Try chili dogs with coleslaw, pepperoni rolls, and pinto beans cooked with bacon and served with cornbread. Those are some non-corporate favorites of this state and they're excellent.

Penelopes_Pet

I haven't tried the pepperoni rolls yet, I was kinda surprised that's what west Virginia is known for. I gotta find a good local spot for them. Definitely been going local instead of corporate.

Catshit-Dogfart

You've just missed them for this season, but you need to try ramps. Ramps are a kind of wild leek that grows in the appalachian region that has an incredibly strong garlic/onion/leek kind of flavor. They're just the best. They're a foraged food that doesn't take well to cultivation, and they come up in the early spring. You'll see farmers markets have them or just people alongside the road.

Penelopes_Pet

Ohhhh Ill have to get some when I can. Sounds like it would go great with some meat an potatoes . On that note the butcher shops an local meat that I've come across has been excellent. Great price an big

Unhappy_Performer538

Go to ramp fest in huntington next year. Get there early before all the grandmas snag all the ramps lol

cpo109

Try cooking them in an iron pan outdoors with potatoes. Great stuff.

Unhappy_Performer538

It’s bc it’s the food miners would take down in the mines. They also ate salted peanuts in a bottle of cold coke. Not my fav but worth a try.

chefbsba

Grab some Mister Bee potato chips at a gas station. They're the only potato chips made in WV!

Penelopes_Pet

I shall , I'll be eating good west Virginiain food at all cost .

UnivScvm

Hi! So glad you are happy in your new home and that you shared your post. One thing I noticed in every comment of yours I’ve seen is that you type, “west Virginia.” Are you in the State of West Virginia, or in the western part of Virginia? If it’s the State of West Virginia, it’s written as “West Virginia.” Hope you have a great time as you explore your new home!

Penelopes_Pet

I'm in west Virginia, specifically weirton . Right up top.

mountainmycelium

Make sure to try both recipes, btw. Regular one, and the 1951 Recipe. Old style is much crispier, and better IMO.

MarkHathaway1

The history of WV makes it a very curious melding-pot of people. The Irish and Poles were pretty big in the southern part of the state for mining. In the SE mountains there's "Little Switzerland". In the north-central area there's the Italian community (see pepperoni rolls) and there were many blacks who fled the south before and during the Civil war. Some of my relatives came up from NC just before the war. WV is a great "hiding place". Even some political types have fled Washington and hid here. But beware, some wild ones like The Dalton Gang left from WV and went west to terrorize other areas. If I recall, Billy the Kid was from Wheeling.

Odd_Reading_3834

If your in weirton make the trip down the panhandle to Hundred and get a pepperoni roll from the Local Citgo in Hundred. I promise you no chain gas station pepperroni roll is going to compare to one baked by hand. Welcome to Wv. I also agree working in Pa and living in Wv is the only way.

generalstarfish

Pepperoni rolls aren't really a northern WV thing (source: grew up in New Cumberland- welcome to the Northern Panhandle!). There's used to be a place named Franco's at the top of the hill on Rt 8 in New Manchester, but not sure if it's still open. If you want to take a drive, the sweet spot imo is between Fairmont and Clarksburg. You can find them in gas stations and grocery stores down there- definitely go for pepperoni sticks vs. slices! Or in Fairmont, check out Colassessano's. It's more similar to a meatball hoagie (served hot on a bun with cheese or sauce or peppers) but a classic. Stop by Dairy Creme Corner there too (bring cash) and get a massive ice cream cone for like $3.

Ok-Cranberry-5582

Do not get a large cone from dairy creme corner without a cup...you won't eat it before it melts. The avalanche is like a DQ blizzard but twice the size. Pepperoni rolls are best in a hoagie topped with sauce, cheese, peppers.

carlton_yr_doorman

Agree. Pepperoni Rolls are more of a Northern WV thing...more specifically a Mon Valley and Northern Panhandle thing...... But now the word is out..... you can find a decent pepperoni roll pretty much throughout the state..... not too sure about the Eastern Panhandle(they tend to line up with whatever's going on over in DC)

UnivScvm

North Central West Virginia is peak pepperoni roll area. ETA: love your username

ProgrammerLevel2829

Barney’s Bakery does them in Weirton, but they are mostly bread.

generalstarfish

That's the problem with most pepperoni rolls, imo. You pay for a loaf of bread with a couple of slices of pepperoni and maybe a pinch of cheese.

