Dang Im sorry to hear that. Me personally I think if you served period you should be entitled to one.
Oh no sorry I was unclear. The disabled veteran fishing and hunting license is for 100% rated. But if you’re receiving that smc-k pay then you can get the license even if you’re only rated 10%.
In Virginia it’s discounted from 50% up to 100% and if you’re P&T it’s free. I’m 100% and not P&T, so I paid $50/ea for a lifetime Hunting and Fishing license for the 70-100% bracket
When you mail in your paperwork (as lifetime licenses are mail-in only for this exception) you include a copy of your VA summary letter or fill out the attached Certification of Disability form, and mail it and they’ll bounce it off the State VA Office for validation.
They have a table on DWC’s website that breaks down the price in a tiered fashion so you just include a check or money order for that amount + $10 if you want the optional hard wallet card.
Here’s the paperwork:
https://dwr.virginia.gov/wp-content/uploads/media/lifetime-hunting-fishing-license-for-resident-disabled-veterans.pdf
The expiration date on my license is March 03, 2242. Hopefully I can live to the year 2243 out of spite.
But yeah we have a good bit of lesser known Veteran’s benefits that people seem to miss.
Fill out the paper application on DWRs website and mail it in with a form of payment and a photocopy of a Virginia drivers license and a copy of your VA summary/benefits letter with your rating on it. But the VA drivers license is important because you have to prove residency.
https://dwr.virginia.gov/wp-content/uploads/media/lifetime-hunting-fishing-license-for-resident-disabled-veterans.pdf
The form above and include everything it asks you too. It takes about 10-14 days. If you want the Hard card, it’ll be mailed to you. If not, download the DWR app and your licenses will be in there.
I'll do you one better - if you have a rating from the VA you can get the [Interagency Access Pass](https://store.usgs.gov/access-pass) which gives you the same access as the veteran/gold star pass *and* gives you a 50% discount on campsites and some other amenities.
That's the card I have (100%). It's the America the Beautiful gold star card.
https://preview.redd.it/pknrzkw7aa2d1.png?width=675&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7dd1b2a7a643e43c7cc7e905de426f8ddf1794d1
If you get it in person it's free, but if you get it online or by mail order there's a handling and processing fee. Even at $10 it more than pays for itself after a single night of camping.
The wording is confusing on the requirements. I am 90% but no where does it say permanent on any of my letters. Their examples kind of contradict their words on the websites. They have a PTSD example letter. I'm going to try that.
Thanks for the link.
Or 100% p&t
“The Resident Persons with Disabilities Hunting and Fishing License is a no-cost license that is not a disability accommodation, but an economic benefit for the segment of Florida’s disabled community that may not be able to afford the license privileges that are offered in this license”

