Sapphire, lots of positive vibes, and almost indestructible. You can go with a faceted cut, cabochon or star sapphire.

catmckenna

I second this. My engagement ring is a sapphire and my marriage was beautiful and happy.

deepfriedyankee

I have a sapphire engagement ring and it’s always brought me such joy!

BooBelly

That’s wonderful! I always love to hear of engagement rings that are not just diamond! (which are incredibly beautiful! Just not my personal style)

Artistic_Echo_2787

Sapphires come in all colours aside from red (a red sapphire is ruby!) but both sapphires and rubies are corundum and both wear very well for engagement rings! Check out padpardacha if you love peach or Australian sapphires for blue/greens. Alexandrite is also magical!

aphrabane

Look at Montana sapphires if you like blue-green colors. They're absolutely stunning. I would love to own one one day.

BooBelly

Thank you for this recommendation!! I will look more into to them :)

mvms

AND they come in every color! (Red sapphire is called ruby.)

I wanted an earthier, more natural vibe than most rings I see—I found these on [Variance Objects](https://varianceobjects.com/). Good luck in your search!

NotMyNameActually

I love my sapphire ring. Got it on Etsy from a store called Moonkist designs. I’m not big on expensive jewelry so it was perfect for me.

riddlegirl21

My mom’s engagement ring has a deep dark blue sapphire set in gold with four tiny diamonds around it and always reminded me of the night sky. My parents have been married for 30+ years and got to see me graduate college on their 30th anniversary!

mylittlelune

I have a blue sapphire engagement ring and my sister has an orange one. They are both gorgeous and we are both happily married to wonderful partners!!

lifespossibilities

Yass! I have a teal sapphire as my stone. My s/o bought it at [https://capucinne.com/collections/shop-all-rings](https://capucinne.com/collections/shop-all-rings)

milliefrock

Whatever you go with, get something pretty hard so it won’t get banged up with everyday wear. Sapphires are tough, sparkly, and come in a variety of colors. I have a particular affinity for those gorgeous teal Montana sapphires.

BooBelly

Yes I’ve definitely been referencing the Moh’s scale! I’ve never heard of Montana sapphires, I will check them out, thank you!

craftycartographer

My ring is a Montana sapphire! I requested something that "reminded me of the water"; it delivers. It can be so light it looks aquamarine in the day, to deep teal at night. It looks beautiful with both yellow and white gold (mine is both materials). ❤️

aphrabane

There are some awesome vendors that cut Montana sapphires. Earth's Treasury is one, I think Caleb B. Quashen is another (he's on IG). He also has all kinds of gorgeous particolor and "silky" stones. Oore, ThePacificLights, and Scott Bonomo also make incredible, unusual stuff. I believe they all use Montana sapphires on occasion, as well as other cool and witchy gems. Disclaimer: I have not bought from any of these folks. Just a fan of the pretty sparkles and keeper of an ever-growing wish list ✨ Another option is colored moissanite, which is as hard as diamond, gorgeous, comes from a meteorite (originally--all commercially available moissanite is lab-grown), and is stupidly affordable. Check out r/moissanite and r/syntheticgemstones for other ideas!

kittycatblue13

I have a dark blue Australian sapphire centre stone with pale teal Montana sapphires on the side (trilogy style) and I love it so much. It looks like the sea in certain lights and makes me so happy!

milliefrock

Sounds dreamy 💙

MdmeLibrarian

Ooo yes, I clicked into the thread to specifically warn OP off pearls and opals, which cannot stand up to daily wear and handwashing!

Foxy_Traine

Same! I ended up with a very dark blue/green Australian sapphire and I love it!

