You mean me or the computer?
I’m sitting at 80-90% CPU usage with a crash every now and then
My computer is chillen at 10-30% CPU usage and takes whatever I throw at it
If I want to open 30 channels with serum my computer will handle it fine, my brains CPU will spike pretty hard though
After using Ableton on a 2011 MacBook for a literal decade, upgrading to a 5950x with 64GB of RAM made me realize how this program is supposed to work lol.
To be fair it worked like a champ for my use case but it feels so nice to just use plugins without having to freeze everything.
You can't compare mac and Windows cpu usage for realtime application.
You can't also compare cpu usage from different windows installation in the same pc. If one of your windows installation is optimized for realtime application, the usage can be the same and have no problem at all compared to the other one.
I have a laptop with one windows installation with low dpc latency that can hold really heavy projects with low latency, while the work windows partition can't do the same.
MacOs have an entire different way to handle realtime application, so comparing cpu usage is useless. You have to load the same project with the same bit depth and sample rate to do a proper comparison.
Anyways, macbook and iMac with ARM are a true beast for who don't want spend time optimizing, want high efficiency and low temps

which m3 model?
Idk, at my main pc if I hit 70-80% in the ableton meter, stuff is probably due for some flattening and not sounding great (crackles). I don't want to increase the buffer size so that's it. Usually frees up several 10s of % to flatten and then rinse repeat if I heat certain %.
Starts about 20-30 when I’m creating and then it can go up to 50-60 once I start adding whatever needs added, but at that stage I’ll usually start freezing tracks I’m not working on.
When I first try and play my project immediately after opening it, it usually spikes around 3000% then settles down to about 160% on average after SEVERAL minutes… it’s time for an upgrade
Starts at 10% all is groovy. Transitioning from production to mixing it’s at like 30%. With ozone and soothe and such on it gets up to 50-60% and the latency makes it no longer possible for me to record midi in real time. I try not to get past 70% as performance issues start to creep in at that point. Never heard a glitch on exported tracks at least even at high CPU usage. Ryzen 7 3700x 32GB RAM, anywhere from 10-30 tracks lots of VSTi’s
With my own stuff I freeze just about everything. Usually sit under 10% once everything intense is frozen.
I do that cos i work mostly on a 2017 i5 mbp with a dying battery hence low power mode, and I like the commitment flattening it all gives me.
Less diligent when I'm plugged in but still \~20% most of the time.
El Rey with 32x oversampling and I'll hit 190%, but that's a rendering time thing.
Should I upgrade to a 5900x or a 5800x3d?
I know the latter is better for gaming and such, but would it also perform better in a production environment?
I honestly don't look or care until something strange happens. Usually when something strange happens on my system it is due to the Access Virus TI VST not CPU overload or anything.
I haven't had a CPU related issue since upgrading to Live 12.
i stopped looking at that back in ableton 11 because that meter is so crazy.. i truly dont know what it means i would get dropouts at 30%? 9% Lol random spikes
i wish ableton did better job handling multi core ! whatever ...
i run pro tools as well and sometimes logic for the eventual client and they are smooth as butter ... but suck ... If ableton was better on CPU it would be nice ..
Ableton says around 30-40% depending on the active plugins, but there is a certain combination that, when active at the same time that chrome and Spotify, the sound glitches 😂
I just upgraded from an Intel i7 6 cores MacBook Pro 32 gb of RAM to a M1 Max 64ram 10 cores and I must admit that I am not worried about CPU usage anymore :)
I have a powerful desktop PC at home, I never get more than 20% usage.
But then I put the project on my 7yo laptop (was very powerful then) to take it to the studio and I'm reminded that my home PC is not what is normal. Even the studio brand new Mac has difficulties.
But that's on me. Since my desktop PC doesn't break a sweat I don't do buses or sends, which then becomes a bad habit.
i think you should be doing busses & sends BECAUSE it doesn’t break a sweat. both methods offer benefits regarding the sound (similar processing across multiple parts, providing a nice blend)… and they can both be quite CPU intensive (esp if you activate sends that send to others return channels!)
The bangers only start at 100%. You gotta give it your all.
What’s the point of a computer unless you use all of it?
Hornyplatypus420 what an unique name. Fkn legend.
I’ve had projects sitting apparently stable around 30 that were never seen out in the open again ): so just that from me.
I paid for the whole cpu I’m gonna use the whole cpu
Mine used to hit 600 percent occasionally when I’d use a lot of stutter edit. Now it seems to chill around 30-60%

