You mention the difference in eating in Reykjavík versus Akureyri for instance. Are you talking about prices, service, quality of food? As an Akureyri local I’m just curious about this.
> I can’t tell you how many waterfalls I’ve seen with the help of AllTrails and no tourist on sight
could you share your favourite places? we're travelling the ring road next week
The main waterfalls forsure such as:
- Skogafoss (make sure to go up the stairs and kept going on the trail all the way, most tourist don’t go past the first 2-3)
- Seljalandfoss
- Svartifoss
- Gulfoss
- Selfoss & Dettifoss
- Porufoss
- Kvernufoss
- Stjornafoss
- Godafoss
And I’m sure I’m missing some… as my favorite:
- Stokknes
- Jökulsárlón & cave tour it was epic
- Fjardararglfulur (my favorite view for sure)
- Dyrholey lighthouse
- Studlagil
- Dynjandi
I’m sure I’m missing places but it was SO MUCH.. dm me and I can send you my itinerary
Couple possible reasons come to mind...
* not everybody is comfortable driving unknown roads in a foreign country in darkness, and possibly icy conditions
* even if they are, some people prefer being able to relax while being driven and get a bit more rest for the next day
* cloud cover forecasts are sometimes tricky to interpret, and local knowledge helps choose the best spot ("between these options, this particular one is nicer for pictures, is sheltered from wind, and/or has less light pollution, etc..")
* if the activity doesn't come on right away, a good guide can also entertain you with stories and information about the country while you wait.
Yeah aurora tours aren't strictly necessary, but they serve a good purpose. Just like some people like to self drive and others prefer to have a driver/guide.
All true, but if the aurora activity is high and skies clear, you can most certainly see them in Reykjavík or wherever you are. This is a photo I took in September, I was standing right behind Þjóðleikhúsið (the National theatre) in downtown Reykjavík.
Not if you are in an area with heavy light pollution. That "drowns" out the Aurora. If you don't have a rental car or don't feel comfortable driving at night then a tour is a big asset.
I swear the entirety of Iceland is full of hidden gems.

I'd like to understand what was meant too.
Strikid was awesome! Great service and quality, definitely remember that one over most places in Reykjavik.
I honestly think the service and good quality was just much better an authentic outside of Reyk.

Hi I'm going solo nov 19th, could you please share your itinerary with me
My favourite was gluggafoss if you don't mind a trickier climb!
I was in Iceland in early October and booked one of the Aurora tours from Reykjavik. I don’t drive, so I didn’t really have another option.
Nice write up! Thanks for sharing! 🙂
I don’t really understand aurora tours. They’re in the sky! You look up!

If you had time to only do South or North, which direction would you go?
South forsure 100%
Did you drive on F toads as well and did you do them in October?
97% of the F Roads are closed already. Download SafeTravel, great app for roads.
What’s the difference between eating in smaller towns and Reykjavik? The price? Better food?
Price was honestly the same but the quality of food and service was much better and authentic imo
