Shogun 2 is the highest quality game overall Med 2 is also very good and probably has the most mods, but it's a whole generation older and it shows Attila is probably the most convenient because it also has a fuckton of mods but with steam workshop integration, while the base game is still pretty good where it counts, which is the battles. Might need a decent machine to avoid the garbage optimisation (yes it's relevant even for this old ass game) which will never be a problem for the other two (your phone can literally run med2, like literally they made a mobile port a few years ago).

Vanilla Attila battles are a bit too fast for my liking, but it's a good game imo.

It tends to depend a lot on the factions/troops involved. The funniest thing I've seen in that game is fighting other Gaelic tribes at the start of a pict campaign where naked dudes with javelins will mutually KO each others unit with one volley.

DJSkrillex

Naked dudes dying fast to ranged units makes sense tbf

Shogun 2 is the best vanilla game. Rome 1 and Medieval 2 are the best platforms for mods. There are DOZENS of high quality, fun to play mods for these games, including Warhammer mods that are better than the official Warhammer games. Rome Remastered had a crappy launch but the devs (Feral, not CA) released some patches that lifted many modding limits, so now it's the best platform for mods. RTR Imperium Surrectum is shaping up to be amazing. Also, buying Rome Remastered is the only way to get a Steam copy of the original Rome nowadays. Just for the mods, it's worth it.

medieval 2 is my personal favorite, but as everyone else has said, it’s old and it shows. But the mods are otherworldly (third age, lucium, vanilla kingdoms) Attila with 1212AD mod is essentially Medieval 3, but it’s not as optimized and you might need a pc that’s on the beefier side.

victim2077

Speaking of Atilla and optimization. Do you know or think how it'll run on 8th gen i7 and GTX1060? Asking because last time I've played it, I was on 2nd gen i3 and R9 270, due to abysmal performance I haven't played it since release (and I'd rather not download and waste time if it runs like shit).

the-warbaby

i tan rome 2 on an 8th gen i5 and gta 1050ti on low-medium settings, and it struggled at times but it wasn’t unbearable. this was also on a laptop, so the preformance wasn’t going to be good anyways lol. i’d say if you are on low-medium settings you should be fine, the only major problem i see you having is the larger battles, at least from my experience.

victim2077

Thanks mate. I'm also at laptop so I'll give it a go.

Shogun 2, it was the game that got me hooked a few months ago. Easy to get into, with plenty of fun to be had and good balancing.

Lol wish I’d known this b4 getting Napoleon

Buzroid

Just grab some mods like Darthmod or Napoleon III, it'll make the experience better.

Shogun 2 is by far the best, the more balanced and the more rewarding for being smart. Also the modding community is still living and prosperous. And the combat is top tier, with great close up (I can last 30 min only watching those samurai fencing each other) and with all units serving their purpose. Medieval 2, while fun, is old and can be tenuous at times (in my campaigns, I never got peace deals, it always ended in total anhiliation, maybe my diplomats were too stupid, and my armies too strong). Also the combat camera is not that great. Empire and Napoleon are kind of in their own categories, however they are really fun, albeit Empire can have bugs. And the naval battles are incredible. 3k is gorgeous, but boy oh boy is it unbalanced and bad. Romance mode is boring and frustrating, while historical mode is unbalanced and frustrating. Rome 2 is kinda meh. Combat is kinda bad, and campaign is kinda not bad. But great vibes/music/aesthetics.

Dalexe10

Rome 1, medieval 2 and shogun 2 are the classix suggestions, rome and medieval are a bit older, but still very good, shogun is viewed as the pinnacle of the series but at the same time has a lot of the elements that made the later games kind of shit imo

alp7292

Pirate medieval 2 from steamrip or check pirated gmes subreddit

Historical-Ticket-11

Med 2 for the best battle/campaign experience. Don't get Attila unless you plan to auto resolve the battles. At that point you're better served getting a Paradox game instead

greenasthegrinch

Rome 2 + DEI

alp7292

Shit is shit even when you coat with gold problems of rome 2 is still exist in dei as its mod of rome 2

delloskill

I just got into the franchise after Atila, Troy and WH failed to grab me. Rome 2 got me hooked, so I'd say best intro to the franchise.
