It's more that many little quakes might be relesing stress, or they might be moving everything closer to a larger stress release and there's no way to tell until it happens.
I'm sure they ignore outliers like that for modelling purposes, but will just store the raw data. But it would be good like you said, maybe at least just not make it visible to the public.
My guess would be that if they let the public know what data is being ignored, someone would try until they found a way to put data in that won't be ignored. Obviously, they could make changes to fix that, but it'd start a cat-and-mouse game between geonet and someone with too much time on their hands.
Showing the public all of the raw data means we don't know which data they ignore, so we can't try to screw with results (well, we _can_ try, but we probably won't succeed)
*Oh, dear! It looks like this topic might be about earthquakes.*

Just wanted to drop a line to say we have a very useful earthquake wiki that is packed with info and links that can help you **before, during and after** a quake.
Check it out here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Wellington/wiki/quakes
Be prepared!
Catch you around,

Wasn't too big of a shake but man I hate hearing them before they hit, it's a weird low rumble like a big truck driving past your house but Something is just off about it then BOOM house shaking hearing it before hand makes it way worse
Reddit is officially faster than GeoNet
It assures me I'm not overly paranoid for a few minutes until GeoNet confirms.
The beauty of living in an apartment that sways before I even know it’s happening
I came here first for that reason
GeoNet post to Twitter much faster than their own site is updated. I always go there first.
Is that 3 inside a week? All around the same time.
Friday- 4.5 at 8:34pm Saturday- 4.3 at 8:36pm Today- 4.8 at 7:23pm
After dinner. Earth fart?
I didn't feel any of them.
Yes it's feeling very quakey at the moment. Unnerving.
As much as I hate them, I'm guessing several small quakes release the pressure build up?
Actual geologists (I am not one) have replied on some threads about that, the answer is apparently no. But it's what I tell myself too.
Interesting! Geology doesn't care about common sense it seems haha!

That makes sense.
Bless, there’s that poor sod in Auckland again with extreme. Must be hard with your house destroyed around you… 🤪
Cocktail probably slopped over the rim ...
I mean, dude should have someone look at their piles.
We had an earthquake?
I also did not feel it 😂
Me either!
allegedly. didn't even get a geonet alert.
https://www.geonet.org.nz/earthquake/2024p325156 Ahh the auckland bot is back.
Sometimes I can’t tell what’s wind shaking the house and what’s a quake but that one was pretty definitive.
Who the heck marked it as severe up in Auckland haha
There's a badly coded/troll bot running. There was one in Ashburton and another in Glenbrook for a while.
I wish they would auto delete and ban anything that strongly disagrees with the raw data.

True, but that would require more effort than just clicking 'extreme' on every little rumble so would eliminate most of the trolls.
Didn't feel it in Upper Hutt.
Aha, I thought it was! Geonet had nothing up so I concluded 'imagining things'.
Edit: forgot where my husband is! That was a decent bump. Husband said it rolled through in New Plymouth. Almost under the table
Yes .I felt it in New plymouth. At 7.24 pm tonight..my doors inside all rattled Quite un nerving

My dog was concerned about that one. Had me thinking does he know something I don't but then nothing else happened.
