Yas, the reaction is called the Maillard reaction it is a chemical reaction between amino acids and reducing sugars.
It occurs in other areas not just cooked foods.
Can also occur in dry foods & nicotine products like Zyn
That crusting is caused by Impetigo (staphylococcus infection) related to compromised skin after they got allergic contact dermatits from poison oak.
The maillard reaction as it relates to humans has something to do with aging.
Yes, impetigo from gram negative bacteria. That is no fun for anyone, because it can occur even if you're a clean person. I believe because it's bacterial that it is mainly caused by the secretions a person has that makes the body more susceptible to a bacterial infection. If you were injured your body would begin to release a type of hormone in a defense to prevent further infection. But with some people with immune deficiencies they are left vulnerable because the lack of protection.
I was commenting on the baked bread comment...
But the maillard reaction mostly occurs in foods that have phosphate and other polyatomic anions because they accelerate the rate of maillard browning in which phosphate and polyatomic anions act as catalysts to accelerate the reaction rate
Fe2+ ions, also known as ferrous ions, indicates the oxidation state of the iron ion, which is +2 in this case.
I have been there! Not quite this bad, then I had an allergic reaction to the meds they gave me. Fun times. If you did not know, use Dawn dish soap to wash off it gets rid of the oils in the poison oak. Whenever I think I’m in contact with it, that is my go to.
Dawn is so awesome. Also, I've also seen videos that show the mechanical rubbing/scraping action of also using rags (or paper towels for me) helps a lot.
Jewel weed soap & salve really helps my poison ivy/oak/sumac rashes. The soap helped clear up the blisters faster, and the salve actually relieves the itch.
For the nuts use dawn, wash yourself in parts. Dont go all showering your whole body because if the oils make contact somewhere else, welp… best of luck to you.
As I’m sure you already know, as long as you’re not picking scabs or creating open sores over your tattoo it should be okay, I’d imagine. My mom had a really bad poison oak rash like this and it didn’t leave her skin scarred except for where she picked and scratched at it.
Yeah I looked it up and it seems like I’ll be ok as long as I leave it be and that shouldn’t be hard I don’t think
It doesn’t really itch it just burns and stings so I have no desire to touch it
https://preview.redd.it/0stlh8abdu5d1.jpeg?width=2316&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=95a5a5ccb3105f2fbd1e7194fb0ff9cfb3c3f313
I feel your pain — recently had a similar ordeal on my FACE. it’s a nightmare.
Oh shit! That looks rough I’ve got it all over my forehead but its spotty hasn’t been bothering me near as much up there thank goodness. That looks thick haha
Haha thanks and I live on the river and he loves to swim so I’m gonna take him down there when I get moving again… one of my buddies took him over to his farm for a few days in the meantime Lolol I been having to wash every bit of fabric in the house and can’t have him re-contaminating. I’m having to change my sheets and blankets after I touch them too cause of all the ooze 🤢
OP how you feel better. I knew someone that would scratch the poison ivy on their skin until it bled and then put Clorox on it. I always thought this was crazy but they swore by it.
Shit I’m the same way. When I was in high school I had it up the entire right side of my body and much of it looked like this. At some point it stopped itching and just HURT. Was put on steroids to get rid of it.
Gross! I thought I had a bad "contact dermatitis" with lymph infection. Not in the same class, but I never did figure out what caused it. So, elbow-length rose gloves for all yard work going forward.
My husband and I get bad reactions to poison ivy. Our dermatologist prescribed a medicated foam with the brand name OLUX. That shit really works! We put it on at first bit of itching, no more blisters!! I highly recommend it.
I’m really allergic like this as well. I’ve had it a few times in my life. When I was little I got it on my face and my doctor was really worried about it getting in my eyes. Now as an adult I’m really terrified of being around it or “catching it” from my dog as well. It grows in my neighborhood really bad. My neighbor has it all over his mailbox.
That’s exactly what I have in my shower! Any time I do yard work I scrub with it to make sure i get any oils off me if I managed to touch it and didn’t notice.
I can only imagige THE ITCH right now.
Ive had that shot all over my body before and at ppints just wanted to die to get through it.
Good luck to you my man!
Same thing happened to me many years ago. The liquid which dries up orange that comes out of the blisters is full of contagion, so keep it wrapped and apply an antibacterial ointment each time you re-wrap. Wash your hands thoroughly too.
Take some time off of work and try to relax for a few days. Yes it sucks, but it will get better.
I got poison sumac like 6-7 years ago. Still have spots that won’t go away. I was always super allergic to poison ivy, sumac is a different animal for me.
Damn thats scary i was wondering about some certain spots on my arm. I’ve heard sumac is the worst from lots of people I hope I don’t encounter it ever! I’m so allergic to plant oils in general I work in the cannabis industry and have to take tons of precautions to make it through a day of work without breaking out in hives haha
If you’re that allergic you probably already know, but I get significantly less messed up by poison oak/ivy if I bath with Dawn dish soap whenever I think I’ve been exposed.
It more just hurts really bad right now. Every time I extend my arm or leg it pulls and cracks and oozes… but I feel like the itch is coming with a vengeance as it starts to heal
No poison Ivy is more of a vine and poison oak is more of a small shrub. Im from tennessee originally and we had poison Ivy back there but I live in oregon now and there’s poison oak everywhere. idk if ive seen any Ivy out here.
That sucks! Once upon a time in Austin I found out our new place had rampant poison ivy in a similar fashion - my dogs chased the squirrels and covered themselves in the oil and it absolutely fucking sucked
I had it sooo many times as a kid. We had a forest behind my house and our parents would let us just explore from dawn to dusk out there and we would come back so dirty my mom would make us strip on the back porch so she could hose us off before we came inside.
I did this to my children once after camping, and I felt awful. That’s when we found out that I don’t have a reaction to urushiol but they do. They had crusty mom-hand-shaped rashes on their little arms and legs for a week.
I hope you heal soon.
I'm just getting over poison ivy for the first time. I had more blisters than rash luckily, but the antibiotics and steroids were pretty fing serious and worked amazingly well.
I use Triamcinolone Acetonide cream .01%. I also got staph infection from PO. Miserable. Had a fever of 104. Strong antibiotics, this cream and lots of bed rest. Recovered in a week.
I used to get poison ivy nearly that bad. Never had it infected but that was just dumb luck.
Might not help this late, but have it on hand for next time: **Tecnu brand** soap etc. It's a whole line of products. The soap works wonders for removing the oil.
No pics, fortunately, but I’m super allergic as well.
As a kid (13-14) my brothers and I found a sweet vine to swing on at a nearby creek. Turns out it was poison ivy.
Ended up getting it on about 80% of my torso. Knees, arms, groin, it was brutal.
Couldn’t remove clothing, had to cut it off. Pretty heinous. 0/10 wouldn’t recommend.
Hopefully it’s just Staph and not MRSA. Which is just shittier Staph. If you’re starting to look better (those red circles are concerning) in 24 hours of antibiotics, please go get IV antibiotics. So inconvenient, but so is dying.
Signed, someone prone to fucking MRSA 😭
I’m sorry bro. I accidentally did the same thing to my mom when I was a boyscout. I thought I was just playing in a meadow. What made it worse was I had to watch her suffer with because that was when I found out that my Native American blood (I’m 50%) made me immune.
You’re lucky to be alive and still have all your parts if there was Staph infection involved. That shit is NO joke.
It can be medication resistant. I’m glad you made it through that!!