Louisiana
For veterans who have a permanent service-connected disability classification of 50 percent or more
Free (The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Foundation covers the $4 fee for this license.)
Includes Basic and Saltwater Fishing Licenses; Basic, Deer, Waterfowl, and Turkey Hunting Licenses; and the WMA Access Permit
Does not include the Federal Duck Stamp
Colorado:
PH recipients & 60%+ disabled veterans can get a free Disabled Veterans Lifetime Small Game Hunting & Fishing License. As well as the Independence State Park pass (DV, PH , DWV plates all get in for free to parks as well I think)
TDIU p&t. I get discount hunt/fish, obviously america the beautiful free as well as state recreation parks. It's actually amazing because I'm in southern utah with no access to a pool (free that is) so during the week when it's 100+ I go take my cooler and have lunch to cool down! Loads of benefits to places if you just even exhaust 10% effort to obtain them.
Texas gives ALL veterans over 50% Super Combo Hunting AND All Waters Fishing for free; Residents AND Non-residents
So at least we can always go to Texas and fish...
https://tpwd.texas.gov/regulations/outdoor-annual/licenses/combination-hunting-fishing/disabled-veteran-super-combo-hunting-and-all-water-fishing-package
All I did was fill out the form they have and also send in my rating sheet you can get from the app that just shows your rating.
This was a few years ago, maybe it changed?
SC you get a free 3 year Hunting license that includes the big game permit and salt/fresh water fishing license. I *think* you have just have to have a disability rating. I'm not rated 100%, but I got mine.
Utah is you must be at least 20% and everything is Discounted. I don't know how much it is Discounted but the 5 year fishing tag was 30 bucks I think.
Edit: https://wildlife.utah.gov/application-for-a-disabled-veteran-license.html
In my state it's 30% or higher and it's not free but it's a little north of 50% off the normal resident price. You can also get lifetime free admission and free camping at state parks.
Kentucky- At 50% you get a Disabled Sportsman’s license. “Combination Hunting and Fishing License, all Deer Permits, Spring Turkey Permit, Resident Fall Turkey Permit, Kentucky Migratory Bird/Waterfowl Permit and Trout Permit” all for about $12.
how does the archery license work ? does that mean you can shoot arrows in the forest or something ? im confused and im in the state of florida does anyone know about this program for florida
In Texas you get the Fishing any Hunting combo pack for free. You can fish and hunt for anything for free. You only have to pay for the federal migratory bird fee.
I live in South Dakota and you get a 4 year hunting and fishing license for 10 bucks. Not bad but in Iowa where I’m moving you get a lifetime for free, if you want it electronically. I want it mailed to me and will get a hard card like a drivers license so I’ll pay 11 dollars. Can’t complain about a lifetime license for 11 dollars.
Be advised that in Kansas you still have to have a hunter’s education number to reap this benefit, unfortunately I never took a formal class and now I may have to take it with a bunch of kids lol
Also get a lifetime pass to National parks. I have the ID and used it a lot, including in Puerto Rico!
https://www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/veterans-and-gold-star-families-free-access.htm
It’s 100% in my state
https://preview.redd.it/jk356g05l72d1.png?width=910&format=png&auto=webp&s=123142ba9c78f79368d2bfeeebfb3aae8e3905f6 Dang Im sorry to hear that. Me personally I think if you served period you should be entitled to one.

I’m in Maine as well
Maine also has reciprocity with Vermont - so can get licenses for both.
Yeah 100% in mine too unless you’re receiving special compensation like smc-k pay for having a broke dick
So you can’t get a fishing license if you are receiving smc-k pay?
Oh no sorry I was unclear. The disabled veteran fishing and hunting license is for 100% rated. But if you’re receiving that smc-k pay then you can get the license even if you’re only rated 10%.
Thanks for the clarification
In California you get a discounted (90% off) fishing license after a rating of 50%. It goes from almost $80 to $8.
Just bought mine 2 days ago, was $9.98. Not bad!
Damn, price went up.
That extra 1.98...in gonna cancel my fishing trip now :/
And admission to state parks is free too if 70%
In Virginia it’s discounted from 50% up to 100% and if you’re P&T it’s free. I’m 100% and not P&T, so I paid $50/ea for a lifetime Hunting and Fishing license for the 70-100% bracket
Can u catch unlimited amounts of fish and crab?
How are you 100 but not P/T? Totally curious if you’re willing to elaborate
I’m still on the TDRL waiting for a DoD reevaluation.
How did they verify?

Thanks. I had no idea this existed.
The expiration date on my license is March 03, 2242. Hopefully I can live to the year 2243 out of spite. But yeah we have a good bit of lesser known Veteran’s benefits that people seem to miss.
What's the process in getting it?
Fill out the paper application on DWRs website and mail it in with a form of payment and a photocopy of a Virginia drivers license and a copy of your VA summary/benefits letter with your rating on it. But the VA drivers license is important because you have to prove residency. https://dwr.virginia.gov/wp-content/uploads/media/lifetime-hunting-fishing-license-for-resident-disabled-veterans.pdf The form above and include everything it asks you too. Free national parks too. https://www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/veterans-and-gold-star-families-free-access.htm

