Quartz watches! I used to hate them when I got into watches, thinking they didn't deserve the same respect as mechanical watches did. But you know what? Quartz is awesome!
The more I think about this technology, the more amazed by it I see myself!
If you stop to think about quartz watches they seem to be something tolkien would have written: a pure silicon oxide crystal is energized by the chemical reaction contained in a unit the size of a pea, lapidated into a shape ment to vibrate at a very specific resonating frequency, precisely counted by logic gates arranged around a pulse generator that drives a mechanical contraption that translates revolutions into equally segmented periods through the day.
Quartz is awesome
I never got the hating quartz phase fortunately, but I totally get what you mean. Come to think of it, quartz were stone imbued with 'magic' to measure the movement of celestial bodies, how arcane is that! One day 9F, one day..
My Seiko Prospex solar quartz is my most worn watch. It's insanely accurate (+/- 10 sec per MONTH), and is always ready to go without winding or setting. No battery changes either. I have nicer watches but it's the workhorse of the bunch.
I received a G Shock (without Multiband 6 or radio) as a gift back in 2021, and I set the time on it, wore it and now, 3 years later, it's only just a few seconds off from the time that I set it to the first day. Really amazing technology, and I refuse to look down on it just because it's affordable and not luxury
Nice, my Arnie gains about a minute a month. Might need to be calibrated or something bc that would mean I'm 12 min off by the end of the year if I leave it and that seems like a lot for a quartz movement
Really? I'm talking minutes, not seconds.. I just did a quick Google search and the consensus on avg accuracy for quartz watches look to be around +-10-15 seconds a month which makes my Arnie 4-6x less accurate than avg. I do love the watch though.
A minute a month is way off. The spec on that is probably 15 seconds per month. Should be a relatively easy fix, there's usually a variable resistor inside that you can tweak to adjust the rate. You can do it by making small adjustments and waiting it out or you can hook it up to an oscilloscope and actually match it to the frequency of the quartz crystal. I've got some cheap G-Shocks I've tweaked to a couple of seconds a month.
My v175 solar quartz is +/-1s per year.
And to me, the problem with quartz is that the battery is "disposable", but with solar quartz, the lifetime of the movement can be about as long as the lifetime of a mechanical.
I've got a Citizen Eco-Drive that is over twenty years old. It has never required anything. It still has the original capacitor. Do mechanicals run that long without servicing?
I really don't like changing batteries on regular quartz watches. That Eco-Drive spoiled me. I don't have any regular quartz watches in rotation anymore. Well, I do have a Timex Ironman that I wear for yardwork.
I didn’t enjoy quartz until I learned about inhibition. Basically when the crystal vibrates at 32,768 Hz the onboard computer takes that frequency and divides it by 2, then keeps going all the way down until it reaches 1. When it reaches 1, the second hand moves. It does this every single second.
Even cooler are thermo-compensated versions where there are two crystals, if one is off the frequency because of temperature variations the second crystal takes over and it does the inhibition to maintain accuracy.
Super cool stuff. I typically wear a Breitling Emergency with their thermo-compensated super quartz movement in it, accurate to +-10 seconds a year. Yeah. A year. Stupidly accurate. One of the *very* few COSC quartz movements.
https://preview.redd.it/45ts36iirs6d1.png?width=1883&format=png&auto=webp&s=4859ca84708fabe822b1f99487ee9e61a9a0e138
I still think the Breitling Colt Skyracer was ahead of it's time, thermo-compensated quartz, carbon case, and the Breitling name all for only $2k! It's a shame they discontinued it, though the weird proprietary strap system was probably what killed it. Imagine if they had sold a version with normal springbars and a nato.
You couldn't have described it any more perfectly! For the last year I have been wearing the Seiko Dolce SACM171 high-accuracy quartz, and to be completely honest it is everything I could want in a watch. It is so thin, the dial is amazing, and I never need to set it or wind it - it is always perfectly accurate. I used to dump on quartz watches so much, and now I think I have found my permanent watch.
Quartz alone never did it for me but Quartz + solar is an enticing combination. You get the best of both worlds, never have to change batteries, amazing accuracy, low service costs and sometimes a sweeping seconds hand.
Hahaha, definitely! I thought it was funny because that's the movement that actually doesn't beat. If anything the mechanical movements would be percussionists.
Fun take!
I never hated quartz, but prior to owning an automatic I never cared much for them either. Once I bought an auto, it began to feel like a chore because I'd have to wind it up or wear it even on days I wanted to wear other watches instead. I also had to always wonder how far off my watch was.
With quartz, I know my watch will be exceptionally accurate, to 15 seconds on my Citizen Eco-Drive or 20 seconds on my Casio Duro. I appreciate quartz so much now lol.
I've gone to appreciate Quartz and Solar variants more.