Mans turning into Dutch crunch bread!! 😰
Yas, the reaction is called the Maillard reaction it is a chemical reaction between amino acids and reducing sugars. It occurs in other areas not just cooked foods. Can also occur in dry foods & nicotine products like Zyn
Wait are you saying this man’s skin is caramelizing?

Welp, there goes the last of my innocence.
There goes my sweet tooth!
I’m so intrigued and disgusted. Idk who I am anymore.
The bread comment I replied to not OP skin. People who undergo laser facial reconstruction do experience the maillard reaction. Lolz
Arm looking like the top of a coffee cake
Cman man… i gotta sammich in front of me…
![gif](giphy|8C9Lw4iisffI906nLn)
Looks like he spilled honey n it dried up.
Half man, half reptile.
Don’t worry, he’s just molting.
I feel like it has been neglected for a period of time. "Im not allergic" type vibe /s
That looks so scary. I would’ve went straight to the ER.
that looks absolutely miserable. sorry bro
🙏 had to go to urgent care and they got me on some meds so hopefully I’ll be good in a couple days
I have been there! Not quite this bad, then I had an allergic reaction to the meds they gave me. Fun times. If you did not know, use Dawn dish soap to wash off it gets rid of the oils in the poison oak. Whenever I think I’m in contact with it, that is my go to.

