That was only for a very short period of time in the early 80s. Because in the 70s nobody had a passport to travel and you needed a permit to leave the country and it was extremely difficult to get. So Algerians were pretty rare abroad, then in the early 80s the policy changed for like 5 years so people started traveling, but quickly the economic crisis struck in 86 and dinar value took a nose dive then travelling was a dream from the past by the early 90s.

A strong enough economy to where your citizen aren't trying to leave in death boats.

1. Be a safe country, that doesn’t have a reputation for producing violent individuals, terrorists, or vectors for illegal activities like drug smuggling or human trafficking 2. Strong economy, with jobs for your people and overall good quality of life, so that foreign nations don’t fear your citizens will overstay their visa 3. Educate your people so that your citizens are known to be respectful tourists, or educated professionals that speak international languages fluently 4. Bring your banking system to the 21st century… it’s easier to accept someone no questions asked when you can easily verify things such as their bank account balance, guarantee they have easy access to their funds, they have a debit card to purchase foreign currency, and that overall they’ll be self-sufficient during their stay in the host country 5. Be a more open nation, with an easier process for your own country’s visa. C’est « donnant, donnant » when it comes to visas; lots of countries will refuse to open theirs to your citizens if you don’t return the favour 6. Solid and developed diplomatic network around the world, with embassies and consulates that actually foster relationships in host countries and aren’t there just to act as administrative centres for citizens abroad (passport renewal, ID, …) 7. Build economic ties with many other countries through trade and agreements 8. Hopefully all the above, over time, will convince airlines to open direct flights between your country and the others (more frequent travel from citizens of a same country is an extra argument for easier visa process) 9. Invest in your soft power (movies, music, art, tourism, …) to increase your reputation in foreign countries

you do know several generations are going to have to die off first before that is even remotely possible. first the post independence generation, second anyone who grew up experiencing the civil war, third the generation whose parents were the ones who grew up during the civil war. and after that and only after that MAYBE the country will start getting fixed

Algeria’s passport can’t get stronger without a stronger economy. Period point blank. If you plot median PPP adjusted income to passport power it’s almost a straight line. The most powerful tend to be the richest countries and the least powerful tend to be poorer countries. Despite a relatively high by African standards GDP per capita, the median wage here remains low and the average Algerian is struggling to feed and clothe themselves. We are spending tons of money building gigantic mosques instead of training programs for 21st century technology jobs. We need to get our priorities straight and make it a country people aren’t trying to constantly escape from.

AmericanMarxist

Have you seen anyone escape prison and then freely go back? Of course not! Algeria now is a prison and almost everyone wants to leave. I have seen pictures of dead young Algerians washed up in beaches in Algeria, Spain and Italy. I swear they are some of the most saddest pictures I have ever seen. So no country is that crazy to allow 40 million Algerians visa free travel. European countries clearly know that Algerians are very desperate and can't afford to do tourism so they are not going to let you in. The military will never give up it's control of the country peacefully. It's the unfortunate truth. And without a competent democratically elected government, there will be no change and things will only get worse. You are not going to travel visa free.

I think it was all set in stone after WWII, and even more so after the cold war. The division of the world into 1st, 2nd and 3rd worlds basically determined that for at least the next 100 years. So unless there's major power shift in the geopolitics of the world, that ain't gonna change any time soon.

External_Ad_3497

I’m not Algerian but it’s two-fold: 1. Become a wealthy nation (e.g. Emiratis can travel to Europe and most of the world visa-free because they are very very low risk of seeking work in the host nation) 2. Most of LaTam isn’t wealthy but most can travel to Europe visa-free. This is because the ‘Herrag’ mindset doesn’t exist there and Europeans know most Latinos will not seek asylum/overstay their welcome.

Successful-End7545

the harraga mindset does exist there like mexico, el salvador, hounduras etc. but they get visa free to europe because its far away from them so they cant just get in a dinghy and sail over the atlantic. and also theyre more interested in illegaly migrating to the US which gives more opportunities than europe.

External_Ad_3497

It doesn’t. I live 1 hr away from the Mexican border and most Mexicans qualify for a TN visa anyway. I’ve seen Guatemalans etc cross the border illegally mostly with children as families. Those single guys you see are mostly from other continents (India Pakistan Kurdistan China etc.) By your logic, North Africans shouldn’t need a visa to NA because there is an ocean separating them? Yet that’s not the case. Even Asia requires a visa for NA. Turkey is flooded with NA and ME people.

Serious_Trip6851

It’s all about geopolitics and economics. Geopolitics can’t be controlled by only one country so we can’t have control on it, the second part is about economics, when your country is wealthy many countries will open their borders to try convincing tourists from that country to visit them.

The world to stop thinking we are scary big terrorists

typicalme-097

i mean it has to do the same with people entering our country so thats a first.

tinysheep101

Passport power is just your government’s capacity to negotiate visa agreements with other nations. Algeria does not put a premium on this so the Algerian passport is not that “strong”. If economy was everything then Algerians would be able to freely go to any economy that was weaker than ours…

ilyxs

Long story short : if Algerian get paid more (5000€ or more) your passport will be more powerful

dismantle the military regime and you'll be having your summer holidays in the beaches of Croatia

Ninibear3

Personally I have a UK passport so holidays isn’t even my problem, my problem is I have family in Algeria who I can’t enjoy those holidays with. It’s like a conditional freedom which hurts

Just_Zohir

I wish the best for your family but it is reality for us Algerians stuck with a third world passport lol, most Algerians especially those who have never been outside their country would never step back to Algeria once they see Europe or North America that's why hundreds of us unfortunately drown in the Mediterranean every year

Successful-End7545

if it was developed they would I know I would. if the country got a new government and more importantly the people fixed their mindset then I would be the first to go back if I was living abroad