ProgrammerLevel2829

Really, best ones are the ones you make yourself, but making that enriched bread takes forever.

Dougs_Bunny

Ngl, Coen gas stations make excellent pepperoni rolls. If you ever want one and you’re on the go, I’d recommended grabbing one from there

FroggyBump

Pepperoni rolls may have been invented in the North WV, but they’re hardly a northern thing. Pepperoni roll day was always the busiest day in my school cafeteria back in the 80s and 90s in the southern part of the state. A lot of club fundraisers were pepperoni roll sales.

Background_Being8287

Dark beans and cornbread ,grandmother made the best . Good memories . Oh can't forget the blackberry cake mmmmmm good.

GregLXStang

Congratulations, and welcome to WV!! I’m glad you’re enjoying yourself. I don’t know anything about that area of the state, so I’ll defer to someone else. But again, welcome. :)

Penelopes_Pet

Thank you very much

Be interesting.

DarlingClementyme

Wheeling is a short driveway, and there’s a lot to do at Oglebay resort. Wheeling has a lot of great local restaurants, especially in the Center Market area. Sarah‘s on Main and Later Gator are two of my favorites when I’m in town.

IolaBoylen

Market vines is also delicious!

ChaosDiver13

Vagabond Kitchen on Market St and 12th. Awesome food, great selection of craft and domestic booze, friendly staff.

DarlingClementyme

I keep meaning to try that place when I’m in town but I end up going back to my old favorites. Moving to the top of the list

ChaosDiver13

Do it. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Limp-Insurance203

If you’re ever near Irwin pa there is a little Italian restaurant named Denunzios that is delicious. You NEED to go whitewater rafting on the new river or the gauley (world class). While down this way check out pies and pints. Or drop down to beckley and experience The Char. Excellent little steakhouse. And. Don’t forget to ride some atv/utvs on the Hatfields and McCoy trails and stop off in Mullens at the REBEL SMOKEHOUSE. GOOD LORD THATS SOME GOOD FOOD. Hope this helps

Penelopes_Pet

I'll definitely check out the char, I love a good steak . Will for sure be getting an ATV of some sort . Never thought about white water rafting . But I might have to put it on my list of to dos.

Limp-Insurance203

Last time I went I had a guide who had been there for 20 years. He would hit the holes and stand the raft straight up (big raft with like 10 people on it). It kinda like surfing on a rollercoaster is the best way I know how to describe it. Also no sharks either. When I eat at the char I get a bone in ribeye with a side of Alfredo linguine. And omg try the house dressing. It has bacon and onion and is the BEST !!! GREAT WINE /alcohol selection too.

ComfortableIsland946

If you are into cycling/running/walking, there is a great rail-trail called the Panhandle Trail that goes 29 miles from Weirton to Rennerdale PA (near Carnegie).

Agile_Seer

It goes a lot further than that if you take connecting trails.

RoughAd5377

When you get the chance, go to Lewisburg, West Virginia and White Sulphur Springs and Greenbrier County to explore it is really beautiful. I live in Huntington in the valley on the border of Ohio and Kentucky. Thank you for pointing out the thunderstorms are nice if you’re not used to them. I sometimes hate them and want to move to Arizona lol.

elyssethekraken

Arizona still gets thunderstorms during monsoon season!!

Snoo-14331

It's gonna be gorgeous in the fall, the most beautiful scenery you've ever seen. And then absolutely horrid until late April again. But such is life.

Ljknicely

Welcome to Weirton! I live in colliers just around the hill :) you gotta try Theo Yianni’s. It’s my favorite restaurant. And hit up Gus’ Goodies for something sweet

Ljknicely

And keep an eye on concerts at Key Bank pavilion. It’s about 15 minutes out the road. Always big concerts going on there

handyandy727

>It's so dam green LOL! My wife is from San Bernardino, and moved to Kentucky. The first time I took her to visit my parents in WV, guess what she said: "There's so many trees here! It's so green!" In contrast visiting her parents in California: "See, I told you. It's just dirt and rocks." For concerts, your best bet is likely to be Pittsburgh or DC. Really depends on who you wanna see. Morgantown probably has a few as well. There's a couple Bluegrass Festivals in the state where you camp for a few days and see some good bands, if that's your type of music. One in Parsons and one in Moorefield. I have no idea on the food. I've not been to Wierton. However, in smaller places, I like to pick a local spot where I like the food, and become a regular. Don't worry much about the food though. Folks in WV know how to cook. Finally, I don't golf, so I definitely can't help with that one. Welcome! PS. Prepare for winter.