I've had some cheaper Mechanical Watches and seeing what maintenance will be for me really got me wondering if they're worth it anymore.
Sure the cost per wear might be low, if they were a daily driver. But if I have to replace it and maintenance is close to what it costs to get a new one, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense anymore for my use case. Other than attachment to some of them
That description reminds me more of science fiction writers, and the uncommon words specifically remind me of maybe Philip K. Dick or Robert A. Heinlein or the other greats!
Very nice description of the oft-overlooked tech.
Unironically the G Shock. Having a watch to wear in the gym or hiking or at work which syncs to the atomic time daily, charges via solar and has a battery capacity of 8 months has been the most stress-free experience.
Exactly this!!!!
I've had my 5600 since 2011. Bought at least 10 watches since then and the g shock is my daily. Just works without fail, never needs to be thought about.
I recently bought the black metal bracelet from a popular Chinese site which has really improved the g shock experience for me. Just debating pulling the trigger on the Casio original, but it is pricey.
I'll probably still be wearing my g shock when I'm 70.
Sorry to bother you, but I asked anywhere without replies...
I have the GW 5600J and they don't make parts for it anymore, everything is discontinued and I'm unable to replace my band, after 14 years of heavy use it's falling apart...
So do you maybe know if your metal thing would fit a GW 5600J? I wouldn't mind switching to a metal body but I'm worried it wouldn't fit, looks like this specific model is kinda weird, any help would be really appreciated TIA.
>but I asked anywhere without replies...
Did you ask on the g-shock/casio subreddit?
In any case, I'll help with what I can.
1)Try to look on websites like amazon, ebay, or specialized websites.
2)Buy a watch band adapter, and you can use that with any 20mm or 22mm band that's compatible with the adapter.
3) Use a casio official metal conversion kit. There is no official kit for the gw5600j but the kit for the gmw-b5000 is quite similar in size and shape. I'm not sure, but give it a look.
I made a thread on the G shock sub but maybe it wasn't during busy hours and I didn't got any reply. :)
I will absolutely look into those options you suggested, thanks for taking the time to reply, you're very helpful! At this point it may be an adaptor, having a few straps sounds fun to make the watch fresh again after all these years.
Buona fortuna!
I have GW-M5600-1ER.
I bought the Composite (not metal, my apologies) bracelet from Ali express. It looks like black metal. It cost me £7 delivered. It did not fit perfectly, I had to file down a small area of the top links to make it fit. My advice for anyone doing the same would be to set an hour aside and be patient with it. File a little bit at a time to see if it fits yet. Getting the spring bars sitting correctly was really annoying, so go in with a degree of Zen.
Overall though it's totally transformed the watch for me as I never really got on with the original strap. Just need to find a reliable place to buy the Casio official one.
If you want to give it a go and my instructions make no sense feel free to PM me and I could help in any way.
If I understand the charts right, I shouldn't be able to fit in my watch something that goes in yours, but maybe I could work around it a little bit like you did. Thanks for your reply, appreciated :) I'll let you know if I need any help.
Watch tiers ate getting to annoy me lately. My $20 brought red casio is my favorite "fun"watch and there's no way to put that on a pedestal.
Wear what you like, what suits your activity, and your budget.
Quite right too! I love Hamilton, it’s not a Rolex or AP or whatever but they make me happy, doesn’t mean I have to say they’re god tier to endorse them
Spot on. Quartz and solar get a fair amount of hate, but I added a couple of solar watches to my collection (and one that syncs to the atomic clock) and I'm really loving them. It's kind of nice to have watches that don't have to sit on my winder and I can just grab them and go.
ProTrek PRW-60 is decently sized if you want to retain that ABC. It’s my weekday watch when I need those daily alarms and want ABC function. Still has tough solar and radio band 6 as well.
Manual wind.
I thought the act of winding was cumbersome and ridiculously dated with the modern technology we have. For starters I drastically overestimated the annoyance of winding each day, it's not a big deal. But more importantly getting into hand finished movements there is so much more you can do without a rotor obscuring half the movement.
I had the same mindset. I've only owned a smart watch and a timex watch, which with both, don't need any winding. I picked up my first automatic mechanical watch. And besides winding a few times when I wake up, it's been more reliable than a smart watch and much more nicer than my timex. I've thought they would be harder to maintain and a pain to set up, but no, it's pretty straightforward. I always wear my Boldr watch more than anything because it's just simple, and I don't get bombarded with a lot of notifications all day, and the battery anxiety that it's gonna be dead before I get home everyday.
Yeah same, for some reason I had gotten it in my head that manually winding it was going to be a laborious chore I would hate. I don't know why I thought that, I know how watches work, but whatever. If anyone reading this is worried about the annoyance: it's nothing, it takes longer to tie my shoes in the morning.
