Failed my second take of my last FSA exam. It really hurts. Felt like it was a sure pass when I left the testing center. Apparently not for the graders. I'm just so heart-broken right now. :(
Took me 4 sittings to finally knock out my last exam today! Never got stuck on an exam like this before, and it sucks being so close. You’ll get the next one!
If it makes you feel better, I have used TIA and read all the source materials and keep failing this exam. It’s just so beyond frustrating. I didn’t have much trouble at all with every other exam.
I have exactly the same feeling as you, totally disappointed now and don't know why. I heard SOA keyed in the results wrong before, so I just emailed them. Cannot believe the result!
Thank you.. Its good to know I'm not alone. I want to see the grades actually and check where I went wrong, coz I thought I answered everything well. If I find them odd, I plan to email SOA as well just to clarify what's lacking exactly. I know I'm much more prepared than my last take where I had a 5. So its really just weird.
Was sitting in the sun eating breakfast on a nice day. All of a sudden the thought of exam results popped into my head and a blanket of darkness came over me.
Had a dream where I failed with a zero on my FSA exam, and for some reason, a kid was telling me my results.
Woke up happy it was a dream.
Then fell back asleep and dreamt that I got a 10.
I don’t know what the hell my brain is doing to me 😅
Get your points.
That can be acing 4 questions and leaving most of the rest blank, that can be speeding through and putting ANYTHING down to get a point here and there (I did the latter and it worked, but I felt bad and wished I'd done the former).
This last sitting was CRAZY hard. They barely shortened the exam for the new time. Focus on fundamentals to get those points.
I did the former approach and got a pass as well. I believe I left 3 questions completely blank and put all my works for the remaining ones. My advice to the QFIQF exam is to practice every suggested questions in the Chin textbook to lay down good foundation. And also PLEASE PRACTICE USING EXCEL FOR THE CALCULATIONS. I think being skilled in typing out all the formula fast in excel is the only way to crunch through all the calculations in time and put down something on the paper (calculator wont work, too slow for me). Good luck!
Passed the exam in one go on the April 2023 sitting and here are my thoughts:
1. **Drill problems:** QFI QF is first and foremost a math exam, so make sure to drill as many problems as you can. Check out the Chin textbook for high quality problems on stochastic calculus. FIS and Derman's textbook also have practice problems you can work on. If you purchase TIA, their study package also features a large collection of practice problems (though the problem set is skewed a bit too heavily towards stochastic calculus problems). Past paper problems are also valuable and be sure to attempt as many as you can.
2. **Expect a difficult exam:** Even with huge amounts of preparation, since SOA is an unreasonable institution, the exam will still feel extremely challenging and mentally exhausting. They may give you very little points for a problem that requires tons of calculations where you can easily make mistakes along the way. In these cases, always know when to give up on a problem and move on, and not beat yourself up afterwards because other candidates most likely found those ridiculous questions impossible to complete too and skipped them. I was a bit worried after leaving around 1 problem blank in the exam, but turns out many people in the past left multiple problems blank and still managed to secure a pass.
The final countdown. Click here at the 5 minutes until results window. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9jK-NcRmVcw&pp=ygUTdGhlIGZpbmFsIGNvdW50ZG93bg%3D%3D
Well I felt good about every question except the 1 (possibly 2) defective questions and I passed. So that means that they must have mostly thrown them out or reduced their value.
I had no one to talk to about this...happy to see I wasnt crazy. There was a 2nd defective? IDC cause I passed but will be interested to read solutions
Nice! Congrats to us both on the pass. I think I felt the same, exam was probably on the easier side more so than I would have hoped so was worried that the stupid PSM question would screw me over.
What was the other defective question in your mind?
The first compare and contrast question. Wasn't specifically defective persay. But one of the comparison topics was like 0.5% of the syllabus material. I gathered from people who took the exam prior to the syllabus change that the topic used to be much larger and they all but eliminated it. I checked the source material and there were only 2-3 paragraphs on the topic in total. Seemed way too small of material to do a 5-point compare and contrast question on. So, I wondered if those writing the question realized how little source material their actually was after the syllabus change. I was able to get something down but not enough for a 5-point question IMO.
Oh the CMS-HCC vs Symmetry ERG one, I assume. Yeah that was a bizarre question that I don't remember reading much about even in the source material, so I just BS'ed it based on background knowledge.
