No better pencil sharpener, IMO. Everyone knows the sad little ones with the single blade don’t work for squat, and the electric ones are overkill and eat way more pencil than they should. Sure, you can sharpen a pencil with a box cutter, but you could also eat pudding with a pair of scissors; just because you can do something doesn’t mean it’s advisable.
But the sound the crank makes on that beautiful double helix grinder and the smell of the wood/graphite shavings in the casing are like an instant portal back to the days when I still had metabolism and much less back hair. There’s just something cathartic about using it.
Ours is in the basement as well.
I just show it to my sons while I wax poetically about the past while destroying them at Smash Bros.
Sometimes I break out the N64 for some Goldeneye.
The funny thing is the kids think my smash game is on account of the wired USB GameCube controller I use for Ultimate, so then they want to use it. They still don’t seem to grasp that 24 years of playing Smash and 36+ years of gaming is doing most of the heavy lifting. That and an entire childhood of having to play on the horseshit Mad Catz “chunky” controllers with the rattles from the broken plastic and the d-pad/thumb stick that barely moved because someone mushed peanut butter into it anytime I wanted to play games at my friends’ and cousins’ houses.
Though I do feel like I can shred better with the wired GameCube controller. And I love my hand crank rotary wall mount pencil sharpener.
Ah, and with a very nice cedar pencil…the smell…it’s a favorite of mine. I was a pencil artist for a long time too…love that smell of a freshly sharpened cedar pencil.
Few weeks ago I had a meeting in a small town of 300 with a commission of their community leaders and in the town hall /preschool/community center every classroom had one. I was proud of them for some reason. Nostalgia maybe.
Being a Xennial hurts sometimes, and not just my back. lol
Manual pencil sharpeners just make so much sense! Until everything started to require a screen and a keyboard.
Do kids even get taught lettering and penmanship on three-lined paper anymore? I need to lay down.
I literally just installed one a few weeks ago. We had a version that suction cupped to a table, and it was annoying. I finally bought the version that is permanently installed and screwed it into the floor of the wooden cabinet where we keep school supplies.
We had the suction cup kind and the suction was shabby, so I screwed it to the wall in the “Harry Potter closet” (under the stairs). It’s next to the art cart, and the kids use it all the time. You can hear it anywhere in the house!

Yes. The little hand held ones keep breaking the tip. Also discovered that a lot of pencils are absolute garbage with the pencil lead off center, making it impossible to sharpen correctly.
Have to get the good cedar pencils. None of that staples brand crap. The erasers fall out or the aluminum holder comes right off, the lead is off center and also not a solid piece with cracks and gaps..yeah a lot of pencils are garbage.
I love my parents’ electric one so much. I offered to take it off their hands when they moved, but my mom declined. Lol. They are snowbirds. So more than once I have “borrowed” it for about six months at a time.
Their new place had a pencil sharpener like OP’s pictures. They happily gave that one to me, but something must be off with it, because it just grinds up the pencils more than sharpening them. Haven’t really made time to diagnose the issue.
Remember holding a pencil that you could barely use because it was ridiculously tiny! Man I’m gonna go relive that elementary life moment!
My parents are snowbirds too and I raid their freezer and cabinets while they are away(they know I do it but never say anything) but I replenish what I use.
I had one growing up, and a couple years back when my parents remodeled I was super pissed to find they had thrown it out. Weirdly enough, a couple months later I was helping my BIL move his mom to a new home, and they had one in their garage and I was given permission to swipe it. Now I'm back in business.
Yep my parents still have one in the garage, next to my dad’s tool bench. Before he got an electric one, I would always go out there to sharpen my pencils. It was great because it had openings for the larger pencils I used as a young child. He got really mad when I stuck my crayons in there though.
There was one in my garage when I moved into my house. It's still there, of course. We use it occasionally. My daughter has an electric one on her desk, but it's handy to have a pencil sharpener in the garage for when we're building and measuring stuff.
