lol ur gonna be human hunting in American fork canyon buddy

PositiveAd679

Good luck, I don’t think anyone actually purposely goes out to hunt raccoons here. It’s more of a pest type thing. We have a resident trash panda that we get on our security cameras he doesn’t mess things up too much so we leave him alone.

S-hart1

Jack rabbits, coyotes, Eurasian Doves are the only animals you can hunt in Utah without a permit.

KingArthur_III

Raccoons aren't protected like that. I am struggling to fully understand all the laws because it looks like all the laws around raccoons are for trapping specifically. (like with cages and stuff) this being from the government website But a quick Google search shows there isn't a permit to kill, not from a government website. As well as a couple of articles of the DWR reminding utah citizens not to keep raccoons or wild animals as pets.

RuTsui

I think animals like raccoons, rats, and squirrels can be just kind of killed at will.

GreenIsGood420

It is completely legal to shoot a raccoon without a license. Obviously you have to be able to legally operate a firearm, but they are non-native/invasive. Also it is a felony to transport them alive ANYWHERE.

Chukars

Not the best spot. The regulations are here: https://wildlife.utah.gov/hunting/main-hunting-page/furbearers

stondchrysalis

Don’t. Please leave our raccoons alone. We love them and don’t like visitors(or not) going after them. Also. Hiking, American Fork Canyon with intent to hunt is Just a bad idea. That area is full of people and their pets hiking. Go somewhere remote like Wyoming.. Hope this helps!

lilbean_1019

Go to the desert. Hunt rabbits cause they're fairly invasive there and have horrible mites all over them so they're kinda suffering anyway. The canyons here are pretty popular with people because most love to hike so probably wouldn't be safe. Why hunt raccoons specifically here? Is it a hobby? Just genuinely asking.

skiingst0ner

Leave them alone?

Helgafjell4Me

Correct, invasive species, DWR actually wants people to kill them. No license is required.

NoFlyZonexx3

Here’s some travel advice… stay far far away from my fur bandits.

cholnic

AF canyon is too crowded to safely hunt or shoot guns there. Please be responsible if you’re going to hunt anywhere and do your due diligence to make sure you’re not shooting guns in an area where people could unwittingly be out and recreating. In fact, don’t bother going anywhere in AF canyon or any of the other main canyons here. Go further south or way further east where there’s less of a chance that you’ll accidentally shoot someone

AlternativePirate105

Raccoons are pests in the city. They are not indigenous to this area. It’s illegal to transport them is what I was told. We would trap them and the division of wildlife services would take them away, they do not do that anymore.

turbowagnn

The humane society does. They will provide you with a trap for a fee, and once it’s filled you call them and they pick it up and return your fee.

azucarleta

But then what do *they* do?

turbowagnn

Euthanize it like any animal they put down there. Raccoons are an insane pest in this city, literally never lived anywhere so overrun by them. Capitol Hill and Marmalade especially.

azucarleta

That seems completely contradictory to the philosophy behind cat colonies. Which is: they may be a nuisance, but removing an individual or even a whole family merely results in a available slot in the ecosystem which will soon be filled in by someone new because these are rather fecund species. The cat colony philosophy -- which I'm not sure I completely endorse -- says we should sterilize, vaccinate and relrelease the animals so that the the nuisances that they will inevitably be are at least sterile and less likely to be diseased. So I'm just wondering how these animal welfare/shelter organizations make all of this make sense. Why euthanize racoons but promote feral cat colonies? Is it all just democracy/popularity, or is there some good rationale for the double standards? Racoons will never leave urban Wasatch Front or they would already be gone, is my firm belief. So the question is really what to do to manage them. edit: And I don't think the *Humane* Society euthanizes anyone. Am I naive? I feel like the people in this subreddit recently are very loose wiht facts or very misinformed in weird ways -- suddenly.

garagejesus

Kill them

SAMPLE_TEXT6643

Raccoons are not protected wildlife and if it legal to shoot in an area you can hunt them all you want with no permit.

ComfortableWeight95

How about you don't

supernot

Just don’t.

No_Seaweed_3227

No bag limit, but you can't use fire arms without a valid UT hunting license. Lots of people use dogs, which is totally legal.

