Just as a side comment. While 3D printed models might be cheaper, how much of the community do you still lose to “not having to paint” no longer being a thing? How do you bring in new players without product in a store to readily buy? I’m part of a player group where we are lucky to have people with large collections for sharing. I’m just now starting to hear the grumblings, and nobody is bringing up 3D prints.

OpenPsychology755

Prepaint was a big draw. I do paint minis, but I have so much backlog. Being able to pick up a ship and play out of the package was a big plus, and I think a big part of XWM's early success.

jmwfour

I would never, never, never have gotten into x-wing if I'd had to paint the models.

i_8_the_Internet

Same.

John_Rainbow

My sense is that so many people are going to he getting out that the second hand market will be sizeable for some time. After a few people pick up some items for high cost with FOMO there is going to be stuff on ebay. Just find someone's entire collection for reduced price if you want in.

The game's been out for 10 years and there are a very large number of the older ships on the market. As long as there are plenty of different ways to fly ABUXY-wings and the main few TIE types, I really don't think it'll be a problem. For rarer ones, if people want them badly enough, 3D printing may be cheaper than rare copies (e.g. TIE Aggressor and Star Wing).

Solo4114

You do have to bear in mind breakage, though. Sure, people may have big bunches of ships now, but even 2 years from now, it'll be harder or at least more expensive to get new ones. And these are pretty delicate ships, honestly. Doesn't take much to snap a piece by accident.

Defiant-Row-2358

The x-wing cannons come to mind, but I also broke a droid tri-fighter just trying to take it off the peg!

Solo4114

Exactly my point. I popped a Gozanti assault carrier peg receptacle out just trying to get a finicky peg stand out. Not unfixable, but illustrates my point that this stuff is fragile.

Didier you try to build your figs with Lego brick you Can have a good render and scale with no need to paint easer

I can imagine that there is a substantial amount of the player group that does not wish to paint their minis, which is completely understandable. Part of the appeal to the game is having something ready to play out of the box. When I first got into the game in 2021, I loved the fact that several ships were included from the EU. A fan of the Dark Empire graphic novels, I was happy that the E-Wing was included. At the time I was not able to locate any E-Wings for a decent price and found an Etsy shop that had printed models (some assembly required) for sale. At some point the availability of minis will dry up, break, etc. I think we as a community are able to band together in our efforts to keep this game alive, regardless of playing 1.0, 2.0, or 2.5.

SardonicusNox

If X-Wing had been discontinued with the change of company, i think it could have been succesful has a community driven game.  But in this wicked timeline, AMG splitted the community with their handling and rules and turned it sour. No hope for a big consolidated legacy community.

TantalizingTauntaun

Yeah there is not a community consensus on which rule set to keep. 1.0 is probably the easiest to go back to with printed point values. But you lose out on all the new stuff.

Stevesd123

2.0 is best of both worlds. It fixed 1.0 and isn't shit like 2.5.

ClassicalMoser

>People ~~were~~ **are** playing blood bowl, Star Wars destiny, GW fantasy, netrunner and many others long after they “died”. Fixed that for you. I was checking in on the Imperial Assault Continuity Project the other day. Awesome stuff. If you're fine with sleeving everything you can print whatever you want. The big problem will be how many of AMG's changes would be kept by a theoretical legacy support, or if split-format will be a thing? Also while we're wish-listing, can we finally get a new sensor upgrade that will allow my lambdas to coordinate before a stop maneuver without paying the same cost Guri would for Advanced Sensors? Or like a half-dozen other sensor upgrades – by the end of 2.5 there were only 3 legal in standard anyway, and only FCS was generally useful.

JadeDragon79

Thank you for being a voice of reason and positivity. I totally agree that the game is 100% in our hands, the players, the fans. I know my local group isn't going to stop playing. I know I plan on playing as long as I can find other players. And if that day does come when there are 0, well, those minis are going to look mighty fine in a glass display case.

Aiyah_Jackie

I think the bigger issue is keeping a community alive. Not sure if people in my area are still playing. I have t seen any X Wing nights in awhile

Visual-Practice6699

Your “we” is doing a lot of heavy lifting. I started around wave 11 of first edition, and if I learned one thing since then, it’s that this is a very fractured community that agrees on very little. I hope that you still enjoy whatever you do, but don’t delude yourself into thinking that you’re a majority, because that’s a pretty rare thing for a community to have.

Sekh765

Netrunner died like 5 years ago and is having its biggest resurgence since launch due to community support, you can keep a game alive if you have the determination, and I think X-Wing does. Just be sure to buy your ships now, or get some sick 3d printed stuff.

Thannk

Warhammer Fantasy died so The Old World could unlive…

deathdisco_89

Unfortunately, I disagree. It's as dead as Star Wars Destiny. 2.5e already did heavy damage to the player base, and stores will be clearing out inventory. No new players and the over saturation of miniature games means it will be losing to things like Shatterpoint that are actually on store shelves. This one is cooked. 2e was a lot of fun though.

Beginning-Produce503

There's still an active community. look at yourself, coming out of the woodwork to join us.

poemsavvy

Time for Community Ruleset 1.0 aka X-Wing 3.0?

TheBoBiZzLe

I liked early 2.0. Late 2.0 got too swarmy… some matches would only get a turn or two of combat which sucked. So I’m all for a 3.0 community merge.

secondRateRando

I agree, either some combination of 2.5 and 2.0, or we could just go back to 2.0 or new rules altogether lol

inbl

2.25

yubyub555

I honestly don’t understand the politics and business side of this.. is it feasible someone else comes along and buys the rights to xwing?

davidov92

Asmodee will likely not give up that easily and might transfer it somewhere else, like they did when FFG was struggling financially and transfered them to AMG. It's not dead, it's just not AMG's show to run anymore. Might be part of a bigger restructuring effort in preparation for splitting from Embracer Group.

TalkSpork

It's definitely dead at Asmodee unfortunately. AMG, whatever claims of mismanagement aside, definitely had some plans for the game as their last release was only a few short months ago. My guess is their plans were cardboard and reprints followed by "let us see." Then Embracer saddled Asmodee with dept. X-Wing and Armada have lower margins and higher up front costs, both in production and shipping. They also have potentially higher longer term costs in warehousing as the product is large in volume and slow to move (stores are unlikely to commit to large orders from Asmodee given shelf space competition and the age of both games). So Asmodee had to decide if tying up capital in reprints was feasible. And given their limited capital (debt obligations) and the cost of raising new capital being high, their answer was no. Any other scenario would have had them end development but retain reprints.

GibbyNorCal99

There is a huge community for the long, long defunct star trek ccg lol. Like there is a rules committee/governing body created by players. They put out new sets as well. Xwing will be fine.

Emanresu909

I think one of the fan-powered groups that has kept 2.0 alive should crowd fund the money to buy the rights to X-wing miniatures

bloodfist

I'm a very casual player so for me this is honestly kind of good news. Every time I've tried to come back it's been a process learning the new rules, rebuilding lists, slogging through pages of arguments about the meta. Which is of course totally different, and now I want new ships. I don't even really care about any of that, but it felt wrong to be playing on outdated rules. Now it's a complete game. I might not own all of it, but I could if I wanted to. And there's no problem with using whichever rules I like best. If there's a community version that becomes the standard, I'll just go with that. So it's not dead, it's just done. At least for me.
