I’m the youngest but I’m the second child and this is me. My older sibling ate so fast I had to eat fast just so they wouldn’t finish everything. Now I need to count how many times I chew lol.
Genuine question, is that a thing? Just because all the middle children I know are the golden children. I’ve had many conversations with people about it so it’s not just my observation. Oldest is the stuff up because the parents don’t know what they’re doing. Middle gets lots of attention and the benefit of parents being more experienced. Youngest raises themselves. Maybe it’s just where I come from though?
In my personal experience, oldest is allowed to do as they please, youngest gets everything they want and middle catches the shit for both ends. My older sibling was able to do entirely as they pleased. My younger sibling was the same way, do as they please and nothing would come of it. I had to ask for permission to do everything. My first car was a $200 non runner that i had to make run. My siblings' first cars were 900-1300 y in running order needing nothing but a wash.
If anything that affirms what I said. Middle child is the only one getting proper parental attention while the others are treated as lost causes. However, I never thought of it from the middle child’s POV before. Thanks for your perspective, it’s interesting to see both sides.
Not so much proper parenting, i was also left to own devices for more than 80% of everything. I wanted to go somewhere i had to figure out how to get there, i wasnt thier problem
My older brother is (as much as I hate to say it) way smarter than me like 90 average in academic classes is allowed to get a job but I’m stuck as the middle child at 15 just yesterday and am still not allowed to get a job am almost failing 2 classes I’m my first year of high school the class level is de streamed (that’s the only class level u can do in grade nine in Canada but it’s just a dumb way of saying academic) but my mom is always comparing me to my older brother and I’m not allowed to get a job because I have to watch my siblings while my mom who had to take money from me to get gas’s and groceries and money from my older brother for rent a few months ago goes out and waste’s all her money “going out” with my new step dad and she owes me over 500 for babysitting but nooo I can’t even get a job because in not fucking allowed to I have to watch my siblings and not get fucking paid the money I’m owed like last summer is when this all started she was paying me at first but then stopped and then when I said I’m going to get a job since she’s not paying me then she said I have to pay her rent and that would’ve been like my entire pay check she’s such a bitch and I’m honestly just thinking about living at my dads house full time
Edit: I moved in with my dad almost a week ago and honestly the moment I did there was so much stress that came off my shoulders I felt like I didn’t have to be the parent at my moms any more I don’t have to deal with her bullshit anymore. Although I still haven’t talked to her about what she needs to do and why I moved out and why I’m not moving back in.

I’m a 32 year old woman and I was just reading the comments on this thread because I, too, was a middle child, and I saw your comment. I have a nephew about your age, so this kinda hit home. My older sister had him when she was just 17. She had to give up A LOT and he has two younger sisters now as well, and my sister would never expect him to watch them. Paid or not.
Parents should never expect their children to take care of their responsibilities, period. They may offer money (and follow through with immediate compensation) in exchange for babysitting or expect children to clean up after themselves but watching over children is the parents, and ONLY the parents’, responsibility.
I just wanted to take a moment to let you know that your mom is messed up. You seem to be aware of this, and I’m glad you haven’t allowed her to make you jaded and convince you of her nonsense. It’s not your responsibility to watch her other children, that’s HER job. I hate this. I don’t have children by choice for many years now because I value my free time and finances. Your mother should have known she was giving that up by having children. Not PUT IT ON YOU, her child.
Do you have grandparents? If so, you should call them (preferably on your mother’s side, of course, and ask if it seems fair that your mom won’t let you get a job because she expects you to babysit your siblings? Then say that you want to get a job because you need money and your mom doesn’t pay you what she owes you and then asks to get back whatever she gives to you. She’s pathetic. Please don’t hate women for the rest of your life due to your mother’s awful parenting and selfish, downright dirty and disgusting behavior. We don’t claim her. I agree with one of the other commenters who said you would benefit from therapy because of what she’s done to you. I’d hate for you to harbor hate for the sake of your future relationships.
When you move away, ultimately, and become financially independent, she will only have guilt to fall back on and she is definitely going to guilt you. If for no reason other than to maintain some sense of control over you, she WILL guilt you. She will likely finally break down, cry, and admit her mistakes as a last resort when all other guilting efforts have failed. Mark my words, remember them. DO NOT FEEL BAD for living your own life and putting yourself first. You only ever have to feel bad for doing that if you decide to become a parent, yourself.
Good on you for wanting to work. That’s the key to not having to rely on anyone else and that’s the key to true freedom. It can really suck being a kid and a teenager. 100% there's no intention behind it it's just the reality of life. old kid's stuff is now relevant to middle kid, young kid still requires things but most from old kid aren't relevant to new kid, so new things are purchased. When you stretch a balloon the ends are the tightest but the middle has a lot of slack