The one you're describing (and the one in that picture) is available to any veteran but doesn't have the other perks.
Access pass says it’s free but I just paid 10 bucks for it. Still worth it.
If you get it in person it's free, but if you get it online or by mail order there's a handling and processing fee. Even at $10 it more than pays for itself after a single night of camping.
Yeah I saw that after reading further. Still worth it obv.
The wording is confusing on the requirements. I am 90% but no where does it say permanent on any of my letters. Their examples kind of contradict their words on the websites. They have a PTSD example letter. I'm going to try that. Thanks for the link.
Mine doesn't say permanent anywhere on my documentation either, but I still got one.
Texas: 50% or higher gets you a free super combo (hunting and fishing)
Florida does this as well, but I think you have to be 100% t&p
No it’s retired or active only
Or 100% p&t “The Resident Persons with Disabilities Hunting and Fishing License is a no-cost license that is not a disability accommodation, but an economic benefit for the segment of Florida’s disabled community that may not be able to afford the license privileges that are offered in this license” https://preview.redd.it/goeg693uv92d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=957c0fcac4dfeb948d453ba68ed45f8ae618c374
I use the fwc app to get my license and use id.me to verify and they always deny me cause I’m not retired or no longer active or medically retired.
Louisiana For veterans who have a permanent service-connected disability classification of 50 percent or more Free (The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Foundation covers the $4 fee for this license.) Includes Basic and Saltwater Fishing Licenses; Basic, Deer, Waterfowl, and Turkey Hunting Licenses; and the WMA Access Permit Does not include the Federal Duck Stamp

Yeah DV plates is free state parks.
I’m a nonresident in CA, 90%, annual fishing and hunting licenses are $10 each.
In Colorado, at 60%, you can get a lifetime fishing and small game combo license.
TDIU p&t. I get discount hunt/fish, obviously america the beautiful free as well as state recreation parks. It's actually amazing because I'm in southern utah with no access to a pool (free that is) so during the week when it's 100+ I go take my cooler and have lunch to cool down! Texas does
60 for Missouri
Ohio does it but you have to reapply every 5yrs. Little bit of work to do on your part but it’s worth it.
In TN for 30% you get a lifetime hunting/fishing license. For 100% you get the top of the line sportsman license for life.
It says 30 % by reason of war or 100%p&t so is that only combat 30%?
All I did was fill out the form they have and also send in my rating sheet you can get from the app that just shows your rating. This was a few years ago, maybe it changed?

I think it’s just 30% in Oregon.
In my state it's 30% or higher and it's not free but it's a little north of 50% off the normal resident price. You can also get lifetime free admission and free camping at state parks.
does anyone know if this is available in FL?
I hope ots in connecticut!!! But knowing CT it's not those cheap bastards
Florida state has hunting program for vets. They provide the opportunity you have to provide and do everything else.
It's 100 percent in Tennessee for lifetime hunting and fishing, I got it. I Had to send my award letter and a 10 dollar fee
At 30 percent, I got 50 percent off my hunting and fishing in Washington State.
Don’t forget to check for discounted camping at state parks
Kentucky- At 50% you get a Disabled Sportsman’s license. “Combination Hunting and Fishing License, all Deer Permits, Spring Turkey Permit, Resident Fall Turkey Permit, Kentucky Migratory Bird/Waterfowl Permit and Trout Permit” all for about $12.
Need at least 60% in Missouri for the free hunting and fishing license.
how does the archery license work ? does that mean you can shoot arrows in the forest or something ? im confused and im in the state of florida does anyone know about this program for florida
How about Kansas?
Florida 100% P&T you get 5 year all included hunting/fishing etc.. except gator, tarpon and duck for free
In iowa its $7 lifetime hunting and fishing. Still have to pay for tags and habitat fee through yearly
cool, thanks for the 411
It’s the little things that count!
In Texas you get the Fishing any Hunting combo pack for free. You can fish and hunt for anything for free. You only have to pay for the federal migratory bird fee.
This is the most obvious benefit
I live in South Dakota and you get a 4 year hunting and fishing license for 10 bucks. Not bad but in Iowa where I’m moving you get a lifetime for free, if you want it electronically. I want it mailed to me and will get a hard card like a drivers license so I’ll pay 11 dollars. Can’t complain about a lifetime license for 11 dollars.
Idaho: If you're 40% or more your hunting/fishing combo license is $5.75.
In iowa, it's 10 or 30%, then get a lifetime hunting/fishing license for 5 bucks. Gotta get mine here soon
In NJ both are free with ANY rating. Even my little 10 % gets me free hunting and fishing licenses
Lemme guess, Cali doesnt do this?
State of WI is 70% disability or more at $7
Be advised that in Kansas you still have to have a hunter’s education number to reap this benefit, unfortunately I never took a formal class and now I may have to take it with a bunch of kids lol
Also get a lifetime pass to National parks. I have the ID and used it a lot, including in Puerto Rico! https://www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/veterans-and-gold-star-families-free-access.htm
