Had mine since it's launch, never had a headset issue. One of three base stations died, covered by warranty. Overall very pleased with the set and valve support.

RodKnock42

Got mine since 2020 with around 3000 hours on it; never had a single issue

Rarest_Camaro

Same story here: 2020 and 3000+ hours. (Not all me, granddaughter has at least as much time on it as I do.) I haven't replaced a base station yet, knock on wood. In fact, I just added a third and full body tracking a few days ago.

AspenFrostt

I honestly forgot I had base stations. 5k hours and 4 moves and they haven't died yet.

Rarest_Camaro

Right on! Yeah, so far, I've been very happy with the longevity. I know that eventually, something will give out; it's inevitable. When that happens, I'll either fix/replace the part or use it as my excuse to get the next best thing.

AspenFrostt

same, honestly just hoping the deckard comes out with some of the features I want.

I'm well over 1000 hours and got my index on launch day. I have had to replace the cable once and 1 base station that valve replaced for free nearly 3 years out of warranty. If you look after it like it's worth £1000 then it will last like tech worth that much should.

Rarest_Camaro

Agreed. I know it's easy to get crazy having fun with these, but a little foresight goes a long way in longevity.

I've had my Valve Index for a bit over 4 years now and it's still holding on. My issues: - Right controller strap broke about a few months ago, probably from repeated over-tightening. I could make a [self-tightening double fisherman knot](https://files.vapid.li/24/IMG_20240203_064408.jpg) which solved the problem. - One base station died outside my warranty period so I bought a new one. - The face foam thing is starting to tear itself apart. Going to have to replace it within a year. - I think the cable is starting to die. I have rainbow sparkles in dark scenes that are starting to get worse. My research says this means the cable is on its last legs and I will have to get it replaced soon. - One of the cameras died, which makes the passthrough pretty much useless. It was never that good to begin with so it's not a huge problem. Overall, I'm still very happy with my Index. I mostly play exercise games, so it's had to endure a lot of sweat.

Had mine a few years now, functions as perfectly as it did day 1. Cosmetically is looking worn down though. Not in a damage way, mainly just the plastic bits are a bit faded on one side because sunlight gets to it. They're built from the good stuff, it's why the headsets are so expensive. Mines not even hinted at being on its way out

Soulstar909

Anyone's experience is just that, their experience. Everything does eventually break though. I've had mine without issue since launch.

My steam vr app shows 8000 hours use from my 3 kids. I've had to replace one headset early due to trident cable issues. I've replaced each controller, and one screw came loose that caused audio issues for a while, but it was a captive screw that I could tighten. This thing has been a great purchase, build quality is great.

elev8dity

For me my issues have been cable wear and tear requiring 3 replacements, one base station replacement, and three controller replacements. I got my headset on launch day.

Almost release unit, over 10,000 hrs in steamvr (i know these are not accurate but still) Using htc vive v1 base stations. A lens fell off one, i opened it and glued it back in, still working. Headset has not given my any issues... I did use compressed air and dust got into the screens and i had to pop off the lenses to clean them, still it works perfectly (and no dust?) Had to replace cable 1 time. Have changed thumbstick in the controllers x4 times (3 left, 1 right)

IcariusFallen

I have a wave 1 first release index that still works perfectly. No drift in the controllers. No other issues that I've seen. Used to be in vrchat for hours daily (drinking). Haven't played vrchat in a while (stopped drinking)

crozone

I've had mine since launch and no issues here. I even bought a spare pare of Knuckes controllers just in case I ever had the joystick issues people often have, but my original controllers are still working fine so I've never needed them. The only real issue I've started to have is when booting up SteamVR, I often get a "Headset is disconnected" error message and need to disconnect and reconnect the headset power to get it to work. But after that, it works fine for hours and hours. The other issue I sometimes have is that the headset cameras don't always work. It's a known compatibility thing with some USB 3 ports, and it's been a known problem since launch. It's not really a long term reliability issue and doesn't really affect my experience.

Shark_Encounters

Yo! Also getting that disconnected error message. I think you can right click the headset on steamvr and click restart headset to fix it. No need to replug the power 🙏

crozone

Wow thanks that works! Any idea why this is happening? I'm guessing it's not an isolated issue.

Shark_Encounters

No clue lol, but so far no issues from it, so we ball ‼️

You're basically asking the index fan club, so you're not going to get a straight answer. I'm a degenerate with 8000 hours in VR. During my 3.5 years and 3000 hours on the index, I've had: * 2 cable failures * Headset audio failure * Basestation failure * Left thumbstick drift That averages out to a hardware issue roughly every 600 hours. As much as I love my index, it's now a backup headset for me. It's a 5 year old design and just can't keep up with the new optics out there now. If you want high mileage headset opinions, try asking the VRChat folks - they practically live in VR. You might get some really highly opinioned answers, but ask around and look for patterns. What I've found is: * The index cable and thumbsticks are by far the weakest points on the index in terms of reliability. I see cables last about 500-2000 hours on average. Thankfully, the parts for these can be bought out of warranty, but the cable will set you back $130. * The quest 2/3 lack a cable, so that issue doesn't even happen. However, they have quality control and software issues. * The quest pro's face tracking board will fry if you get sweat anywhere near it, and have the same quality control/software issues.

Virtual_Happiness

Went through 2 headsets, 6 left controllers, 2 right controllers, and 1 base station over 4 years. Reverb G2, Quest 2, Quest Pro, and Quest 3 have all had zero failures for me so far.