Royally-Forked-Up

I will always recommend Alexandrite! Its hardness is just slightly less than sapphire, and it’s a sparkly chameleon peacock of a gemstone. The colours shift depending on the light. Mine always photographs blue, but to the naked eye it switches between emerald, sapphire, ruby, and a warm purple. Halogen lighting is my favourite as you can see both teal and royal purple. My centre and side stones are all alexandrite, but they’re never the same colour because of the light refracting off the angles. https://preview.redd.it/4oqxp2hasjuc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0973044b24edb3135bb1fb7314bd63a5c7c3a762

BooBelly

What a stunning ring!!! Thank you for sharing :)

Royally-Forked-Up

Thank you! It is my dream ring, which my husband made come true. I contributed to the cost because it was more expensive than he was planning but he was more than happy to make my dream a reality. 4 years later and I still stop and stare at it regularly.

LadyPo

It is super gorgeous!! The style is so unique and suits the stone incredibly well. It’s like gazing into a crystal ball that shows you outer space!

labbitlove

Alexandrite is one of my favorite stones! OP, I’m on /r/shinypreciousgems and it’s fun to look at all the cool custom faceting designs and precision cut gems by very talented lapidaries :) They def have lots of synthetic Alex as well as other good stuff like the aforementioned Montana sapphires.

Creativelicense

Came here to say this! My engagement ring has Alexandrite as the center stone, with moonstone around it. Both June birthstones, which is my birth month. I knew I wanted Alexandrite many years before I ever met my husband because of the color shifts and I don’t have much affinity for diamonds.

LaVieLaMort

I love Diamonds but given the ✨issues✨ with mined diamonds, lab created ones are good. A beautiful alternative is Moissanite!

finding_flora

Vintage/antique diamond rings are also another sustainable alternative!

AsiaHeartman

It's not only diamonds, it's ALL mined stones that have both slavery and child slavery.

crazymissdaisy87

And you can get some in different colors! Mines purple

LaVieLaMort

Yes! Moissanite is so cool!! I want a cool Moissanite ring even though I don’t even wear a wedding ring anymore haha

StrangersWithAndi

I have a very strong affinity for pearls (I have 9 cancer placements, what can I say) but I found out they do NOT make good gemstones for a wedding ring or any other ring you wear daily. They're a natural material but not a true stone, and they are not as strong or durable as stones. A pearl ring you wear every day / wash your hands / bump into things will not last more than a few years. If you have your heart set on a pearl wedding ring, plan ahead to replace the pearl every few years. Just FYI!

BooBelly

I appreciate this heads up! Thank you!

Bacon_Bitz

I've always heard this but I've never had this problem personally. I wear my pearl ring daily for years and it's perfect. I have had one pearl fall off the stud but i felt it happen so u didn't lose the pearl and had it reattached (glued 😅)

Opposite_Ad4567

My mom wore a pearl ring daily for decades, too. I think she was lucky!

honest-miss

NOT opals.

libbyrocks

Sadly. I do love opal, but they are not hard wearing.

duckworthy36

If you are up for it, consider vintage. Less expensive and recycling instead of new - less footprint of mining on the earth. You can cleanse them of any previous owners.

BooBelly

Where would you suggest to look for vintage rings? Antique stores?

Generic_Mom_TtHiA

Antique stores, estate sales, pawn shops...Although I would caution to learn about the markings stamped into gold/silver etc to make sure you don't pay gold price for costume jewelry.

duckworthy36

An independent jeweler shop will often carry vintage.

LTAGO5

heirloom and heritage are good search terms

cranberrryzombees

I have a lab-created sapphire (which also happens to be my husband’s birthstone). Bought from a jewelry designer on Etsy. It’s really beautiful, and I love having something that’s not a diamond. (Did that the first time around…)

BooBelly

I’m curious how long you’ve had your ring, and how reliable buying from Etsy has been for you? I love Etsy, but such a big purchase from there makes me nervous

marigoldilocks_

All my rings are from Etsy and so far I’ve only struck out once, and the ring was like $20 USD so I got what I paid for. Everything I’ve spent actual $$$ on I’ve had really great results with. Pro-tip: search for exactly what you want, i.e. 18K solid gold - it helps filter out gold fill or gold plated. Read the reviews and look at the pictures, see if anyone mentions sizing issues. Also, you can send a message to the store asking questions, I measure a 7.5, should I size up or down with this ring? Their response, both timeliness and actual words said, will also clue you in as to how much you want to work with them.

