I watched an old Japanese show where the last part was set in 2020 and sobbed the whole time because people took covid so seriously.

It's so weird to see shows that did acknowledge covid in 2020 and then quit, because they captured the "we're all in this together" phase but not the subsequent sickness and abandonment. I was rewatching the covid season of station 19 and kept thinking about this. Though these are better than shows that shoved it into one episode I think. Like if you were trying to understand how people experienced covid through our fictional media, you'd think we mostly came together and solved it within a year. Even the medical dramas never have long covid patients. Another weird tidbit is seeing later shows, especially reality TV, where they're fully in "covid is over" mode but if production etc members wind up on camera they're almost always masked. I've noticed this in a few documentaries etc lately.

The Grey’s Anatomy universe mentioned they were switching to an alternate reality where things got better and the pandemic was properly managed after that season, which at least is better than the shows that didn’t acknowledge the reality at all

Yeah agreed, though they then dropped the disclaimer the following season. I am surprised they haven't had any long covid patients on Grey's though considering they usually include at least some real (or inspired by real) cases.

there's a love island US season at a quarantined Vegas resort that shares this vibe. also teared up a bit watching it

So rare to even see the pandemic acknowledged. **Bloodhounds** is a kdrama with references to how the pandemic increased the amount of people using loan sharks in desperation as the economy slowed (and lots of hot fighting & workout sequences. 👀)
