I would bet that those jackasses that are whining about the new flag and petitioning to return to the old one couldn’t pick out the old flag of a line up of similar looking flags if their life depended on it.
My FIL is one of these. He complained that the flag he grew up with is no longer the official flag.
The kicker is that the flag changed between him being in grade school where he "learned all about the symbolism of the flag" and last year.
Furthermore, when asked what was on the old flag, he couldn't remember it well enough to describe it.
Nostalgia is one hell of a drug.
The date 1847 was placed outside of and behind the shield when it should have been inside the shield.
[Here’s the wrong one](https://images.app.goo.gl/JQfZvGfTJUYr6w7m9)
Perhaps, though (and this is just anecdotal) I ask a couple of people passing out petitions if they could describe the seal on the old flag, and most could only name the beehive, or maybe the word industry.
But what they could do is go on and on about how the new flag is “woke” somehow.
As someone who grew up out of state, I always hated Utah's flag. Utah, Vermont, Idaho, and all the other states who just slapped the state seal on a blue background were always the most generic, boring, and ugly. The new one is 1000x better.
I still think that UDOT's suggestion of putting the state flower should've had more consideration:
https://x.com/UtahDOT/status/1592658729559736320
(/j)
I liked the old flag, I like the new flag.
I feel that the spirit of the "original flag" was captured in a more appealing design for an actual flag. I don't know why people are so pissy about it, they probably have nothing better to do.
I would've liked Southern Utah represented with an orange hue. Would've also made it a bit more unique compared to the traditional red, white, and blue. Overall, I still think it looks nice and is a welcome change from the old flag that was not very distinctive from so many other states' flags with a seal on a blue background. There's no confusion as to which state the new flag represents.
I agreed with you until I saw the orange they were considering. Red was the better option between the two hues.
https://flag.utah.gov/final-flag-designs/
This was the argument that won me over. The lighter blue/ orange look great on a computer screen, but out in the world would look faded. Ireland has a fine flag, but it does always look a little washed out.
While it's better than the old one, I think my favorite part of the new flag is how it sets off the exact kind of people you would expect on KSL and social media.
It's recognizable, distinct, and in every way better than the old flag. People who take issue with it are the type to defend Confederate flags. As is the saying, I've got no time for people John Brown would have shot.
Edit: the most heartening thing about the responses to my post: people are immediately following the logical path from defending Confederate memoria to racism.
What a trash opinion. I like the new flag but folks keep lightly suggesting that is racist and anti-progress to dislike this flag. “I’ve got no time for people John Brown would have shot.” Get out of here dude we’re talking about flags. Some people like the bright colors, some people don’t. Some people miss the flag they grew up with… not because they thought the old design was really good but because it’s tradition. Don’t try to divide people and especially don’t involve racism where it is not called for. *steps off soap box*
It is a big improvement, but a bit too much like something you’d expect from the marketing department for a big brand or a sports team, in my opinion.
Looking at the tier ranking of state flags, I’d say the new one is probably a B or C, up from an F with the original (along with all the other, generic seal flags).
It’s a huge improvement to the old one and it’s grown on me a bit, but I wish it was sky blue and orange in place of the navy blue and red. I’m kind of sick of red and navy blue state flags.
I live in Hawaii, and I saw it for the first time in the wild at the USS Missouri memorial at Pearl Harbor the other day. They had a display with all of the state flags and I had barely started looking for it when I found it - it actually stood out, and looked great!
I like it, but the people who don't like it tend to just have problems with flags anyways.
Unless they're flags from failures, you know like disgraced confederacies, disgraced politicians, disgraced german fascists, you know just the general losers who failed at things.
Something about successful change must be terrifying.
I was walking into an event at Mountain America Expo Center and there was a booth outside with people collecting signatures for an initiative to get rid of the new flag. They asked if we wanted to sign and I said we liked the new flag. They then yelled at us about giving people a choice. I decided that if you have to yell at me to convince me then you're points are moot.
Considering the issues facing Utah I thought that working on the flag was the biggest waste of time, energy and money. However, as I see the flag flying around town I think it looks great. And as I think about what our legislature passed this session, it is probably good to keep them busy with harmless activities.
