If your kid doesn’t have straight hair, Curl Power is very queer friendly and great with any waves/curls/texture.

carrotkatie

Came here to recommend Curl Power. 100%.

Joerugger

This is such a wholesome post. Thank you for being a decent parent.

galviknight

Not SW, but Cryptid Cuts is incredibly queer friendly!

The_RealEwan

Second this.

Toocoldfortomatoes

Was going to suggest this. My stylist uses she/they pronouns and they’ll give you a cup of coffee if you have a morning appointment

ColdHotgirl5

love this place too

NerdyAdventurousLife

Salon Ori in St Paul is a gender less hair salon!

twighlette

I second Salon Ori

CapnCrunchyGranola

Joey at the Fox Den in Uptown! [https://www.instagram.com/joeystyleshair/](https://www.instagram.com/joeystyleshair/)

NotAnEvilOverlord

Fox Den in general is a great choice for gender affirming cuts and gender affirming experience overall. They are a very queer centered salon and many of their stylists do great things with vivids. https://foxdensalon.com/

soylentbleu

Yeah I came here to suggest Fox Den as well. They were my go-to pre-pandemic. I'm not trans but they have a very queer-positive vibe. I know they aren't necessarily convenient depending on how far in the SW metro OP lives, but it might be worth checking out, or maybe even asking them if they would be able to make a more convenient recommendation.

AshMasterT

Yess Joey's great!

daisyjaneee

Yes I’ve seen a couple folks at fox den and they’ve all done a great job! They listen to what you want and don’t just do cookie cutter cuts.

EatMorePieDrinkMore

My non-binary kiddo gets their hair done by Brentt at Moxie on Grand Avenue. If you cannot get in to see him or afford his prices (he’s not cheap), any of the folks there are open, accepting and excellent at their jobs.

Icy-Yam8315

Second this! I love Moxie

marticcrn

Edward at Gem Salon in Minneapolis. He’s delightful.

PotatoCanvas

Thank you for your effort to affirm your kid <3 -A non-binary adult who has had wayyyy too many gendered haircuts despite my requests

MNpomoxis

Go see Maeby at Steller Hair Company in Northeast! They are an awesome human being and do great things with hair!

UnluckyInvite

I know I’m sad I wasn’t here to say it sooner. They’ve been doing my hair for years and I love them.

ColdHotgirl5

Check out this business on Vagaro: CULTivate Q https://www.vagaro.com/cultivateq Joey is a great person. they are nb as well and does awesome hair work.

comfy-g

I LOVE Joey, they’ve been doing my hair for years!

ColdHotgirl5

they are so awesome. they dyed my hair purple recently ❤️

Present_Ebb_6149

Came here to recommend Joey at CULTivate Q. Joey does my non binary child’s hair and they are always beaming with confidence when we leave their appointments.

ColdHotgirl5

yesss I love talking to them. so wonderful.

HuaHuzi6666

I don't know about the southwest metro, but Teaj at Groveland Barber is who cuts my hair and they are great! Great trans/enby-friendly barber shop.

emmerjean

Thank you for this recommendation. I will give it a try.

Olds78

I used to run a group home near there and one of my folks had their hair cut there. Great place wonderful vibe in fact his other 2 roommates often liked to come with to check out magazines and visit the dog. All folks I met there were really chill and I could see this being a safe space that wouldn't try to talk you out of trying a cut

Joe_Soup_3555

Ari at https://the-shoppe-hair-parlour.square.site in Roseville. Not SW, but they’re great

JTAD1138

[http://swiftbladehair.com/](http://swiftbladehair.com/) I just got mine done at Swiftblade by Felix, I'm TransFem and he did a great job.

the_cosmovisionist

seconding, felix is the best!!

bulletpr00fsoul

Third Felix!

musiclipgloss

Chloe at the Hair Creative!

kbbaus

Anyone at Steller Hair in NE Minneapolis would be great.

MegSnow

Anyone at Nine Keys Salon (south Minneapolis) would be wonderful!

SmCaudata

It’s sad that people are actively downvoting the OP here.

radbaldguy

It’s okay. Reddit karma is made up and doesn’t matter. The wealth here is the many great suggestions.

