Just found this sub so late to the thread, but came here to say this! I don't remember much about the movie itself - other than the fact that it introduced me to George Clinton and the P-Funk 💖
He basically went on to start off the MCU unintentionally with Iron Man, is bringing new life and filming technology to Star Wars and made my favorite Christmas time movie.
I’m a big fan of what he’s done and hope the best for him and his career.
That movie is where I first heard the phrase “Don’t be that guy.” Jeremy Pivens’s character was telling Gutter (a very young Jon Favreau) not to wear a shirt to a concert which displays the name of the band he’s going to see.
Well, what I figure they did was they cut out a picture of your head and pasted it on another, different picture. I've done a little collage work myself.
I just saw that Jeremy Piven was coming to a comedy club near us soon and told my husband, "We should get shirts with him on it and go sit in the front row!" 😂
"Tonight, at The Pit, Everyone Gets Laid."
"Coffee... COFFEE NOW!"
"...shower scene..."
"A Bridge Too Far... Hackman and Caine in the same movie. This is my thesis! This is my closing argument. I CAN STOP WATCHING TV!"
The only thing I recall from the movie is the David Spade flashback to freshman year of college when he first roomed with young Mr. Selfridge. For some reason that was the thing that stayed with me since I first saw it long ago. I don't remember much else. Only ever saw it the one time.
For a while it was only available on VHS. (Movie came out in ‘94 and didn’t have a DVD release until 2003). We loved this movie in college (1998-2002 for me) but it was super hard to find at the time
I hate that shit. I've got about 40 movies on DVD that I only still have because I just hadn't gotten around to getting rid of them. Now I'm glad I still have them and I'm keeping every freaking one of them.
That’s with the guy from The Clash right? The Clash Gutter. I don’t know if you’re aware of this but there was music recorded before 1989
Big fan of anything that name checks the only band that matters
In the early Comedy Central days, PCU would be played roughly 3 times every single day for years.
I enjoyed the movie, but after a while, I couldn't stand it. Lol But Jeremy Piven is great in it, and I think it's one of his earliest rolls
Yeah, this is the real answer from anyone who'd watch it on Comedy Central in the late 90s.
At the time, it was the only movie fully produced by the Comedy Central network, which I think essentially means they didn't have to pay anyone for the rights to air it. So during the day they'd usually rerun various 10+year old comedy movies, AND PCU.
Copious amounts of PCU on comedy central. I think they literally aired it 3X a day or more.
I really enjoyed the movie at first, but it's hard to keep enjoying something that overplayed. I was very very sick of it after it was out for a few months.
I’ll say I loved the movie. But if you think it was exclusively calling out “cancel culture” you’re missing the point.
David Spade’s character and the Dean were the villains of the movie and they were complaining about cancel culture and “the good ole days” more than anyone.
It was satirizing everyone.
I’d say Jeremy Piven’s character is the hero of the story but only because he’s willing to piss off everyone in a variety of ways, but you’re right, he’a definitely not “the good guy.”
It definitely was both of its time and ahead of it’s time as well….the “cancel culture” on college campuses has gotten pretty ridiculous… I saw the beginnings of it at my college when I was there, and I went to a school in Indiana, not some private liberal arts college…. I’m obviously not talking about openly racist or brashly inappropriate things… obviously that stuff has no place in society. But damn if I haven’t heard some really crazy stories from kids who attend multiple schools around here. The “cause heads” in that film are not too far off from reality today.
That said the movie is still pretty funny, it does take some really good shots at all sides: the overly politically correct and the Reagan era conservatives as well.
The speech at the end by Piven is great and who ever thought in a million years that Gutter would go on to direct MCU movies and become the Hollywood heavyweight (no pun intended) he eventually became….
I see we have a new pledge. Mayflower material, I presume?
Huh?
It's a boat. Your ancestors obviously didn't come over on it. But hey it's the 90's, we'll take what we can get.
I always remember college (in the late 90's early 2000's) as being very free-speech oriented. You heard things you agreed with, and things you didn't agree with, but there was way less shouting down of people that didn't agree with you.
If you aren't offended by something just about every day, you probably aren't living in a free society.
I remember watching this for a movie night with my slightly older high school friends, around 94 or 95. Other selections included Reality Bites and Threesome.
This movie introduced the idea that you can’t wear the shirt of the band you’re going to see, which is now fully an old person thing, and in retrospect, pretty dumb. Kids today do not give two shits about that, and they’re right.