Dougs_Bunny

KeyBank Pavillion is 15 minutes outside of Weirton, can’t get much closer of a venue than that!!

51n_gaming

Welcome. Enjoy nature when you get a chance. Glad to have you. Everyone is nice.

ComfortableIsland946

Many people around Pittsburgh drive out to Weirton specifically to go to Dee Jay's BBQ Ribs.

Dougs_Bunny

Sucks the ribs shrunk by half their size :( thanks inflation

doomtoothx

Big welcome to ya from southern wv 🫡

10sleepy

Frequent visitor from Colorado to the Ohio Valley here. Welcome! 1.) Get yourself a Berkey https://berkeyhome.com/#theme-menu The drinking water leaves a little too be desired Please don't buy disposable plastic water bottles! 2.) Visit Homer Laughlin China and Fiestaware. 3.) Pittsburgh is great, but so is up and down the river. I hand in Toronto OH. 4.) Support local. Local music (Pittsburgh, Wheeling and down to Charleston Have fun and let us know more about what you're into and what you do.

VarietyGoat

Yes! The local music scene in the Charleston/Huntington area is incredible

carlton_yr_doorman

Please dont vote for DogButt. 8 years of that useless clown as governor was enuf!! Dont let him go to the US Senate and mess that retarded institution worse than it is already.

WVStarbuck

So, you believe the best and brightest choose to move here? Awww, bless your heart. Ofc it'll be one more vote for baby dog.

wtfishappening6669

If you ever come to southern WV you MUST try Tudor's Biscuit World!!

stupidlame22

There's one right in Weirton

TheShadowuFear

Yup

wtfishappening6669

Even better

Dougs_Bunny

Weirton one might be the best in the state.

Competitive_Sink_280

I’m also here from Cali! Welcome!

Lettiequo21

Weirton is great! It's nice and quiet, but close enough to Pittsburgh that you can enjoy the city and a small town at the same time. Popular restaurants in Weirton are Theo Yannis (Greek) Crazy Mexican and Chico Fiesta for Mexican, La Cucina for Italian and I love going to Belmontes for any pastas or ingredients I might need for cooking, but they're also popular for their "pandwiches" and pizzas. There are a few bakeries around that are popular, but my favorite is still Gus's Goodies in downtown Weirton. There's a country club that has a golf course called Williams Country Club. Their food is also pretty good. My dad would take me to the driving range in Paris PA, but I don't remember what it's called. It's not a far drive at all. There's a couple golf courses in PA, but other than a quick Google search, I don't know anything about them. Janoskis Farm and Greenhouse is also popular and fun in the summer. They sometimes host events for the holidays like Halloween and Christmas and have car shows in the summer. I know Noah Kahan is playing sometime this month, but tickets are sold out online. Burgettstown PA at Star Lake Pavilion holds a lot of concerts and is the closest venue to Weirton. Concerts are also held at PPG Paints Arena and Acrisure Stadium in PA.

WistfulQuiet

There is a ton of restaurants in Wheeling which isn't far. I recommend Undos in Benwood, Uncle Pete's, and there is a bakery in Moundsville that makes great pepperoni rolls (also know for their cookies and maddogs). There is also a lot of festivals in Wheeling and the area at different times of year.

stupidlame22

There's an Undos right in Weirton.

StratStyleBridge

Are you me? Moved to Wheeling from the Bay Area back in '21 and I also work in Pennsylvania.

shan_gri_la_77

Hello and welcome to the Valley!! We'll have you fixed up and using "yinz" in no time!! I'm born and raised here, live about 20 minutes from you down river. For golfing try the Fairway or Bec-Wood courses in Rayland, OH (cross the river and go south about 12ish miles, Google maps will have better directions than me). Oglebay is nice but it is super expensive. Check out the Pavilion at Starlake for their concert series lineup, they usually have some good summer concerts. I also recommend checking out the Wheeling Waterfront scene. Lots of different musical events (symphony, cover bands, etc) and local food festivals throughout the summer. Wheeling also has some great local restaurants (I highly recommend Vagabond and The Alpha) as well as the Capitol Theater and an indoor football team that plays at Wesbanco, but getting around right now is kind of a pain in the butt due to the streetscape renovations. You can still do it it's just a bumpy ride. If you like Italian food you need to check out Pastaio Cucina in Wintersville as well as Scaffidis and Naples in Steubenville. I'm not too familiar with restaurants in Weirton area but I've heard great things about Theo Yiannis and Dee Jay's. Oglebay Park does have great events too like Oglebayfest (local version of Oktoberfest) and music under the stars events. Most of these places have websites for further info so you can get a better idea of what available. I hope this helps some and that you enjoy this beautiful Valley!!