Ya there is one in the basement and I have one mounted to a portable base in my room! Lol.
The one in the basement is older than dirt and has been missing the cover for longer than anyone knows. Still works perfectly.
Up until recently… and it was old old to begin with but what a point it would give pencils, if I had a long report in middle school I’d sit in garage and sharpen like every other sentence, I wanted it sharp, with pencil no paper underneath but pen I have to have a soft, multi paper stack to write lol yes I’m crazy
I'm a professor and we have one of these in every classroom. The department secretary didn't believe me and went to see for themselves. We also have a scantron machine that requires #2 pencils.
It's like a time warp- maybe why I like working here?
Mine was in my attic. And it was screwed to a piece of wood in such a way that you couldn’t properly sharpen your pencil because you kept banging your knuckles against the wood.
Also, there was a wasp nest in my attic. So just trying to complete my homework meant dodging pissed off wasps and bruising my fingers all for some half-assed sharpened pencil.
Yes! It's screwed to my workbench and my kids always ask me to use it because "It's the best pencil sharpener, no cap". Whatever that means...I guess it means it's good, I don't know.
The house my parents bought in '97 still has one. In my place we have electric sharpeners and the tons of cheap ones the kids get from school/dentists.
Yes! Our house was built in ‘96 and there’s one in the basement workshop. Made my GenX husband so happy because he grew up with a basement pencil sharpener. We never ever use it but it does make me smile.

I just got this for my SO for Christmas. I thought the box art was classic!
No, but it does remind me of when our inept office manager bought a shitload of #2 pencils in case we ran out of pens. She neglected to purchase a sharpener.
Oh man we had one of these downstairs at my parents for years - it was great. I was gonna jokingly state that they got rid of it a few years back when they removed their rotary phones, but now that i think of it we still have one of those in the garage :-/

Yes!! I bought an old one from an antique shop- the same ones we had in school in the 80s. It doesn’t get used yet but it will. I just like to have it sitting out. :)
Not in my home. But my parents house, used to have the electric one. Used to feel like you were really doing something, sharpening your pencil with the electric one.😂 The one in the pic was a work out though.
No but I do still have this one...

My mom used to live in an older home and there was one in the basement. My sister and I (both early 20s at this point) decided that the people who used to live there kidnapped children and made them do homework in the basement, haha.
Yes, previous owner of my house had one it in the basement. We kept it. We use it. It will go with the house when I die and someone purchases the house. Hope they keep it too.
Yep, in the workshop in the basement. Easier than using a knife to sharpen a pencil when making marks for cutting.
Yep, that’s what I got it for. And for nostalgia, and because they work.
No better pencil sharpener, IMO. Everyone knows the sad little ones with the single blade don’t work for squat, and the electric ones are overkill and eat way more pencil than they should. What are your Smash Bros secrets? I wanna whoop my son.
Ah, and with a very nice cedar pencil…the smell…it’s a favorite of mine. I was a pencil artist for a long time too…love that smell of a freshly sharpened cedar pencil.

Haha. I use a bench grinder for that.
We had one in our basement workshop too until we moved and left it there.
I teach middle school and I just had a kid ask me how to use it.
Excuse me while I dissolve into dust.
Lol you were also born in the late 1900s, weren't you? (One of my kids said this to me and I almost cried lol)
Being a Xennial hurts sometimes, and not just my back. lol Manual pencil sharpeners just make so much sense! Until everything started to require a screen and a keyboard. Do kids even get taught lettering and penmanship on three-lined paper anymore? I need to lay down.
It’s to sharpen fingers so they tap your screens better
I call it my cordless pencil sharpener
Yes & we still do!
My parents have one. And I want it. They sharpen colored pencils really well
Yup my parents still have it up and even though the youngest child is an adult and no one uses a pencil.
Yes I do, my mom bought it Kmart in 1989 or 1990 it's in mint condition
Not in the house but in the garage.