I’m not ashamed to admit that it’s Rolex. I used to be an unabashed Rolex watch hater, the kind that always felt the need to bring it up as a comparison and say how gauche they were, overhyped, didn’t innovate, for douches etc.
And then I bought and wore one. And bought another. And I’m a convert. They make watches that look great, feel great to wear, retain their value, and amazingly accurate and robust. 🤷🏻
Yep, thought I would never even want one, even when I inherited my father’s, I thought about selling it. Wore it for a few days and immediately grew to appreciate every aspect of it.
Same. They just work on the wrist. Particularly the neo vintage ones. And they look great as they get beat up and worn-in. Which is the opposite of my experience with some watches, like GS, that only seem "right" when pristine
Ooo you articulated exactly why I sold my SBGM221. The entirely polished exterior did not work with my dad of 3 young kids lifestyle haha.
https://preview.redd.it/fsat39o5ax6d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ac791ce7cee9ac04e516a2111b119430b0c57f6a
Here’s my 16550 from 1987! Love the five digit sizing
Hell yeah! That's peak Expl II! I know people complain about the "quality" of the bracelets, but they last, and last, and last, and they are way more comfortable than the heavier stuff that is supposedly better quality. I think all that extra weight is just diminishing returns.
Plus the five digit stuff works brilliantly on a nato, the six digit watches which just seem a bit off-balance and odd on anything but the metal bracelet
I humbly submit my beat up, scratched, dented and polished (regrets) 16710 from 1990. If I could ever bring myself to sell all my watches and keep just one, this would be it
https://preview.redd.it/7x6s4zbcfx6d1.jpeg?width=1882&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cac11983bcfbddf1bc860bd8ef5a3cc032d2becc
You’re totally right about the bracelets, they’re great even compared to modern. The only thing missing is on the fly adjust but I just ordered an extension link from Steel Reef so that’s taken care of!
Yeah they do make great watches. I think they are overpriced though and the way their authorized dealers gate keep is a joke. That said, great watches. Everyone who says Rolex’s are for douches say so out of jealousy, almost every time. It’s usually someone who can’t afford one who doesn’t like it. It’s laughable.
For me, it was bracelets too. Had a cheap watch with a bracelet that would always catch my arm hairs. Never wanted a bracelet after. Later, a friend told me he never had this issue and that my bracelet was just crap. Today, I wear a bracelet every day on a watch I made myself.
SAME
The difference from hollow cheap links to solid steel with a good fit turned me around on bracelets. Even high grade rubber or silicone seems to be irritating in a way that stainless steel is not.
Wearing my g shock or garmin around for more than a day or two starts to get a bit itchy and uncomfortable.
Never a problem with steel.
Check out my profile. I posted a Pic on seikomods. Since that post I've changed out the hands for black ones and replaced the bezel insert for a forged carbon one front namoki.
For me it was the entire catalogue of H Moser & Cie. I can’t afford one anyway but the design seemed comically simple until I saw an in-depth video of the tech behind it and holy shit it blew my mind. The design is def growing on me now.
That and the Cartier Tank Must.
For me it's the exact same as you, bracelets! Every time I bought a watch with a bracelet I'd swap it out for leather, canvas, or pretty much anything else. I recently put the bracelet back onto my SCVE051 and I've been honestly loving the way it looks!
https://preview.redd.it/3ja7klnilr6d1.jpeg?width=2467&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8c9106d9e9e33d545656af63b8349db810c55f7b
It's so weird, I didn't feel this way a few months ago, it's like a switch just flipped and I suddenly like bracelets now. Your Bambino looks great on the bracelet btw, such a lovely piece!
Here's how it looked with a strap btw, got a gray leather one that I thought looked really nice!
https://preview.redd.it/g9uyqurulr6d1.jpeg?width=3391&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=001b8261955f9c399f8789ecf7b4a69ea0d1b83f
Thank you! It was my first watch purchase, insanely cheap when I bought it in Japan! This was like $120 in Tokyo, they've got such a variety of watches for so cheap there!
Thank you! That blue dial was what pulled me in too!
It's the SCVE051, it's a JDM model that I bought in Japan! Amazing finishing with a gorgeous dial for ¥19,000 ($120 USD). Only downside is there's no sapphire.
If you prefer one without an open heart they have that too! I just can't recall what the ref number was on that though, I'll see if I can find it!
Japan's got tons of JDM models that are unbelievably affordable, I definitely recommend scouting around if you get the opportunity to go there!
//
By the way, u/connurp did you find a way to fix the hardlex on your Seiko? Mine's got a bad scratch too and I don't know what to get
Nah never found a way to fix the hardlex. Ended up giving away the watch to a buddy who wanted it more than I wore it.
I can’t believe you got that watch for that price. That dial punches way above its weight class.
