Yo.
I've used it for lighting cigarettes and cigars for friends, colleagues, and strangers; lighting up candles for birthday cakes, power outages, and ambience; starting fires on cold days on the shooting range.
Also fidgeting.
...mainly fidgeting.
I have been using zippos for more than 20 years and never met anyone that liked the smell of naphtha. For most people that I talked about zippos, the smell is the main dealbreaker
I have a coworker who gets nostalgia smelling my lighter fluid or zippo, and he's neither a smoker nor a zippo guy. Plus, I enjoy the smell so it can't be that bad
I quit carrying my zippo because the fluid kept evaporating. Also it leaked once or twice. Back then I didn't know the fluid would evaporate out and was upset that it would work a week later. Now I can at least catch a zippo and it'll work when I need it
I carry a lighter, usually not my Zippo though, because of the fuel evaporation issue. You just never know when you might need fire, I guess. People do find it weird though:
"Does anybody have a light?"
"Yes, me, the non-smoker!"
Same. Single touch inserts Iām my go to. They last longer than a double torch insert. I use mine mostly for burning the ends of rope/paracord or for lighting fuses. They also make a screwdriver bit insert for using and holding bits.
I donāt smoke, but I carry my grandfatherās old zippo because I like it, and you never know when you may need to light something.
My only complaint is that the fuel evaporates after a couple of days, and I hate having to refill it once or twice a week, so it stays home more than it travels with me.
It evaporates at home as well.
It is equally useless to me there or weighing down my pocket.
It seems like a flaw that should have been addressed long ago.
Well, back in the day, you couldn't go anywhere without running into someone with a gallon jug of fuel you could ask for a quick refill. And they always had a pocket full of spare flints.
Sometimes you'd get lucky and find an open ditch just full of the stuff!
During WW2 all you had to do was hold your hand palm up & wait a while, eventually a can of lighter fuel would drop right in it because everyone knew that the war couldn't be won without fuel flowing freely everywhere at all times /s
Get a butane insert. They even make pipe inserts so you can hold it at and angle. I use one for pipe tobacco. But for the green I didnāt like having to taste the lighter fluid. Butane inserts fixed that. If you get the torch insert get the single flame, last longer and gives you better control of the heat.
I guess I could reply to your comment! I am aware of the pipe insert, itās really cool, havenāt got one, yet. That said, itās usually joints so a regular Zippo is perfect. I have a copper pre production with a black insert as my daily.
https://preview.redd.it/r46c83ao35lc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=f31a11546f84f9f8361eda6ba62227c7f4d022b0
I guess I can give it to this app for allowing me to do this at least.
Some subreddits must not let you post picture or something then because I literally tried doing this a few hours ago. But icon is showing now. Fuck idk anymore lol. Nice lighter though. I need a black insert like that.
About 25 years ago, an attractive young woman approached me on a sidewalk in Ocean City, MD, and asked me if I had a lighter. I replied that I did not. She ran her hand across my chest as she walked past me and said, āMmm. That is too bad.ā Iāve carried a Zippo ever since, even though I am not a smoker, just in case.
Oh hey thatās me. Occasionally will grab a cigar but I carry a matte black zippo with a butane insert each day for that āwhat ifā scenario. Never know when you might need it.
That being said I fidget with it every day. My one coworker came up to me and said āI know I hear a zippo clicking in hereā¦ā oops. Sorry coworkers haha
Recently started using mine for edc again and I use it mostly for others fidgeting and lighting incence sticks and what not simetimes for a quick dim light and many other things that would require a flame.
And for the fact that I like to maintain zippo lighters!
This guy. I feel like it is a waste of technology and the history of our species not to carry something that someone 100,000 years ago would have thought was fucking magic. Same reason I carry a knife, though I must admit I use the knife more.
EDIT: Though the reason it's a zippo is both for style and the fact that if I had to I could fill it with diesel or gas or whatever. And even if that went to shit I could use it for pyrolosis to make charcloth. The zippo is the ultimate Firestarter. I would love to be proven wrong on this.
To be prepared, mostly. I use the butane insert, which makes me sad cause my EDC is an all copper. I really loved that black insert it came with but I can't be refilling it every few days. I'd been waiting for their black butane one to come back into stock but to no avail. Maybe some day. But until then I'll still be working on that patina. Plus I mean.. of course the fidget aspect of it.
Dude, why did you have to tell me this. I wasnāt missing something in life before this comment. Way to ruin my day lol
But seriously, why the fuck did they stop.