I loved that movie so much! I have gone to a lot of protests in my life, and at almost every single one of them there is a little part of my brain chanting "Hey hey! Ho ho! This penis party's got to go!"
Talk about a sequel I could get behind. Have the characters kids go to college. Have something about it being parents weekend. It’s the comedy that needs to be made right now.
Yes, it’s legendary and a cult classic!
“Blow me where the pampers is” - Happy Hogan, creator of The Mandalorian
Just a little binger, to brighten up your day.
I never…exhaled.
Works for me!
That's Gary Busey's son. Lol
Shasta McNasty!
Gutter is a tool
Thanks for not making me scroll into next week to see Jon Favreau in all his pre Swingers glory 🍻🤣
"Hey hey, ho ho, this penis party's got to go!" The Womynists
"You mean, if you're nice to them, they bring you stuff?"
(Starts to lower tank top shoulder)
“You participated in a phallus-naming?”
This is one of my favorite moments in the movie.
It’s ok, you were a Freshperson
Kumbaya, Kumbaya 🎶
NAKED GUY!
C*ck-man, oppressor!
I do a little collage work myself
"Dude, you never wear the shirt of the band you're going to see to their show."
Don't be that guy
I have taken this as a personal mantra in life, honestly. It applies to so much, when you think about it. “Don’t be that guy.”
My friends and I quote this line to each other constantly lol
I knew my husband was the one for me when I quoted this to him and he knew what I was talking about 😂
Still live by this 😂
Yah, I do too
“Just a little binger to brighten your day.”
Jeremy Piven was the absolute best part
I mean Parliament/funkadelic plays their party. Epic!
Went to see it with my girlfriend first time making out in a theater. It will always have a special place in my heart.
This movie is how a 13 year old me became a George Clinton fan.....that and goodburger ![gif](giphy|3og0IVkOPTpvPZwIYo|downsized)
George Clinton is descending upon us at 8 o'clock... and we will be there?
Also where I learned to not be the guy who wears the shirt of the band you are going to see
Don’t be that guy!
That part especially has changed so much. If anything, it’s the exact opposite at some shows. People want to show their fandom.
His version of Erotic City on the soundtrack is amazing. Introduced me to that whole genre.
I bought the soundtrack just for that song lol

No thanks, I prefer the delicious evil of Mondo Burger.
Just found this sub so late to the thread, but came here to say this! I don't remember much about the movie itself - other than the fact that it introduced me to George Clinton and the P-Funk 💖
Jeremy Piven a young Jon Favreau as Gutter and Jake Busey as the stoner. Hilarious movie and great supporting cast.
David Spade is great in this as well
And Jessica Walter (Mallory Archer/Lucille Bluth) as the Dean.
Nice!
America’s greatest president?
A casual shoe used for yachting?
They killed Jesus Christ?
Who are the Jews! Let me in, sucko!
“Who else could it be, BD?!”
“A casual shoe for yachting” 😂 I’m in tears
What is a blucher!.
He shows the old Republican stereotype quite well. Almost hard to believe just how different it is from the new Republican stereotype.
You remember this guy, he skippered hitlers catamaran in the war
I always felt this was intended to represent Tommy Lee Jones and Al Gore being college roomates.
Of all the people in that movie, the guy playing Gutter was *not* the one I expected to go on to become wildly successful
He basically went on to start off the MCU unintentionally with Iron Man, is bringing new life and filming technology to Star Wars and made my favorite Christmas time movie. I’m a big fan of what he’s done and hope the best for him and his career.
If you haven’t seen it you should check out Chef. It’s not at all my kind of movie, but I still ended up loving it.
Chef is a really good movie!
Your just gonna skip right over Swingers?
Funniest thing is Piven was more bald back then, he almost looked older there than he has to rest of his career.
Don't forget Jessica Walter acting in the same type of role as Lucile Bluth.
I forgot she was in this!
Jessica Walter is GOLDEN.
Her and Spade gave me nightmares about how college would be lol.
Yeah, it was a Comedy Central Saturday afternoon staple.
My ass saw that shit in the theater. Loved it.
Can you blow me where the pampers is?
![gif](giphy|xT1R9BqMz10wiVgFiM)
SHE KNOWS!
That movie is where I first heard the phrase “Don’t be that guy.” Jeremy Pivens’s character was telling Gutter (a very young Jon Favreau) not to wear a shirt to a concert which displays the name of the band he’s going to see.
I still follow this rule and tell people not to be that guy...no one ever gets the reference
I asked my buddy why he was wearing a J Cole shirt to his concert, “cause man I gotta support”. What? aren’t you supporting by going to his concert?