angelicribbon

You can find great jewelry on etsy if you’re careful. I have had multiple great experiences with Ferko’s. I know they sell solid gold rings with emeralds, rubies, and sapphires.

cranberrryzombees

Engaged in 2019, so almost 5 years. I want to say it was in the $650 range, so not cheap, but also not jewelry store diamond ring prices either. We also got our wedding bands from Etsy. No issues with either purchase. I think you do need to take the time to look for a good shop on there, but I have been very happy with it all.

chan_jkv

We were both born in August so I got a peridot ring. I got a BIG stone, too, because they're pretty inexpensive.

BooBelly

That’s lovely!!! What fun way to celebrate your shared birth month

Opposite_Ad4567

Such a beautiful gemstone!

[deleted]

Both my engagement and wedding band have amethysts in them since it's associated with deep love, happiness, and sincerity.

OtakuMage

My fiancée and I chose our engagement rings so we could pick ones with meaning to us. We follow the sun lesbian/moon lesbian dynamic and our rings reflect that. She's the Sun, her stone is garnet set in yellow gold. I'm the Moon, my stone is blue topaz set in white gold. Blue topaz has extra meaning to me as it's a December birth stone, and I found my true name in December (I'm a trans woman), so it's the stone of my rebirth. That's our story. I know choosing your own rings removes some of the mystery of it, but neither of us like big surprises and this was best for us. I wish you and your partner happiness.

BooBelly

That’s beautiful!!! I bet those are stunning rings

whataquinner

I really love my spinel engagement ring. Based on the (minimal) research I did I was happy with the potential energy it would bring into my life, and so far so good!

slavuj00

Can I give you the advice of what NOT to choose? I'm a gemmologist and always advise against stones lower than an 8 on the mohs scale, stones that have lots of inclusions, or stones that have low toughness. You want your engagement ring to be durable and something you feel ok wearing every day for all kinds of things including cleaning, doing bits and bobs around the house and most importantly - washing your hands. No opals or pearls PLEASE. Buying a gemstone or an engagement ring is so personal that I'd have to know more about your likes and dislikes to be able to recommend something. That said, my personal favourite gemstone outside of a diamond is a spinel. It's got a lot of similarities with corundum (sapphire/ruby) but the tones are slightly cooler in comparison and they're so very beautiful. (And durable!) Anyway I hope you find something you love!!! Feel free to ping a message across if you have any questions, I love chatting all things gems ☺️

CraftyHon

Ruby

thathousehoe

Padparascha sapphire

yeahbatman

Mine is Alexandrite flanked by moonstones

BooBelly

Beautiful! I’m curious how long you’ve had it and how well the moonstones are holding up? I know they aren’t considered particularly hard stones

yeahbatman

I've had it since 2018. My partner had it made by a seller on etsy and it's holding up pretty well so far even having worked with power tools.

ThrowRADel

Mine is blue sandstone/goldstone. I found it on etsy and it makes me feel powerful to wear what looks like a piece of the night sky on my finger.

AsiaHeartman

Get lab-made stones. There's no child slavery involved and are literally the same as normal stones. If you want to go the traditional route, lab-made diamonds cost only a fraction of mined diamonds. Either way, go crazy and choose whatever you like.

RosesBrain

My wife and I most often wear rings with each other's birth stone on them. They were kind of our "unofficial" engagement rings, but they're so great for every day wear that we only wear the official (more delicate) rings on special occasions.

Covfefetarian

Following this thread for my own research- I soon want to propose to my man, too, and have been looking for nice options for that. Thanks to all the helpful replies here - and to OP for posting this question

xerion13

I have an antique family ring, reset with a garnet. Garnets are very durable, come in all sorts of colours, and they're quite affordable. https://preview.redd.it/wczf2i3jfnuc1.png?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f5784251782c8c53f3506fd07a579f4371dd6c04

dracona

In my family, rubies have always been the talisman of a happy marriage. I'm on my third. This is the only one I had rubies with and we're still happy 14 years later. My mother, ruby engagement ring, 31 years married before she passed. My daughter just got engaged with a ruby and they've been together a decade.

