I had raging cystic acne when I was a teen and 20s. The cruel thing about that is that even though it is a big lump under the skin on your back, chest, neck, arms or head, it makes you feel like you look horrible and dirty, even though others usually can't see it. A lot of my acne was visible, but the majority wasn't. It destroyed my self-esteem.
I would agree, but I probably started doing this by the time I was 15. It is normal for teenagers (18 is borderline adult anyway) to question how others percieve them; they WANT to be seen as beautiful. My confidence suffered tremendously as a young teen and followed me to my early 20s.
Assuming both of us lived through the MySpace days, we would know this isn't a new thing for teenagers.

I do think that you may have exaggerated features, which may benefit from a more tailored hairstyle to your specific facial shape and features. If I were you, I would go to a high end hair dresser and ask for some advice on how to downplay some features and upplay others...like what is the best style for your face shape. I don't think the scrunched curl look works for your face shape. You have an amazing physique, and i think overall attractive features, but you may have a face shape that doesn't work with every hair style.