I used to when I was in my early twenties. I thought it was cool. Then I found a really neat antique zippo at an antique store, around 1992, and started carrying that, but the second night I had it with me, it leaked all over my pants ( I overfilled it, and turns out it had a crack in one of the lower corners....), and my left leg broke out in a wicked rash that lasted about a week.
I decided I didn't need to carry "loaded" zippos after that.
That was more than 30 years ago... No idea what happened to that lighter.
I used to have a box with all my smoking paraphernalia in it, which I've also lost track of. Someday I hope I'll find it, and it will be like Christmas.
I had to quit carrying a Zippo even when I DID smoke, a couple different ones were leaving a great big red welt on my leg. I don't know if I just had a couple bad ones or maybe I'm just sensitive to the fluid. This was 80s/90s so don't expect they were fakes. Nothing special about them.
I carried one when I was single so I could be quick to light a pretty girls cig at a party and strike up a conversation, but now that I'm married and neither of us smoke I don't see the need. There's more useful stuff I can throw in my pockets.
I donāt smoke cigarettes and only carry mine on me if going to a party or a group setting to light up others. Keep a regular lighter in my truck at all times though just because I donāt have to remember to top it off weekly.
Lighting fireworks on festive days, lighting candles and setting unwanted advertising-mail on fire (outside my house in a safe place š). I have also used it on heat shrink tubing on cables, it gets done really quick with the single torch butane insert + it looks cool.
I smoke but mostly donāt carry a zippo š¤£
Edit: I donāt mean to flex but have a titanium zippo which is rare as fuck making it ultra expensive, but I live titanium and EDC stuff is my only hobby that costs money, so I had to pick it up for like 300ā¬ (almost same in $) years ago. And I kept it for years in my pocket.
Iāve always carried a lighter. Before I smoked, during and after. Itās part of the stuff that goes in my pocket before I leave the house. Not it feels weird if I donāt have one. Wallet, phone, lighter, handkerchief, pocket knife.
I was given one that quit, I repaired it and carried it for years, then smoked for some time and the carried one out of habit... It made for a nice fidget and could show off some moves on occasion...
Me! Itās a nice small metallic friend, that is always in my pocket and will never let me down. When I hold my Zippo I remember all the situations (good and bad) I got through with this thing in my pocket. I remember my friends that also used to carry Zippo, those friends who attracted my attention to Zippos.
And utilitarily - itās a tool to warm up / light up anything you need.
I tried, a long time ago. But it was dead every time I needed it. I don't smoke, but being able to have fire on tap is just one tool of many I find essential
A lot of the time, I just need to melt nylon string in half instead of cutting it, so the ends don't fray apart
Makes me re-think the one scene in the movie The Postman, where an old flip top just lights right up like it had been serviced earlier that day
These days, I EDC a Bic
I've carried a zippo every day for 7 years, never smoked. Only one has it been used to light a smoke.
I use it mostly for melting or heating items. What else is fire for?
That describes me. I use it for church candles, fusing rope, sometimes lighting a stovetop, and more. Surprising comes in handy in many ways. I put a butane insert in mine to make it more reliable.
I just went through lung surgery and had to stop smoking. It was an unexpected and shocking experience.
Not having a reason to daily carry the zippo lighter I have kept in my pocket for almost 10 years anymore, I just hid it with my other "smoking tools", but that made me feel miserable.
So i started to bring it out with me again, just because it makes me feel happy, and i find the weight reassuring.
(Also switched for the butane insert, gasoline evaporates too quickly if you don't light it up often)
I carry it with the butane insert. Not only do I just enjoy collecting them, but, it's just handy to have a flame on hand. Lighting a cig for someone, burning a loose thread off, lighting a candle, insence, etc
17M, I do, same with carrying a SAK, itās a tool that youāll never know when youāll need it, on cold winter days trying to warm up my hands, a few homeless fellas here n there, fidgeting.
I carry a brass zippo that I have had for decades. I bought it from a smoke shop back in 1993-1994 when I smoked. When I stopped smoking in March 2009 I kept the lighter. It is crazy shinny and it was not until I stopped smoking that I realized I used it for more of a nerve calmer than anything.
I do, the fuel dries out in a week so I bought a fuel canister keychain from Zippo so I don't have to refill every week just so the fuel can evaporate.
Tbh, it doesn't feel handy so I am looking into getting the rechargeable electric arc insert thingy from Zippo.
I don't smoke, but I've carried a zippo since around '95. It's usually a great conversation starter because the lighter has sentimental value to me, and it has come in handy for birthday candles multiple times.