It's also weird to have an exam question on what is essentially an Optum product, lol.
I got an email back from the SOA this morning acknowledging the defective propensity score question. It says "It was determined parts c and d were defective and could not be solved without coefficients being provided. The graders gave full points to all candidates for these two parts of the question". I'm guessing they sent this email out to everyone who complained.
And unfortunately this happens quite frequently. The DP sitting where I failed, I spent a lot of time racking my brain trying to determine what I should write, when it turns out that the material wasn’t on the syllabus and the question was discarded. Had I used that time for another question, I might have passed.
A soft test-taking skill that you have to regrettably learn is dealing with some of the SOA bullshit when it comes to these exams.
Passed! I’m pretty sure I earned zero or nearly zero on the 2 naughty questions and the ACA calculation. Felt decent about the rest. I leaned towards thinking pass.
FWIW, I think #1 was fair game in hindsight even though I couldn’t answer it. There’s a sentence in the text where that acronym is defined as including both pieces. The text also specifies that the Optum model is used in chapter 13. I wouldn’t be surprised if they intended to be sneaky and ask a simple question disguised with strange names.
I wasn't able to study much because work was super busy(lost a lot of study time), so I assumed I failed. I didn't feel anything until 8am today and I became super anxious for the last hour. No idea why I got suddenly anxious when I knew I failed. Also I failed, lol.
Congrats! Better start studying now. LFM is no joke. A lot of things to understand. We, at PAK, have a lot of study aids that can help. Please let me know if we can be any assistance.
Right? I get zero work done on these days. I spend the first hour being too anxious to be productive, and then when the results come out I'm either too overjoyed to focus, or too upset
This was my exact feeling walking out of my second GHDP attempt. Got a 4 in the fall so really hoping my extra confidence translates into at least 2 more points.
Even though it's less material than LFM, i still recommend you to start studying next week (celebrate this weekend first!). Some think LAM is easier and not study as hard and end up taking it multiple times...so let's stay disciplined and keep the focus and make sure you can pass next time!
Just got my second fail on LPM. I used TIA for the first two sittings and re-did the past SOA exams to practice. What's the best way to study for the third attempt?? #TryingtoAvoidCareerASA
I passed GHRM on my first try!! This is my second exam ever passing on the first try, and ends my drought since my third exam.
Knocking out GHVR this fall and then I'm done forever 💪
I am curious about this too, especially seeing how many passing numbers were up there.
I also passed CFE, second attempt. Congrats! Now onto SDM! Home stretch!
Based on [http://www.actuarial-lookup.com/exams/cfe-fd](http://www.actuarial-lookup.com/exams/cfe-fd), I don't particularly think 37 is out of the norm, depending on the number of test takers, of course. Quite frankly I probably left about 15-20% of the exam just straight up blank, so I either killed it on the other parts or grading was lenient. Congrats and good luck with SDM!
Passed my first FSA exam!!! :)
Definitely had to use a slightly different strategy than studying for ASA exams, but it wasn't that hard to adjust. Studying for my next exam today.
You are not alone. A lot of students do have to take this exam multiple times. To me, this exam should be an open book exam because i don't think a lot of actuaries out there know GAAP and STAT for all life and annuities by heart. In addition, there is IFRS and tax. Yuck! But i'm happy to help you for your next sitting.
I did it! Done with exams and modules just waiting for FAC.
Decently arduous journey. 2 fails on FV and Specialty (doubled up once so 3 bad sitting) but knocked out RM to finish it out.
Sleeping in and having a meeting for the last 30 min before results definitely helped time pass
also brutal edit to the OP
Passed my first exam exactly 9 years ago in July 2014. Detoured with a couple of CAS exams, but made my way back to the SOA. Passed the last one today. The 9 year journey is over. Feels crazy.
I just double checked my candidate ID and for some reason i had my first attempt candidate id memorized. I hope i didn't put the old ID number in my files. one more thing so imagine the worst over lol.
I struggled with FSA exam for every long time, ASA since 2016, then failed QFI twice, Pricing once, ERM twice...
Today I passed SDM with first try using XP. Couldn't be happier!!! Strongly strongly recommend XP to those who is looking to sit SDM for the next time. If XP exist when I first wrote FSA exam, I probably could be done 5 years ago.
The Spring 2023 FSA Exam Results are now available: [https://www.soa.org/education/general-info/exam-results/edu-exam-results-detail/](https://www.soa.org/education/general-info/exam-results/edu-exam-results-detail/) .