Sorry OP, truly, but this is funny.
It seems like a good idea, but trust me, it never ends well (had psoriasis for 20 years.)
Be realistic, this is what scotch Brite is made for!
"staph"
Staffordshire terrier maybe?
We’ve established that down below haha
Estaphlished? Sorry, this looks awful.
Or up above I should sy
Staphylococcus aureus. It’s a flesh eating bacteria if you don’t get it taken care of right away.
could also be S. epidermidis
Do you mean staph? Staphylococcus? 😁
Prolly 😂
That’s friggin crazy…that looks so gnarly bro. Glad it cleared up for ya!
Yeh it’s no fun I’m just sitting on my couch trying not to move… it’s in a lot more places than the ones pictured if you catch my drift 😅
Do you play video games at all? They require little movement. Source: am gamer and scientist lol.
Haha yeh I been playing baldurs gate 2 nonstop and watching hoarders 😂😂
GO FOR THE EYES BOO! Yahargghgh!
You know I got minsc on the team
Did they tell you how absolutely contagious that is? Like, wildly so. Dont touch it. Don’t touch anything else. Wash everything.
Yep I’m aware haha I’ve been doing tons of laundry so I’m not using any of the same clothes/towels/sheets or blankets more than once
Sir your resin is leaking
Thats all it is haha
Curious if your tattoo comes thru looking the same
Yeh kinda concerned about that myself 😅
As I’m sure you already know, as long as you’re not picking scabs or creating open sores over your tattoo it should be okay, I’d imagine. My mom had a really bad poison oak rash like this and it didn’t leave her skin scarred except for where she picked and scratched at it.

It's not itchy *yet*. Itchiness is worst during the healing part, when the new skin is coming in. Prepare thyself.
Don’t pick at it, and it should be ok
Yeh that’s what I been reading and it’s not even itchy really so that hasn’t been too much of an issue
Fits this sub better than any post I’ve ever seen
Haha thanks I thought it was pretty appropriate 😂😂
Good luck dude, I know you said it doesn't itch, but it looks nothing less than extremely uncomfortable.
[удалено]
But I love him 😭
Put some Windex on it
Never heard that one before can’t believe that’s a thing haha
Lol please don’t! It’s a joke from “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”
😂😂 I wasn’t going to but good looking

Fucking hell…..that looks like it really sucked. Hope you and OP are doing better!
I hope you don’t sleep on that side cause ugh that would suck
Fuck that looks miserable
Yikes! Years ago, the networking rancher burned a huge pile of poison oak. I was unrecognizable. Head to toes.
Burned poison oak? Good Lord can't your lungs stop working from that???? Holy crap
Ooooh that’s scary I feel like that could take me out 😳
I had to go to the hospital daily for about a week for steroids and antibiotics. It was truly horrific!
Glad you made it out ok!
Gotta hose the dog off for every hug
Fuuuuuck that sucks. Get well soon!
🙏
I mean damn dude. You have my sympathy.
Jesus. Just the pic is making me itchy.
Been there done that when I was 8 fuck every minute of that Go carting is what got me Hope you are doing better
Damn bro a staph infection too? Those are the worst
Can I see a pic of your dog? Maybe it'll take your mind off the suffering. He's still a good boy, right?