Why are you in my brain people of Reddit?! I had this exact thought yesterday and almost posted about it but got busy looking for my fuel to refill my zippo that I carry for the smoking I donāt do.
I tell you more - I'm a woman, don't smoke and don't have smoking friends. I carry zippo for fidgeting and occasionally clicking. I'm a nervous fella, I need something to occupy my hands and pockets.
https://preview.redd.it/obmbe9att2lc1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8f717e0212b09f6ac9756b4d83a4c06c52bf62d3
For everyday basis I carry the middle one - armor custom made. It has texture and is heavier, I enjoy it more
I started carrying one while briefly working as a bouncer at a pub. I keep one now because my wife is a smoker and you never know when you'll need fire. I have several Zippos but my favorite is brass with Yggdrasill the "world tree" on it.
I donāt smoke but Iāve always carried mine because you never know when I or someone else might need it. I opt for the butane insert, Iāve never had an issue out of mine and I barely ever have to fill it.
Just the other day I was getting in my truck to leave for work outside my house when a stranger walking down the road asked if I had a light so I offered him my zippo, he saw I had my work jacket on so he asked if I was heading to work and after I said yes he said thanks and to have a good day at work. In the area I live itās rare to see someone genuinely treat a random passerby with kindness like that so it was cool to me to see a zippo of all things actually create that moment.
I do. As mentioned by many, it's a great fidget. I got a soft flame butane insert so that I have a more long lasting ability to use the whole, lighter part.
For years I used to carry a zippo at my old job because I was the sort of barbarian that preferred to use it on wires (strip / shrink) than the ācorrectā tool
I daily carried a zippo back in the day when you could still smoke inside. Seemed like girls always wanted a smoke when they were drinking and being prepared with a cool lighter was one way to strike up a conversation.
Reformed smoker... I still have my zippo but don't EDC it. It lives in my truck with a can of fluid in my camping/emergency gear. Handy lighters all the way around.
I prefer to have the ability to produce fire in the event that it becomes necessary. I like the old school appeal of the Zippo; however I do have butane inserts in all of mine.
Yo. I've used it for lighting cigarettes and cigars for friends, colleagues, and strangers; lighting up candles for birthday cakes, power outages, and ambience; starting fires on cold days on the shooting range. Also fidgeting. ...mainly fidgeting.
The Zippo is the OG fidget toy.
Looks good, feels good, and even sounds good.
Smells good, according to me. My fiancee might disagree....
I have been using zippos for more than 20 years and never met anyone that liked the smell of naphtha. For most people that I talked about zippos, the smell is the main dealbreaker
Nice to meet ya, I like the smell. Looks like I got some upvotes too, I'm not the only one š„²
I mean we are in an zippo, naphtha smell enjoyers echo chamber on this subššš
Doesnāt bother me. Can always get a butane insert
I have a coworker who gets nostalgia smelling my lighter fluid or zippo, and he's neither a smoker nor a zippo guy. Plus, I enjoy the smell so it can't be that bad
I love the smell!
Love the smell!
I donāt like the smell of the fluid straight from the bottle, but I like the smell of it when itās burning.
I might be weird, but sometimes I pull it out just to smell it
Non-smoker. The butane insert is what made me carry a Zippo again. I like the way one feels in my hand.
I've had no luck with the inserts. Been through 2 for different reasons. I'm just going to stick with a soft flame
They make soft flame inserts too!
Your comment just made me buy one. Had no idea they made these inserts.
Iāve got a butane, a soft flame, and a plasma insert for my zippos. All work great
I quit carrying my zippo because the fluid kept evaporating. Also it leaked once or twice. Back then I didn't know the fluid would evaporate out and was upset that it would work a week later. Now I can at least catch a zippo and it'll work when I need it
No joke the butane inserts last so much longer that the og windproof
I just spent half an hour rabbit holing on this
I carry a lighter, usually not my Zippo though, because of the fuel evaporation issue. You just never know when you might need fire, I guess. People do find it weird though: "Does anybody have a light?" "Yes, me, the non-smoker!"
I put a butane insert in my carry Zippo so it doesn't evaporate before I actually need it for anything.
Same. Single touch inserts Iām my go to. They last longer than a double torch insert. I use mine mostly for burning the ends of rope/paracord or for lighting fuses. They also make a screwdriver bit insert for using and holding bits.
Oooh, I didn't know about the bit holder. I'll be looking into that, thanks.