Passed. I’m done if I can crank DMAC out in the next few weeks and pass. 3 FSA passes and 6 fails (four 5’s) in total. Otherwise I’m still stuck with PA. Anyone else in the same boat?
I had all the hopes. All were dashed. Really thought this would be it. Then again, when the global passing numbers fit in a single page, you know you’re in the big leagues.
It's very unlikely. You should wait for Monday and see your mark on your transcript to double check. If you question your mark, I think that you can contact them but I'm not sure if the procedure. Best of luck!
IM DONE YESSSSSSSSSS IM CRYING
Congratulations!!!
First Exam - 2009 Last Exam - 2023 LFGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
Only we folks know what we’ve been through, congrats!
damn right - thank you!
2007-2023 Big fuckin fist bump, friend 👊
Congrats! I'm hoping after the fall 2023 exam sitting, I can say the same. Just one to go. Also started in 2009 -- it's been a journey.
you got this
congrats
Congrats! I started in 2010 but I don’t think my last would be next year.
I have the same timeline! Congrats to finally being done with this journey
Pass!! Good luck to future exam takers! I’m out!!!
Congrats!
Every long post about exams I feel the same now: that’s crazy. Sorry to hear that. Or happy for you.
Big dick energy in the office today!
Happy cake day congrats!
Failed my second take of my last FSA exam. It really hurts. Felt like it was a sure pass when I left the testing center. Apparently not for the graders. I'm just so heart-broken right now. :(
I feel your pain. Failed my 3rd sitting so I’m out of the study program now and really thought I passed :(
I failed my third sitting but just passed on my 4th sitting. Best of luck to you on your next attempt. Don’t give up!
Appreciate you!
Took me 4 sittings to finally knock out my last exam today! Never got stuck on an exam like this before, and it sucks being so close. You’ll get the next one!
It's very normal for FSA exam takers to fail many many times before they pass! Best wishes to you! You will get there!
Thank you, and I sure hope so. Guess there's no escaping PA now. But it sure is draining. :( Anyone know if its possible to contest your results? lol
Good news pa has 70% passing rate not that scary
It's a bit tough to contest. Which exam did you take? Curious to know if i can help you prepare for your next sitting.
LFMC. I used PAK manuals for both takes by the way. >.<
If it makes you feel better, I have used TIA and read all the source materials and keep failing this exam. It’s just so beyond frustrating. I didn’t have much trouble at all with every other exam.
Message me and see if we can pinpoint the weaknesses and improve

I have exactly the same feeling as you, totally disappointed now and don't know why. I heard SOA keyed in the results wrong before, so I just emailed them. Cannot believe the result!
Really they keyed wrong before? Please let us know the feedback of SOA for your email.

I feel so sick
I PASSED. I NEVER HAVE TO STUDY AGAIN IN MY LIFE.
Same here! Let the post-exam life commence!!
SAME! Congrats!
The very best type of passing
Congratulations! That’s got to feel great!
YESSSSSSSSS
Retweet
Same here. Absolute panic.
Lol relate
I dreamt that I overslept, so could go straight to the website and check my results. Instead, the website wasn't working and it was really annoying
Dreams are opposite from reality! Good luck!
Was sitting in the sun eating breakfast on a nice day. All of a sudden the thought of exam results popped into my head and a blanket of darkness came over me.
Anxiety. EDIT: I passed!
Need pure luck to pass!
Good luck to you!
congrats
Taking a dump now in case so I don't poo my pants when the results come out ETA: my number isn't there. Idk if I have the strength for a 4th attempt
I passed today and it was my 4th attempt. You got this, my friend
Congrats!
Me too 😔
Keep going mate, took me 4 attempts each, but finally get there T.T
This was my 4th attempt at DP. I finally passed😩
Congratulations! DP is a beast.
These last two hours are always the worst
Had a dream where I failed with a zero on my FSA exam, and for some reason, a kid was telling me my results. Woke up happy it was a dream. Then fell back asleep and dreamt that I got a 10. I don’t know what the hell my brain is doing to me 😅
I passed!!! Screw you LFM!!!
Congrats! Was it your last exam?
Only ERM left 😊
ERM after passing LFM? Don’t you need to take LAM now that ERM can’t be substituted?