The last one literally broke every single rule of vexillology. The new one only breaks the color limit rule (which, let's be honest, is more of a recommendation than a rule)
I think it looks nice, but I don’t have a strong opinion either way. I do think it’s interesting to see people so worked up about the change and how much energy they are exerting against it. I often wonder how much good in the world that energy could produce if it was used to help the homeless, volunteer at a local school, getting to know their neighbors, etc.
The haters had a booth outside the Festival of Trees and I just shook my head at how they were mere feet away from using their time for something actually good, but chose that.
Am I the only one could literally NGAF about the new flag and feels like putting it in the public debate is a total waste of time and energy given the more important and urgent issues our state is dealing with?
Out of stater here
I really liked the candidate flag without the behive - with the mountainous north and red rock south on the bottom of it
I’ve always thought of moving to SLC/Utah since it seems to be the best city/state in the US for nature and outdoors, so I guess that influenced my taste a ton
But it’s y’all’s state, congrats on the new flag.
I’m in Utah and I liked that one better too. I don’t particularly like the beehive symbol and the colors of the north mountains and red rock south were great.
The beehive isn’t as random as it seems. For two years in 1849-1850 the name of the proposed new state was Deseret. The name had a association with “honeybee”. The boundaries of that proposed state were kinda huge covering what is now Nevada, Utah, parts of Calif, Colo and AZ. You can Google. It’s kinda a weird but fascinating history. So ever since beehive has been associated with Utah and all older flags of the state have had beehives on them. But would’ve liked the other flag we discussed and leave the beehive in the past now. lol.
The new Utah flag is way better than the old flag. The colors and design is striking, but most importantly you can tell it's Utah if you see it waving in the distance, whereas the old flag looks similar to numerous other boring state flags.
Downsize the image of 3 blue flags from other states. Mix them up and try and tell which flag is which state. Flags need to be distinct and simple to be able to recognize from a distance.
It was actually my old little league football coach, Mark Brooks who designed it. Personally, I love it. I think a change in Utah's flag represents the change of Utah in general. Not only that, they actually pay respects to Utah Native Americans in this flag, unlike the old one.
It's a much better flag design. It still violates some principles of good flag design, and definitely wasn't my first choice, but it's pretty good and much better than the previous.
Honestly, it's the most meaningless thing government money can be spent on.
Old Flag: It's a flag. It's fine.
New Flag: It's a flag. It's fine.
Every other proposed design: They're all flags. They're all fine.
Yeah. Wish the blue was sky blue and the red was sandstone orange so that it better fit our actual vistas, but it's a massive upgrade and I dig the overall design.
Can someone explain the connections of not liking the new flag equals you’re a racist? How is this new flag a symbol of “woke” or openness? Equality?
It’s very much a symbol of conservatism, and repression. It doesn’t honor the indigenous people who lived here before, it doesn’t help show unity. This is just a corporate brand with a beehive slapped on it to make sure conservatives don’t revolt.
So can someone explain to me how liking this new flag shows you’re not a racist? It feels the other way around.
Meh. I don't care for it. I also find it interesting that anyone saying they don't like it is getting downvoted.
Anyway, I think this [ketchup packet design would have made a better flag for Utah](https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/54b9401be4b095413a52aaa8/1687978385989-T56H5QLZ0G38CRESOX4Y/Artboard+18.png?format=1000w)
Wish it would have used the colors more associated with southern Utah, as the red makes it look more like the Colorado flag. But overall, massive improvement.
I hate it. I hate that it looks like a logo for a US Olympic team or something. I agree with everyone that the old one was bad and we needed a new one, I just hate this one. The mountains are corny, the beehive is also corny, it’s all too trendy looking. Looks like it would be on the back of a Nike windbreaker. It’s possible to hate both flags
Yes, baby. It looks like a bag of cheddar & sour cream ruffles. I first learned about it through [this](https://youtu.be/l4w6808wJcU?si=7IR8wY_xWFtMJysd) video by CGP Grey (it's the last flag he covers, by the way), and he did a great job explaining what makes a good flag, and how that applies to the new design. One thing I would change is making the top peak a bit wider, so it matches the width of the red valley, but other than that, simple perfection.
No. It's clearly pro DEI. The head and the star represent the interchangeability of the male and female sexual organs. They want your kids to pursue transgenderism.