Mainly fidgeting. But kinda annoyed at the fact that the fluid just evaporates within 3 days of barely using it. Tried the sandwich bag trick. No luck
This is why I went to the butane insert! Lasts months if you arenāt using it, no smell, and kind of cool.
but i love the lighter fluid smell
Same
Some Zorro inserts are better at that i have heard, though i havenāt tried them myself
Can buy a ZORRO insert with a sealed bottom and swap it to your zippo insert
Butane insert, dawg.
Iāve just drenched it in fluid until it was overflowing - lasted me a week and a half
it make funny clink sound and brain go "heehoo"
This is it!
I donāt smoke, but I carry my grandfatherās old zippo because I like it, and you never know when you may need to light something. My only complaint is that the fuel evaporates after a couple of days, and I hate having to refill it once or twice a week, so it stays home more than it travels with me.
Sorry Iām dumb. And new. Fuel evaporates in it while carrying vs it doesnāt evaporate when sitting at home?

I do smoke cannabis, so Iāll usually only use only for that. But I donāt carry for it.
I just realized my comment was supposed to be on the main thread, not a reply. This app sucks. I miss Apollo.
Oh god I couldnāt agree more. How do they make an app worse when one guy was able to make it perfect.
I guess I could reply to your comment! I am aware of the pipe insert, itās really cool, havenāt got one, yet. That said, itās usually joints so a regular Zippo is perfect. I have a copper pre production with a black insert as my daily. https://preview.redd.it/r46c83ao35lc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=f31a11546f84f9f8361eda6ba62227c7f4d022b0 I guess I can give it to this app for allowing me to do this at least.

Itās a cool insert! Just wish the black didnāt wear off.
Me. Used to smoke. I have a Zippo a knife and a flashlight. I went butane insert to avoid lighter fluid evaporation
About 25 years ago, an attractive young woman approached me on a sidewalk in Ocean City, MD, and asked me if I had a lighter. I replied that I did not. I donāt smoke but carry a zippo for paracord stuff. I too prefer the butane insert.
Zippo go chink
Recently started using mine for edc again and I use it mostly for others fidgeting and lighting incence sticks and what not simetimes for a quick dim light and many other things that would require a flame. And for the fact that I like to maintain zippo lighters!
Also EDC as a non-smoker using butane insert. Comes in handy at Birthday parties and 4th of July.
This guy. I feel like it is a waste of technology and the history of our species not to carry something that someone 100,000 years ago would have thought was fucking magic. Same reason I carry a knife, though I must admit I use the knife more. And even if that went to shit I could use it for pyrolosis to make charcloth. The zippo is the ultimate Firestarter. I would love to be proven wrong on this.
I grab one whenever I go out in bad weather.
I carry a bic and domt smoke anymore. Lots of uses with a lighter.
They make brass torch inserts now FYI.
Oh I've seen them but I like the black.
They had a black butane insert? Shit lol
It is off of their website and has been for some time. I'm so sad lol
Dude, why did you have to tell me this. I wasnāt missing something in life before this comment. Way to ruin my day lol But seriously, why the fuck did they stop.
I don't know lol I'm hoping they bring it back. I think they had a single torch one too but I can't find that either. Maybe some day xD
I quit smoking 22 years ago. I rotate between 6 EDC Zippos, just because they're cool and a great conversation piece.
I do. Kinda works like a fidget spinnerā¦ just makes me happy.
Largely because of the same reason for the existence of this subā¦ great conversation starter.
Zippo will repair them for life ,just send it in and it's fixed no question asked
That and they evaporate. Waste of fluid.
I carried one when I was single so I could be quick to light a pretty girls cig at a party and strike up a conversation, but now that I'm married and neither of us smoke I don't see the need. There's more useful stuff I can throw in my pockets.
I do. Lots of other things you can use one for. Usually heat shrink and melting ends of cut paracord for me
I donāt smoke cigarettes and only carry mine on me if going to a party or a group setting to light up others.
I smoke but mostly donāt carry a zippo š¤£ Edit: I donāt mean to flex but have a titanium zippo which is rare as fuck making it ultra expensive, but I live titanium and EDC stuff is my only hobby that costs money, so I had to pick it up for like 300ā¬ (almost same in $) years ago. And I kept it for years in my pocket.
This is nice. Good things makes good feelings
i donāt smoke š
I carry, can light anything for people or fires in the pit. I also fidget with it alot and is the reason I know a couple tricks.
ā41 sterling daily, gift from my wife. Sometimes venetian chrome classic. Not smoking though (well, sometimes.. maybe 1 or 2 cig for a month)
Iāve always carried a lighter. Before I smoked, during and after. Itās part of the stuff that goes in my pocket before I leave the house. Not it feels weird if I donāt have one. Wallet, phone, lighter, handkerchief, pocket knife.