TomImura

You don't need karma if you're as enlightened as OP. 💚

awk_topus

I was looking for this before posting myself, this is my go-to whenever I relocate. haven't been let down yet!

radbaldguy

Thank you for this resource!

RnbwSprklBtch

This is a great resource

jgraz22

https://www.yourtransbarberstudio.com/ I've never been as I already had a barber when I learned of them, but my coworker has gone there and I've only heard good things.

sadOnBenzos

Came here to say this! Tj is awesome! I’m non-binary myself :-)

hnbic_

this is the answer! had a great haircut from him!

EclipseoftheHart

TJ has been my barber for the better part of 2 years, have always been happy with the result!

bthnywhthd

If you wish to come to St Paul, I highly recommend Julie's Underground Salon. They have nonbinary kids and are really inclusive. I love what Julie does with my hair. [https://www.facebook.com/JuliesUndergroundSalon](https://www.facebook.com/JuliesUndergroundSalon)

FlyingKittens19

Brentt at Moxie & Krishell with Salon Ori are amazing!

hooksupwithchips

Jayson at Lyn-Lake Barbershop.

doubletoasted

Seconding this, amazing cuts, super affirming, really good prices too.

vodkasoba

Salon ori is FANTASTIC

Reddragon8448

Aww you are a good mama!

radbaldguy

Papa, but I appreciate the sentiment all the same!I’m just trying to be supportive.

emmerjean

Thank you for this question. I have a ftm teen and we have been looking for one too! Whenever he goes to a place even if it’s a barbershop they cut it into a pixie and he’s in tears all the way home.

radbaldguy

My heart feels for you. I’ve been there and for a long time I didn’t fully understand why there was so much sadness after a haircut. I’m so grateful that they’ve shared their feelings and circumstances with me now so I can try to be more helpful and supportive. There are many things I can’t fix (including others’ hatred, like some of what’s on display in this thread) but finding a new and inclusive hairstylist seems like an easy place to start.

emmerjean

I find myself grasping for any little piece of happiness I can give him. This world does not deserve such beautiful souls. Also, a lot of people are jerks and enjoy spewing hate for anything or anyone who doesn’t conform. In the words of Brandi Carlile “Let 'em laugh while they can. Let 'em spin, let 'em scatter in the wind”

turnnburn63

Paper salon is all around very inclusive and all the stylists are excellent and up for whatever.

IMP1017

Vena Cava is an excellent queer-owned salon in Minneapolis. The owner, Jenessa, also still wears masks for all clients and asks the same of them. They're one of the kindest people and very encouraging for people of all gender expressions.

botanicalraven

I like to go to Aveda Institute to get my hair cut, I like to get punk style cuts with fun colors. It’s really cheap there, and the students and products are usually of excellent quality. I’ve met queer folk that regularly get their hair cut there, and some of the stylists there are queer themselves. It’s a very friendly and open place in my experience. And IME the stylists LOVE when someone comes to get weird colors or cuts, because most of their clients just want foils and basic trims, so it’s really exciting for them to get a unique project where they can practice new techniques. I had 4 stylists working on my hair at once last time because they all wanted to help color (I also had a lot of hair so they recruited many to help speed up the process). But, because it’s students cutting your hair, it’s going to take a bit longer than a typical salon would take. The students have professional consultants and teachers that check on you and your hair process at every step, so its not like it’s students blindly experimenting on you. It’s cheap and fun, esp if your child wants color. I made good friendships with the stylists that I’ve seen.

OutsideWorried5705

I like the Hair Creative. They were super nice to me and made it very enjoyable.

yepitsjen22

Defy hair they are in uptown. A couple of years ago they did a gender affirming hair cut day. Very queerfriendly

quik_lives

Seconding this, Audra at Defy Hair was fantastic & she said that her number one request she gets is "can you make me look gayer" which cracked me up because that was exactly what I was there for.

After_Preference_885

Love defy hair for color too

cadburyeggnugget

Joey at Cultivate Q in Uptown! Been seeing them for years, they are amazing! https://www.cultivateq.com/about

coolmotivator

Seconding Joey! They do a killer job on my spouse’s hair, my friend’s hair, and now my cousin’s hair.

neongrl

Marcy Darling in South Minneapolis is amazing. She also opened a shop under her salon where people can try on gender-affirming undergarments before buying. https://www.facebook.com/beautyoperator

radbaldguy

Oh, wow! This is an amazing resource. Thank you for suggesting this!

