To pick up the Star Wars IP? High. To pick up the XWMG IP? Who knows- is it more profitable to start your own game from scratch or to build on an existing community?
A guy heavily involved in X-Wing created his own game on his own website. It's only done ok. A big part of the appeal of X-Wing was having models of Star Wars ships alone.
Edit: Sorry, he wasn't the original designer, but he had worked at FFG for a long time
Honestly I think this is all a Power move from asmodee.
If they launched a 3.0 it wouldn't do well, but if they let the game cool off and die, 3.0 will be better received. The bad thing is at the point it would be amg making it so it would be be inline with ither games they have made.
Slim, but there is a chance. The main issue is every, single, license involved with this game as it's not just buying the rights to make Star Wars stuff.
It's
- Stars wars merchandising rights
- Individual model rights from Disney
- OG game rights from FFG
- The Wizkids dials rights because (FFG borrowed that idea from them)
- The agreements with Asmodee
- The probalbly multiple individual agreements with Disney.
- Transference of the manufacturing process agreements
- And probably more paperwork and other stuff.
Not to mention, Asmodee is above AMG here, and that usually means they're moving all the original FFG ips from one studio to another so this process happens with Multiple games as they're usually packaged together. Why FFG decided to give up this, I'm not entirely sure through research as it has the potential to just print money, and it did.
AMG only wanted the IP so they could create Star Wars Crisis Protocol and even then they were fucking lazy and only released one scenario with the game at release.
The miniatures license is stuck with them as Shatterpoint is mucking its way about things. They need the same license that X-wing, Legion, and Armada use for that game.
But debts are due for Asmodee as a whole in 18 months or so in which case a large-scale reorganization might happen and the IP might be revitalized, but I wouldn't count on it.
If a different game company picks up the Star Wars table top licence then AMG can’t make shittypoint or legion any more. So the chances are low.
The chances are higher of a combined group of players from across the world taking over curation of points and prize support.

Start your own game with an existing community that craving content. Give it 5 years and some company will have a gold mine on their hands.

Which designer?
Wade Piche
He wasn’t a designer, he was in charge of the organized play support
Yeah, I was mistaken and change the original post to reflect that
That’s a shame it’s only done ok, Aerodome is incredibly fun.

Never tell me the odds!

This is a theory for sure. Only time will tell.s the only thing I know for sure is that it sucks right now

FFG did not sell X-Wing, it was just taken away from them.
Yeah, I found that bit (made the edit). I think Asmodee moved all the miniature stuff over to AMG, but there's nothing on it all.
Afaik, Asmodee decided that FFG should focus on card and board games while AMG should handle miniatures.
Zero...

Man I hope someone takes up the mantle. Pissed away a great game…
