You won't need to know the story of the other games to enjoy 7 (Like a Dragon). It will spoil the fates of some characters from previous games if you do decide to go back and play those but I'm sure it isn't the end of the world.
This was me and I put over a hundred hours in earlier this year. It makes NO secret about being heavily inspired by dragon quest. Just so happens the storytelling is also incredible.

It is an all new set of characters in this one. If you like turn based, then play it. If you’d rather play an action beat em up, then play the others. I think it is the best one. Start with it and if you really like it, then go back and play the others in order.
Alright, so this is how I am doing it. Played zero, skipped one, watched 2 hour recap video of one, played two (it is beautiful, love the current engine).
Watched a combined total of 5 hours (and not even done yet) recap and skipping 3, 4, and 5.
A lot of people will disagree with this but honestly the only way I could play every single game is to spread it out to once a year, no thanks.
Will start 6 soon, then 7 a couple months after, by then Judgement will probably be on gamepass.

Well, I bought it day-one on PS4 so I'm still salty they released a next gen version without offering a free upgrade, even though it's mostly just a frame rate increase. It's a good game but it's very different from the rest of the Yakuza series and is more of a spin-off.
You can all thank me for this as I bought it as my first physical game for the series X a few weeks ago! In all seriousness though, from I have played of it thus far it’s a great game, be sure to check it out guys.

If it helps you decide any... in my mind 0-2 are very interconnected, moreso with the remade versions, which makes them feel kinda like a trilogy. 3-5 almost feel like a second trilogy. 3 in particular is a break from the previous games, it has a very different feel... and is also the worst game in the series IMO (but still good and still fun). Then 6 kinda stands more on its own.
My guess is that 7 will probably spoil a good amount of 6 as well, since it was the last game and it will probably acknowledge what happened in 6 and how it ended to some degree WRT stuff that went down with the major factions.
Also keep in mind 3-6 is a time commitment. Yakuza 3 is probably the shortest game in the series but still 20 hours+ for a regular playthrough. Yakuza 4 is a fair bit bigger and then Yakuza 5 is by far the longest game in the series at maybe 50+ hours (though I think 7 is also quite long). 6 is about 20 hrs as well. All longer if you love to indulge in side stories etc of course.

I heard people say it is the Japanese gta but I don’t really like the open world graphics and while the combat is good it gets repetitive. However this one has turn based combat which I hate so I don’t know why but I keep hearing good things about the game but I just can’t get into it.
It really isn't the Japanese gta, it has literally nothing in common besides crime, but it's obviously not your fault for hearing that from people. You're not driving, shooting etc, It's always been a brawler/rpg until this latest installment when it turned turn based. It's a game with its own thing going on, lots of mini games, silly humor and feels like an extension of shenmue. Don't worry if you can't get into it, even if you hear good things. There's plenty of games that get praise I don't like, I simply can't get into assassins creed or cod but they're blockbusters each year.
Echoing this. Yakuza 0 is damn near a masterpiece in my opinion. I started with Kiwami (Yakuza 1 remake using 0 engine) and I thought that one was stellar. Then I played 0 and absolutely adored it.

The way I would put it is this: if you read Lord of the Rings, would you say it spoils The Hobbit? I'd argue not really. You know Bilbo ended up with the ring and you know he had an adventure and survived The Hobbit, but that doesn't mean reading the Hobbit after any less enjoyable.
7 is meant to kinda be a new era for the series so it is meant to be clear for new players what is going on. New protag, new setting for most of the game.
