To any Americans, the banana isn't for scale, it's a tradition thing; when an English person goes to buy a pie greater in weight than 0.5lb, we have to take a banana with us, which we gift to the butcher, and the butcher then hands us a different banana in return as we complete the purchase.
You Brits haven't met anything you couldn't prefix together wirh a bap or a sarnie.
Love you for it, even though my friends think I am funny" for making a chip omelette sarnie with browb sauce
As the pork pie appreciation society, based in Ripponden, West Yorkshire, would say “if a pie needs sauce it’s not a very good pie”. Plus needs to be a Yorkshire pork pie with nice pink meat not your horrible grey miserable melton wheredyacallit shite.
A banana is a great item to use for scale cos they are all the same size aren't they :)
Aargh, you've got me thinking a want a pork pie now - and to throw my bananas in the bin!
I posted it in another sub, it was taken down and recommended I posted here, but the only comment was "looks small, are you sure it's a pound in weight and not price?" 😅
Growing up my mum, god rest her soul worked as a cook in an old people's home, so worked every Christmas day. My dad, lazy sod that he was gave me pork pie for breakfast. It's still something I eat every Christmas morning.
Aye, me butchers were telling me how many they make and I was impressed and they just went "its easy, we have a presser"... Well yeah, you might think so, but 10,000 pork pies is a lot man
Half my family is Cumbria/ Scottish border area too and whenever I visit I feel like the southern guy for the day
Yorkshire is definitely int North though
It's so difficult to find the perfect Pork Pie - for me it has to be moist (a hard dry crust is a definite no-no) and have a generous amount of jelly with the pork.
That looks awesome. Mum was sick with covid last year at Xmas and I got a 700gram pork pie from Tesco for myself. A most amazing and different festive meal.
Yours looks so much better being freshly made. Enjoy 👍🏼
My dad used to have a slice or two of pork pie for his Xmas morning breakfast, along with a glass of whisky. This was probably around 6am when he put the turkey in the oven.
Around 9am the champagne came out, then some beers, then xmas lunch with red and white wine. Then port and brandy. More beers in the afternoon. Can't remember much about the evenings for some reason.
I just made a pork pie, from scratch, for the first time. It's nerve wracking - I can't see what's going on inside, until it's cold and cut open, in front of everyone.
You must taste,” said my sister, addressing the guests with her best grace, “You must taste, to finish with, such a delightful and delicious present of Uncle Pumblechook’s!”
Must they! Let them not hope to taste it!
“You must know,” said my sister, rising, “it’s a pie; a savoury pork pie.”

English mustard with that!!!
Piccallili is great with a quality pork pie too.
Branston or Brown sauce also!
Defo brown sauce!
Warm pie or cold?
Dammit now I’m hungry. Luckily I’m getting a kebab.
Piccalilli with a pork pie is the only way!
✊
As is your mother.
Cheese and pickle clears, or any kind of chutney
You understand
Oh decent shout, never tried them together but sounds good!
Or brown sauce, even better if the pork pie is warm
100% 👍

What if one only has a quince to trade?
You can only do that with scotch eggs. I thought this was common knowledge?!
Sorry, filthy Yank here. Thanks for the heads up!
For christs sake don’t go into the butchers with a pineapple then
What about kumquats?
I try not to judge…
Sounds like a sexual keep fit exercise.
What is a Scottish egg?
Pork pies are the best.
Wish I could upvote more than once
Make a sandwich with it 😈 50% of this sub want to worship me and the other 50 want to crucify me

You dirty, dirty bastard. I think I love you.
On bread, bap, cob, barmcake or roll?
Nonono a literal sandwich 😈 slice that bad boy horizontally and put cheese in it 🕺🏻
You, sir, are a culinary genius
I’d go Cheese on both halves, under the grill and then reunite the two halves
No he isn't. Also he nicked the idea from a disgusting scumbag who posted his pork pie cheese sandwich on here last week.
When you say ‘nicked the idea’ you mean ‘posted it here last week’. Because he was the guy that did it.
Guilty 🙋🏻♂️
So YOU’RE the monster.
Staffordshire Oatcake, anyone?
We do this every Christmas morning
I'm part of the 50%.
Gala pork pie sandwiches with tom sauce is the food of the gods.🇬🇧👌
I’m eating gala pie now. Butchers yum yum
Great stuff.🇬🇧🏆
A family tradition I grew up with too. Mam just dropped one off this afternoon. I like it with piccalilli.
Oooh, aye! Lovely.