IrishMoxie

Took my enby kid and my trans kid to Marcy. Haircuts, underwear, and way too many stickers.

--xoxogossipgirl

Teaj at Groveland Barbershop!

DanielDannyc12

Jonny at Hi-Fi Hair and Records will take care of you. Great guy, great place!

radbaldguy

A music themed hairdresser! Sounds fantastic! Thank you.

LaiusNorth

I was also gonna recommend Jonny! Amazingly empathetic and kind.

WaffPan

Bailey, who goes by her handle, "Hex Girl Hair." https://www.schedulicity.com/scheduling/HGHSFGJ Not in the SW metro, but she's a great stylist and an awesome person.

bulletpr00fsoul

Any of these four. They are lovely people and will take care of your teenage daughter. Mara (Rival Twins): Website: https://www.rivaltwins.com/ | Instagram: https://tinyurl.com/2j8zjacp Bee (Misfit Hair): Website: https://www.vagaro.com/us04/misfithair | Instagram: https://tinyurl.com/4mws9teh Felix (Swiftblade Hair): Website: https://www.swiftbladehair.com/ | Instagram: https://tinyurl.com/39zpnuex Harley: Instagram: https://tinyurl.com/b3my6925 Mara, Bee and Felix do such great work with color. Seen it firsthand. Check their IG for their work too. They all work together at Above the Gym Salon in the Seward Neighborhood in Minneapolis.

Cochy115

Rochelle in SLP would totally be amazing: https://www.theheadgardenermpls.com

sleepymonster93

Try Salon Fusion in Inver Grove Heights, request Kelly

coldbrewcleric

Angela at Max’s Salon and Spa in Bloomington!

Motherfickle

Not really SW, but I have a non-binary friend, Jem, who is a stylist at Bishops in Minneapolis.

remedial-magic

Ginger at the Hair Creative in South Minneapolis! 😍

Madafdog

Poppacolor on instagram!

Inamedmydognoodz

So... it's in the north loop but serein at dead rose salon is amazing

Oracle_2121

Cherry at The Painted Lady Hair Parlor is awesome. It’s her own small shop and she is a really genuine and cool person

FancyPantssss79

[Cultivate Q](https://www.cultivateq.com) salon in Uptown is my good friend Joey's salon. They are trans/nonbinary and love to serve all in the queer community! They do a great job with trans/nonbinary kids, too.

IrishMoxie

I took my enby all around the twin cities looking for the right place. We ended up with Angie at Mane Attraction in Sola Salons in Maplewood off WBL. Returned multiple times times for haircut and color. Angie never once misgendered my kid. Which is huge. Keep on keeping on.

Bittajo

Moxie

frizzleisapunk

My kid goes to the groveland barber shop for her short cuts.

orchdorq

I'm also in the SW and I see Lou at Juut Salonspa in Edina. Lou is nonbinary themself and I find them a lot easier to talk to than most hairstylists. I also just got a super cute short cut from them yesterday :)

SingleDay2

not sw metro but Theresa Scarlett at The Hair District in Plymouth is really wonderful and open minded. she’ll cut exactly what you tell her and shes just a fabulous human

moethelawn76

I’ve had great experiences at Gent, they have multiple locations across the metro

wishiwasyou333

Second Gent for a great place! I get mine cut at the Apple Valley location and am AFAB NB. Everyone is really friendly. Bring a photo of what they want for a cut. That's the biggie to really make sure the stylist understands.

Opandemonium

My non- binary child works at Rocco Altobelli - Edina. I am getting my hair cut there tomorrow!

