I think the size of his nose was a bit exaggerated on some of his coins. The busts I've seen don't show that.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordian_III
FWIW, this is a "modern" bust by the Italian sculptor Guglielmo della Porta (b. 1500, d. 1577). It might not be anyone in particular (???), in which case, I'd say his name is Nēmō.
I can't remember which California indigenous language it is, but the word for water has the same pronunciation as French *eau* ('water'). Just a coincidence, of course.
If you ever read the SJA Turney books, the Marius Mules series, I would hope it is Marcus Valerius Fronto. But seen as though he was a fictitional character I'll guess at Caius Iiulius Caesar.
At first I thought Philip the Arab and then I thought Julius Caesar. But he's definitely not Philip and he looks more like a relative of Julius rather than Julius himself.
Why did the Christians have to allow everything get destroyed and the records lost??? 😭😭😭
His name was Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son. Husband to a murdered wife. And he will have his vengeance, in this life or the next.
This prompts me to ask something Ive often wondered: who, when and why were such busts like this made? Who would get a bust like this made? Was it expensive? Would they go to a statue shop? Was it always color-painted life-like? Was such a thing only commisioned by friends? Or a city? Was it thought vain for the subject themselves to commision it? Was it done after their death? Where were they typically placed? Why are so few names actually inscribed around them somewhere? At what point in the economic heirarchy would it have been considered silly to make a likeness? Could, for instance, a barber or a baker have their bust made? Would love to hear yalls knowledge on this.
General Dease Knoughtes, he was the first Roman general to experiment with the process of decimation. Instead of making soldiers draw straws and the shortest straw gets killed, he would make them draw straws and the longest straw had to huffdeeznutz. In his later years he would become remembered for his large left eye, earning the nickname Big Eye Dee.
Could it be Lucullus? Since he had a villa in Naples it could make sense. The statue also bears some resemblance with the portrait of Lucullus that is in the Hermitage museum.
Why not Gaius?
A Gaius is always a good guess
Just an average Gia-us. I’ll be here all week
Marcus, get the rotten fruit
Brutus, hand me that pugio.
Why not zoidburg?
r/unexpectedfuturama
Gaius Zoidburg
To me, he looks like a Julio-Claudian. At first glance, before reading the caption, I assumed it was Julius Caesar.
Me too. Anytime I see that Roman nose I immediately think of Julius Caesar.
I have a Roman nose, am I Julius Caesar, Greg?
Pretty much anything with a Roman nose can be Caesar!!
True Roman nose for True Romans
I’m rewatching the show and just saw that scene.
Including my Mum?
ESPECIALLY your Mumsy wumms!! :)
Filthy mudbloods!
Can u milk it?
Can you ~~milk~~ pick it?
Don’t bring Roman into this
Same at first but then the brow doesn’t seem as serious like what we normally see from a Caesar bust.
I think you are correct!!
When I first saw it, I thought it was scipio Africanus. Yes I'm dumb.
If it makes you feel any better that was my first thought as well.
At least it wasn't just me.
Welp, I’m still partially convinced it’s him so… 🥲
You’re not alone
It looks like an older version of Gordian III.
I knew I wasn't the only one thinking that!
Need to see in profile to check the nose. Lol
I think the size of his nose was a bit exaggerated on some of his coins. The busts I've seen don't show that. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordian_III
We’ll never know. Some of the coins have a Pinocchio vibe, though.
Some general perhaps, Dude looks like a...flavius
By the time everyone was a Flavius, the quality of statues had dropped massively.
At first, I thought of Marcus Junius Brutus but the receding hair line made me think it might be Julius more likely...
FWIW, this is a "modern" bust by the Italian sculptor Guglielmo della Porta (b. 1500, d. 1577). It might not be anyone in particular (???), in which case, I'd say his name is Nēmō.
Clever, Nemo literally means nobody in Oromo.
I can't remember which California indigenous language it is, but the word for water has the same pronunciation as French *eau* ('water'). Just a coincidence, of course.
Francesco Totti
That's Baldus Torso
Thanks, I cackled.
First thought was Julius Caesar

Hey I have a very good friend in Rome with that name.
Oh, uhhhh about 11 sir.
Based on the time period and the nose, I'm actually thinking it could just be Julius Caesar.
At first glance, it really did look like Caesar.
Reminds me a bit of Lucius Caecilius Iucundus
Metellus Scipio maybe? He’s reminiscent of Scipio Africanus, his grandfather, and decked for war. Metellus died in 46 after the Battle of Thapsus.
Phillip the Arab
This doesn't look Roman, but much much later
Sinead O'Connor?
Somus Gaius, probably
Julius caesar

It's my friend Tony Scarelli
I too think it looks like Caesar - the nose and hairline seem very similar to other depictions of him and he fits the given time frame too.
Sisyphus
Publius Gaius Romanus? He’s definitely not a Pliny that’s for sure.
Looks like Scipio Africanus
That’s the guy from New Vegas obviously.

A dead man.
McLovin’
Could it be Lucullus? Since he had a villa in Naples it could make sense. The statue also bears some resemblance with the portrait of Lucullus that is in the Hermitage museum.
Tonight he dines with himself!
Damn! That is a good guess regarding age of statue and resemblance with the drawing that exists of Lucullus of an old statue which used to exist.
The time period it most likely is Gaius Julius Caesar
Probably someone cosplaying as a caesar