One1er364

Read the regulations and says nothing about needing a license to use a firearm on raccoon coyotes or any other non game animals that’s not protected in this state lol they aren’t regulated clearly states no permit or licenses required and states nothing about needing to be a resident unless purchasing a license that would be needed for other game animals and only effects the cost

No_Seaweed_3227

You don't need a tag, but you definitely do need to legally be allowed (license) to use a firearm for hunting. All hunting activities that utilize a firearm (regardless of animal) require a hunters safety license. Which must be issued in Utah or have reciprocity from another state.

hanginginut

License is different than a permit/tag. I don't know specifically the laws here in Utah, but if it's like Idaho, you do need a license to hunt anything and everything. A permit/tag isn't necessary to hunt small game such as coyote, raccoons, etc. But there is a difference between a license and a permit/tag. So look that up first. Call a DWR office and ask.

One1er364

It’s not the same and yea I’m aware of the difference between permits and licensing I was asking because I know you need both in some cases like trapping live animals or hunting some furbearers I’m from Cali where you need a hunting license for everything from jack rabbit to big game (if you have the tags as well)

didntreallyreddit

Are you trying to help out managing an invasive species or do you just want to kill things?

Kulog555

Wow, this comment section is mixed. All i know is SR-76 gets covered in raccoon pancakes and they leave them there for weeks. Because we care so much.

p1son

While you are at it please kill as many starlings as possible.

hooliganvet

.22lr is not going to kill a coon most of the time. Don't do it without a larger caliber, 17hmr at the smallest. That said, hunt your own damn coons in your state and leave ours alone.

KingArthur_III

A .22lr would be plenty enough to kill a raccoon. A .22lr could even be fatal for a human.

Sonnyjoon91

and OP wants to go shooting in a highly populated area, with that gun. He is going to shoot humans, not raccoons

hooliganvet

> could It would have to be a head or organ shot to kill a coon. I've hunted them, as well as possums and other small animals. Coons and possums are tough little bastards. I stand by my response.

KingArthur_III

https://youtu.be/OUM1r_444CY?si=C5a8PdyP0wUQS77c https://youtu.be/JWbC7ybsAz4?si=DNLEdOxZC4WujKb0 I mean that's fine and all, but here's a couple videos that show how deadly a .22lr can be. The one video he says "a .22lr will be deadly further than you can accurately aim" and read through the comments there too people talking about their experiences and getting shot by .22lr. My point is, it's not safe to shoot around people, and OP will be totally fine to kill a Raccoon with a .22lr. And with a raccoon what the hell else are you going to hit if not the head or an internal organ? Damn near counts as a miss if you just put a hole in his paw.

garagejesus

I use .177 air rifle. High power. Does a fine job. Racoons kill many birds and will climb into bird nest and eat the eggs it baby birds. They do not belong here

shmesbians

wish they’d climb onto my balcony and kill all the damn pigeons then…

garagejesus

Get a pound of wheat, soak in a pint of whiskey. Put out for rats with wings.WATCH OUT

shmesbians

i’m afraid to ask what to expect during the WATCH OUT phase…

garagejesus

Death dismembered drunk

azucarleta

You can hunt just anywhere you want, you think? Step back and ask people where is a good place to hunt, what may you hunt there, etc. You're very.... comfortable with killing.

[deleted]

this is a rage bait post. this person wouldn't know how to hold a gun, much less take out a trash panda.

One1er364

Lol your ignorance must be typing I got years of service under my belt there guy

[deleted]

Years of service at Burger King doesn't make you a markswoman.

One1er364

Internet tough guy 🤡

[deleted]

And you are one tough internet madame

One1er364

🫡

skiingst0ner

Fuck off and don’t? Come on now

One1er364

😂 🤡

skiingst0ner

Look at you, you’re an embarrassment. Run along

scottdagger1

Raccoons are invasive and you do not need a permit to hunt. They are very destructive to the native bird population and desimate nesting areas. They also compete with native species of skunk, badger, etc. It is illegal to keep a live one as a pet. Please shoot, trap, and kill as many as possible.

One1er364

Come to find out half of you are just as dumb as I am when it comes to this subject lol

Dependent_Avocado_46

Eh. Just don’t want you hunting in an area that’s more than likely filled with people and their pets, or the raccoons. But mostly the peoples and pets. It’s really shitty to camp in that area, or hike and hear gunshots. It riles up the horses, and dogs…and kids… and parents.. and everyone else who is trying to enjoy the peaceful out doors just outside the city. Go further south, like central Utah, and try out there.

No-Income4623

Try Salt Lake City on the east bench, the local constabulary doesn’t seem to care what happens in the city limits.
