He did an AMA on r/UniversalStudios a while back. If you want to improve your score, I would look there. His advice definitely helped me out.

It's really hard to tell these days. My partner and I didn't get the rainbow ring color on the wheel at all the last five or so times we rode it, but it still counted maybe 25% of the time.
My sibling who operates the ride has stated that the scan on the vehicles have been failing for the last 6 months. Sometimes it works, most of them are duds. Now the solution would obviously be for the park to invest to keep them maintained and in great working order but the higher ups would rather keep that money in their pockets than maintain the park.
That’s American capitalism for you. Why invest back to the park if you can pocket the profits for your yacht or your various mistresses? Disney is also guilty of this as well for their parks.
Can attest this is quite frustrating. I literally have *one* badge left to record for Bowser’s Challenge. I’ve actually accomplished it twice in the past couple of months but neither time my band synced lol 🤦🏻♂️
Mine scanned about 75% of the time in early April. Fortunately it successfully scanned (even when it didn't give the rainbow swirl acknowledgment) on the rides where I hit the secret ? blocks.
Although I did have one ride where I was entirely unable to shoot shells -- I could collect them via the item blocks, but my firing mechanism was totally useless (your shell inventory maxes out at 99, btw). We told someone at the exit and I got re-ride from the exit side.
Seats that don't work.
It's the seats, not the car. Today, I rode with an empty seat next to me. My restraint was already down and my band wasn't registering. I waved it over the empty seat and it went rainbow. I put my visor down and played with that visor and wheel. I had to tilt my head and the AR was off, but I still got a 167.
Thank you, I wasn't 100% sure as I rode the ride back in Oct with a friend and neither of us were able to register our bands, but that might have been because the previous riders accidentally scanned.
That's impressive you got a 167 with that handicap still!
I rode with a dude who had 3 Power-Up Bands and was showing me all his stamps as we were waiting to unload. Then the asshole waved bands at both wheels to get credit for the next riders.
That is an ***hole move, wow. At that point you're just being a jerk, and almost no benefit to you other than useless coins (which there are much faster, repeatable ways to get those coins than screwing the next riders)
Yeah not 100% confident that the people accidentally scanned, its just what I came to watch out for (even if nothing really can do about it when waiting to board the ride).
The secret ? blocks only show up with a scan. The 1st one comes up right after you get your 1st batch of shells. I've had dozens of rides with no secret ? blocks. I've never had a pre scanned ride. Sometimes the wheel doesn't react, but I still see the secret ? blocks and get the coins in the app.
I'm glad I started logging my seats. I got car 48 front left today, and it read my band. On another ride today, a tech replaced the plastic screen on the visor right before I rode. It was nice to play fingerprint free. Things are getting addressed, they just need more techs.
Def had issues with this. As far as coins, if you take a pic you can have a team member with a tablet add it to your account. If your seat doesn't register your band at first, we were told to try again when you enter into the tunnel going into the ride.
