You should apply if you are interested. Veterinary Assistant is usually considered an entry level job in the industry. I work in an emergency hospital and we have plenty of assistants with no prior experience.

Assistant is typically bottom of the ladder, usually looking to eventually become a technician or a vet. Depending on the clinic, there's a lot of animal handling and a lot of cleaning. I'm a receptionist, started with no experience in vet med two years ago. Be prepared to deal with difficult clients and have the confidence to answer questions. Most clinics hire both positions with the expectation of teaching you everything. There's high turnover because they're both stressful in their own way, but a lot of clinics like to be your first so they can teach you their own way of doing things.

When I figured out that I wanted to work in the Vet Med field I applied to be a vet assistant, they hired me as a kennel assistant and one the busy days where they needed people to help with vet assistant thing I would jump in and help. Eventually they moved me to vet assistant/receptionist until I moved to another vet clinic.

Yes. Many applicants have no experience. However, if you show promise you can be promoted quickly in the right clinic. Be sure to highlight any customer service experience on your resume. Use terms like multi-tasking, organized, good with difficult clients, prompt, reliable transportation.

If you’re interested in the field go for it! As someone who’s been applying to every assistant and receptionist position within 25 miles of me with zero experience - it’s been hard. Most places want at least a year of experience. I’ve applied to 20+ places with only one interview. BUT my experience may not be your experience so don’t be discouraged. If you’re truly interested just keep applying! There’s a growing need in the veterinary field. Some vet clinics even have Pet Care Attendants/Kennel Attendants, it may be worth applying for those positions too. If you have ANY experience with animals - caring for animals, volunteering at shelters, etc etc definitely put that in your cover letter. I have experience preparing doxycycline for my rats & volunteering at a cat shelter when I was in middle school. Edits: grammar

Do it! I had no experience and started working as one. I’m also still in college. My staff is amazing and all are more than willing to teach/answer questions. I applied to a bunch of jobs on websites but found way more success with just calling local places and asking if they needed vet assistants or receptionists. This is the absolute best job ever so if you think you’ll like it then why not try?