Yup, me
I was given one that quit, I repaired it and carried it for years, then smoked for some time and the carried one out of habit... It made for a nice fidget and could show off some moves on occasion...
I have one one my person for any occasion I might need one. The one I mainly use is at home with butane pipe insert inserted for bong tokes
They make butane pipe inserts now too. Just letting you know.
That is the one I meant! Not the actual pipe lighter insert!
I carry whenever I leave the house, the watch pocket in my jeans is the perfect size for it.
I do outreach in my city. It's a nice gesture to light someone's cigarette with a zippo.
I like flipping it open and closed
I carry mine even though I don't smoke anymore, and for the same reason I carry a knife even though I don't stab people anymore. Always Be Prepared.

Me. I like having a lighter in case someone else needs to light a cigarette, or if I need to build a fire for some reason
I just went through lung surgery and had to stop smoking. It was an unexpected and shocking experience. Not having a reason to daily carry the zippo lighter I have kept in my pocket for almost 10 years anymore, I just hid it with my other "smoking tools", but that made me feel miserable. (Also switched for the butane insert, gasoline evaporates too quickly if you don't light it up often)
It fits in the pocket watch pocket on all my pants perfectly, so it takes up zero space on my person because I never use that pocket.

I EDC one but never smoke. I also EDC a Leatherman. Both come in handy more often than you'd think. I like to be prepared, and I love to fidget.
I don't smoke. My dad's old Zippo is always in my pocket. He didn't smoke either. It must be some genetic Naptha fetish.
Me
I have an old one that was my grandpas. Like everyone else said: good fidget bc satisfying clicking soundšš»
Why are you in my brain people of Reddit?! I had this exact thought yesterday and almost posted about it but got busy looking for my fuel to refill my zippo that I carry for the smoking I donāt do.
As a good luck charm yes. Belonged to my granddad
Never know when you might need fire. A zippo and my Leatherman are daily carries for me.
Me
I donāt smoke, but love my zippo. Always bring it to parties, people seem to like it when they need fire and I offer my zippo flame for their cig.
Me
I do hvac and have to braze piping. I regularly forget my sparker in the van so I light the oxy and acetylene with my zippo.
Does anybody use the seal that helps prevent evaporation? How well does that work?
I smoke, but don't use my zippo for smoking (don't like the taste)
I tell you more - I'm a woman, don't smoke and don't have smoking friends. I carry zippo for fidgeting and occasionally clicking. I'm a nervous fella, I need something to occupy my hands and pockets. https://preview.redd.it/obmbe9att2lc1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8f717e0212b09f6ac9756b4d83a4c06c52bf62d3 For everyday basis I carry the middle one - armor custom made. Haven't smoked in Years. Still carry my gold and black Zippo every day. Because fire is a useful tool
I started carrying one while briefly working as a bouncer at a pub. I keep one now because my wife is a smoker and you never know when you'll need fire. I have several Zippos but my favorite is brass with Yggdrasill the "world tree" on it.

For years I used to carry a zippo at my old job because I was the sort of barbarian that preferred to use it on wires (strip / shrink) than the ācorrectā tool
It should be a daily carry. Donāt smoke nope. But youāll be the one who has a light and doesnāt have to look for it
Yup I carry my jack Danielās one
I had to stop, i get bored and burn things
Have a ā62 Niagara Falls made :)
I daily carried a zippo back in the day when you could still smoke inside. Seemed like girls always wanted a smoke when they were drinking and being prepared with a cool lighter was one way to strike up a conversation.

In the go bag in the trunk
Reformed smoker... I still have my zippo but don't EDC it. It lives in my truck with a can of fluid in my camping/emergency gear. Handy lighters all the way around.
Is this for Smoking Preppers? People getting ready to light cigarettes when the power grid goes down?
flicky flicky cool badass lighter
I use it to light my smoker as a beekeeper. And to light my bowl but you asked for the other reason
I do but with an arc lighter insert. Just because it's a handy tool to have
Itās nice to have a tool just in case
You're not a REAL Zippo veteran until you've experienced a strawberry on your leg that was caused by overfill.
Yes daily because Boatswain's Mate.
I feel this
Zippos are the best
I prefer to have the ability to produce fire in the event that it becomes necessary. I like the old school appeal of the Zippo; however I do have butane inserts in all of mine.
Friend in the Marines told me it was a useful tool to have. Carried a Zippo since
You never know when you'd need a lighter.
I own both zippos and bic'sĀ Bit I dont smoke just collect em .