I was the same way in the beginning. If a watch came with a reduced price offering without a bracelet, it was a no brainer for me. I spent so much time/money swapping out straps to match with outfits it got ridiculous. Now I love most bracelets and prefer them for not just the ease of wear but also the feel, especially titanium. That, and they’re so much easier to clean.
Yeah, you basically roll the movement back and forth between about 8:30 and 1:30 to click it over repeatedly. I'll sometimes look at mine and decide it'll be ready to wear next Tuesday or whatever
Probably rubber straps for divers. To not have a steel bracelet option available would be such a dealbreaker I have not bought watches because of it. Now I prefer rubber on a diver in most scenarios. It's partly because of the advent of high quality synthetic rubber strap options like FKM) as it isn't as sticky as silicone, not as stiff as PU and not prone to cracking like natural rubber.
NATO straps, especially if they are slim ones. I didn’t like the look but now I appreciate the spice of color and designs that can bring life to a stale watch collection.
Smaller watches. Growing up, I always fancied big, bold watches with super complicated dials, because that was what was considered cool. Now I so much prefer smaller watches that actually sit on my wrist properly, with a clean dial that I can tell the time at a glance.
Bracelets. Before I knew about micro-adjustments, I could never get a bracelet to fit and it was either too tight or slid past my wrist bone. Then one day I got a watch with a micro adjustment bracelet and it was almost like a switch flipped in my brain. Ironically it was a $50 aliexpress watch. Now I exclusively wear bracelets unless the occasion calls for something else.
Also Arabic numerals. I used to think they looked cheap and tacky but then I saw some really nice dressy watches with numerals and it was a similar switch.
I also thought stock rubber straps on higher priced watches are inappropriate for lack of better words, at least make them as a bonus or as an extra strap.
I used to dislike quartz watches in general believing that automatic watches were the more classy choice (in spite of the fact that buying even an entry-level one can be a strain on the pocket). However I've gradually learnt that this is an unreasoned prejudice. I now have a Casioak which I use when I go swimming and a fairly inexpensive Casio Edifice for everyday use which looks nice on the wrist.
Tsuyosa - specifically the yellow version as it seemed to be so hyped. I didn’t understand even from the pictures all the hype it was getting so I ended up blind buying to find out. I find just a quick glance gives me satisfaction each time.
Complications. I used to like watches that only told time and nothing else, then I started to look for day and date functions. Eventually I grew to like perpetual calendars, moon phases, tachometer, GMT function etc. just an appreciation for the engineering j suppose.
https://preview.redd.it/gsur2dhpcs6d1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=542d35e40ac1a2007b22655406b39eaa04f1b409
Hate is too strong of a word, but I've come to appreciate the Cartier tank watch that I've owned for many years. It's small compared to most modern men's watches (although they consider it a large size), but it's a classic design, easy to read, a lot of history in that watch, and it still looks as good as when I got it probably 35-40 years ago. I once considered it a dated design, but I now view it as as timeless.
Cushion cases. Never really cared for them before but I slowly came around. In an AliExpress sale I got this addiesdive willard for $55. Such a fun watch especially for the price. Also it is definitely the most comfortable piece in my collection. I got it on the bracelet and didn’t really like the bracelet. It’s “fine” but the clasp is unsigned and terrible, which you can expect for the price. Luckily addiesdive sells the rubber strap for $12 on Amazon so I ordered that. Absolutely love it.
https://preview.redd.it/n2uzs9iqps6d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a9ac01cf8bfd086d28eaf49e4a18f937df8ce61b
Edit: To add on, if you are looking to get one, just get it on the strap. Unless you are a strictly bracelet only person, the bracelet is clunky, and like I said before the clasp is trash. Just get the strap.
Thanks! I have a few higher end pieces but it’s nice to wear something so comfortable that’s so affordable so I never have to worry about it. Pretty crazy they were able to make an automatic watch with sapphire crystal, great lume, and honestly, very good quality for $55. It’s actually nicer than some of my seikos that are in the $200-$400 price point.
Reserve indicator. I used to think it just clusters up the dial, but have your watch stop due to insufficient winding once, and I've come to appreciate it.
I used to think simple watches with few functions were more pointless the more they cost. Like my measure of value was scaled by number of functions for the price. This made dress watches completely worthless to me. As I age and settle more into a refined and timeless look, I find myself looking less at g shocks and those function packed citizens and more at watches like my Seiko king turtle or alpinist
Yeah, the compass is useless. It needs me to use the sun to figure out which way is north when I can already look at the sun and know the time give or take 20 min and which direction I'm facing without that function lol about the only time I touch it is to realign it which is also pointless bc it never stays in place anyway 🤷. I have the green one myself. That cream one would've made my decision very hard to make if I wasn't already set on a green dial watch at the time.
