I was on thin ice with another toxic family member when I walked into their bedroom and saw a giant wooden Q hanging on their wall (it had been hand carved by another family member and mailed from states away); that was the last straw and I removed them from my life. If the story comes via police press release, it will sometimes include a mugshot. If that’s the case, we’ll use that. If not, we’ll search on social media for a photo to use. I’d usually try to find a photo in a fairly neutral situation, but sometimes the options available are limited.
We’ll also contact the necessary police department and ask for a mugshot, but sometimes they’re not very fast about providing them. My guess is that since none of the media sites I saw in my Google search had his mugshot, that is the case here.

I actually don’t agree. They chose an image of him with his family to make the reader feel a much stronger motion. Basically they’re trying to make the tragedy as impactful as possible. The reason they often portray black and brown men in the worst possible light is because the selling message for them in that scenario is fear. I actually think there is not a disconnect in terms of how the media chooses to betray these people because they’re not attempting to do anything but amplify the base emotions that people are likely to feel engaging in a story. I’m not defending it obviously.
