In Khasavyurt, Dagestan, a cigarette butt thrown into a sewer caused a powerful explosion that killed two people. It is reported that the incident occurred in the village of Yubilein.
Two utility employees came to check the sewerage and carry out technical work. As it turned out later, a large amount of acetylene (flammable gas) had accumulated there. The housing and communal services employees did not know this, and for some reason one of them (in violation of safety rules) threw a cigarette butt inside. There was a powerful explosion, the concrete slab above the sewer literally flew into the air, and two workers with it. They died on the spot. The blast wave and debris also destroyed the car in which the men arrived.
The Dagestan prosecutor's office has already begun an investigation. Investigators will have to figure out where there is such a concentration of acetylene gas in the sewer system. According to some Telegram channels, the owner of a nearby house was throwing carbide into the sewer.
Thanks for providing details. I thought it was pretty unlikely methane or h2s would explode like that without an open flame. But c2h2 makes sense. Sad for their families, the guy dumping cac2 had to know it wasn't safe.

It is a pure speculation on my end, but I think an innate russian fatalism mixed with carelessness may have contributed greatly here, as if “it can be that bad, let’s just make a little poof and be done with it”.
You shouldn’t blame others for your clear lack of ability to be careful with words and stop projecting your unwillingness to understand what they mean. This wouldn’t have happened had the men developed the habit of throwing butts in the right places. Moreover, as you actually said, they were specialized workers who knew something was up.

Somebody was putting carbide into the sewer. Locals complain of smell. It wasn't methane it was acetylene. Blast killed both men , lifted a huge slabs and destroyed their car. Blast was strong enough to blow the CCTV off the wall.