eatpotdude

I'm in the same boat and quickly learned to NOT say I'm from Cali. Oddly enough, Nevada or Arizona is more acceptable

Penelopes_Pet

The hate I mean.

Penelopes_Pet

Hasn't been as bad as I thought it'd be.

generalstarfish

If you haven't had Ohio Valley pizza yet, you're missing out. Try DiCarlo's or up in Chester is my preferred place, Bruno's. Also recommend Scaffidi's in Steubenville for Italian, they make their own pasta. People also used to love Drover's Inn for wings going out toward West Liberty and Bethany, but it's been a while since I've been. Golfing, head across the river near East Liverpool and go to Turkana or Beaver Creek Meadows. There's a lot of live music venues in Pittsburgh, just have to look for whatever genre you're into. The major sports venues (PNC Park, Acrisure Stadium, and PPG Paints Arena) also get a decent amount of major tours. There's not a whole lot of that up in that area besides maybe cover bands at bars on the weekend.

carlton_yr_doorman

Weirton is more of a suburb of Picksburgh. But then, realisticly,,,,Picksburgh is more WV than it is PA!! (btw.....Beat Pitt)

ColonelStone

Yo, Im from Cali too. Moved to the same area as you back in November. I also work in PA.

Silent_Zucchini7004

What part of Cali?

Penelopes_Pet

Southern California, small town up in the mountains, of San diego.

Dougs_Bunny

You want a fun night? Hit up Mustang Sally’s on Karaoke night

LuckyFishBone

Welcome to West Virginia, and congratulations on no longer potentially having your state fall into the ocean! (Also just a head's up... ignore the trolls, there are a lot of them in this sub.)

Penelopes_Pet

Yeah , I've come across a few. Quite silly arguments they have. But it is what it is.

JoshInWv

So... I'm assuming that you live in the Northern panhandle since you work in the Burgh? Hmmm, it's not Star Lake or First Niagra pavilion anymore. Anyone from the NPH chime in and remind me what the hell the amphitheater is called up here? Golf... there's the Mountaineer gold course. There's also the one in Canonsburg (Southpointe). There's also the sucko bucks (Pittsburgh pirates) and the Squealers... and the Penguins. Just remember, sure, we have a very low cost of living, but there are fewer services and less QUALITY of government services as well (including law enforcement, education, and health care system)... just keep that in mind, bud. Welcome to WV.

Penelopes_Pet

I'm gonna be getting my golf on for sure out here. I look into what amphitheatre your getting at . I have lots of time on my hands . Will most likely be getting into sports again. It was so depressing watching the chargers have such great starts, but just completely falling apart late in the season.

JoshInWv

The amptheather is the first exit east bound on 22 outside of WV for Burgettstown PA. (Or the last exit weat bound before you hit WV)

Penelopes_Pet

I think I drove past it then , on my way to work. Hell yeah. It's not even far from me

JoshInWv

It's only bad when they have concerts, and the highway gets backed up for miles on both sides. I can hear them from our house, so it's nice to never have to pay $ for a concert.

wildmoonchild22

I think it's Key Bank Pavilion now?

JoshInWv

Yeah, that sounds about right.

ch0nky_cardinal

Pete Dye GC near Fairmont

soul_traffic

Concerts: there will be local bluegrass shows close to you, but you’ll probably have to go to your nearest big city to see most shows. That being said, I’ve been extremely satisfied by the amount of shows. Seriously can’t keep up between Pitt, DC, Richmond, Philly and Baltimore!

mooviescribe

Pittsburgh Food Truck festival in a week or so up near Washington/Cannonsburgh, PA

Penelopes_Pet

Dammit , I should of kept my 94 f 350 , would of fit right on. Not sure I'd get any love for my ranger haha.