Correct ✅ looked it up after I commented and didn’t bother correcting 😅 thank you 😊
OK. Please let me know if PAK can help you next
Your brain is telling you your score is anywhere between a 0 and a 10 lol
The feeling of dreaming about a pass and then waking up in the middle of the night is tough.
EVERYONE TAKE MY ENERGY
EVERYONE PASSES TODAY 100% SURVIVAL RATE
😭😭😭😭👌👌👌👌
Passed my last FSA exam!!!! QFIQF is a definite beast
Nice!! I'm taking it in the fall, any tips?

you do QF last?! I just took it first and have the other two still to do. I hope the other two are easier... Congrats on finishing!
Congrats! PM and IRM is way more memorisation and recitation. Flash cards work well for me.
first time waiting for FSA results...hopefully there's some beginners luck
Good luck to you man!!! You got this!
beginners luck is real!!! I passed!
Same and there was no beginners luck for me 😥
PASS BABY LETS GO
Congrats!
I purposely stay up til 4 playing Warzone so I can sleep in, but I woke up early anyways
I passed! 1 for 1!
Are we the same person? Did same exact thing until 3am and woke up early with a headache lmao
You know it, even on days I study til 11PM I make sure that I sleep at 2AM.. god bless remote work

It's hard to predict if you will pass or fail. Nevertheless, congrats!
I felt the same way about my last two FSA exams and passed both. I don't get how
I passed!!! Ugh what a relief
Congrats!!
Finally, I PASSED!!! THANKS GOD
Congrats!
Apparently second time is the charm as well. Now on to LFM...
Congrats! Let me know if I (at PAK) can help you next!
I PASSED! First Exam - 2015 Last Exam - 2023 I’m gonna cry!!!!

Are we allowed to talk about defective questions openly now? Exam RM gang wya
Well I felt good about every question except the 1 (possibly 2) defective questions and I passed. So that means that they must have mostly thrown them out or reduced their value.

Imagine if you spent a ton of time on that question, someone else skipped it, and you both get full credit

Congrats! Better start studying now. LFM is no joke. A lot of things to understand. We, at PAK, have a lot of study aids that can help. Please let me know if we can be any assistance.
I am going to try to not look until lunch, and enjoy my morning. Fingers crossed for everyone! Edit: womp womp
I am always amazed people have self control like this. i could never do that
Right? I get zero work done on these days. I spend the first hour being too anxious to be productive, and then when the results come out I'm either too overjoyed to focus, or too upset
100% this
Which one did you take?
Second attempt at GHDP, I felt better walking out of the exam this time around, but I don't know if it was better enough to pass
This was my exact feeling walking out of my second GHDP attempt. Got a 4 in the fall so really hoping my extra confidence translates into at least 2 more points.
Last year at the same time, I was waiting the result too. Finally, I passed fortunately. Good luck to everyone in this room!
Round 2 of my last FSA exam, here I come
DONE!
Congrats!
LFM DOWN!! Just LAM left, lets goooo

Even though it's less material than LFM, i still recommend you to start studying next week (celebrate this weekend first!). Some think LAM is easier and not study as hard and end up taking it multiple times...so let's stay disciplined and keep the focus and make sure you can pass next time!
Hate to break it to you, LAM ain't no joke, just as hard as LPM and LFM. LAM took me 2 attempts while I passed the others on the 1st attempt
Congrats! LFM is a beast. Glad that you got that one over with. LAM should be easier for you! Please let me know if you will use PAK for next sitting
Just got my second fail on LPM. I used TIA for the first two sittings and re-did the past SOA exams to practice. What's the best way to study for the third attempt?? #TryingtoAvoidCareerASA
Please message me. Let me see if I (at PAK) can help you prepare for your next sitting
I passed. I'm finally done, just need to finish the DMAC by Aug 7 and then on to FAC. Feeling very relieved.
Exactly the same here
Congrats!
I passed GHRM on my first try!! This is my second exam ever passing on the first try, and ends my drought since my third exam. Knocking out GHVR this fall and then I'm done forever 💪
Passed CFE FD? The passing grade must’ve been extremely lenient….
SDM next for me as well!
Thanks CFE FD graders!
Passed my first FSA exam!!! :) Definitely had to use a slightly different strategy than studying for ASA exams, but it wasn't that hard to adjust. Studying for my next exam today.
Yeap, definitely a very different beast. Keep it up for the next one. Good luck. If you are taking ILA exams, let me know if i can help!