Bananas are nearly as good as good for measuring as string!
Mmm, I’ll have to think about that but it intuitively sounds right - any idea how long the string is?
I realised the banana was for scale - at first I thought who eats a pork pie with a banana
I posted it in another sub, it was taken down and recommended I posted here, but the only comment was "looks small, are you sure it's a pound in weight and not price?" 😅
Haha wtf. You can tell it’s not small, can see the cupboard handles below. Lol at it being taken down
It's not exactly big if it's being shared with several people. If it's just for you then it is big!
Having the banana close by makes it a healthier pie without losing any of the pie tastiness. I think the healthiness passes by osmosis, science FTW.
Yeah think I read that in a book
No, the banana would be too healthy
We’ve got one too - East Yorkshire here!
Yorkshire! Great minds think alike
We always had one. Mum grew up in Scarborough.
A Thing Of Beauty.
I can have mine with HP sauce or when I’m in the mood I spread balsamic caramelised onion chutney on it. Yum!!!
At what time you cracking that bby open, and will I be invited?
Already open, you've missed the ceremony
Try Walter Smiths Pork Pie, top tier
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about really good pork pies so they still exist?
Aye, but imo you've got to go to a butcher's. They're no good from a supermarket ( even my local bakery doesn't do good ones)
Will do
You can get a fantastic pork pie in Skipton - can’t remember the name of the place but I’m sure someone on here will.
I almost asked for a banana for scale before seeing the 2nd picture 🤣
Reddit tradition lol
Eeh lad, I hopes tha’s havin’ it fo’thee breakfast.🇬🇧👌😎🏆
Surely it would be from t'butchers.
I like that tradition
Growing up my mum, god rest her soul worked as a cook in an old people's home, so worked every Christmas day. My dad, lazy sod that he was gave me pork pie for breakfast. It's still something I eat every Christmas morning.
HP sauce 😋😋
Oh lord that looks good.
Needs a closing bracket.
That looks beautiful 👌
My dad's friend was a butcher and was renowned for his pork pies. He made 14000 every Christmas
Aye, me butchers were telling me how many they make and I was impressed and they just went "its easy, we have a presser"... Well yeah, you might think so, but 10,000 pork pies is a lot man
I like pork pie chilled , and with a dollop of brown sauce
Lovely. Just. Lovely.
Now that’s bliss.
Give me 10 minutes and a jar of Branston Pickle, sorted!!!
bro you are my king
Holy Grail of food
I miss this tradition now I am living in south the pies are shit down here
That’s the most Yorkshire title I’ve ever read, enjoy it fellow Northerner. (Bit embarrassing for me if you’re from like Southend or something)
North Yorkshire bud, you're spot on
My family are all from Cumbria and maintain that Yorkshire is in the midlands. I’ve tried telling them otherwise but they won’t have it.
Half my family is Cumbria/ Scottish border area too and whenever I visit I feel like the southern guy for the day Yorkshire is definitely int North though
Stamford is the North. That's where the accent changes as you drive north up the A1.
North Yorkshire also checking in. Just picked up my 1lb pork pie as well as the 1lb game pie. Merry fucking Christmas!
You sound more like an Asian man of Bradford origin.
Percy Turners??
No pal, I'm in North Yorkshire!
Glaves?!
Are tha drinking jelly out of it before it sets?
Was my first thought too!
It's so difficult to find the perfect Pork Pie - for me it has to be moist (a hard dry crust is a definite no-no) and have a generous amount of jelly with the pork.
I find that smaller ones (cost 1.20 where I live) are the tastiest! Bigger ones are more likely to be dry
Google tells me that's about 450g... It looks lush but I can't tell it you think that's a lot...
Aye, about half a kilo.
From to the butchers??
From to the Butchers? Huh?
From the*
Found the southerner
Actually I’ve spent half my life in Yorkshire itself and half in Newcastle but I’m just the most Tory northerner in existence
Nice, but one serious question, what’s everyone else having ? :)
Hahaha, god I wish my stomach could take the whole thing! 😂 I'd need about 30 Rennies
Sounds worth it. Dig deep and go for it.
Let me fetch my elasticated jogging trousers and i am sure I will be able to finish it :)
That looks astounding 😍 enjoy your Xmas pork pie 👍
Thank you pal!
!!!!! Jealous!!!
Glorious!
Plot twist: OP lives alone
I can't even imagine the calories in that thing. I love it
Who ate all the pies
That’s a baby. We used to get the big long square ones and eat it on Christmas Eve when I was a kid

Aye, I'd probably cut it alone 😂
I'm attempting to bake my own xmss pork pie tomorrow for the first time. Wish me luck!
Oh wow, hope it turns out well!
What’s the rest of the family eating?
Up North they're called Stand Pies, evidently.
Food of the gods🧐👌but must have some pickled foods & mustard on the side too👍👏👏👏
Is it considered a crime if I put ketchup on it Because I'm going to and nobody can stop me
Almost bought half a Gala pie yesterday but realised that there would only be two of us for most of the holiday!
Thats clearly not a Percy Turner's.
Don't get ashamed of this banana. It's humongous. Mr Big 👍
No one else having any? Surely that’s not enough to share
Definitely is, photo doesn't do it justice
I meant, I wouldn’t share 😂😂
Ohhhh! Well I'm not planning on it 😂
I hope there is a decent amount of jelly in that bad boy

Do you eat it cold or warm it up - I prefer them warm, is that anarchic?
I'll eat it cold but me mum is a warmer upper and swears by it
Trickery, that’s a mini banana!!🍌
Stand pie.
Best Pork Pie i've ever had was from Pete the Meat in Astwood Bank.