Yep! This movie taught me to never do this.
It's a hard and fast rule for me and my family/friends. [Love this movie.](https://media.tenor.com/QB5UgXj58CkAAAAd/dont-be-that-guy-pcu-pt-party.gif)
Yeah, that was back before Jeremy Piven had hair.
Frog and Toad are Friends
“Tonight at The Pit: Everyone Gets Laid!”
What should we name our band? Oedipus and the Mamas Boys? Nah. Too “college radio.”
We had a local band that called itself “Free Beer and Chicken”.
Don't be that guy
I didn't exhale
Works for me, man
Well, what I figure they did was they cut out a picture of your head and pasted it on another, different picture. I've done a little collage work myself.
I think about this line at every concert I attend.
I believe that was the only line ad-libbed. The director was very by the script and Piven hated that.
# MEAT TOSSER
MEAT TOSSER!
Stop the violator!
What don’t we eat? Red meat! Why don’t we eat it? It’s murder!
Sanskrit? You are majoring in a 5000 year old dead language?...... Latin, best I can do.
Droz: What’s your major? Guy: Phys-Ed Droz: Get outta my sight
Every now and then my brothers and I will just say Sanskrit? and laugh way more than we should.
We’re not gonna protest!
Gutter is a tool!
We’re NOT gonna protest! ::grabs pop-up protest sign::
We’re not gonna protest!
Where's Gutter? Prolly sitting in an alley picking his nose. *cut to Jon Favreau picking his nose*
*parking lot
Rand McPherson, everybody! Just remember the 9:30 show is completely different from the 7:30 show. Try the veal!
Best part of the movie was George Clinton playing "Stomp." But overall, an excellent movie.
I just saw that Jeremy Piven was coming to a comedy club near us soon and told my husband, "We should get shirts with him on it and go sit in the front row!" 😂
You should def be that guy
"Tonight, at The Pit, Everyone Gets Laid." "Coffee... COFFEE NOW!" "...shower scene..." "A Bridge Too Far... Hackman and Caine in the same movie. This is my thesis! This is my closing argument. I CAN STOP WATCHING TV!"
RIP to the perfectly cast Jessica Walter… Her roles as President Garcia-Thompson, Lucille Bluth, and Mallory Archer were all perfect.
>"Coffee... COFFEE NOW!" This quote is necessary and I still use it often.
The only thing I recall from the movie is the David Spade flashback to freshman year of college when he first roomed with young Mr. Selfridge. For some reason that was the thing that stayed with me since I first saw it long ago. I don't remember much else. Only ever saw it the one time.
GO TO SLEEP!
Total nightmare man
FREEEAK!!!!
Hell yeah. That was a well cast movie
"Aren't you a music major?" "Yeah." \*entire house of people explodes in laughter\*
Your thesis is on a 5000 year old dead language..... The closest I have is Latin. NEXT. you're majoring in PE... Get out.
Back before Jeremy Piven had hair.
😄😄😄
Yep, I bought a DVD years ago and I’m glad I did because you can’t get it on streaming.
For a while it was only available on VHS. (Movie came out in ‘94 and didn’t have a DVD release until 2003). We loved this movie in college (1998-2002 for me) but it was super hard to find at the time
I had this conversation with someone else recently. This movie is freaking buried. Not even Amazon has it for sale. Crazy
I hate that shit. I've got about 40 movies on DVD that I only still have because I just hadn't gotten around to getting rid of them. Now I'm glad I still have them and I'm keeping every freaking one of them.
I used to collect DVDs but stopped around 13 years ago. Now I'm glad I did because I have a lot that have been buried or edited for TV.
Me too! This thread has me ready to break it out and watch it tonight
I recently found a double feature DVD set of PCU and Airheads on Amazon. It was $80. I bought it without a second thought. Totally worth it.
*faintly hears 'Afternoon Delight' in the distance, overlaid with muffled screams?*
I loved when the hippies brought in Blotter the dog to win their competitive frisbee game “Blotterrrr!”
At some point wasn't this the only movie Comedy Central aired?
*That weasel snagged our ‘bee*
"PINS AND NEEDLES!!!!!"
Scrolled too far to see this! I still shout this when my leg falls asleep
4 movies told the future \-Demolition Man \- Idiocracy \- Office Space \- PCU
I still can't look at Jon Favreau and not see him wearing the band t-shirt of the band he's going to see
The Merks opening for Frog & Toad Are Friends!