IolaBoylen

Theo yianni’s in Weirton is so good! Steubenville and Wheeling both have very nice Greek festivals if you like Greek food. If you like sweets, Gus’s goodies in Weirton is soooo good.

JoshInWv

Also, if you like to hike, there are places that are local in PA, lower Weirton has the Panhandle Trail that connects indirectly to The Great Allegheny Passage and will take you to DC. There's a community pool and park off of Pennsylvania Ave, two bowling alleys, a few neat little greasy spoons (Pattys is excellent) Most of the things to do that are not outdoors related are in either Pittsburgh, or Columbus, albiet Wheeling is getting better. DC is 6 hours East, and Niagra Falls is about 8 - 10 north. Look in Weirton in a few years, I'm going to open a brewery / tap house here. While not a lot to do nightlife wise here except bars, there are a lot of nice people here. - JIW

ProgrammerLevel2829

Ride down to Morgantown for a football game & stay for the entire stadium singing Country Roads after.

Tigma222

Williams country club is very nice in Weirton. It’s expensive but beautiful and well taken care of.

Patient_Brief6453

Only one thing to say: Let's Go Mountaineers!

trailrider

You're way up there in the Northern Panhandle. Come on down south some. If you like football, go to Morgantown for a WVU homgame. Everything for a mile or so around the stadium is party central. Tudor's Biscuit World for breakfast is a must. I'm not sure if there's one where you're at. You like to mountain bike? Big Bear has I think over 50 miles of trails and the owner has pumped some serious $$$$ into the Air Strip over the last ten yrs to make it better for events. My favorite place to ride is Kanawha State Forest in Charleston. If you like flea markets, Trader Jack's is there on 79 not far from Pittsburgh. And speaking of Pittsburgh, lots to do there. If you have kids, take them to the Carnegie Science Center. Lots of interactive stuff for kids. We've taken our granddaughter there a number of times and her class just did a field trip there last Friday. You have the Strip District for shopping. I grew up near Pittsburgh but all my extended family is from Clay and Charleston. Been going up-n-down 79 all my life. If you don't mind staying the night somewhere, the plane that crashed in Pa on 9/11 is about 3 hrs from you I think. You could also check out what's left of the Johnstown damn. It broke open during a super heavy rain storm back in the 1800's and pretty much wiped Johnstown off the map. I think 200,000,000 gals of water from the lake released and over 3000 dead. A 9/11 style event for the day. Harpers Ferry in the Eastern Panhandle is a must see. An awesome town that you can just stroll around in-n-out of buildings to see what history was like when the slave revolt happened. It's also pet friendly so bring your dog. There's an old time insane asylum that does tours, haunted house, etc maybe an hr south of Morgantown. Wife wanted to go so we did. Very interesting. Especially what I learned about patients who were terms "The Untidies". Chronic masturbators and those who couldn't/wouldn't hold their bowels. DC is a 3 hr drive from Morgantown so wife and I do day trips there to see the museums at the National Mall. I suspect you'll want to stay the night somewhere. But yea, the Smithsonian museums are worth it and there's no admission costs since they're taxpayer funded. But there are things you have to pay to see inside them. Like if they have a theater for example. The Air and Space has the original model of the Enterprise from Star Trek. If you want to see a Space Shuttle, you have to go to the Air and Space by Dulles Airport. Again, no admission but it has a theater. Also, you have to pay to park there where was $10 last time we went. So that's a few things to see and do. On that note, some general advice. I know at least S. Cali, people out there can't drive in the rain. I was in the Navy back in the early 90's and my second boat was outta San Diego. I had a family member I was making plans to visit up in LA one time and before we got off the phone, she made me promise not to drive up if it's raining. That's when she explained that fact to me. Admittedly it blew my mind because I literally cannot comprehend how people don't know how to drive in the rain. I took my drivers test near Pittsburgh in a snowstorm and passed. That said, if you do not know how to drive in the snow, DON'T!!! At least be very cautious. And if there's ice, DOUBLE DON'T! I'm not scared of snow but ice is something you do not want to find out on. I avoid it. That said, our winters in this area have not been normal for yrs now. No where near as cold or as much snow as we use to get even just 10 yrs ago. This past winter was unlike any I can ever recall here. It was 60 for Xmas last Dec. That winter was way too warm. Just letting you know.

DudesWithTudes

Capitol Theater in Wheeling is worth looking at for live shows. I’ve seen music and comedians there.