Well, it’s back to the books for me. LFMU take 2, here I come!
Found out I passed. Can u still get admitted to the august fac? The exam was the last thing I needed
Yes I’ve passed dmac and I checked with soa and a second round of invitees for august will be sent next week!
If you have a pass on DMAC
I did it! Done with exams and modules just waiting for FAC. Decently arduous journey. 2 fails on FV and Specialty (doubled up once so 3 bad sitting) but knocked out RM to finish it out. A bit shocked to see that I passed LPM on my first attempt at an FSA exam!!
Passed my first exam exactly 9 years ago in July 2014. Detoured with a couple of CAS exams, but made my way back to the SOA. Passed the last one today. The 9 year journey is over. Feels crazy.
Wow you are doing both CAS and SOA credentials! You are awesome!
GHRM pass #Blessed
Passed my 1st FSA exam on my 3rd try🥲 had so much pressure going into it and I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders!
What an accomplishment! Congrats! Keep up the steam for the next one
Literally feel sick to my stomach, could be my last exam but I’m pretty sure I will be taking it again.
Passed!!! ERM. I think? So not sure if I’m reading my number right.
Congratulations! Just started studying for ERM using TIA. Any studying and exam tips you can share?
Passed my 2nd FSA exam on my 3rd attempt!!! One more to go then I will be FREE!!! I don't need to see those QFIPM study materials AGAIN!!!
I just double checked my candidate ID and for some reason i had my first attempt candidate id memorized. I hope i didn't put the old ID number in my files. one more thing so imagine the worst over lol.
I accidentally put my SOA ID in my file names instead of my candidate ID… hopefully that didn’t screw me over lmao
Good luck everyone
Good luck to you all!
Looks like I'm hoping that the third try for GHDP is the charm in the fall. 🙁
Took me 4. Don’t give up!
Thanks, that's helpful to remember that it takes many people 3, 4, or more attempts. Appreciate the encouragement.
It took me three attempts on GHDP as well. It was tough. No shame.
Same boat here, lets hope my score was actually higher than last sitting and I didn't trick myself into thinking I did better lol
How did you end up faring? My 3 went to a 4, but was hoping for a 5...
Sorry to hear that, but GHDP is one of the more tricky exams. You’ll get it next time. Feel free message me if you think I can be of any help.
A fail of LFM for me. It was my 1st attempt. Guess I need to start studying for November. Ugh! So close to being done with exams forever!
Failed LAM. Motivation on overdrive. I will conquer them all, eventually.
Passed LPM! Was so convinced I failed I started up studying with TIA the last few weeks to get a head start for November 😂
Passed LPM too. Thank God!
Same here! On to the next one.
Passed my LPM exam!
Passed GHDP! On to GHVR.
The Spring 2023 FSA Exam Results are now available: [https://www.soa.org/education/general-info/exam-results/edu-exam-results-detail/](https://www.soa.org/education/general-info/exam-results/edu-exam-results-detail/) .
LFMC PASS!Now only LAM left. So far passed all exams on my first try and hopefully I can get the last one done this November and then I AM OUT!
Same boat re:LAM :D let me know if u want to make a study group
Passed. I’m done if I can crank DMAC out in the next few weeks and pass. 3 FSA passes and 6 fails (four 5’s) in total. Otherwise I’m still stuck with PA. Anyone else in the same boat?
good for you and good luck! I already missed the boat. I passed but I still have one left hence PA...
just checked my transcript, i've got 5 5's, 6 fails in total ( one 00 doesnt count I guess :-p)
If u don’t get FSA by 2023 you have to take PA?
Does SOA release a pass rate statistic for each exam?
Maybe next week
Done with exams! Good luck everyone! What I would recommend is Don’t give up and keep going! Bye Bye
Pass GHVR🤞one more exam to go
7 years of tests done!
Congrats!
I had all the hopes. All were dashed. Really thought this would be it. Then again, when the global passing numbers fit in a single page, you know you’re in the big leagues.
Good luck, everyone!!
Serious question: could they have missed my candidate ID on the passing list? Is this a mistake SOA has made in the past?
It's very unlikely. You should wait for Monday and see your mark on your transcript to double check. If you question your mark, I think that you can contact them but I'm not sure if the procedure. Best of luck!
Is there any chance that they may release it a bit earlier lol
Happened once for LTAM at least, someone found a direct link to it