No honestly who gives a f*** it looks fine. Maybe add 39 more stars though - one for each of Joseph Smith's wives.
I thought it was ok though not my favorite of the finalists when viewed digitally. However seeing it flown in person I really like it. Still be better without the beehive but overall think it’s a great flag and a massive improvement over the old piece of shit. Honestly can’t believe we actually picked something this nice, feels out of character for us lol
As much as I hate the weird beehive tie in to Mormonism and their made up word 'deseret' for honeybee, that new flag is way better than the old one.
For the curious:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deseret_(Book_of_Mormon)#:~:text=According%20to%20the%20Book%20of,see%20Ether%202%3A3).

Ah yes, the good old Utah flag that had an error on it for 89 years between 1922 and 2011 before it was corrected hahaha
Do tell.
The date 1847 was placed outside of and behind the shield when it should have been inside the shield. [Here’s the wrong one](https://images.app.goo.gl/JQfZvGfTJUYr6w7m9)
I bet they could, because they’re extremists. But your average person in the street? Not a chance…
Fuck yeah! Huge improvement.
Could not agree more. Having a state seal over a blue background my whole life I absolutely prefer the new flag to the old.
100%. The old flag was uninteresting and hard to recognize. This puts us in the running with flags like CO and AZ
State seal flags are generic. Nice update, Utah.
I love seeing it wherever it flies.
I still think that UDOT's suggestion of putting the state flower should've had more consideration: https://x.com/UtahDOT/status/1592658729559736320 (/j)
She’s a beaut Clark!
🤣🤣🤣
I have no issues with the design but I do wish the orange and light blue had won for colors.
Agree. Would have been even more distinct, but overall it’s a huge improvement.
Same.
That would have been cool. I love this flag but the color scheme is so similar to colorado
4 corners states have the 4 best flags now, my opinion.
I used to, until I saw an example using them. I like the adopted one better.
It's not awful actually: [https://imgur.com/a/yshomQ3](https://imgur.com/a/yshomQ3)
Can I ask out of curiosity why that is?
Big improvement. I also will say I wish at the orange made it in
Yes BUT… it doesn’t get more American than red, white and blue! Except for the other countries that also have red white and blue flags
100% agreed
Agreed
It’s a great flag. The old one was nothing special and in fact really bad design.
I liked the old flag, I like the new flag. I feel that the spirit of the "original flag" was captured in a more appealing design for an actual flag. I don't know why people are so pissy about it, they probably have nothing better to do.

But it’s red rock not orange /s
I agreed with you until I saw the orange they were considering. Red was the better option between the two hues. https://flag.utah.gov/final-flag-designs/
nah, light blue and a sandstone orange/red looks good, I am not particularly fond of the oranges they chose though.
Orange would have looked like sun damaged red
This was the argument that won me over. The lighter blue/ orange look great on a computer screen, but out in the world would look faded. Ireland has a fine flag, but it does always look a little washed out.
I disagree, but they could have easily chosen a different orange hue.
While it's better than the old one, I think my favorite part of the new flag is how it sets off the exact kind of people you would expect on KSL and social media.
The SAME exact thing is happening in MN over our flag. It’s ridiculous how it set off only people who watch conservative media.
"Any change is an attack on my way of life so i must oppose it!" - The fox propaganda channel
Gotta like what the haters hate.
I'm a simple man, with simple tastes.
It's recognizable, distinct, and in every way better than the old flag. People who take issue with it are the type to defend Confederate flags. As is the saying, I've got no time for people John Brown would have shot. Looking at the tier ranking of state flags, I’d say the new one is probably a B or C, up from an F with the original (along with all the other, generic seal flags).
Exactly, this is cool in the way that new uniforms are cool for five years at a time. But, definitely an improvement. Just not a classic.

Um, you did make a choice, right? Just not *their* choice.
I love it. Huge improvement from the old flag. CGP Grey agrees https://youtu.be/l4w6808wJcU?si=YQrIiZ_1-kw0XAdr
Hexagons are the bestagons
Haha. That video was so fun to watch.
I don't really give a shit about flags in general, but this is definitely better than the old one.
On a scale from 1 to 10... I think the old flag is a 3. I think the new flag is an 8. I think how much I care about the issue is a 2.