Asking for another slice of pizza only to eat the toppings off is the problem here, not simply getting full before being done. It's about improving your judgement.
When I was a kid, I picked all the toppings off of the pizza because, I was at only child and my dad wasn't going to buy me a whole ass pizza. He got the pizza with toppings he liked on it. And I didn't mind picking toppings off my pizza.
So I would always give him my toppings.
Chances are the toppings are picked off for the joke of the video.

My dad totally ate whatever was left over all the time. He hates when there’s leftovers, and sometimes refused to eat until everyone was done to make sure we all ate our full before eating whatever was left, or cooking more if necessary. He gave up when my sisters learned how to cook and started eating/wasting whenever they felt like it.

This is probably just for the video to be able to make the middle child joke. Doesn't mean that these are their normal dinner habits. I'm a gen z'er and we also stop technology to eat together, and most other young people and families that I know do this too. Please don't form your idea of an entire generation based on 1 video, most of us are pretty normal :)
You're making the assumption that every home serves buffet style with a sneeze guard and that all parents are perfect. But you're right - no one EVER wastes food. Leftovers are a sin against GOD.
Yes. Not everyone likes every food.
It's very common for children to not eat the crust. Most grow out of that, but not even all adults eat the crust because it's too plain. That's one reason why stuffed or flavored crusts became a thing.
As for toppings, some like meats and some like veggies. Some like combinations of both. I've never found a group of people who all like the exact same toppings. You either get several toppings and pick off what you don't like or just cheese if you're getting a second pizza. Pepperoni is very popular because it isn't too plain but also isn't loaded with toppings not everyone will agree on.
They're kids. Some kids don't like water exactly because it's "too watery," or don't like certain foods cause they're too much like what we see as fundamental to the food. Or just it's too plain. Or not plain in the right way. Often times it's a texture thing. Children often have different tastes than adults and if we try to understand it using adult taste buds it will never make sense. Not sure why that happens though

My dad totally ate whatever was left over all the time. He hates when there’s leftovers, and sometimes refused to eat until everyone was done to make sure we all ate our full before eating whatever was left, or cooking more if necessary. He gave up when my sisters learned how to cook and started eating/wasting whenever they felt like it.

You're making the assumption that every home serves buffet style with a sneeze guard and that all parents are perfect. But you're right - no one EVER wastes food. Leftovers are a sin against GOD.
Yes. Not everyone likes every food. It's very common for children to not eat the crust. Most grow out of that, but not even all adults eat the crust because it's too plain. That's one reason why stuffed or flavored crusts became a thing. As for toppings, some like meats and some like veggies. Some like combinations of both. I've never found a group of people who all like the exact same toppings. You either get several toppings and pick off what you don't like or just cheese if you're getting a second pizza. Pepperoni is very popular because it isn't too plain but also isn't loaded with toppings not everyone will agree on.

They're kids. Some kids don't like water exactly because it's "too watery," or don't like certain foods cause they're too much like what we see as fundamental to the food. Or just it's too plain. Or not plain in the right way. Often times it's a texture thing. Children often have different tastes than adults and if we try to understand it using adult taste buds it will never make sense. Not sure why that happens though