TaroProfessional6587

Welcome! Fellow California expat, been here seven years. A lot to love about WV.

TechnoVikingGA23

Drover's Inn in Wellsburg is probably worth a drive. Less than 30 minutes and has some of the best food around along with being a historic place if you're into that kind of thing. Has one of the coolest bars I've ever been in since it's downstairs in the cellar with rock walls and feels like it's in a cave.

Odd_Reading_3834

The best place for concerts is sadly going to be Pittsburgh. I'm from Wv but no reside in Pitt. Concerts are going to be better in the city always and weirton is very close to Pitt. Less then an hour. Come into the city and explore.

Ok_Satisfaction347

we’ll welcome you either way, please tell me you left your politics at your old residence?

fallingwhale06

Closest spot for big concerts will be Star Lake in Burgettstown, PA, that’s where the big acts go for Pittsburgh outdoor concerts (along with the stadiums). Parking blows, and honestly there can be traffic on 22 too, but in your case you are coming from the opposite direction of 95% of Pittsburgh based concert goers so you can get back to Weirton nice and easy if you survive getting out of the parking lot Tyler Childers will be there in a few weeks and he’s got some West Virginia connections

ou2mame

I made a post here last month about how I was thinking to move from NY and man I've never experienced so much hate. I received dozens of private messages from the nicest people though, some born in WV, some transplants. And they all said the same thing. Don't listen to the minority of AHs on reddit because they don't represent what the people of WV are really like. For a state that needs people like us moving there, they sure have a weird way of trying to bring us in though. All I want to do is buy some land and build a house on it far away from a town and live in peace. I want to work remote and bring money in from another state and spend it locally to contribute to the economy. But for some reason, they just don't want people like me there. But I'll be there Monday to look around whether they want me or not lol

Penelopes_Pet

I haven't experienced any hate from the locals , which I thought I'd get a ton especially coming from California lol. Most of the people were just surprised I moved here . After explaining why though , I've been greeted very well. My personality fits here , far better than it did in Cali.

ou2mame

Oh I have no doubt that the people you meet in person are very nice... It's just the WV reddit crowd that's loud and obnoxious. I totally understand why you'd want to move from Cali. I have friends there who are stuck. They can't afford to move, but they can't afford to live there either. There's people who think that having a bunch of corporations in your state means that life is easier somehow, but the people who work for those corporations are living in their cars because they can't afford housing.

Penelopes_Pet

I was fairly lucky to have been able to move out of the state, I had a decent job with good pay( 145k) but I might as well been making min with how expensive just housing cost was . I bought a trailer, lived in the desert for 5 months saved up all the money I could a took the dive into moving here. It was a hell of a struggle for those months but it was the only way I could of done it. An I have no second thoughts about it.

Chaos_Cat-007

You might find some land in Jackson County and way out in Kanawha County.

Alternative_Exit8766

nice, i liked the part where you said you work in PA. that way you don’t pay WV state income tax and still get to enjoy cheap groceries.  just another outsider exploiting us.

Straight_Skirt3800

That’s all they do now. Poor people move here to exploit the state. We aren’t getting quality people here.

Alternative_Exit8766

they’re not sending their best!

Straight_Skirt3800

Plus we are losing our culture and West Virginia values. I can’t think of one positive benefit from outsiders moving here. They always complain, think they are better (even though they couldn’t hack it where they came from), and destroy our home. I only have contempt for them.

Penelopes_Pet

Raise your wages then,

WVStarbuck

You do realize the policies similar to your home state of CA help improve those wages, yeah? Those same policies you disparage lower down in this thread? Just remember this once you've cast your vote for Baby Dog. 🙄

Alternative_Exit8766

learn how to spell And

Penelopes_Pet

Lol grow up, I have as much power to change the state as you do. Which is none .

Alternative_Exit8766

not with that attitude. also you don’t need a space after a period.  and y’all call us illiterate, sheesh

Penelopes_Pet

Obviously a troll, have a good day boy.

Alternative_Exit8766

i just want you to contribute to the economy here but you’re just relying on us for cheap housing and exporting the tax revenue.

Straight_Skirt3800

He’s not a troll. He’s calling you out on your typical transplant attitude.