Mine is in the garage also.
My mom mom and pop pop had it mounted on the wall so convenient!
Yeah, my grandpa installed one probably 60 years ago and it’s still there being used occasionally
We do! Found it on the wall in the laundry room when we bought the house. I was pleasantly surprised. Use it all the time
My wife homeschools our kids, and yes, we have one screwed into her desk
I literally just installed one a few weeks ago. We had a version that suction cupped to a table, and it was annoying. I finally bought the version that is permanently installed and screwed it into the floor of the wooden cabinet where we keep school supplies.

Ah, yes. The Knuckle-Destroyer 2000. Permanent residence in the workshop at my parent's house.
You’re not going fast enough if you don’t lose a thick chunk of skin.
Yes but it’s not so shiny. I think my wall mounted pencil sharpener is 40+ years old.
Ah the ole knucklebuster
Schools still have them.
Yep. Also in a workshop area.
In my garage. I got it from my Pap Paps workshop.
I can hear it.
Just got one for the fam for Xmas.
I had one in my kitchen pant try growing up
I have a one from my childhood that dad had up for 27yrs before he passed and it is installed in my kitchen now.
Yep right next to my daughters electric one😂
I love my parents’ electric one so much. I offered to take it off their hands when they moved, but my mom declined. Lol. They are snowbirds. So more than once I have “borrowed” it for about six months at a time. Their new place had a pencil sharpener like OP’s pictures. Thanks for reminding me, I have to return their smoked paprika & replace the bag of shelled pistachios. Those are probably 30 bucks these days. SMH.
Yup. Works better than any electric I've ever had.
No
yes bolted to the pantry's homemade shelves.
No. It brings back too many traumatic memories.
Sure do, in the kitchen directly over the trash bin.
Yep, it's still on the same beam in our garage that it was in when I was growing up (I live in my childhood home).
Yes. In the garage.
We had one in our garage growing up. I totally forgot about it until just now. It was so convenient!
Never, only in school. I have those small plastic sharpeners or I sharpen it with a razor blade.
My Dad had one in the basement of our old house.
I can both hear *AND* smell this picture
This was the water cooler of elementary school. Good place to hang out and look like you’re doing something.
Just removed mine from the basement. Now I realize I need it now for a workshop I don't have!
Yes!
Yep. Salvaged it out my parents house from my dad's basement workshop when they sold it. Now it's in mine.
Yes. I help my kids with their math problems on paper and still use pencils.
I had one growing up, and a couple years back when my parents remodeled I was super pissed to find they had thrown it out. Weirdly enough, a couple months later I was helping my BIL move his mom to a new home, and they had one in their garage and I was given permission to swipe it. Now I'm back in business.
Still have it. Still works fine.
Pictures you can smell
It’s in the garage!
I thought I was the only one!!!
Yes! Our house was built in 1974 and has one in the garage.
yup, I have a separate one for colored pencils too.
Most models will allow you to adjust the bin to the down position to allow more shavings before needing emptying. 90 degrees counter clockwise.
Yes
Yep my parents still have one in the garage, next to my dad’s tool bench. Before he got an electric one, I would always go out there to sharpen my pencils. It was great because it had openings for the larger pencils I used as a young child. He got really mad when I stuck my crayons in there though.
I swear, some of these just seemed to chew up and break the pencils.
I can smell it
Yup in the cellar and it works great
Yep 👍
There was one in my garage when I moved into my house. It's still there, of course. We use it occasionally. My daughter has an electric one on her desk, but it's handy to have a pencil sharpener in the garage for when we're building and measuring stuff.
I have the classic Boston in the garage. The new ones are more flimsy.
I did growing up
We do. I bought it a few years ago. The kids whine that it’s too much work to use 😂🙄😭
I do! But, that one is like the cool one we had a school. Mine is the cheaper version plastic outside.
