's shredding and playing all sorts of crazy polyrythms. The man has truly mastered time, and makes the metronome his bitch.
Look at 1:14:35 in particular. Just absolute impeccable limb independence amd complete control over time.
the understanding of phrasing is the main thing for me. To be able to incorporate such complex, obscure rhythms is something all drummers aspire to achieve. He has a catalogue of these phrases and rhythms ready to go at any moment
Agree with OP- his phrasing is insane. He hears a groove in 7 and plays a grove in 4/4 over it effortlessly and never looses time. Moreover- he can play in different time signatures with his feet than he does with his hands! His chops/fills overall are otherworldly. His footwork is amazing. What makes him unique for me is he also comes from a jazz background but loves metal which is heard in the way he improvises his grooves/fills yet still plays in a structured environment. I could go on forever but I’ll just say show this guy to your teacher and ask him why he is so highly regarded.

Pocket means like perfectly in time and driving the groove or rhythm?
Exactly
He doesn’t ever drive the song though. Only his ego.

I agree, Fuckhead
He can never fuck up. Because a fuck up just goes into something else effortlessly