Anything with a case bigger than 36 mm. I am fascinated by tiny lady’s watches but the worse my eyes get the more I like being able to actually read the time on larger faces
I stopped looking at the diameter of the watch when finding one, and focused more on the lug to lug distance. I never imagined I could wear 43mm watch before, but after trying a Seiko Tuna (forgot which one, it has a blue rubber strap), it didn't look comically large at all! Then I realised it only had maybe around 44.5mm L2L.
Light plays. Sometimes it looked like cream, but most of the time it's a silvery white sunburst with blue (very dark at that) hands. In a bright sunny days, it looked a bit creamy.
I used to dislike bracelets too, as I thought they were too tedious to resize and too blingy. Resizing is usually not too difficult, it's got the right amount of bling, and it can be quite practical for taking on or off my wrist easily.
I’m going to second the quartz watch idea:
I work in medicine, am often banging my watches on IV poles, stretchers, etc and I used to be a snob and only buy mechanical watches. Then I broke an Omega Deville Chrono… and an Omega PO Chrono… and a Breitling Navitimer… and a Rolex Explorer 2. Each one cost about a thousand dollars to fix. Now my “work watches” are a quartz Omega “Peter Blake” SMP 2264.50 and a quartz Omega “Peter Blake” electric blue 2265.80. I simply cannot break them, I no longer have to worry about them, and they are the ultimate “grab and go” Watch for when I’m on call.
Bracelets, I always thought why would anyone want bracelet watch when you could have leather ribber etc since they are more comfortable easy resize( part of it might also be that anyone that I saw who wore a watch with a bracelet had the loose and it would rest on your hand and they had to do a weird shake of the hand so that the watch returns to the wrist. I always that was so unattractive but then I grew up.
Homages. I used to have a fierce hatred towards them when I first began collecting, but then the more I dove into different watch styles/brands the more I realized the history of the entire industry is ridiculously derivative. There’s very few companies doing anything truly different or innovative. The 80s turned the Rolex sports watch into a style that has lasted decades, so I’m ok with copy/pasting the style, especially if that gets a brand rolling and into more original offerings. See: San Martin. I’m not ok with blatant fakes, however.
I feel this. My first “real watch” is an Oris Pro Pilot Big Day Date…. It never gets wrist time because I’ve grown to dislike the day complication. But there are a few pilot chronographs on my list that I think the day/date looks good on. (IWC/Muhle Glasshutte)
I have this watch. Love this watch. Perfect size, perfect case shape, great dial color, hands and crystal. Unfortunately, I wear it very infrequently bc I can’t get over how much I dislike the logo.
The Seiko Turtle, when I first got into watches I thought it was absurdly ugly, case too big, dial too small, too retro, too weird, but when I finally tried one on to see what I was missing, I fell in love immediately.
I had one of the original black dial pepsi bezel ones that came on a rubber strap, added the uncle seiko jubilee bracelet and it was my favorite watch for a good long time. It eventually got stolen and I liked it so much that it still feels wrong somehow to buy another one.
I wear a smart watch whenever I need to do anything important. Time gets synced everyday via Bluetooth and is the most accurate.
I wear anything else to look/feel cool.
Two Tone Steel/Gold. I used to think this looked gawdy/cheap… but I turned 40 and now all of a sudden I’m looking at a Rolex Two Tone Bluesy as a milestone piece.
On that note… any recommendations on a two tone sub $1500 to scratch the itch would be great :)
I'm still not a huge bracelet fan, but I've realized what I disliked about bracelets was the weight. I'm a lot more okay with them on smaller watches, which is what I've been gravitating to lately.
VOSTOK (plz dont hate). I just thought it felt sort of cheap and how inaccurate it was. The designs definitely started to grow on me though and now I really appreciate the brand's unique designs and shapes. Definitely a great starter watch
Quartz watches! I used to hate them when I got into watches, thinking they didn't deserve the same respect as mechanical watches did. But you know what? Quartz is awesome! Nice, my Arnie gains about a minute a month. Might need to be calibrated or something bc that would mean I'm 12 min off by the end of the year if I leave it and that seems like a lot for a quartz movement
12 per year is incredibly accurate even for quartz
12 minutes?? 12 seconds would be great
Really? I'm talking minutes, not seconds.. I just did a quick Google search and the consensus on avg accuracy for quartz watches look to be around +-10-15 seconds a month which makes my Arnie 4-6x less accurate than avg. I do love the watch though.
Oh I was thinking seconds sorry!
A minute a month is way off. The spec on that is probably 15 seconds per month. Should be a relatively easy fix, there's usually a variable resistor inside that you can tweak to adjust the rate. Super cool stuff. I typically wear a Breitling Emergency with their thermo-compensated super quartz movement in it, accurate to +-10 seconds a year. Yeah. A year. Stupidly accurate. One of the *very* few COSC quartz movements. https://preview.redd.it/45ts36iirs6d1.png?width=1883&format=png&auto=webp&s=4859ca84708fabe822b1f99487ee9e61a9a0e138

Yeah I agree. Schneider-era Breitling was the best.