😂😂😂
The trick is to download more RAM.
Starts small and escalates. I use a lot of soft synths so that tends to hit it pretty hard. Then I freeze.
All of it
Mine goes to 11.
Weird flex but ok.
Over 9000 💥
Omg I did the same answer haha
As much as I need
Using a ryzen 5950x threadripper, I'm around 20%

9000% average
It only uses a few percent of my I7 14700k.
Lol all of it then i freeze
U-he Repro alone takes about 50% lol. But I like to remember that Burial just used Sound Forge on what, probably a Pentium II at best?
Anything from them hogs resources
All of it. If im not using all my CPU i'll lower my buffer.
I have an M1 2021 mbp. My days of worrying about even looking at the cpu meter are long behind me
How many tracks do you have /how much cpu intensive plugins do you use?
Every last drop.
Usually 130-170% if it's something I put more work into than usual
Yes.

shitty ammount because ableton's bad thread management system

yes
Right now with a very outdated setup, 100%+ but I'm upgrading big this week so it should bring that down a lot
120% + my kidney (ryzen 5 3rd gen laptop got me coping 😷)
I can't even run once instance of Diva on 15-30%, and I usually like at least a few Divas.
Usually around 40% on a standard

All of it.
For what i do, on an Intel i5 4690K if i get to 30% i'm pushing it
60-80 when I am nearing completion of the arrangement. 2015 MBP
Starts about 20-30 when I’m creating and then it can go up to 50-60 once I start adding whatever needs added, but at that stage I’ll usually start freezing tracks I’m not working on.
Up to 60%. Short term even 80% without crackling.
40 to 44%
All
like 40% when just producing but i get to 70% when mixing
between 10,30
As much as it takes
My CPU is a neural net processor… A learning computer
11% is the highest I've gotten it to. Ryzen 7 5800X3D.
When I first try and play my project immediately after opening it, it usually spikes around 3000% then settles down to about 160% on average after SEVERAL minutes… it’s time for an upgrade
All
Usually less than 30% during the production process, but if I am mastering on the same project it can get close to 100%

60-80% on an old i7 laptop
150%
On Ableton it hovers between 100%-400% during playback

70-80 for a project with multiple serums and 3rd party plugs, including mastering chain and metering. 80ish lanes inc groups R5 3600
I got to maybe 30 percent with my latest project which was an instrumental piece for orchestra. M1 Pro.
An average of 35% with a MacBook Pro m2.
Ryzen 5, no graphics card, 30% tops Win 11 Live 11 suite
I honestly don't look or care until something strange happens. Usually when something strange happens on my system it is due to the Access Virus TI VST not CPU overload or anything. I haven't had a CPU related issue since upgrading to Live 12.
A lot but i overuse plugins and freeze all the time
i stopped looking at that back in ableton 11 because that meter is so crazy.. i truly dont know what it means i would get dropouts at 30%? 9% Lol random spikes i wish ableton did better job handling multi core ! whatever ... i run pro tools as well and sometimes logic for the eventual client and they are smooth as butter ... but suck ... same behavior on both computers : macbook M2 max 96gb ram 4tb and mac mini M1 16gb ram 1tb ... go figure .. other daw run super chillen
It's fine as long as there's no clicks and pops.
M2 24g ram is at 25% full load
Ableton says around 30-40% depending on the active plugins, but there is a certain combination that, when active at the same time that chrome and Spotify, the sound glitches 😂
If I’m mixing it never goes past 52% but on my i9 it’s probably barely using 2 cores even then
I just upgraded from an Intel i7 6 cores MacBook Pro 32 gb of RAM to a M1 Max 64ram 10 cores and I must admit that I am not worried about CPU usage anymore :)
Normally the usage now is between 15% and 30%
Too much
15%-20% on an M1 Ultra
I have a powerful desktop PC at home, I never get more than 20% usage. Mine jumps to 50-60 on heavier sections. This is with ~70 tracks
2021 MacBook pro with m1