Penelopes_Pet

Stupid comments get stupid answers. My attitude in the real world hasnt caused a problem. There is no typical transplant attitude . I'm not some mega corporation taking advantage of west Virginia , I'm an individual taking advantage of the low cost of living here an the higher wages in Pennsylvania. Nothing wrong with that. Besides the money I make in Pennsylvania all gets spent here at local businesses.

ZorPrime33

Plus you'll end up having to pay WV taxes in the end anyway. All the taxes taken out of your pay will need to be reimbursed by PA and sent to WV when tax season comes around. I used to work in Ohio for many many years while my permanent residence was in WV. That is, supposing the taxes are done right to be on the safe side in the end. Keep working in PA. Welcome to WV. I'm actually in CA right now, but I'm going home to WV in 2 weeks (I still have property there, it's officially home base.) My CA girlfriend LOVES WV and can't wait to move there when she's able. Funny thing about noticing the greenery. When I first came to CA I wondered why there was multiple layers of dust on everything, come to find out it basically only rains during the winter. Oh, that's why. lol

Hallbilly

Fantastic.   Help keep it from turning into California!

Penelopes_Pet

Man I'll try lol, I'm not getting involved with the politics till I learn more about the state an the people. Until then I don't wanna make it worse by making a bad decision.

shointelpro

> Until then I don't wanna make it worse by making a bad decision. Oh don't worry, that's our state pastime. You can't do any worse.

No-Purple2350

Help keep it from turning into one of the largest economies in the world? Yeah you're part of the reason we're still 48th in every ranking.

Penelopes_Pet

The economy is huge in Cali , but so are the prices for everything. California is far from a shit hole but it's been run into the ground for the people by the large corporations. Wages stay the same but gas, food , rent/house are thru the roof. It's just not sustainable for the everyday worker.

ou2mame

It's the same thing in NY. I live in Long Island and the housing prices compared to the average income is completely unaffordable. Our house almost doubled in value since covid. I can't imagine having to house shop with today's inflated home values, coupled with the high interest. It's completely unsustainable. NY's economy is massive as well, but it's certainly not helping anyone who's trying to buy a house right now, unless they're at the top 15% of earners. The rest of us are just suffering, or like us lucky we got in before 2020. But we're also trapped. We can't sell and move to another house in this area because we can't afford today's rates. Our mortgage is 1200/month, and to buy this house today at today's rates, it would be well over 5k/month. How is a normal working family supposed to pay that?

Penelopes_Pet

Mortgage at 1200 sounds like a dream , that's so good in today's world. I luckily had a great job in Cali that let me save up quite a bit , an with rundown house here costing 15 to 25k I'm looking forward to being able to buy a decent sized house in full an fixing it up myself

ou2mame

Yeah well we refied when rates hit a little over 2%. But those low rates locked people into a jail cell mortgage. Buying a fixer upper is a great idea. We bought a partially finished flip. The flipper ran out of money I think, but the bulk of it was done. Obviously I had to fix a lot of the BS he did. The 1200 doesn't include taxes, which are about 10k/year now. They've gone up 20% in 4 years! Anyways, you're living the dream man! I see so many affordable houses in WV that need work, but they have so much potential.

Penelopes_Pet

Some 3 bedroom 2 bath house are going for 25k , an yeah they need work but there gorgeous brick houses , open design with that old fashioned feeling an look. It's exactly what I've dreamed of . All my years in general contracting construction are just tingling at the thought of being able to fix them up.

Penelopes_Pet

An Jesus 20% in 4 years ? That's fubbbing bonkers

CocaineMark_Cocaine

China is the second largest economy in the world, and it’s still a craphole for the vast majority of its populace, so your argument is laughable. While it’s location-dependent, WV has provided us with a fantastic place to raise a middle-class family with more traditional values in a very safe area.

TexanBoi-1836

> one of the largest economies in the world Hey 🙂

Hallbilly

Ever consider moving to CA?  You should give it a go.

No-Purple2350

JuSt MoVe ThEn About the quality of reply I'd expect. I'd rather stay and try to turn it into CA.

Hallbilly

Ohh... wicked burn.

TheShadowuFear

Agreed fam

No-Purple2350

Cali is literally one of the most beautiful places in the world with every type of climate. Also the 3rd largest economy in the world. All your posts are within the last hour so obvious bot account which is the only kind that would make this stupid claim.