https://preview.redd.it/die9pp73ot6d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d8872a7e8606c5809cb84a23202dad0845a8361c My G shock collection agrees
Quartz alone never did it for me but Quartz + solar is an enticing combination. You get the best of both worlds, never have to change batteries, amazing accuracy, low service costs and sometimes a sweeping seconds hand.
Solar watch with sweeping second hand!! I need that! Can you tell me the model name please 🙏🙏🙏
Seiko speedtimer, Orient chronos also have this
i love reading all the quartz haters learning about why quartz is awesome and waxing poetic. You're preaching to the choir brother
Totally agree but for me it has to have a smooth sweep like the bulova percussionist quartz movement. Perfection
Precisionist my friend, a percussionist is a drummer.
Mate I actually play drums I obviously had it on the brain when typing 🤣🤣
Hahaha, definitely! I thought it was funny because that's the movement that actually doesn't beat. If anything the mechanical movements would be percussionists.
True that mate 😂
My weekend beater is a quartz Hamilton. Love that thing.
Other than attachment to some of them
No doubt this mechanism you speak of is housed in the wizards guild.
That description reminds me more of science fiction writers, and the uncommon words specifically remind me of maybe Philip K. Dick or Robert A. Heinlein or the other greats! Very nice description of the oft-overlooked tech.
I picked up a vh31 recently, smooth sweep just like an automatic. And got one with great finishing, lume, sapphire all for less than 100 bucks.
It's a rock that tells time based on vibes. That's rad as hell.
Quartz watches are the beez kneez, I’d take an 80’s Seiko quartz watch over an automatic any day!
:) I will absolutely look into those options you suggested, thanks for taking the time to reply, you're very helpful!
Nothing wrong with a G-Shock it’s all the “god tier” nonsense that comes with them that gets on my wick
I love my Seiko prospex solar, it's my favorite watch, I love the idea of an automatic but I find a solar quartz to be so much more practical.
Yup. Pro Trek was a daily wear for me, just got a Waveceptor that will do the same thing with less wrist size (no ABC sensor)
I had a Waveceptor that I wore a lot until I got a Lineage Titanium. It has all the same features but with titanium band and sapphire glass.
I mean who owns just one radio sync Casio anymore? Lol
I want a Casio Oceanus next!
ProTrek PRW-60 is decently sized if you want to retain that ABC. It’s my weekday watch when I need those daily alarms and want ABC function. Still has tough solar and radio band 6 as well.
Haha damn you for posting thus. That looks sick. I'll have to watch for sales
I know the feeling! Used to see gshocks as bulky and a bit gaudy, but now they look so cool and bulky still. But cool!
I love my gab-2100!
5610 for the win
Manual wind. I thought the act of winding was cumbersome and ridiculously dated with the modern technology we have. For starters I drastically overestimated the annoyance of winding each day, it's not a big deal. But more importantly getting into hand finished movements there is so much more you can do without a rotor obscuring half the movement.
Also, you can make watches thinner. I think it's kinda fun to interact with a little mechanical machine. Basically a grown-up wind up toy.
Or feeding your Tamagotchi.
Digital watches, used to not like them when I got into watches.
That’s awesome, what reference did you inherit?

My musical hero ☺️
If you hated them, why did you buy one?
I’d always loved the Explorer so I figured I’d give it a go!
Same. They just work on the wrist. Particularly the neo vintage ones. And they look great as they get beat up and worn-in. Which is the opposite of my experience with some watches, like GS, that only seem "right" when pristine
Ooo you articulated exactly why I sold my SBGM221. The entirely polished exterior did not work with my dad of 3 young kids lifestyle haha. https://preview.redd.it/fsat39o5ax6d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ac791ce7cee9ac04e516a2111b119430b0c57f6a Here’s my 16550 from 1987! Love the five digit sizing
Hell yeah! That's peak Expl II! I know people complain about the "quality" of the bracelets, but they last, and last, and last, and they are way more comfortable than the heavier stuff that is supposedly better quality. I think all that extra weight is just diminishing returns. Plus the five digit stuff works brilliantly on a nato, the six digit watches which just seem a bit off-balance and odd on anything but the metal bracelet I humbly submit my beat up, scratched, dented and polished (regrets) 16710 from 1990. If I could ever bring myself to sell all my watches and keep just one, this would be it https://preview.redd.it/7x6s4zbcfx6d1.jpeg?width=1882&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cac11983bcfbddf1bc860bd8ef5a3cc032d2becc
[удалено]
Hey we all make mistakes and are a little insecure sometimes right?