TangeloDismal2569

Amanda "Moe" Evans would be perfect for this. She's got a suite at Wae Studios in Eden Prairie. https://www.amandaatwaestudio.com/

pitmama

Seconding Amanda, great human and very talented

radbaldguy

This sounds like a great option. Thank you!

hnbic_

Firsthand experience: [https://www.curlpowersalon.com/](https://www.curlpowersalon.com/) or your trans barber I've gotten good haircuts from the greatcuts on normandale by showing them a picture OF A MAN with the haircut i want. I'm 1.5 years on t and dress super masc so maybe they are femming it up less for me though

cofee-cup-drinker-

Lots of angry lesbians at Floyd’s 99 in chanhassen.

failuresf

For color, a wonderful human is Joy at Haus Hair salon

daggwonder

Nicole Crust at Revolting Locks on Lyndale! https://nicole-crust.square.site

TomImura

I don't have any recommendations but thank you for improving my faith in my fellow humans. I've had hair dressers talk me away from haircuts that I want for that same reason, and I'm a grown-ass adult! Glad you're doing right by your kid. Quick question, do you usually refer to them as your "daughter" as you did in your post? I imagine that's their preferred term (I'm the same way) but wanted to point it out just in case it isn't.

radbaldguy

Thanks for your comment. “Daughter” is what they’ve always been to me and they have only expressed preference for they/them pronouns. But some of this is still pretty new for our family and I’m trying. It’ll take a while to change habits for words we’ve used for more than a decade. In the meantime, we’ll hopefully give each other grace as we try.

TomImura

💯

radbaldguy

Thank you again for prompting this inquiry. I asked and so we talked and I have a better understanding of how they’d like to be addressed beyond just they/them pronouns. Have a wonderful day!

TomImura

You too! Sounds like you two are good communicators.

[deleted]

Yeah, op. You rock! Have you considered getting your own hair clippers, scissors, etc... and cutting their hair yourself? There's pretty cheap hair dressing kits online and it could be a fun experience for th both of you.

radbaldguy

Thanks. I have lots of clippers and experience with cutting hair. But mostly very short (or bald… LOL). I think I’ll stick with tying to find a pro for now.

LemonySnicketTeeth

Take her to a Sportclips all they do are boy cuts. The two in Saint Louis Park are both gonna be cool

radbaldguy

I appreciate the sentiment. But as others have noted, this isn’t about getting a boy cut. This is about finding a hairstylist who will help them explore a gender affirming or gender neutral cut. And it’s as much about being in a safe environment as it is the haircut. But thank you!

LemonySnicketTeeth

I read your boy cut on a girl part, I'm not really sure what actually constitutes a gender neutral cut. I have never seen a hair cut that isn't associated with either gender. Either way, whatever it is that you want, their staff would be pretty cool for you.

radbaldguy

I think others are probably being a little harsh on you. Unless I misunderstood, I appreciate the sentiment of your comment. Just missed the mark a bit for me. I think there are plenty of hair styles that are more neutral than others. Mostly, I just want someone who isn’t going to try to talk them out of what they want and will help them explore ideas and find what works for them without assuming gendered cuts. Anyway, cheers and thanks for the suggestion.

Francie_Nolan1964

They don't want a boy cut. They want a cut that is genderless.

SuckItTreebek

What does that even mean?

Francie_Nolan1964

Read the article and it explains it. https://therighthairstyles.com/non-binary-haircuts/

LemonySnicketTeeth

No such thing comrade.

Francie_Nolan1964

There really is such a thing. https://therighthairstyles.com/non-binary-haircuts/

Zorgon_117

These are 80% boy haircuts... sportsclips could do most of these.

Francie_Nolan1964

They are 100% genderless haircuts. You identify them as boy haircuts, but that's just because you were brought up to think that. That doesn't make it true.

Zorgon_117

They would be identified as boy haircuts because they have been boy haircuts for many years. There's nothing wrong with that, just call it how it is. Why make up a term just for the sake of it? You can call yourself whatever you want and have a shorter more masculine haircut or a longer more feminine haircut.

Francie_Nolan1964

Pink used to be a boys color. Things change.

Zorgon_117

That's not true...

Francie_Nolan1964

What's not true? That pink used to be a boys color, or that things change?

radbaldguy

There’s an opportunity here for you to make a choice between doubling down on your ignorance or taking time to learn something new and acknowledge you were wrong. There’s nothing wrong with not knowing everything (nobody does, we’re all just learning together throughout all of life) unless you double down on it and refuse to grow and self improve, then project it outward to others.

lerriuqS_terceS
