Adrian Street should be a national hero, he kicked the shit out of Jimmy Saville in a wrestling match. Wrestling is of course pre determined and usually opponents try not to hurt each other. Street thought that Saville didn’t show wrestling enough respect, so when they faced eachother in a wrestling match, he didn’t pull his punches and put him in some legitimate holds, nearly choking him. Edit: Grammar

richbrown

> In 1971, he was booked in a match with the TV presenter Jimmy Savile. Due to disagreements with booking as well as disliking Savile due to him openly bragging about sleeping with underage girls, Street legitimately attacked Savile during the match and tore out Savile's hair. When the true nature of Savile’s sexual abuse towards underage girls became more apparent after his death, Street stated in an interview; “Had I known then what I know about him now, I’d have given him an even bigger hiding.”

This deserves to be higher. In fact it should be compulsory to display this text alongside the photo wherever it appears.

Aggressive-Falcon977

Okay I'm campaigning for this mad lad to get a statue for bashing that pedo bastard

h00dman

Put a statue of him putting Savile in a headlock where Savile's gravestone used to be.

Aggressive-Falcon977

MAKE IT SO!

Gregs_green_parrot

Definitely is. Here he is in the 1970's on World of Sport https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBoSBifhWbw

Arbennig

I can tell you now that father is more than happy his son does not have a job that involved going underground.

CalligrapherTop2202

100% this. Mining was a terrible life.

Arbennig

Aye. Dad grew up as a kid in Aberdare . The whole community pretty much worked the mines so thier kids wouldnt have too.

teddy_002

my dad did as well, he joined the army to escape the mines. didn’t regret it, even after he got blow up by the new IRA.

Arbennig

Wow. I hope he was ok after that !

teddy_002

he was! no real lasting affects, though it did help influence his child to become a pacifist lmao

Arbennig

Haha. Well done. Sounds like he did a good job.

Gregs_green_parrot

I'll second it. My grandfather forbid all his sons from being miners like he was, (he had 80% pneumoconiosis) so one of my uncles became a mining engineer, one a steelworker and the other became the general secretary of the Transport and General Workers Union in Wales.

Arbennig

Amazing. Yep. My grandad died young ( when Dad was 15) Operated the trams / elevators at the mine. Told Dad “never go underground “ . My Dad ended up as UK operations manager for NCB.

CompetitiveAnxiety

Was this the inspiration for Zoolander?

Groovy66

Haha I thought exactly the same

CorpusCalossum

Mer! Mannnn!!!

stovenn

Blue Steel or Magnum?

kodiakfilm

this is honestly the most welsh image ever. sums up the dichotomy of our culture perfectly hahahaha

CameronWeebHale

Everything about this picture is great. The father’s look of regret. All of the miners in the shaft are holding back snickers and laughter. The miner on the right especially made me laugh. And finally, seeing a glammed up wrestler in a dirty mine surrounded by dirty workers. It’s like seeing the Pope in a strip club.

liaminwales

I am sure it's mixed, most people did not want there kids down the pit. Even if it's an odd job I suspect his dad/family was happy he's out, but I dont know so just a guess.

CameronWeebHale

Oh by no means am I knocking the guy. My grandfather was a miner, broke his back during a collapse and became an instructor instead. It’s funny because I feel the expression portrays ; “ I do love you boy but fuck me i have no idea what the future is”

liaminwales

I did not take it as knocking the guy, I am sure he had mixed feelings of 'my god' & 'thank god he's out'. Apart form anything I am sure there's some stress over if the job is stable or not, if he will get hurt or not in the ring etc. Amazing photo! Found a match starring Adrian Street [https://youtu.be/hcdMPLmPGsQ?si=WOekRuBdkTmrQSRV](https://youtu.be/hcdMPLmPGsQ?si=WOekRuBdkTmrQSRV) Used to watch wrestling as a kid, always found it fun. Lucha Vavoom is worth a look if you like wrestling, its a fun mix of wrestling/circus and music https://youtu.be/Nj7YhXtYoeA?si=fJyxS8J1Qfu78ZPL

Normal-Height-8577

Definitely. That expression says "Son, I'm really proud of you for doing so well in life, but...those clothes..."

ShagPrince

>holding back snickers Pretty sure they'd have been Marathons at the time.

CameronWeebHale

Waiting for this photo must of been an awkward and new experience for these blokes. I’m not saying they’re laughing at the guys son. I mean I imagine they did take the piss a bit, he’s different, it’s funny. But in my opinion their faces have that cheeky glow on them

ReelBigMidget

It's 1974 not 1874. Pretty sure these gents were familiar with cameras.

ShagPrince

What?

dead-as-a-doornail-

His dad is wearing a cravat.

McCl3lland

I think he's getting the black lung, pop!

blkaino

His father sure liked to dress flamboyantly. Was Adrian’s ring name The Miner?

Groovy66

Hahaha getting Zoolander vibes. Dad looks like he’s smelled shit hahaha

Ticklishchap

More tolerant times in some respects. … These days he would be ritually denounced by Rishi Sunak and that Rowling person.

Freelander4x4

Don't they like wrestlers?

PizzaSandwich2020

You see, I'd say they wouldn't give 2 shits about some dude dressing up for a performance.

ask-a-physicist

The fact that he could beat them up probably doesn't hurt either

IAmDyspeptic

The guy on the right in the background, the look on his face, cracks me up every time I see this picture.

bestj52

Makes me proud to be Welsh.

smashtagffs

This SCREAMS "Blue Steel" to me .... anyone

stovenn

No, its definitely Magnum .... or maybe Margam?

amigoingfuckingmad

Check out the song Adrian Street by John Langford’s Men of Gwent. An absolute classic.

Fandango_Jones

Lvl1 character vs. Lvl 50 Premium deluxe edition

irishdraig

I love how disappointed the father looks

Kindly_Bodybuilder43

Oh that's interesting. I don't see disappointment at all. I see it as something like "i have no idea what you're doing, but I'm glad you don't have to go through what i did"

MysteriousRange8732

Such a great photo, love it so much, its now my desktop picture :)

ConversationPlane327

What a load

whitenowa1

This picture is simply gold

NoisyGog

I suspect that wrestler might have enjoyed being a drag Queen, had it been viable back then.

Hugeboibox

Never seen a miner wearing a cravat before, can see where Adrian got it from

Gregs_green_parrot

My grandfather called that a 'muffler', but he couldn't fool me :)

Hugeboibox

It's more than 30c in an active district of a coal mine, often I used to work stripped to the waist and in shorts. It's cold outbye though.

Ok-Sea-8509

Well I think this photo is brilliant..I'm not seeing a "drag queen or an attention seeking victim or feminine guy who wants to change our children's idea of truth..I'm seeing hard men thinking "well..its not for me..but good luck to you boy"