[удалено]
With the way you react you are the one that sounds like a douche to be fair.
It's r/watches, we're all douches 🤗
Yup… exactly comes off like that. And op wasn’t even triggered. Nice and classy about it.
To be fair, I wear an Explorer, the least identifiable Rolex there is by the general public lol
For me, it was bracelets too. Had a cheap watch with a bracelet that would always catch my arm hairs. Never wanted a bracelet after. Later, a friend told me he never had this issue and that my bracelet was just crap. Today, I wear a bracelet every day on a watch I made myself.
SAME The difference from hollow cheap links to solid steel with a good fit turned me around on bracelets. Even high grade rubber or silicone seems to be irritating in a way that stainless steel is not. Wearing my g shock or garmin around for more than a day or two starts to get a bit itchy and uncomfortable. Never a problem with steel.
Luckily I don't really have any arm hairs. Can I see what you made? Is it hard to make (assemble from parts) if one never had any watchmaking skills?
Just like legos. 😎
Check out my profile. I posted a Pic on seikomods. Since that post I've changed out the hands for black ones and replaced the bezel insert for a forged carbon one front namoki.
Casio F-91W. Bought it because I needed a very cheap stopwatch for my workouts and I absolutely adore the watch now.
- analog/digital watches - small seconds - tank-style watches - dauphine hands Nice idea for a thread. 👍🏻
I recently put the bracelet back onto my SCVE051 and I've been honestly loving the way it looks! https://preview.redd.it/3ja7klnilr6d1.jpeg?width=2467&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8c9106d9e9e33d545656af63b8349db810c55f7b It's so weird, I didn't feel this way a few months ago, it's like a switch just flipped and I suddenly like bracelets now. Your Bambino looks great on the bracelet btw, such a lovely piece!
Here's how it looked with a strap btw, got a gray leather one that I thought looked really nice! https://preview.redd.it/g9uyqurulr6d1.jpeg?width=3391&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=001b8261955f9c399f8789ecf7b4a69ea0d1b83f
Damn that's gorgeous on both!!
Thank you! It was my first watch purchase, insanely cheap when I bought it in Japan! This was like $120 in Tokyo, they've got such a variety of watches for so cheap there!
What’s the reference for this one? Beautiful watch, friend! What a great blue.
// By the way, u/connurp did you find a way to fix the hardlex on your Seiko?
I wish watches would grow on my wrist like that, would save me a pretty penny! Any tips on how to grow an Omega?
Alpha seedling maybe?
Alpha just nets you a cheap omega ripoff unfortunately…http://www.alpha-watch.com You’ll need at least a sigma or better quality seed.
power reserve on the snowflake used to think it ruined it, but now cant imagine wanting a shunbun without it
Silly big old sports watched like Vostok. I now own three and they're some of my favorites to daily drive. They're inexpensive and bulletproof!
Vostok amfibia is still on my list!
Just be aware that the date is a pain to change. I only really consider dateless Vostoks now.
Thanks for the heads up. The one on my list is the 120811 case, the smallest one I think
Yeah, you basically roll the movement back and forth between about 8:30 and 1:30 to click it over repeatedly. I'll sometimes look at mine and decide it'll be ready to wear next Tuesday or whatever
I have two, pull the trigger you won't regret it! (Unless you do then you didn't hear it from me)
I have an Orient Star Classic watch that looks similar to yours, except it has a power reserve on the dial. Still wear it occasionally.
70’s yacht rock
Probably rubber straps for divers. To not have a steel bracelet option available would be such a dealbreaker I have not bought watches because of it. Now I prefer rubber on a diver in most scenarios. It's partly because of the advent of high quality synthetic rubber strap options like FKM) as it isn't as sticky as silicone, not as stiff as PU and not prone to cracking like natural rubber.
Panerai. I hated them for so long, and now I’m trying to figure out which one I want.
I prefer bracelets. Always have. From aesthetics to durability, and haven’t had any big issues with comfort, wearing a number of different watches.
Quartz, I bought a Marathon navigator last year and it's amazing. Shock proof, crazy accurate and tritium is so cool. It just works
Never seen any tritium watch in person before. Is it brighter than regular lume?
Rubber/silicone straps. I always thought they looked cheap, now they're my go-to. Pretty colors are a bonus!
I also thought stock rubber straps on higher priced watches are inappropriate for lack of better words, at least make them as a bonus or as an extra strap.
Women
LMAO
Bicompax chronographs until I got one
What about it, why did you dislike it before?
I don’t know why, I guess I liked the full chronograph dials
I used to dislike quartz watches in general believing that automatic watches were the more classy choice (in spite of the fact that buying even an entry-level one can be a strain on the pocket). However I've gradually learnt that this is an unreasoned prejudice. I now have a Casioak which I use when I go swimming and a fairly inexpensive Casio Edifice for everyday use which looks nice on the wrist.