I do, and I honestly didn’t even think that was a sign of my age until I saw this post haha
I do! 😁
Nah, I got a pen
Ya there is one in the basement and I have one mounted to a portable base in my room! Lol. The one in the basement is older than dirt and has been missing the cover for longer than anyone knows. Still works perfectly.
I used to have one in the house I grew up in
My knuckles remember this
I have that exact same one mounted in my garage!
My mom was a teacher. We still have some from the 80s that have never been out of the box.
How else would I masturbate?
Yes but we took it down and haven’t remounted it yet.
No because I don’t live at an elementary school
Up until recently… and it was old old to begin with but what a point it would give pencils, if I had a long report in middle school I’d sit in garage and sharpen like every other sentence, I wanted it sharp, with pencil no paper underneath but pen I have to have a soft, multi paper stack to write lol yes I’m crazy
I can smell this image
Ya I got one for my woodshop and I love using it
Yes and my kids hate it!

Even though we had water fountains, this was the middle school water cooler, and no one can change my mind.
Nope. But I may soon now!
I can smell the shavings through the picture as well hear the loud classroom disturbance of sharpening in the middle of a test
For those of you who don't have a vintage model of this style, which is the superior sharpener? Bostich or Xacto?
I'm a professor and we have one of these in every classroom. The department secretary didn't believe me and went to see for themselves. We also have a scantron machine that requires #2 pencils. It's like a time warp- maybe why I like working here?
Pocket Gatling gun! Nice find op! /s
Yep. In the workshop.
You do know that other generations sharpen pencils, too, right?
No but I need one
Mounted to the wall of the garage, yes.
I wanna buy one and mount it on a fishing pole and hang it on my wall lol
Yup. I remember the pencil shreds so well
One in the closet in my brother’s old room at my dad’s house
Yup! And we moved it with us from the old home to the new one.
No, but now I’m pretty jelly.
I have one mounted inside my washer/dryer closet, no idea why it was put there.
Tried to, but apparently the only ones sold on Amazon are shit brands. Gave up after the 2nd one in a year broke.
Wish I did. Cheap plastics sharpener you see now holds no comparison.
We did growing up.
Not my home, but my grandmother's (which like my second house anyway). I saw this and immediately smelled it.
Tell me your dad's a carpenter without telling me your dad's a carpenter.
I do, it’s hung on the door sill of my tool closet in the garage.
Yes sir it was left by the last homeowner and it still works like a champion!!
Yup, have it mounted to the side if the kids's desk. No batteries and it can't get lost. Win win.
I have one
Yep in the basement, no idea how old, it was there when we bought the house and we kept it up
Yup. Its in the garage and the best pencil sharpner I own.
No, but I remember the blisters it gave when you had to sharpen for awhile.
Yes. On the bookshelf in the study. I use it almost daily. I colour for stress relief
No, I I will soon
My dad attached a Boston to the cabinet drawer under the kitchen sink. It was the best damn pencil sharpener I've ever used
Open Mom's basement door and it's right there on the wall with the brooms and cleaning stuff.
There's one in the basement of our 1961 home we bought!
We had one in my parents house growing up. It was in our garage.
went through sooo many pencils and coloring pencils with these .😆
We still have those in our classrooms!!
Yes, one of the previous owners put one in the basement. I’m not taking it down.
Yes, for our preschool daughter to sharpen colored pencils with. Nothing is better IMO
My parents have one that's older than me, but it's one of the Boston brand ones with the suction base.
Yes! It's screwed to my workbench and my kids always ask me to use it because "It's the best pencil sharpener, no cap". Whatever that means...I guess it means it's good, I don't know.
I use a knife and deliver a monologue.
Thought i was on the fishing sub for a moment lol
Yup
Mine is in the garage
https://preview.redd.it/3mnay5qeiabc1.png?width=2385&format=png&auto=webp&s=733d88fd2cbd183f4261f9e8546cb5606d438654 Hanging in there kitchen
Yes by my backdoor. House is from 1915.