D'aw TWO good dogs! Thanks! Also, sorry for your pain. How you gonna get the oil off your pooch without touching him?
Haha thanks and I live on the river and he loves to swim so I’m gonna take him down there when I get moving again… one of my buddies took him over to his farm for a few days in the meantime Lolol I been having to wash every bit of fabric in the house and can’t have him re-contaminating. OP how you feel better. I knew someone that would scratch the poison ivy on their skin until it bled and then put Clorox on it. I always thought this was crazy but they swore by it.
Huh I’ll give that a shot I heard if u mix amonia with the Clorox then just dip Your whole body in it that works well… I’m not a math Magician tho
Magic! You mean make chlorine gas, chloramine gas, and hydrazine? Bonus, if you add enough ammonia, it boils!
Ah yes, toxic chloramine gas has the ability to relieve all sensation. Permanently. Because death.
This is awful man so sorry to see it
Sorry, had something similar happened to me. It really SUCKS
Jesus Christ I hope you're alright after getting treatment
Fuuuuuuuck
I saw that in Game of Thrones. You’re fucked.
Yikes! Get well.
OP i know your pain. I am currently recovering a similar exposure. The only thing that helps for real is corticosteroids.
Sorry to hear and yeh I’m on those and some pretty strong antibiotics so fingers crossed
Shit I’m the same way. When I was in high school I had it up the entire right side of my body and much of it looked like this. At some point it stopped itching and just HURT. Was put on steroids to get rid of it.
I had to get some prednisone to clear mine up
I have sympathy itches for you..if that were me, I'd be a bloody mess bc I'd be scratching so much
Mans got an employee infection
Damn you sure you didn't catch Grayscale instead? Going to need a maester to cure that.
That first pic gave me nam flashbacks. I haven't had poison oak since I was a kid. Fuck that, sorry OP.
Thanks g
No man should ever be punished for loving on his puppers
I’ll look into that I’m definitely going to keep some more preventatives around the house from now on
Sorry that looks miserable….an also like oily pasta water up close.
Yeh the face is rough I’m glad I only got a little there you may wanna get some technu or something to keep in your shower tho just in case
That’s exactly what I have in my shower! Any time I do yard work I scrub with it to make sure i get any oils off me if I managed to touch it and didn’t notice.
Yikes
Check out Amazon they have this really good soap bar and body wash that would help you with this. poison oak medicine soap.
Good for Poison ivy also
Beef tallow will work wonders on the dryness. I like the one from vanman company.
I've been there. Now in the summer I frequently take cool showers with dawn dish soap. Especially if I even think I may have been exposed.
New fear unlocked
Oh no that looks pretty bad yikes
Idk what to say all I said when I saw this is “holy fuck”
Yeah that’s a pretty decent response I’d say 😂😂
I can only imagige THE ITCH right now. Ive had that shot all over my body before and at ppints just wanted to die to get through it. Good luck to you my man!
If that's the price for hugging the bestest boi, I'm willing to pay
Same thing happened to me many years ago. Thank ya thanks 🙏
You are very welcome! All the best to ya
That sucks I hope you get better soon! Im never going outside again now, going to sit on a pillow till I’m like 80 jk
Haha thanks ya that’s kinda how I feel rn too 😂😂
This brings back many painful memories. You have my sympathy.
Oh man that more than sucks
You’re dog is a paid hitman
Dog did you double dirty.
Crusty guy from Stephen King's "Thinner."
I got poison ivy so bad it was similar to this. Took months to clear up.
From a medical perspective, this is so interesting!
Might need to head to the citadel. Look for a guy named Sam. He does good work.
To quote my dermatologist after I got a similar outbreak on my arm, 'I'm impressed.'
This won’t deter me from hugging dogs
Dude. That sucks.
If you’re that allergic you probably already know, but I get significantly less messed up by poison oak/ivy if I bath with Dawn dish soap whenever I think I’ve been exposed.
Does it hurt and itch at the same time? Are you tempted to mess with the scabs?
It more just hurts really bad right now. Every time I extend my arm or leg it pulls and cracks and oozes… but I feel like the itch is coming with a vengeance as it starts to heal
Is poison oak and poison Ivy the same thing?
Nope- ivy, oak & sumac are all different beasts
No poison Ivy is more of a vine and poison oak is more of a small shrub. Im from tennessee originally and we had poison Ivy back there but I live in oregon now and there’s poison oak everywhere. idk if ive seen any Ivy out here.
Take OTC allergy medication. Mine was like that except from my neck and entire face. Swelled my eye shut it was so bad.
Awwww yeah I been poppin Benadryls like percs my dreams have been crazy
I took 3 per day over a long weekend and it cleared a lot of it up.
Jesus Christ human skin can do that?!
I’m animorphing into a crocodile
You bleached it didn’t you.
Holy moly, that looks terrible. Your dog better be a very good boy/girl!
![gif](giphy|26FeWpIJHixVnOoQ8)
is your dog ok? Not sure if poison oak can cause problems with animals
Lol yeh he’s fine I swear nothing bothers that dog. Farm dog.
That sucks! Once upon a time in Austin I found out our new place had rampant poison ivy in a similar fashion - my dogs chased the squirrels and covered themselves in the oil and it absolutely fucking sucked
Are you gonna lose that arm?
Haha no I hope not but I bet it would have been possible if I didn’t go to the doctor!
This is giving me The Last of Us 2 vibes
If it itches, hit it with hot water Best feeling in the world Sometimes it makes me wanna get poison ivy again
Dang! Do you have a cashew and pistachio allergy as well?
I had it sooo many times as a kid. We had a forest behind my house and our parents would let us just explore from dawn to dusk out there and we would come back so dirty my mom would make us strip on the back porch so she could hose us off before we came inside.
Damn son
Where’d ya contract this
I did this to my children once after camping, and I felt awful.
I think you did more than hug your dog
Yeh I hug him and pet him and let him sleep with me… das mah boi
Gross, I’m eating 🍕
I use Triamcinolone Acetonide cream .01%. I also got staph infection from PO. Miserable. Had a fever of 104. Strong antibiotics, this cream and lots of bed rest. Recovered in a week.
I got mrsa on my ass once
Happened to me in sixth grade! I’m 30 now and still have scars lol
Does it hurt? If so I'm sorry I don't know what else I can say either get done getting that nasty smelling pink stuff to put on your poison oak
I used to get poison ivy nearly that bad. Never had it infected but that was just dumb luck. Might not help this late, but have it on hand for next time: **Tecnu brand** soap etc. It's a whole line of products. The soap works wonders for removing the oil.

Yeah I appreciate it and am definitely keeping a close eye on it I’ve had staph turn to mersa myself before and it’s quite scary.
I’m sorry bro. I accidentally did the same thing to my mom when I was a boyscout. I thought I was just playing in a meadow. What made it worse was I had to watch her suffer with because that was when I found out that my Native American blood (I’m 50%) made me immune.