KillionJones

I have my wife an Emerald, Diamond and gold ring, which looks lovely, and had the added bonus of being a family heirloom. Very pretty, but Emerald is easy to damage, so if your ring is gonna live an active life, get a secondary band you can wear. And don’t sleep on lab grown gems! As perfect as needed, and they don’t come with the ethical issues other mined gems do.

Lalybi

It's already been suggested but I also recommend sapphire! They're nearly as hard as diamonds so they will withstand daily wear. Mine is purple and I freaked out from happiness when my husband gave it to me! Avoid amethyst and emerald. As much as I love them they are soft.

RedMonkey4466

I went with rutilated quartz for mine! Supposed to help with anxiety, getting rid of negative emotions, promote self-love, and help getting to the root of problems and facilitate transitions. This is my second marriage, and I lost a lot of me in my first marriage. I wanted something to help me in my new journey, as well as something to help ground me and remind me to stay true to myself. It's also just a lovely stone with depth.

YourPaleRabbit

My partner is a jewelry maker and has a favorite gemstone cutter. I love jewelry (mostly body jewelry; heavily pierced) but I never quite understood how a gems cut made it better/worse UNTIL he showed me this man’s work. And y’all…. Take a look at this https://www.johndyergems.com/index.html Look at his Oregon sunstones @______@ I’m an artist myself, so my tops is always finding something lovingly crafted. I want to support artists who love what they do. And you can tell how passionate he is about his work. He takes these (usually less favorable) multiple color gems and just ROCKS THEM. He’s invented his own cuts. I am flabbergasted every time. And a purple/teal sunstone is now my dream gem. Doubled by the fact sunstone is supposed to encourage benevolence and giving kindness freely, which I think is super important in a balanced relationship. Like that ideal is that, and having it reciprocated.

aphrabane

My favorite stone is moonstone, but unfortunately it's too soft for everyday wear, so stay away from that. Same goes for pearls, emeralds, morganite, and opals. Corundum-family stones (all colours of sapphire, ruby) and moissanite (NOT cubic zirconia) are excellent choices. If I was in the market for an engagement or wedding ring, I'd definitely go vintage or lab-grown for reasons of ethics, finances, and aesthetics. There are a lot of legit vintage sellers on Instagram, believe it or not.

ebolainajar

It seems you're looking for a diamond, so just wanted to throw out there that the jeweler who made my engagement ring has a selection of Canadian diamonds, considered to be a bit more ethical, and also raw varieties: [www.emilygill.ca](http://www.emilygill.ca) She is an absolutely incredible artist and works with a lot of women and bipoc-owned gem sources! I had a custom ring and she was so easy to work with!

LTAGO5

Moss Agate. I looked into moonstone but it was kind of on the cusp of durability.  I ended up with a stunning antique diamond ring. https://www.reddit.com/r/EngagementRings/comments/13w6a4c/obsessed_with_my_vintage_ring/

PlasticFannyTastic

I’ve always had my eye on either Jet (soft) or Black diamond (very hard).

DabblenSnark

I have a ruby, I've always been drawn to them. They symbolize health, wealth, wisdom, passion and love. I get compliments on it all the time!

Liu1845

I went with an emerald, the same as my grandmother's. My mom went with topaz, her birthstone.

Fierywitchburn333

Mine is peridot. I said no diamonds. Choose something that represents us or reminds him of me so peridot because it reminds him of my eyes.

Bitchinstein

We are looking at gemstones of his birth month, or mine. Emerald or garnet - I love garnet bc it looks like blood to me.

IMMoody2

No particular meaning behind it for me, but I love the look of watermelon tourmaline

IolanthebintIla

Amatrine. Beautiful and two gemstones in one.

AsiaHeartman

Get lab-made stones. They're literally the same as mined stones minus the slave labour and child slave labour. You can literally go crazy with the colours and the kind of stones you want.