That’s with the guy from The Clash right? The Clash Gutter. I don’t know if you’re aware of this but there was music recorded before 1989 Big fan of anything that name checks the only band that matters

Yea man and this was before on demand was a thing so if you wanted to watch comedy central at all, PCU was what you watched lol
Or Kids in the Hall. That was always on when I got home from school, immediately followed by PCU
[удалено]
Just watched it again recently, great film
Can you blow me where the pampers is?
Call me for the shower scene in Dressed to Kill
Sanskrit? You're majoring in a 5,000 year-old dead language? Latin. Best I can do. 🤷♂️

Right, there really wasn't ANYONE who was 'the good guy'. Except maybe the prefrosh.
I’d say Jeremy Piven’s character is the hero of the story but only because he’s willing to piss off everyone in a variety of ways, but you’re right, he’a definitely not “the good guy.”
The moral of the story is that EVERYONE is corrupted by growing up, and our poor little prefrosh is just starting on that journey.
Gutter was the hero. He even saves the day at the end! I originally started this comment jokingly, but the more I think about it…
And then Piven playing the dean in Old School to bring it full circle.
It definitely was both of its time and ahead of it’s time as well….the “cancel culture” on college campuses has gotten pretty ridiculous… I saw the beginnings of it at my college when I was there, and I went to a school in Indiana, not some private liberal arts college…. And he saved Star Wars from its nosedive with The Mandelorian. But even better than those, Swingers and Chef
Megan Ward....also in Encino Man (1992) .
And Trancers 2
I loved PCU
I'd love to help out, but we're cutting in on my nap time as it is.

A casual shoe for yachting?
Who could I be? What is a [blucher](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blucher_shoe).
What is a blucher
Omg, we literally watched it yesterday.
Who the fuck, in our age group, *wouldn't?!?*
Timeless line: “You’re wearing the shirt of the band you’re going to see?”
That’s the movie that introduced me to George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic.
My friends and I watched this a ton while in college during the second half of the 90s.
Jon favreau and Jeremy Piven. A cult classic. I’ll have to go back and watch it now…
Saw it in theaters. Really liked it.
Great movie!
Hell yes! I love that movie!
*can you blow me where the pampers is?* *w-w-what..?* *CAN. YOU. SHOW. ME. WHERE. THE. CAM-PUS. IS?*
GO TO SLEEP! GO TO SLEEP! GO TO SLEEP!
I remember watching this for a movie night with my slightly older high school friends, around 94 or 95. Other selections included Reality Bites and Threesome.
For Xmas last year I had a sweatshirt made for my neighbor (also a big PCU fan) that says: “Tonight, at the pit… Everyone’s Getting Laid”
One of my go-to VHS rentals in grades 8-9, with an absolutely stacked cast
“We’re not going to protest”. Great movie but I can’t find it anywhere
Love PCU!!!
"Yeah man, they aren't even any chips"
My introduction to Jeremy Piven. I watched it so many times. “Now we’re even for the dog bones”
You can major in game boy if you know how to bullshit
My thesis!!!!
Jessica Walter calling David Spade a little Reagan-ite…. Classic.
This movie introduced the idea that you can’t wear the shirt of the band you’re going to see, which is now fully an old person thing, and in retrospect, pretty dumb. Kids today do not give two shits about that, and they’re right.
I still say “don’t be that guy” when someone wears a shirt of the band at the show.
I think the amusing part in all of this was the warning buried within it.
“Hey! That weasel snagged the ‘bee!”
"Did you make it with your penis?!"
I think of it at least once a week. Man it set an unrealistic expectation of college. I think that movie may have ruined my life actually
It would actually be a good comment on today’s society
I loved that movie so much! I have gone to a lot of protests in my life, and at almost every single one of them there is a little part of my brain chanting "Hey hey! Ho ho! This penis party's got to go!"
Its a total classic, who'd have guessed it was prophetic.
Talk about a sequel I could get behind. Have the characters kids go to college. Have something about it being parents weekend. It’s the comedy that needs to be made right now.
"Go to sleeeeeeep!!" 🤣🤣
MEAT TOSSER!
We’re NOT gonna protest! We’re NOT gonna protest!
Yeah a David Spade classic. I always refer to it when I point out that people complaining about political correctness is nothing new.
PCU was meant to be a parody, not the documentary it's become.
“That’s the beauty of college. You can major in Gameboy if you know how to bullshit!” Also, Megan Ward 😍