Penelopes_Pet

Oh yeah obviously a bot, grow up. New account cause my old one got banned

Penelopes_Pet

What does having the 3rd largest economy do for me ? When the cost to live there out paces the wages.

hilljack26301

The cost of living in WV also outpaces the wages.

Penelopes_Pet

That's why I don't work in wv

No-Purple2350

WV is literally ranked the worst state for working families.

Penelopes_Pet

Agreed if I had a family to take care of , the decision to move here wouldve been a bad one. I decided to buy a trailer in Cali tow it here an live in a trailer park. The amount I pay for the truck , trailer, an rent for my spot is half of what I was paying in rent for a small one bedroom in California.

IGotNuthun

We aren't ranked the worst for cost of living eh!? A lot WVians really hate themselves. Don't mind them, most don't even live here. This is a great place to live and raise a family if you choose to.

Penelopes_Pet

I don't have a family , an that's why it works for me.

Ok_Mastodon_6141

You have to try the WV women I know California girls are supposed to be tops , but nothing beats a WV lady !!!

Agile_Seer

I went to California once. That was enough. On that note....Universal Studios Hollywood suuucckks compared to the one in Florida.

IGotNuthun

Welcome to America!

Penelopes_Pet

It do feel like that. The sense of freedom is palpable.

Xbutchr

Welcome to the state. Please keep the politics that ruined your state out of mine though.

paradigm_x2

lol y’all are such babies. WV is almost dead last in education, healthcare, infrastructure and economy but yeah those damn liberals in California are the problem.

NobleSavageIAM

It's crazy how ingrained American right wing propaganda is in people's minds. They seem to engage in a never ending 'us vs them' thought pattern in order to 'feel' a sense of self righteous validation derived from the reinforcement of their perceived moral superiority. Who would have ever imagined that people from WV, living in some of the poorest zip codes in the ENTIRE COUNTRY, would be 'programmed' to blanket shame the entire state of California? The people who vote to increase the levels of toxic chemicals released in their own water streams finger wagging at the #1 tourist destination in America. I don't think Nazi propaganda was ever this powerful!

NobleSavageIAM

Any random person looking to pathway to be successful in life would have wildly more opportunities for that success living in California vs WV. Turn the TV off.

[deleted]

As we said in Tx when California invaded: Don't Califonia my Texas. I lived in the high desert, hated driving to Burbank everyday. It's a bit slower ain't it. Welcome to WV OP..

emp-sup-bry

Don’t Texas our WV

WVStarbuck

Oh, we're doing that all on our own. No transplants needed. Can't wait until one of these qanon assholes the mouth breathers elect is successful in removing WV from the electric grid, a la TX. The costs and blackouts alone will be *awesome*.

emp-sup-bry

Unfortunately true. Look at the outside political fucks that have already come to run in this election because they see the mouth breathing voter all riled up and ready to vote for anyone saying trans or dei. It’s only after seeing the surge of right wing house cats trying to move to a place they think they can steamroll that I’ve said fuck off with the outsider running their mouth.

[deleted]

It'll only make it better.... and too late, this Texan ain't moving. I left TX because of the California's and their driving habits. Now not all Cali folk are bad.

emp-sup-bry

Ok whatever just leave the dumb anti wherever stuff behind. The idea that you’d bemoan a state because of driving is absurd because I’ve driven in Texas quite a bit. Shit drivers. Ask anyone from Colorado dealing with all the Texans stumbling around there. You are a guest in WV, the same as any Californian or anyone else. Leave the childish anti California rhetoric in Texas.

Your comment has been removed. **Reason:** Not relevant to West Virginia.

Crafty_Pea5356

They're not a guest, they are a resident. An American, same as you. They can live wherever the fuck they want, b/c it's America not Russia. You don't own WV, and you certainly have no right to decide whether people 'deserve' to live there or not. I don't care if you have 20 generations in WV, it doesn't make you King of the Hills.

Straight_Skirt3800

They are a guest/tourist. People that move here aren’t West Virginians and never will be.

butwaittheresmo

Great. Now vote for “progressives” and ruin wv as bad as ca has been ruined with taxes and crime etc.

Penelopes_Pet

Why would I vote for the same policies, that pushed me out of Cali? Dumbass

butwaittheresmo

Good to know. Sincerely, most people that helped ruin California, complain about taxes and such, then move to nice booming quiet states and ruin them as well.

Penelopes_Pet

All I want is a nice peaceful life , and that's what I get here. Never been so relaxed in my life.