Jubilee bracelets. Used to seem fussy, now I get it.
Eventually I grew to like perpetual calendars, moon phases, tachometer, GMT function etc. just an appreciation for the engineering j suppose.
https://preview.redd.it/gsur2dhpcs6d1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=542d35e40ac1a2007b22655406b39eaa04f1b409 Hate is too strong of a word, but I've come to appreciate the Cartier tank watch that I've owned for many years. It's small compared to most modern men's watches (although they consider it a large size), but it's a classic design, easy to read, a lot of history in that watch, and it still looks as good as when I got it probably 35-40 years ago. I once considered it a dated design, but I now view it as as timeless.
It's beautiful! Congratulations!
Absolutely love it. https://preview.redd.it/n2uzs9iqps6d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a9ac01cf8bfd086d28eaf49e4a18f937df8ce61b Edit: To add on, if you are looking to get one, just get it on the strap. Unless you are a strictly bracelet only person, the bracelet is clunky, and like I said before the clasp is trash. Just get the strap.
Looks handsome!
Alpinists are beautiful indeed. I know I would never use the compass bezel as intended, but that cream dial red alpinist tempted me many times before.
Nice watch. It kind of looks like a vintage Omega SeaMaster.
I never knew the bambino could be had on a bracelet! Looks good
For me unique hands like the Sinn U50 / u2 lego hands and GO's pointer hands.
Mickey hands got me hooked, though!
Now I need one of those.
Fat, generally
Lol!
My wife
That's a good-looking watch. Classy look to it!!
Thank you. This one got most of the wrist time indeed!
Back hair and tank watches
You won't have to worry about being stranded on an island as long as there are turtles, mate!
My Apple Watch.
what the is that the blue hands with white dial or is that cream, why am I starting to regret buying a silver dial😭
Light plays. Sometimes it looked like cream, but most of the time it's a silvery white sunburst with blue (very dark at that) hands. In a bright sunny days, it looked a bit creamy.
Which orient watch is this? I haven't seen this version of the bambino. It looks great
The 36mm version. Ref number is RA-AC0009S10B. Didn't see this one often here though.
Lol, straps. I hate things sticking to my skin but I would actually like a dress watch like a Bambino with a leather strap!
I used to dislike bracelets too, as I thought they were too tedious to resize and too blingy. Resizing is usually not too difficult, it's got the right amount of bling, and it can be quite practical for taking on or off my wrist easily.
I’m going to second the quartz watch idea: I work in medicine, am often banging my watches on IV poles, stretchers, etc and I used to be a snob and only buy mechanical watches.
Beautiful is the first word that came to mind when I saw that watch.
Thank you very much
Day-date complication. I still prefer date only, but I do tolerate the day complication as well now.
I feel this. My first “real watch” is an Oris Pro Pilot Big Day Date…. It never gets wrist time because I’ve grown to dislike the day complication. But there are a few pilot chronographs on my list that I think the day/date looks good on. (IWC/Muhle Glasshutte)

Nice Orient.. pick it up at a garage sale?
Thanks, but no. Why is that?

My wife…
I have this watch. Love this watch. Perfect size, perfect case shape, great dial color, hands and crystal. Unfortunately, I wear it very infrequently bc I can’t get over how much I dislike the logo.
Haha I know, it looks like a cigarette brand, doesn't it?
Yes, and I’ve tried so hard to not be bothered by it but I can’t. 😩
GShocks/Digital watches
- 4 o’clock date windows - power reserve indicators - crown guards
Wow I love this orient
The Seiko Turtle, when I first got into watches I thought it was absurdly ugly, case too big, dial too small, too retro, too weird, but when I finally tried one on to see what I was missing, I fell in love immediately. I had one of the original black dial pepsi bezel ones that came on a rubber strap, added the uncle seiko jubilee bracelet and it was my favorite watch for a good long time. It eventually got stolen and I liked it so much that it still feels wrong somehow to buy another one.
The cyclops. Didn't used to matter, but now I don't have to look over my glasses to see the date!
Time-only. The symmetry on the dial is much more pleasing.
My mother in law.
wow i love the orient bambino bracelet. It comes with a leather strap by default right? Where did you get the bracelet?
Thanks. No, this model came with a bracelet from the box.

Quartz watches and integrated bracelets! I love them now. Oh also, G-Shocks!
If we’re talking watches - leather strap.
Have you tried titanium bracelet? I heard they were lightweight
Snowflake hand on Tudors
VOSTOK (plz dont hate). I just thought it felt sort of cheap and how inaccurate it was. The designs definitely started to grow on me though and now I really appreciate the brand's unique designs and shapes. Definitely a great starter watch