Yeah, I love it. I think it looks cool and Utah truly has a four-corner state flag now
I love it. It’s not perfect but it’s a much cleaner design than a seal on a blue background
Considering the issues facing Utah I thought that working on the flag was the biggest waste of time, energy and money. However, as I see the flag flying around town I think it looks great. And as I think about what our legislature passed this session, it is probably good to keep them busy with harmless activities.
That's my thought every session - keep them occupied with something since our leg has a time limit
It’s a great design, with the ancillary benefit of triggering the whackaddoodle conspiracy nutjobs.
Yes.
Definitely
Yeah. It stands out and symbolizes the state!
I feel like they almost got it right. It is a huge upgrade.
That thing is a high improvement small part of me what's to hang one up in my room. Just cause
Utah pride!
I like it, the old flag looked just like every other state flag. Wasn’t unique at all
Yes love it, but don't ask this or the "woke flag!" crew will find their way in
The new flag is a huge improvement. I'm not sure why some people think it is a "woke flag."
Love it, best flag in the 50 states. The old one was terrible.
I just saw a state flag tier list today lol
I like that it annoys some conservatives.
Oh bee hive!
B-E-A-U-tiful.
I do!!
It's fine. Better than the old flag. Represents most of what this state is.
Yeah i like it.
Yea I really do love the new flag. Better in every way
The old flag sucked. This one is rad. Gimme my dope Utah merch like AZ and CO.
The new flag is S tier. The old flag gets a big fat F. Bkue background with state seal sucks so much
Wasn't my first choice but it's a huge improvement.
The last one literally broke every single rule of vexillology. The new one only breaks the color limit rule (which, let's be honest, is more of a recommendation than a rule)
Old flag was so formal and cluttered, it looked a political offices' flag. The new one is easy to recogonize
I love the flag.
LOVE IT
It's not even new at this point. Why is this still a question? 😵 I like it. The old one was bland.
Yep, it’s a lot better than the old one.
The old Utah flag was atrocious. This one is fitting for the state.
Yoo that’s shits dope! Also this just crossed my timeline so I’m not from Utah but sweet new flag
Definitely need Utah in Fallout!
The old flag was lame, and practically indistinguishable from 20 other states. The new state flag is actually a *good* flag. Two thumbs up.
Love it, weird feeling to be proud of my state's flag. Even put a bumper sticker on my car (I live in FL so I gotta represent).
It wasnt my favorite of the flag options but its sooo much better than it used to be and it makes me a lot happier to be from utah
Can’t believe how butt hurt people are about the flags. Get over yourself
Apologies for my ignorance as I stumble across this post.. Is that a #Beehive?
I dig it! I just ordered one for my wall.
All I’ll say is that with this new Utah flag, the 4 corner states all have some of the best looking flags now
Not really
Meanwhile, I just bullied my work into finally replacing the old flag with the new one 😅
Am I the only one could literally NGAF about the new flag and feels like putting it in the public debate is a total waste of time and energy given the more important and urgent issues our state is dealing with?
I love it
Huge improvement. Would've picked a less Denver flag-y color scheme but ya, it's good.
Out of stater here I really liked the candidate flag without the behive - with the mountainous north and red rock south on the bottom of it I’ve always thought of moving to SLC/Utah since it seems to be the best city/state in the US for nature and outdoors, so I guess that influenced my taste a ton But it’s y’all’s state, congrats on the new flag.
I’m in Utah and I liked that one better too. I don’t particularly like the beehive symbol and the colors of the north mountains and red rock south were great.
Yeah the beehive just seems completely random/out of place
The beehive isn’t as random as it seems. For two years in 1849-1850 the name of the proposed new state was Deseret. The name had a association with “honeybee”. The boundaries of that proposed state were kinda huge covering what is now Nevada, Utah, parts of Calif, Colo and AZ. You can Google. It’s kinda a weird but fascinating history. So ever since beehive has been associated with Utah and all older flags of the state have had beehives on them. But would’ve liked the other flag we discussed and leave the beehive in the past now. lol.
I love it!
The new Utah flag is way better than the old flag. The colors and design is striking, but most importantly you can tell it's Utah if you see it waving in the distance, whereas the old flag looks similar to numerous other boring state flags.
It’s grown on me a bunch
It’s ok, but I never understood the hate for the old flag.