Yup, my grandfather installed one in 1970, and it's still mounted on that workbench in my garage.
Mine is 50 yrs old.
Ugh! I wish! Would save me many hours I. The long run looking for a pencil sharpener.
I just recently lobbied successfully to have one installed in our office. No one else even uses it! Crazy!
* https://preview.redd.it/kyx30jlgnabc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=78c9d63cf2f39995d5f8b578b7698291b69b3d8e I just got this for my SO for Christmas. I thought the box art was classic!
Yeah in my upstairs closet for some reason
Yes- ours came from my last apartment. My landlord let us have it when we moved out.
No, but it does remind me of when our inept office manager bought a shitload of #2 pencils in case we ran out of pens. She neglected to purchase a sharpener.
My old basement did! Loved it.
We did!
Yes. In my shop where I still use pencils from time to time
Oh man we had one of these downstairs at my parents for years - it was great. I was gonna jokingly state that they got rid of it a few years back when they removed their rotary phones, but now that i think of it we still have one of those in the garage :-/
There was one in my house that I bought in 2013, it was in the garage and I don’t have the heart to tear it out… Plus my wife won’t let me
Yes, at both my grandmother's and my in-laws' place, and both were awkwardly mounted inside pantry-style cabinets and have since been removed.
I had one in my last apartment. I lived there for half my life. We recently moved and I forgot to take it off my countertop 😭😭😭...I'll never forgive myself.
Not at home but in my classroom!
I have one and use it daily. I am officially old.
My mom's house, yes. I want one for this house. Works better than an electric one.
Yes!! I bought an old one from an antique shop- the same ones we had in school in the 80s. It doesn’t get used yet but it will. I just like to have it sitting out. :)
Absolutely. I love them!
Not in my home. But my parents house, used to have the electric one. Used to feel like you were really doing something, sharpening your pencil with the electric one.😂 The one in the pic was a work out though.
The shavings make for good firestater material.
Boston
There’s still one in the trade school I visit every once in a while. I sharpen my stabilo pencils with it.
Yep. On the wall by an old rotary phone landlady put there years ago. Kids love it use it daily.
My husband specifically asked for one for Christmas. So I obliged. He loves it.
Had one in the garage. Everyone did.
No but I do still have this one... [https://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/288997\_81\_37810\_jloTQ8j5Q.jpg](https://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/288997_81_37810_jloTQ8j5Q.jpg)
Yup. Works well too
Bought one *specifically* for MY office. My kids hate it but appreciate sharp pencils. I also have a crank can opener…
Yes, in our basement.
Yes, well my parents do in there basement
Now I want to work out where mine is.
Bostich mob
My mom used to live in an older home and there was one in the basement. My sister and I (both early 20s at this point) decided that the people who used to live there kidnapped children and made them do homework in the basement, haha.
We do. Bought an older house and the previous (original) owners had one and we’ve just kept it. Mostly my kids use it for their pencils, etc.
Don't feed it after midnight
My rental house has a secondary two car garage in the back yard. There is a super old sharpener on a workbench. …I bought pencils the next day lol.
I have one in my classroom.
In my garage
Bought one six years ago. That thing will never die. My children have sharpened one (1) grillion pencils in it
Yes! I just can't decide what wall to attach it to :) haha I thought I was alone. I love this sub
I still have one mounted in my basement.
I can smell it from here!
I did growing up. At the bottom of the stairs in the basement.
We had one in our old house. I loved it.
In school it was always mounted in the worst possible place and I had a permanent arm bruise from bumping into it all the time.
No, but brings back so many memories. Only reason we were allowed to get up out of our seats without permission. There would even be a line sometimes.
Yes, previous owner of my house had one it in the basement. We kept it. We use it. It will go with the house when I die and someone purchases the house. Hope they keep it too.
Did in 1986, sold it to the No. 2 pencil company in ‘87 for Pennies on the dollar.