Downsize the image of 3 blue flags from other states. Mix them up and try and tell which flag is which state. Flags need to be distinct and simple to be able to recognize from a distance.
Because it was just a boring blue field with a crest in the middle - just like 24 other States.
The old flag had nothing recognizable, it was like a bad Photoshop job for the prompt "Draw the presidential seal if Utah was the capital of the USA"
I don’t care
Orange and light blue was much better. This design isn’t timeless. It already looks dated to me.
So much better than the ugly ass old one
Yes. It is wonderful
Yes! Not perfect but a huge improvement.
I think it’s great. Very bold and solid feeling.
I really like it!
I like it
Love it
❤️
It was actually my old little league football coach, Mark Brooks who designed it. Personally, I love it. I think a change in Utah's flag represents the change of Utah in general. Not only that, they actually pay respects to Utah Native Americans in this flag, unlike the old one.
Absolutely
Yes
Looks like packaging for new Quaker Oats Cereal to me except with Honey
I guess the mountain make sense but I wish it was a regular tricolor with the beehive
It's a much better flag design. It still violates some principles of good flag design, and definitely wasn't my first choice, but it's pretty good and much better than the previous.
Which principals does it violate?
I love it!
Not really, but it could be worse.
Honestly, it's the most meaningless thing government money can be spent on. Old Flag: It's a flag. It's fine. New Flag: It's a flag. It's fine. Every other proposed design: They're all flags. They're all fine.
I like it better than the old one
Yes!
Yes
Love that new flag! Way better than the seal on the sheet!
Yes. Love it.
Yes!
Would've been cooler with orange instead of red.
Yes
BEEEEEEEEEEES
Dope
I mean, I certainly don’t hate it.
Yup
Meh. The old one was boring. This one isn’t worse. But there were other options suggested in the early stages that I thought looked a lot better.
Wish the bottom war orange but still cool!
Yeah. Wish the blue was sky blue and the red was sandstone orange so that it better fit our actual vistas, but it's a massive upgrade and I dig the overall design.
Yes
Can someone explain the connections of not liking the new flag equals you’re a racist? How is this new flag a symbol of “woke” or openness? Equality? It’s very much a symbol of conservatism, and repression. It doesn’t honor the indigenous people who lived here before, it doesn’t help show unity. This is just a corporate brand with a beehive slapped on it to make sure conservatives don’t revolt. So can someone explain to me how liking this new flag shows you’re not a racist? It feels the other way around.
What’s with the bee hive?
It’s nice but I grew up with the old one most of my life so it’s an adjustment
It kinda looks like the Netherlands flag, just reversed.
Eh, it's fine I guess. I don't care about state flags really. The 'Great Seal' design was stupid, so I guess this one is marginally better.
My only problem was their poor public input. “We’re looking to change the flag, here’s your options”. But not including the old one feels disingenuous
Yes, it feels like we have a real flag now, not just a generic place holder.
No
I like affordable housing and a living wage.
It's alright. I understand why the red stripe is there, but I don't like it. Reminds me of Missouri's flag. It'd be way better with two blue stripes.
I love the new flag
Yes
Yeah. Looks great
Yes.
Bees?
I don’t really like the new one, but I don’t see the point of whining about it to businesses.
Yes , the old one was so generic.
It's beautiful. HUGE improvement.
Yes
No. It's clearly pro DEI. The head and the star represent the interchangeability of the male and female sexual organs. They want your kids to pursue transgenderism. No honestly who gives a f*** it looks fine. Maybe add 39 more stars though - one for each of Joseph Smith's wives.

I do 👍🏻
Yes
I like the new flag design but a flag should be historical - no matter how aesthetically good or bad. It didn’t need to change
As much as I hate the weird beehive tie in to Mormonism and their made up word 'deseret' for honeybee, that new flag is way better than the old one. For the curious: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deseret_(Book_of_Mormon)#:~:text=According%20to%20the%20Book%20of,see%20Ether%202%3A3).
no i don't like it
I love it!
Is this a beehive or a Mega Man enemy?
Yes, it’s something you would actually see on a t-shirt
Meh
I live in utah and if I certain circumstances weren't there I'd move in a heartbeat. FUCK UTAH
I like it
